I am surprised that masks are still so prevalent today!

I called a medical office here in Canada and the phone message was all about covid protocol when coming to the building.

Still??

I would have dismissed this as just being something that has not been updated, except that I saw a commercial yesterday on local media regarding wearing a mask in public.

They do not want to lose their pandemic position - this is obvious. Makes me wonder how long before another push by the governments to knock the public down.

We must ALL work together to raise everyone’s awareness that people in government, business, transportation, schools and universities have failed to install the Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment that would remove aerosolized pathogens that we might breathe in while working, shopping, eating, traveling or learning in their facilities.

DIRTY INDOOR AIR CANNOT BE PURIFIED WITH MASKS.
WE CANNOT ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE TORTURED TO MAKE UP FOR THEIR FAILURES TO INSTALL THE HVAC EQUIPMENT THAT WOULD PROTECT EVERYONE.
THEY MUST BE BLAMED AND SHAMED FOR THEIR FAILURES.
Any and all employers, school officials, business owners or other facilities and organizations that attempt to require people to wear masks while performing their job, traveling, attending class, shopping in their store, eating in their restaurant or attending an event are openly admitting that they have failed to install the air purification, circulation and filtration equipment that is necessary to maintain a safe facility.

Every business owner has the moral and ethical responsibility to ensure that they have done everything possible to ensure that the air within their facility has been purified for the safety of their employees and their patrons.

By requiring people to wear masks, they are admitting their failure and their guilt and they are attempting to shift the responsibility onto you, their customer.

THEY HAVE FAILED to install the HVAC equipment that is necessary to clean the indoor air of their facility and they are tacitly admitting that they are operating their business in an unsafe manner.

They should be ashamed of themselves for failing to act and for continuing to operate their business in an unsafe manner. They have literally had years to make the necessary changes, but they have clearly placed profits over the safety of others.

Masks do not work. The research is below.
The spaces within all types of masks are too large to effectively filter out aerosolized pathogens.

Never before has it been so important for you to stand up for your rights! Mandatory medicine and mandated interventions such as social distancing and mask-wearing have no place in a free society. A study from South Korea has found that N95 masks can release harmful chemicals at levels eight times higher than safety guidelines suggest. But a study quietly re-shared by the National Institutes of Health in spring suggests the tight-fitting mask may expose users to dangerous levels of toxic chemicals.

Researchers from Jeonbuk National University in South Korea (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/south-korea/index.html) looked at two types of disposable medical-grade masks, as well as several reusable cotton masks.

The study found that the chemicals released by these masks had eight times the recommended safety limit of toxic volatile organic compounds (TVOCs).
Inhaling TVOCs has been linked to health issues like headaches and nausea, while prolonged and repeated use has been linked to organ damage and even cancer.

This suggests that the packaging of these masks could play a role in the amount of chemicals they have.

The study was published in the journal Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety and on the NIH‘s website.

The NIH said: “Inclusion in an NLM database does not imply endorsement of, or agreement with, the contents by NLM or the National Institutes of Health.”
The researchers found that the levels of TVOCs were 14 times lower in cloth masks and didn’t pose a risk to human health.

However, the study did not measure the effect of people actually wearing the masks.

Dr. Stuart Fischer, an internal medicine physician in New York, told DailyMail.com that strong conclusions couldn‘t be drawn from the study.
However, he did say that increasingly evidence has shown the drawbacks of mask-wearing. He added that “there seems to be diminishing returns on the need for masks.”

In the latest study, researchers tested 14 disposable and cloth masks purchased online by measuring the amount of TVOCs in them. The disposable masks were KFAD and KF94 models, which were made from thermoplastics polypropylene and polyurethane nylon.

These masks have been popularized in South Korea, where the study was conducted, whereas KN95s are more popular in the U.S.
However, their differences are miniscule. KFADs and KF94s filter 94% of particles, while KN95s filter 95%.

The cloth masks were made from cotton, ramie – a vegetable fibre – and polyurethane.

“These TVOC concentration levels corresponded to a level that is harmless to the human body (no relevant health-related concerns),” the researchers wrote.

However, the disposable masks contained up to 14 times the TVOCs than cotton masks.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends keeping TVOC levels below 0.5 parts per million in indoor air.

The sample with the highest amount of TVOCs had 4,808 cubic meters per microgram, which is about 4.8 parts per million.

That’s more than eight times the recommended limit.

This post goes a little against the grain as I welcome wearing masks in certain circumstances. That's because I'm asthmatic, and one of my triggers is a sudden change in the weather. As people who live in the UK know, weather fluctuations are the norm here (understatement), but I only discovered the benefits of wearing a mask during lockdown. Breathing in and out stale air for a short while more than compensates for being able to ditch the steroids, which I had been taking for 45 years. It's wonderful to be steroid-free :thumbsup:

The principle behind normalizing the wearing of masks isn't to keep you from getting sick. It's to help minimize spread by limiting how many droplets of saliva you expel by simply speaking/breathing, droplets which, if infected, could very well transmit the virus to another person, and so on. Are masks fool-proof? Absolutely not. And nobody is saying they are, either. At least, nobody with basic sense. But they do help. And help isn't hurting anyone. Something is better than nothing.


Look at countries where wearing masks during sickness has been a cultural, standard practice for decades. South Korea, Singapore, Japan. Look at how much lower their infection rates per capita are, despite how their population is several times denser than, say, the US or Canada. Normalized wearing of masks has no small role in lower transmission rates in these nations. It's not a matter of politics there, or of trusting the government. It's something you just do, without thinking twice, long before this virus was a thing. It's accepted as a viable way to minimize spread of sickness, as well as basic manners and consideration to those around you.


I'm noticing this one little nugget of misinformation spreading like wildfire; the idea that wearing masks is meant to keep you, the wearer, safe from transmission. Not so. It is well known that the virus is so miniscule that unless you have N-95 or better, it's going to pass right through your homemade number.


The principle behind wearing masks is simply to reduce the odds of an infection person spreading it to others, as less saliva droplets make their way out into the air for an unsuspecting passerby to come into contact with. That's it. Nothing more.


That's what experts say, that's what they're advocating, and the only reason why it wasn't stressed from early on was to prevent mass hoarding of masks that would cause a shortage for those who need them (healthcare workers, etc).

Our great grandparents were drafted in a world war and forced to fight and endure horrible, traumatic evils to keep the world in something of a functional state.


We're being asked to stay inside, entertain ourselves, and wear face masks. It shouldn't be this difficult.

My perspective has changed in some ways and not in others.

Overall, it’s clear to me now (and has been for some time) that the Covid debacle was largely a farce in the sense that it was blown way out of proportion and served as an ideal manufactured catalyst to usher in all kinds of profound changes to society. Nearly all of them negative.

That being said, I still think there was a general overreaction when it comes to masks, both for those that were pro and anti-mask. Myself included.

I still believe that in most cases, mask wearing is an effective but imperfect way of limiting any kind of viral spread (NOT self-protective). It’s a fact that in Asian countries wearing masks when one has a cold, etc. has been completely normalized, and for good reason. The primary method of viral transmission is through mucus and saliva droplets from breathing/sneezing. A mask is a simple way to reduce those significantly. When I get sick, I occasionally wear a mask the first few days when out and about, out of consideration for others. That being said, I haven’t worn a mask on a regular basis since late 2020/early 2021. By that time it was completely clear to me that Covid was largely a psyop of gargantuan proportion.

I’m also fundamentally against any mandates for masks or vaccines of any kind, the same way I’m against outlawing abortion or hate speech laws. All are an affront to personal liberty.

It's actually a sincere question and I hope Tam responds**EDIT, posted before I saw Tam's response above** In hindsight, her post (April 2020) provides insight on why this issue is and continues to be so polarizing, divisive, and political. Every point she makes is well articulated, reasoned, and valid--that is, if one subscribes to a few fundamental givens in understanding reality. The interesting thing is, these givens are political in nature. Some subscribe to them, some don't (roughly half of the population each way as far as I can tell). That is, there are fundamentally differing paradigms of understanding the world along political lines, and depending on where one sits on that continuum will likely determine how one views this issue.

As a matter of basic manners, and out of respect, I did wear a mask around those who fell into a differing paradigm of understanding the world. (I don't generally spit on people--but yes, masks do prevent salvia droplets from going airborne). But they do not prevent the virus itself from going airborne. I think by now we all agree. Masks also mitigate the spread of infectious bacteria, which may explain the lower infection rates per capita in the countries Tam cites.

But regardless of the minutia of the salvia argument, the major factor that attributes to the political way people perceive this issue is the nature by which they perceive and process information itself, e.g., what the experts say...or, at best, what people are able to glean critically on their own from the experts and from expert systems. There are those who simply trust the information of authority, what the experts say, "the science", if you will, as a given cornerstone of reality. It's not that this group beholds a blinded faith in such information--they do recognize expert information is not absolute and sometimes wrong (which is why they indulge those with whom they disagree in argument)--but they do behold a blinded faith that the information has been honestly and neutrally vetted. This is how they understand the world. So of course to those who view the world in this way, if "experts" and "science" say it's so, those who go against the narrative are ignorant, at best, but mostly just "selfish as*holes".

Then there are those who understand the world differently. They perceive information itself (especially "official" information) as inherently dishonest, founded on propaganda, and vetted and/or censored by agenda-driven motives. In short, information, so-called science, higher-education, and any and all cultural institutions charged with inculcating the collective worldview is corrupted from the root. The same flexibility holds true for this demographic. It's not that the all information is necessarily tainted; some information may be honest, reliable, neutrally vetted and founded on truth (that's why they indulge those with whom they disagree in argument), but this sect on the political spectrum does behold a profound mistrust of authority and staunchly guards an unwillingness to accept information on its face, even information that seems at first glance instinctually true or seemingly benign (accepting information that "appears" true on its face, and from an invisible source, is the magician's craftiest trick).

To those with a countering worldview (often political in nature), that argument does hold water (and boils it too) like an iron caldron. To those who understand reality as a series of random occurrences of collective movement, however, with no underlying directives or motives, hidden or otherwise, Orwell is just a dystopian (and stodgy) author of fiction who may as well be writing about fairies and goblins. Only children and the foolish fear and dread such things; of course an "Orwellian regime" seems ridiculous to those who view the world this way. But to the former, Orwell isn't just a fiction writer; he's a soothsayer, a profit.

Today on CNN, after devastating study citations from the interviewer showing that masks don't work, Fauci responded: "but masks work on an individual level".

But this is nonsense. Here's why.

To do science on masks, you have a masked group and an unmasked group. You compare the rate of infection in each group. This is called a randomized trial. This is how science is done.

If the rate of infection is the same, then masks don't work. This was what the studies on masks showed. No difference.

Now, there is simply no such thing as scientific studies showing that "masks work at the individual level".

Fauci either doesn't understand how science works or he is lying and making things up.

It really is that simple. Fauci is saying gobbledygook in order to keep the idea of masks alive. It's incredibly shameful for Fauci to abuse science in this way. But it's par for the course in the way he has communicated science throughout the entire pandemic.

One of the most influential federal health journals in the United States has published unsupported claims about the benefits of masks in preventing transmission of COVID-19, according to authors of a manuscript recently accepted for publication in The American Journal of Medicine.

The claims come from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), which has a powerfully persuasive effect on public health decision-making. How the studies published in the MMWR advance scientific understanding "remain largely opaque to the general public," the authors wrote in the pre-proofed paper. For this reason, the authors expressed, it is essential to dig into how agency conclusions—and subsequent recommendations that affect citizens across the globe—are made.
Researchers at the University of California–San Francisco and the University of Southern Denmark analyzed 77 studies published after 2019. Conclusions favoring masks were seen in over 75 percent of the studies.

However, after further scrutiny, researchers discovered questionable qualities in most of the studies—qualities that could easily misrepresent results and confuse readers such as health care professionals, researchers, and the public. These qualities included poor study design, scarcity of statistical significance, dubious methods for assessing mask effectiveness, failure to cite conflicting data, and lack of randomization.

Moreover, over 50 percent of the studies failed to use appropriate language when synthesizing findings, labeling results as causal instead of correlative or associative. Scientific principles dictate that causation cannot be inferred based on retrospective, cross-sectional, or observational designs—the only three designs used across all 77 studies.

The findings raise concern about the scientific journal's reliability for informing health policy—a journal that does not require external peer review before publication, according to the authors.

"Over 60% of the included studies concluded masks were effective without statistically significant evidence to support this," the authors wrote, noting that less than 15 percent of the 77 studies did provide such evidence. "For clinicians, simply reading the report conclusions pertaining to masks in MMWR may be misleading for advising patients and making health policy recommendations."

What Is the MMWR?
The CDC's MMWR is a long-established series of individual reports sent to the agency weekly by state health departments. State-by-state data are then pooled to form a summary representing the tracking and monitoring of specific health-related events like disease outbreaks, infections, and deaths, as well as the current status of other important health topics.
According to the CDC website, health officials refer to the MMWR as “the voice of CDC” and tout it as a "primary vehicle for scientific publication of timely, reliable, authoritative, accurate, objective, and useful public health information and recommendations."

What Did the MMWR Publish?
Of the 77 studies published in the MMWR, only 30 percent tested mask effectiveness, according to the pre-proofed paper. Despite this, over 75 percent concluded masks could thwart viral transmission, and only a fraction showed the necessary statistics to make this claim. Four studies reported more COVID-19 cases among the masking group than the control, yet all four concluded masks were effective.
None of the studies used a randomized control trial design, considered the gold standard in research design and the only way cause and effect can be determined.


"MMWR studies consistently drawing conclusions about mask effectiveness without supporting evidence is particularly problematic and difficult to justify considering the totality of randomized evidence about the use of surgical or N95 masks to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses has been negative," the authors wrote.

Strong Conclusions Despite Lack of Evidence
"None of the MMWR studies were randomized and none mentioned higher-quality randomized studies, which fail to find evidence of mask effectiveness," the authors wrote. "Our findings highlight the [MMRW]’s lack of reliance on high-quality data and a tendency to make strong but unsupported causal conclusions about mask effectiveness."
As of May, the CDC continues to recommend masks for people 2 years and older, though recommendations differ based on COVID-19 hospitalization rates across the country. According to agency health officials, vaccination and masking will reduce the spread of COVID-19 and ease the burden on the health care system.
