We have been through quite a few mass extinctions and that has been scientifically proved.
I posted quite some time back on the Yellowstone Volcano a BBC documentary and two scientists of different disciplines were discussing this and one had information about the human gene pool -- and it seems there are bottle necks in this where the human race may have had near extinction down to a start all over again figure several thousand.
