Leunig.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Leunig
He is one of Australia's most insightful, astute and I'd say, aware, cartoonists and social commentators.
He rarely misses the mark and does so usually with gentleness and compassion.
He's possibly one of Australia's greatest cartoonists, a living treasure.

John Clarke was a much loved Australian identity and satirist, passed several years ago.

Oh thank you Bodhicee..........Leunig is medicine in a spiteful world. Two weeks ago when I was feeling numbed by the problems of the world, I took my big book of Leunig to bed with me and laughed myself silly. I woke up refreshed with a slaved heart. I was so appalled at the way my country's media slashed him unmercifully last year, after adoring him most of his career. The dreaded baby falls out of the pram/mother more in love with her mobile phone cartoon. Key points from the abc:
"The cartoonist said he was 'engulfed in free-floating hate' after his drawing was published
His cartoon depicted a mother ignoring her baby while looking at her phone, which some criticized as being unfair to mothers and misogynistic
Leunig denied this, saying the work came from a "special interest" in infant development." Infants need eye-contact, was the essence of it. Well, we all need eye contact. And especially during this world idiocy of the virus, we need to look into the faces of strangers and remind ourselves of our humanity. I can't work out how to insert the picture, but you can see it here.

Meryl, yes I remember that.... lol.
He was SPOT ON and was therefore immensely hated for it by the idealogues of all types; they came out of many different cracks! From all over!
He touched a BIG nerve, for sure lol, which i take to be an unequivocal sign of a UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH BEING TOLD ....
I don't for a moment/didn't believe that he was being malicious.
He was championing the CHILD and all that GUILT came pouring out.
I understand his health is not the greatest (-?). I hope he weathered the attacks unscathed.
I'm grateful he raised the point. Everyone sees it happening EVERYWHERE, and what? it can't be mentioned?? pfft.

Great laughs, thanks. I love Leunig. When I used to get depressed by life I would pull out a couple of his books of cartoons, my favourite being one called "Ramming the Shears", which hhas a takeoff of a famous Australian painting called Shearing the Rams. In the Leunig version, there is a ram with a gleeful look, about to shove a pair of shears up a shearer's bum. I laugh just thinking about it.

Hi Violet! I remember that one! It was really wicked!!
This is the painting, considered a masterpiece, by Tom Roberts, Impressionist, who only just happens to be one of Australia's most revered painters..(!):

Yes I wouldn't associate the word 'vicious' with any part of Leunig! Everything about him suggests gentleness and humility; i think that is why he is so astute, and loved.

I did not know of Leunig's work before this thread and just love him like he is my brother. It's like we grew up together and saw the world in just that particularly same deliciously skewed POV. It is like feeling strong because we always had one another to laugh about the absurdity of what we saw. The way we knew an edge between laughter and tears and a way out kept us sane. The fact that we will together never lose our way through the thickets is so comforting. Thanks !
PRAYERS (https://www.leunig.com.au/works/prayers)
I use the word 'God' conscious of the fact that there are many who may find it objectionable – and others who may find my casual use of the word too irreverent or shallow. For all sorts of reasons people can be very touchy about this word; in my view they seem either too earnest, too proprietorial, too fanatical, too averse, too phobic... There is however no ultimate authority or definition. The word is yours or mine to make of it and hold or discard it as we will…"God" as a sort of shorthand password, an inconclusive folk word, a signpost, a catalyst, a spark, a stepping stone, a simple makeshift handle ... A simple robust word used lightly and loosely or as devoutly and deeply as we might feel – a bridge, and a way to break free from this material world for a moment or two, a day or two... or for what's left of a lifetime.
God help us to change.
To change ourselves and to change our world.
To know the need for it. To deal with the pain of it.
To feel the joy of it.
To undertake the journey without understanding the destination.
The art of gentle revolution.
Amen.

Here in Australia tomorrow will be "Anzac Day", a much venerated occasion supposedly paying tribute initially to the 'brave', poor New Zealander and Aussie soldiers sent to their death by inept Brit commanders WW1, Gallipoli, Turkey and now more recently war veterans in general.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzac_Day
Over recent years, as more and more aging veterans pass away, the Australian Government has spent much cash manufacturing glamorous, heroic, big production Anzac Day commemorations, complete with live feeds from Turkey itself.
My cynical mind tells me this is all for the purpose of ensuring enough youth of today continue to enlist, possibly to serve as fodder for the insatiable maw of war.
Lured in by a genuine, heroic desire to be of service and protect what's loved these young peoples' beautiful spirit is soiled and sundered in the face of the atrocity of having to kill to protect.
It's an impossible dilemma.. How to have no war in this world and yet protect from another's avaricious intent?

Michael Leunig, that is a nice positive sounding name; I know I am biased because I am also named Michael. When I was a boy, my good friend Martin Green's mum used to call me 'Michael the Archangel ', she was Irish and rather beautiful, I liked her saying this!
This is one of my old favourite Leunig cartoons, he is an unusual man, and he is never frightened to speak his heart, which is very unfashionable in these times:

:( Leunig's been sacked from his cover slot on The Age:
https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/media/cartoonist-michael-leunig-axed-from-prime-spot-at-the-age-over-offensive-vaccine-image/news-story/3b6b99a4101ebe53df58cb21827df0d4
He told The Australian that The Age’s editor Gay Alcorn called him soon after she banned the cartoon to “break the news gently” that he was no longer wanted on the editorial page.
He said he was told he was “out of touch with the readership”.
“Gay feels this type of cartoon is not in line with public sentiment, and The Age’s readership, who it does seem are largely in favour of the Andrews Covid narrative,” he said. “But my job is to challenge the status quo, and that has always been the job of the cartoonist.”
This was the cartoon that drew the ire:

I believe it is The Age that is out of touch, that was a disgraceful act on their part, it played out like one of the man's more ironic cartoons, you can picture it a room with a panel of morally correct types, looking smug and disapprovingly on Mike Leunig. This is a sad, deeply wrong action.

In medieval times, the Court Jester was always the one who gave wise advice to the King — and was able to because they'd never get executed for their quirkiness, which was an integral part of their customary role.
Comedians, in every culture other than totalitarian ones, have always been the untouchables who get to point things out that others can't say.

I believe it is The Age that is out of touch, that was a disgraceful act on their part, it played out like one of the man's more ironic cartoons, you can picture it a room with a panel of morally correct types, looking smug and disapprovingly on Mike Leunig. This is a sad, deeply wrong action.Of course it is. In medieval times, the Court Jester was always the one who gave wise advice to the King — and was able to because they'd never get executed for their quirkiness, which was an integral part of their customary role.
Comedians, in every culture other than totalitarian ones, have always been the untouchables who get to point things out that others can't say.
So astutely observed Bill. We need those untouchable ones more than ever these days of course. Rogan pointed out that Will Smith's 'attack' (my inverted commas, to me it was an attack) on Chris Rock was a similar type of betrayal. These ones, these commentators, yep, they're precious. Of course that makes the angry herd salivate for their blood even more in its fury.

"Michael Leunig has been dismissed from The Age almost 55 years after he penned his first cartoon for the paper.
As he heads out the door he reflects on how journalism has changed over the years and the importance of political cartoonists for democracy.
Both former editor Gay Alcorn and the Nine Network were approached for this interview but declined to comment. "
Crazy. Leunig is regarded as a Living Treasure here in Oz but he's obviously not treasured when it comes to newspaper sales. His is a voice of reason, insightful, incisive, tender and usual spot on.

Blessed be the teapot.
I have beautiful memories of the family Tea Pot from the 1960's, each morning the Tea pot would be there, hot and doing its sacred work under the psychedelic tea-cozy! This tea cozy was a work of art, it looked like a Russian hat and me and my younger brother used to take it turns to wear it around the house, but anyway the Tea-Pot was a persistent reminder that all was well with the world and comfort and time was available to do all of those morning reflections and listening to the BBC breakfast music program on the family radio...this was where I first heard The Beatles, and felt uplifted as I struggled to school each day. These days I have a disgusting large mug which I place tea bags in (2 extra strong Dilmah thanks!) instead of a Tea Pot, I think tea pots have gone from most people's daily lives - more the pity.

Oh, and I have been a huge fan of Michael Leunig since for ages, his is a truly maverick spirit, and he has enormous insight into the human condition and the outrages of modern life, it does not surprise me they have sacked him, he was a voice of truth, and that is always very dangerous to propagandists.

I have to wonder about The Age (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Age), the Australian newspaper which has over 5 million readers. They have hundreds if not thousands of employees and one of them is one of the world's most famous cartoonists, and certainly Australia's most famous.
So then you need to have some cutbacks a let a small percentage of staff go. Do you really let go of one of your most famous people???
Or maybe does this cartoon have something to do with it???

Sad to hear of Michael leunig’s death yesterday
Michael Leunig, Australian cartoonist, dies aged 79

During his final days, Leunig was surrounded by his children, loved ones, classical music and sunflowers, his studio announced on social media
The Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig has died aged 79, his studio has announced on Instagram.
“The pen has run dry, its ink no longer flowing — yet Mr. Curly and his ducks will remain etched in our hearts, cherished and eternal,” the post on Thursday night read.
“Michael Leunig passed away peacefully today, in the early hours of December 19, 2024. During his final days, he was surrounded by his children, loved ones, and sunflowers — accompanied as ever, by his dear old friends, Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven.”
Leunig was born in East Melbourne in June 1945. He said his political consciousness intensified when he received a notice for military conscription in 1965 during the Vietnam War. He was rejected for service due to being deaf in one ear.
Leunig had drawn cartoons for the Age newspaper since 1969, before his contract was ended by the outlet in August this year, after 55 years.
In 1999 Leunig was declared a national living treasure by the National Trust for his contributions to Australian culture.
In recent years, Leunig’s views critical of “no jab no play” policies for vaccination, that were sometimes apparent in his cartoons published in the Age, drew controversy, while a cartoon depicting a young mother as “too busy on Instagram” to look after her child brought a rebuke from his sister, Mary.
His parting of ways with the publication he worked for over 50 years was a bitter one, with the cartoonist telling the Australian: “It’s almost embarrassing now to say that I worked for The Age, it’s become like a tacky tabloid.”
Leunig said on his blog after his contract was ended that although it would require him to tighten his belt, he was looking forward to the next chapter.
“I have been refreshed and granted a precious new chapter of life in which to plant trees, to paint pictures, to talk to the birds and kangaroos, to harvest my own vegetables and avocados, to appreciate all those who have helped and encouraged me, to be with friends and loved ones, to get on with the memoir and various projects; to be surprised and changed, to be grateful, to listen to music and birdsong, to grow, to wonder, to die… and of course, to be a funny old grandfather in the garden.”
His last cartoon was published on his website at the end of August.

I join with many, many people in Australia and well beyond these shores in feeling sad, an individual such as Michael Leunig is a rare event - this man had a gift/talent/way of viewing human society that enabled him to express very powerful ideas in a highly condensed and distinctive way, his sense of humour is uniquely compassionate, together with an ironic perspective and deep political understanding that was always 100% on-target: he was a teller of painful truths, and such people always generate polarised responses, especially amongst the 'upper crust' - they had to extend an apparent acceptance of his views, while nurturing quiet resentments with his perspicacity and unwavering dedication to humanity. I was appalled to discover The Age had terminated his contract recently, Michael Leunig became another casualty of the abysmal 'Covid' project, his courageous cartoon depicting the jab mandate spoke too eloquently; this was a disgusting act of extreme corporate and political correctness, chilling in its assumed self righteous merit. Farewell to Leunig, beloved upholder of human-ness. RIP.
