Neil Peart, drummer and lyricist for Canadian rock band Rush, has died from brain cancer aged 67.

The musician, considered one of rock's greatest ever drummers, died on Tuesday in Santa Monica, California.

Rush, the band he played with for 45 years, confirmed his death in a statement posted to Twitter.

The statement said Peart, their "soul brother", had been suffering from glioblastoma - a type of brain cancer - for three-and-a-half years.

"It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and band mate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer," the statement says.

Placed at number four in Rolling Stone's list of all-time greatest drummers, Peart was well-known for his technical proficiency and animated live performances.

He joined Rush in 1974, drawing influences from hard rock, jazz and heavy metal in a career that spanned four decades.

Peart retired from Rush in 2015 after the band's final tour, saying the time had come to take himself "out of the game".

The group, which also featured singer-bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson, recorded hits including The Spirit Of Radio and Tom Sawyer. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

He was said to be a 'Drumming metronome' he was so talented.

The inevitable which will comes to pass for us all.

I too thought his drumming was amazing, and will always listen to the early Rush with fond memories until my own last days.

My favorite band of all time. I grew up with them and went to the concerts.

Their 30th "birthday" concert in the UK is one of the reasons I suffer from tinnitus!

(The main reason being taught to fire 303's using blanks but without ear defenders).

I saw Rush more than any other band.

Always liked this album.

A sad day indeed.

The best I have seen live and by far,

The professor on the drumkit...

You will be missed Mr. Peart.

Yes same here.
Had all their later music which all became a bit too technical, lost it's sole a bit maybe.
I actually stopped listening to Rush because it all seemed a bit to mind controlling. I started thinking to myself that they where using 'Power Words' (magic if you like) in the songs.
But still a great band for sure.

I really admire the power trio -- guitar, bass, drum -- bands. Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Who, Police, etc. Rush's musicianship was amazing, even if their songwriting was a bit left brain and mechanical. Although my favourite drummer has always been Ginger Baker. I enjoyed Neil's book, Ghost Rider.

Neil's fascistic lyrics (New World Man, et al) might be forgiven as misplaced youthful idealism inspired by Sting's occult lyrics. However, Solaris Blueraven on Revolution Radio attributes her contact with Peart as being responsible for her becoming a targeted individual and mind control victim. I will be interested to hear her show tonight.

After the application process with me welcomed to Avalon, like all of us we had to say something. I said something to the effect that I speak in music. I clearly remember the song my posted.

When the ebbing tide retreats
Along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
In a short-lived galaxy
Each microcosmic planet
A complete society
A simple kind mirror
To reflect upon our own
All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools
They soon forget about the sea
Wheels within wheels in a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time we lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see their effects
A quantum leap forward
In time and in space
The universe learned to expand
The mess and the magic
Triumphant and tragic
A mechanized world out of hand
Computerized clinic
For superior cynics
Who dance to a synthetic band
In their own image
Their world is fashioned
No wonder they don't understand
Wheels within wheels in a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time we lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see their effects
Science, like nature, must also be tamed
With a view towards its preservation
Given the same state of integrity
It will surely serve us well
Art as expression, not as market campaigns
Will still capture our imaginations
Given the same state of integrity
It will surely help us along
The most endangered species: the honest man
Will still survive annihilation
Forming a world, state of integrity
Sensitive, open and strong
Wave after wave will flow with the tide
And bury the world as it does
Tide after tide will flow and recede
Leaving life to go on as it was

Huge fan of Rush having grown up in Toronto I’ve seen them more times than I can count. Spoke to Geddy Lee once on the phone about his music and my husband won all their albums in a contest to design their Christmas card in the late 70s.
Anyway I heard this very disturbing interview about Neil and the band back in 2016 from cosmic switchboard.

I understand wanting to stick up for a hero, but I listen to her weekly radio show regularly and your characterization of her is completely off. She's not a guru wannabe. She's very lucid. Seems it would be hard to get a 2nd degree black belt with any significant amount of mental illness. I don't know if she once blamed Peart directly, but more lately she has said he was probably just a deep state pawn. I can see that happening, with how aggressively the deep state goes after entertainers.

Um, she has a YouTube channel, she has a radio show, she has a Twitter account, she gives lectures, she has written books, she has a Patreon page, and she's using the name Solaris Blueraven. How much more evidence do you need?

Not really. I've known genuine sociopaths with black belts. And the history books are full of mentally deranged individuals who made it to heads of state, even.

I don't remember her exact words, but that's what it boiled down to. She described him as a CIA operative, in no uncertain terms. It's in the first of the two videos I've posted.

OMG.

To bring this up on the memorial of a great musician.

Reminds me of the fickle #metoo movement where one negative unsubstantiated voice can ruin a person's reputation and career.

And to sully a person after they are dead, not cool. And on their memorial, reprehensible. I'm sure his family is relieved to finally know the truth about their loved one. So in their name I thank you...

Weird how she repeated the phrase 'live feed real time' over and over and over. It started to be all I could hear.

OK. You've made the news here. Everyone who has a youtube channel is a wannabe guru. I did not know that. Thanks for the insight.

Started listening to rush in 81. Very fond memories of the music in those days. Can't say enough a word of thanks to this power trio from Canada who made music to remember. Condolences to the members of rush and Neil's family. Neil sitting behind his army of brass disks and drums always commanded a performance of a lifetime each and every time. God's speed Neil, you made it happen!

That's it, Ernie. This here is the "alternative community", where everyone with a woo-woo name and a YouTube presence can accuse someone from "the mainstream" of whatever they want, and people will believe it.

This performance here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XPrNGpzeGI) ─ I cannot embed the video because its permissions have recently been changed to disallow playback on any other site than YouTube itself ─ really illustrated Neil's virtuosity as a drummer, but he was also known for his very intellectual lyrics, as those of the song below...

I have fond memories of being backstage around 1979. Austin, Texas was a quaint venue at the time. I had an extra pass, invited my roommate who preferred country and western to the show. She did not seem to enjoy it. I, on the other hand, had a blast. So very close to the band and watching Neil Pearts' long hair fly all over the place along with his amazing drumming. The music, the sound, the band were just fascinating to watch. Enjoyable memories.

Hey Open minded dude - so cool that you were there for that! So many of my favorite memories are concerts that I have been to. Music is magical.

Love the drums. I remember when Rush was starting out and they were playing at local high schools. They kept their dream alive and look at where it took them.

From one fan to another - keep the dreams alive and help other's to keep believing as well!

Thanks for the post!
