Some years ago, selling scrap iron from my former building company,I found out that people throw away valuable things for many reasons. Some of the reasons are renewing them, some are considered out fashioned or simply making place for new stuff. Many of them are in such a good shape that deserve to be restored for different purposes. On scrap yards are more "products" then in a DIY store and sometimes more qualitative (in the past things were produced with paying more attention to quality than today).:)My first restoration, about four years ago,was an oven for our Summer kitchen which cost me aprox. 10 euros, twelve times cheaper than the cheapest oven on the market and from that one I was "contaminated with the virus" of saving things from total destruction because:
1-are to valuable;
2-avoid wasting huge amount of energy for recycling and
3-with some skills there could be repurposed, reused and restored, which i better than recovering, recycling and reusing (see 2).
On the other hand at flea and popular markets anyone can find valuable and interesting things, even things that brings memories from everyone childhood or from past beautiful times.

From Russian marshes one Stalinets S65 and one T 34 :)
Stalinets S65
"The S-65 tractor or Stalinets S-65 was a very popular agricultural tractor built by the Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory (Chelyabinskii Traktornyi Zavod – ChTZ) from 1937 until 1941. These tractors were used in military service as they were widely available and capable of towing heavy guns."

Recovered from marsh,an unfinished but functional ISU-152 Zveroboy :)
ISU-152 Zveroboy
"The ISU-152 is a Soviet self-propelled gun developed and used during World War II. It was unofficially nicknamed zveroboy (Russian: Зверобой; "beast killer")[1] in response to several large German tanks and guns coming into service, including Tigers and Panthers. Since the ISU-152's was mounted in a casemate, aiming it was awkward, and had to be done by repositioning the entire vehicle using the tracks. Therefore, it was used as mobile artillery to support more mobile infantry and armor attacks. It continued service into the 1970s and was used in several campaigns and countries."

I have to add a big one :)
EXCELSIOR Drill Press Restoration | Heavy Duty Geared-Head Drill
(27:47 min.)
"I restore a very cool and useful geared drill press that weights around 250kg (550lbs) made by "Officine Meccaniche Mazzoni" in Milan around 1950 (No date found on the drill press so hard to tell precisely when was actually made). The gearbox allows shift between three speed that combined with two speed of the three phase 1.5hp motor enable six speeds to the quill. It's very easy to run any of the six speed as there are no belts to move, just a cople of knobs to turn. I love this so much!
Other than gearbox the drill press it's very straight forward with the only extra of fine quill downfeed via front wheel.
Luckily this machine was in great mechanical condition to start with, not a single broken tooth on gears and not much wear either. Only had to swap table, front wheel and some knobs here and there if too damaged. I had all those parts already so with some turning it has been very easy to adapt things. Of couse the table I swapped is not in perfect condition, I would have loved to turn the front face flat and smooth as there is more than enough material to do so, but my metal lathe it's too small, not enough room to chuck up the table from the other side. I'll have it done if I end up setting up a pump for work cooling as the lip of the table it's also not as thick as the table itself so I guess it would make it harder to catch all cooling fuild. We will see! I'd like to do it as the drill press it's designed to use one with cooling fluid tank in the base and 80mm pump recesses.
If you wonder about cost to get and fix this here are some costs:
- Drill press 250€
- VFD 50€
- Iso32 oil 15€
- Switches and light 30€
- Consumables 50€ more or less
- Paint I had from a previous restoration but it's another 20€ if I had to buy
So all in all we are looking at around 400€. It's not cheap, I know, but it's definetly worth this beauty of cast iron that will serve me well for time to come!
As for how long it took I'd say around 130-150hrs. I started six months ago but did 90% of the work over the last two weeks. Takes long time just because it's so big. Nothing complicated at all!
I usually write a detailed list of product and operations, but for this kind of super long project I have my doubt is useful. So instead I'll list chapters below.
Anyway, in general I did my best to scrape off old paint and de-grease everything before painting with dark green hammered finish paint.
For rust removal I used different methods:
- Steel wire wheel for heavy rust on non critical surfaces like base and work table.
- Scotch brite pads for large machined surfaces like column, quill and meeting surfaces.
- Ultrasonic cleaner with rust removal fluid for small parts like nuts and bolts.
- Citric acid and water for cooling fluid tank and slots on work table and base.
- Some wire wheeling on the bench grinder here and there.
If you have any specific question ask in comments, I'll do my best to reply to frequently asked ones and maybe I'll set a Q&A section below."

I love repairing old machines too. My last job I worked alongside the electrical machines repair shop. I got a rep for knowing how things work at a glance - and how to repair them. The repair boys were always coming over with stuff they couldn't figure out. I didn't always succeed in repairs but I often could find a solution or a work-around.
In another world such a skill would be/was valued. Here and now it is just a quaint talent worthy of survival level pay, nothing more.
A good tradesman, and I mean one that is truly gifted, is part scientist, part engineer, part inventor. The amount they know cannot even be properly quantified and most certainly not tested for by today's standards. It is an innate gift that cannot be taught.
In our world it is the failed student who enters the trades, or a failed athlete, and that pretty much defines what society thinks of them. Since most tradesmen do not have the actual attributes needed they become the followers, lead by the true tradesmen who are in the minority. But since trade schools teach to the least common denominator, the actual pertinent skills and knowledge are not even taught and must be learned on the job by those interested - it is these who are the true tradesmen.
Great thread. An almost lost art...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xBtT9xndTQI meant to post this earlier. (I love this thread! )
All the time I was watching what he was doing with the tire, I was trying to guess what the final product would be. Near the end, I was completely baffled, until the big reveal when he brought his little girl into the video. :)
But while he went in one direction with the tire, I was going another, because I have three large old tires in my workshop (and quite a few tools, as well). My idea was to create a coffee table. And I just might do that.

Thank you Mr. Ryan for you encouraging words!Nice to hear that that instead of get rid of the tires you choose to transform them into a coffee table. With only six bolts, two wrenches,a wooden plank, some paint and a drilling machine the coffee table will be ready faster than I type this post.:blushing:
Indeed these guys let me completely baffled and speechless of what they can do from what people throw away.
A week ago when I was in the city for our monthly shopping,I've been also to my favorite scrap yard and I saw how the heavy truck full with scrap metal just passed by us while we entered leaving with all those "goodies" in it.So,after carefully search on what was left I found only a crippled but very robust clothes dryer rack which I bought it for about 50 cents. Now I only have to replace two hinges and and two plastic "feet" which I have them from other works.:)
The entire work will take me about one hour with two coffee and cigarettes brakes because will be am extremely heavy work.
My next project is a 4 meters/12 feet high modular scaffold from scrap pipes 2 and 1/2 inches.

Nothing surprises me anymore, but it's good when we can really reuse anything, in order to save any resource in the world, especially for fun.
A small part of the market where you can find everything you need and everything you don't need, as long as you have a project or invent one on the spot.

I like this video( below), (especially between 5:53 and 6:18 or between 28:51 and 28:56), it's nice if we manage to look somehow between "screen and images" you can see a lot of "dust particles bright flying at speed or appearing out of nowhere " but it is not dust... I usually call them just orbs :), I think there's a lot of information between all the things there and for them that's cool, maybe :)
Joy is in the air:) for them...anyway orbs fly throughout the video, maybe they also approve the reuse of some "things", the imagination to invent something is cool!
For orbs we can visit also this thread (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?29822-Orbs)

You better keep the shape and find the utility.
"Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products perceived to be of greater quality, such as artistic value or environmental value.
Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other face of the recycling process. Downcycling involves converting materials and products into new materials of lesser quality. Most recycling involves converting or extracting useful materials from a product and creating a different product or material."

Some years ago I've made some silicone molds and a few days ago I found out that by adding mineral spirit to mixture,it can be poured. In addition, combing only silicone with a few drops of glycerin, the mixture will cure faster :)
Silicone: Thin with mineral spirits, sheet pour. Wheelchair assist threshold ramp.

Volume of a cylinder=(3.14)r(squared)h, add+10% for waste
Ratio of silicone to cornstarch=10:1, gives about a 1 hour cure.
White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine (AU/NZ), turpentine substitute, and petroleum spirits, is a petroleum-derived clear liquid used as a common organic solvent in painting. There are also terms for specific kinds of mineral spirits, including Stoddard solvent and solvent naphtha (petroleum). Mineral spirits are often used as a paint thinner, or as a component thereof, though paint thinner is a broader category of solvent.

Long ago, as a teenager, I restored an old Triumph motorcycle, but it was nothing like as old and rusty as this. I remember when my Mom freaked out when she came home one day and found the crankcase in the oven. :)
There were a number of times when I thought, "What's he doing NOW??!" And the whole project must have taken him weeks. A 30 minute video compresses it all into an illusion of seeming so very quick and easy.
