The highly respected astronomer, Carl Sagan, back in 1977 [website: The Carl Sagan Portal] was one of the group that, at NASA's suggestion, sent a message out into space in Voyager, in the hope of an answer coming back - in the, hopefully, not too distant future.
At the same time President Carter, who had had a close encounter himself, made the following statement : "We cast this message into the cosmos . . . Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, some - - perhaps many - - may have inhabited planet and space-faring civilizations. If one such civilization intercepts Voyager and can understand these recorded contents, here is our message: We are trying to survive our time so that we may live into yours. We hope some day, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination and our goodwill in a vast and awesome universe."

P.S. What American president other than JFK and maybe Eisenhower could have spoken their message in words such as these, that so resonate with probably most of us on this forum? And may I suggest that it is not that the question is profound here, but that your answer to the question could be.
