UN should co-ordinate plans for dealing with extraterrestrials – and we can't guarantee that aliens will be friendly.World governments should prepare a co-ordinated action plan in case Earth is contacted by aliens, according to scientists.

They argue that a branch of the UN must be given responsibility for "supra-Earth affairs" and formulate a plan for how to deal with extraterrestrials, should they appear.

The comments are part of an extraterrestrial-themed edition of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A published today. In it, scientists examine all aspects of the search for extraterrestrial life, from astronomy and biology to the political and religious fallout that would result from alien contact.

"Will a suitable process based on expert advice from proper and responsible scientists arise at all, or will interests of power and opportunism more probably set the scene?" asked Professor John Zarnecki of the Open University and Dr Martin Dominik of the University of St Andrews in the introductory paper. "A lack of co-ordination can be avoided by creating an overarching framework in a truly global effort governed by an international politically legitimated body." The pair argue that the UN has a ready-made mechanism for such a forum in its Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (Copuos).

Member states of Copuos should put "supra-Earth affairs" on their agenda, say the scientists, and establish structures similar to those proposed for dealing with threats from near-Earth objects, such as asteroids, that might be on a collision course with our planet.

According to Simon Conway Morris, a professor of evolutionary palaeobiology at Cambridge University, anyone planning for alien contact should prepare for the worst.

Evolution on alien worlds, he said, is likely to be Darwinian in nature. Morris argues that life anywhere else in the universe will therefore probably have important similarities with life on Earth – especially if it comes from Earth-like worlds that have similar biological molecules to ours. That means ET might resemble us, warts and all, with our tendencies towards violence and exploitation.

"Why should we 'prepare for the worst'? First, if intelligent aliens exist, they will look just like us, and given our far from glorious history, this should give us pause for thought," wrote Morris in the journal's special issue.

Ted Peters, a professor of systematic theology at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in California, considered what might happen to the world's religions in the event of ET making contact. Conventional wisdom suggests that terrestrial religion would collapse if the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) were confirmed, he wrote.

"Because our religious traditions formulated their key beliefs within an ancient world view now out of date, would shocking new knowledge dislodge our pre-modern dogmas? Are religious believers Earth-centric, so that contact with ET would de-centre and marginalise our sense of self-importance? Do our traditional religions rank us human beings on top of life's hierarchy, so if we meet ETI who are smarter than us will we lose our superior rank? If we are created in God's image, as the biblical traditions teach, will we have to share that divine image with our new neighbours?"

His conclusion, however, is that faith in Earth's major religions would survive intact. "Theologians will not find themselves out of a job. In fact, theologians might relish the new challenges to reformulate classical religious commitments in light of the new and wider vision of God's creation."

"Traditional theologians must then become astrotheologians ... What I forecast is this: contact with extraterrestrial intelligence will expand the existing religious vision that all of creation – including the 13.7bn-year history of the universe replete with all of God's creatures – is the gift of a loving and gracious God," he speculated.

MORE neg ET Spin, although its interesting to see its getting more balanced....

I think I'm just adopting the attitude of 'At least my first contact is not in the form of a forced abduction' and behave as if I'm meeting the in laws. What else can you do? It's not like most of us have a precedent in place for greeting et's.

It's interesting these articles always perceive us as being stuck in all these old religious ideas and we'll suffocate on our own dogma if exposed to an off planet entity. People have been talking about and even expecting aliens for decades. If a large portion of the population has been expecting a visit all these years how much of a shock could it be?

As far as self importance, I think the elite have shown us self importance is over-rated anyway.

If "THEY" were hostile, there would be a pink mist where the earth was! With the technology to travel the stars, one would thing they could 'erase' a 'troublesome' planet almost as an afterthought.

Nice hit piece of aliens from the guardian. right.

If it's going to be the guys from 'Mars attacks', then we need to protect ourselves with the appropriate Slim Whitman records, IIRC.

Exactly. They haven't so far. We are too "valuable" to them and visa-versa.

What we really have to worry about is if malevolent ETs decided to step up their presence in our political structures, etc.

Carmody was right on the ball. The image used in The Guardian is from the movie "Mars Attacks!" which is carefully calculated to portray all aliens as evil, therefore an enemy, just as von Braun predicted. We are being prepared to accept this premise.

You ever notice in things like this it's just "says scientists".

There are literally thousands of schools of thought across hundreds of areas of science, that don't necessarily see eye-to-eye on any points, and yet we've lumped it all together as "scientists".

It's why when me and my friends are arguing about anything anymore we unabashedly proclaim "SCIENCE!" as if it were the final bit of proof required for our perspective to reign.

It is a sorta tabloid-ish approach. Actually it's pretty un-scientific to post a 'scientific' posting that doesn't have footnotes, credits, resources or quotes from someone with a least a brush over of credentials.
Or the inevitable poll.

Yes, Menkaure, and may I add, for those among us who fear some horrible forced abduction, you could well ease your mind by checking out numbers of interviewees in the Camelot Library. There's no denying that extremely frightening abductions do occur, but our fearing that our encounter would be like that is what is likely to bring it about. Learn to release that fear by checking out the following:

Dolores Cannon, for example, has 'proved', by taking her thousands of clients into the deepest level of the hypnotic state (the somnambulist level), that what clients had for years thought of as horrific experiences that had ruined their lives, at this deeper level of trance were seen to have a deeper meaning and as a consequence to be acceptable - something they could now "live with".

Bob Dean, who is probably familiar to most of us as a deeply knowledgeable, insightful and caring man, says that he has always considered his encounters with ETs aboard their craft, not as abductions, but as "visits".

Clifford Stone's encounters have always been "100% positive".

Jim Sparks has been on their craft hundreds of times At first he rebelled but when he changed his attitude his experinces became something to look forward to.

Then there's that most informative book, Communion, by Whitley Strieber, who went from fearing his encounters to finally seeing the beings he met as highly advanced teachers.

Oh no ... the current malevolent earth humans will do enough damage and they are already in power ... so maybe that's the only change you can believe in ?

Did you know that the film "Mars Attacks" was based on a set of bubble gum cards released in 1962 by TOPPS? It was a favorite with children of the era, but parents groups criticized it for its violent and sexual content which finally led to the series being discontinued. In the nineties, Tim Burton used the trading cards as the inspiration for his movie of the same name. The cards were painted by the famous pulp-comic artist, Norm Saunders.

(seems to me he missed the alien and stabbed himself)

There are 66 cards altogether, 55 in the original series, while the last 11 were created in the late 90s.

Hi Everybody,

It seems that there could be some sort of 'softening up' approach being done on at least the British public, although ths report in the Guardian has gone global, hence we are all talking about it here in this forum.

Parallel to this is a series on the History Channel about ETs being our ancestors, where over the week it will show a series of five two hour long programs about the subject along with other out of this world subjects throughout the week. I understood the History Channel would put out programs about, well our history and not hypothesese about other worlds (that would have been on Discovery Channel or Sci Fi or something).

Also over the last day or so was the CNN ran a piece about a new planet being discovered http://www.videosurf.com/video/nasa-finds-new-planet-1254124176 called Keplar10 and the BBC showed images taken from Hubble of Hanny's Voorwerp.

Lots of space news. Is this all to prepare us for an invasion? Not too sure. The UK decided after Winston Churchill (I think it was) ordered an investigation into UFOs, that if ET was aggressive we would have been blown out of the skies by now.

It's all probably to prepare us for a new film being released. Ah...... the news media.

Best regards,

Steve

H.G Wells has some very interesting short stories (being the author of this famous tale), interestingly one called 'The Star' describes the appearance of a 'Nibiru' type celestial body,
which enters the solar System and initiates an Extinction level event on Earth-The story ends with Martian astronomers remarking how little the Earth seemed to be affected from their view-point, despite all life being wiped out. Mr Wells was a man of great vision-pretty good stuff for early 20th century.

so what if 65 different ETs showed up in ships saying the planet is in trouble we need you to board to be evacuated...

are we subconsciously being trained on which ones, not to get on the ship of?

If they fully intended to destroy earth, then yes we would already be destroyed.

That doesn't mean however that their intentions uniformly align with what is best for us (whatever that is ;)).

It is probably more complicated than that. Likely their intentions are not unified, and likely they sometimes go at cross purposes to some of us humans.

The Bengal Tiger finds some friends among humans, and some predators. Human civilization does not, I suppose, have the intention of wiping out the Bengal Tiger. But some of us present considerable danger to some of them.

Even if, as we hope (*), humans are the most predatory of the sentient species on or near earth, still that leaves plenty of room for the case that some other sentient species near us have some elements, some members, who have some intentions that you or I might choose to resist vigorously.

(*) Clarification: I don't hope we are so predatory; but I suspect I am not alone in hoping the other alien species near here are less predatory.

It is very clear that mankind is being prepared for something. I do not think that it is a coincidence that approximately 20 countries have started partial or full disclosure. Also comments from the Vatican and the UN indicate that we are being told by some of the "so called powers" that some form of alien existence is in the cards for mankind. The preparation process seems to be in high gear and it does not take a rocket scientist to connect the dots.

It is no longer a matter of if it is going to happen it is only a matter how and when it is going to happen. It will be up to each one of us to determine if it is a false flag event or a real event. A critical component of understanding the truth will be "who" is going to be presenting this information to the world.

When disclosure finally presents us with one or two smoking guns then we will be very close finding out what is in store. Everyone is talking about 2012, the the vast majority of this is simply hype but some form of verifiable disclosure will probably be in the 2012-2014 time frame.

Your post indicates that the alien event will be a false flag and at the same time you say that the aliens may not be friendly! If there is a false alien event then it would most likely be man made for the purpose of putting weapons in space. If the aliens are not friendly then it would be a real alien (which is what I believe) event that may not turn out very well. Just trying to get some clarificarion.
Thank you for your post!

If we are an experiment of there's then it will be like meeting mommy and Daddy.... ;)

These beings have always been around, us having a war with them would be like Ants taking on the US military complex.

Yup an absurd idea.

The ETs have all the genetic patterns they need to repopulate the Earth after we wipe everything out. Also, remember the Hybrids. We are our own worst enemy. Humans are not evolved enough spiritually to handle the technology we have. It is inevitable for us to destroy ourselves. Unless by some miracle the Military Industrial complex throws down their weapons and starts hugging trees. Do you think they will do this? I doubt it.

Well what a laugh all of this is!

Have Scientists not looked inside any pyramids and inscription on stones all over the world to discover that aliens have always been part of human life.
We have had and still continue to have ongoing dialogue with them.
The good and the bad ones.
So perhaps they need to get off of their butts and see the real world!
Even the lay people of the world have encounters and in communications with them.
So what makes the UN so special to appoint a special person for this ?
It's all smoke and mirrors.
The truth is out there....are you seeking the truth or just sit back in your armchair munching on snacks agreeing with what the government tell you.
I seek the truth....the results are really amazing when you put enough effort into it.
