I'm sure most of you are familiar with "the dodo", but for those who aren't..
It's a site that offers these heartwarming videos of abused animals that always ends happily. They're like short 5-7 minute docs about the animal's journey from near death and/or homelessness to finding a loving home/owner. If you're not a little misty at the end of these there may be something very wrong with you...
Enjoy.

I've watched tons of their videos on youtube, didn't know they have an official website though.
I've had a thought for some time. When socializing I've posed this question several times and everyone generally agrees. Question: When you hear about an assault, or a murder, in your city how do you react? Speaking for myself, I'm somewhat indifferent. If you read a report of someone who abused an animal how do you react? I want that person harshly punished. Isn't this messed up? It's as if I'm placing animals over people.
I've helped break up fist fights before and in that situation we're generally trying to chill everyone out. But if I saw someone beating an animal then I'd want to take a brick to their head. That's hyperbole, I wouldn't do that, but I think you get what I'm saying.

Good question Strat.
I think it's because the animal being abused is usually harmless and unable to fight back. There is something in almost every human being, no matter how apathetic, that finds that utterly sickening. It's existentially unacceptable.

This site is a fantastic creation and I find I must watch something daily. Like a needed drug. These videos truly inspire me.
It is a deeply entrenched belief that human beings are superior to the animal world. Not so!
People who rescue abused animals show the very best aspects of humanity: empathy, dedication, deep compassion.
These dear animals are so ready to forgive the atrocities done unto them; they are incredible teachers and guides.

I think I have always been blessed to have animals in my life.
We are here for something that is simple, beautiful and powerful and bold and genuine, the beauty of animal souls is one of the most honest pleasures of being here.
When I call the animals and see them running towards me, I feel at home and I feel responsible, taking part in their simple joy of being. I really feel alive when I see them so happy it is a magic because I am put face to face with the wonderful feeling of what I am to them and they to me.
They make me recognize intuition as language, there is so much in their souls that I just have to trust. I learned about the joy from them, they were my healing.
There are souls with names who are always close to us.
The dignity with which some animals resist any incident I think teaches us at least patience and how to stay calm.
If I could thank all the animals for their love, trust, gentleness and nature, it would certainly be something said without words, only from my heart, to their heart.:happy dog:

That’s because we have been desensitized from the constant human vs human violence in all the gore movies and violent video games that we been exposed to since childhood.

Fake or not, I think something like that could certainly happen, probably has happened, and somebody has probably captured it on video, or will do.
I think the real point is that cats become very attached to their owners, just like dogs do, and are certainly intelligent enough to recognize someone from a video.
And that cat is adorable, regardless of who or what is on the video.

We live in a strange, postmodern world now where nearly everything is performative. It's become one giant LARP. And people have been disingenuous for so long now that they don't even know they're being disingenuous, and even if they do they dont care. Disingenuity itself has become normalized, so the shame and embarrassment that would normally accompany it no longer exists.
Having said that, I think Nat is right on in everything she said there in her post above.

I love Onawah's video of the cat watching his deceased owner on the computer and I agree that all animals (particularly companion ones) do experience emotions of (conditional) love and loss. One of the stories that always moved me so much was the animal spirit communicator from South Africa (can't remember her name) who had communicated with a very angry, aggressive cockatoo at a parrot sanctuary. She had been called in to find out why this parrot was so upset, refusing to mix with the other parrots, aggressive and clearly very unhappy. When the communicator connected with the parrot, s/he conveyed such powerful emotions of grief and unhappiness that it left the communicator in tears. And, as it turned out, there was a very strong reason for this poor creature's misery. Apparently s/he had been with an Australian guy since pretty much hatching. He had cared for her and she had grown up and bonded with him for quite a few years (as I recall). The man had to return to Australia and could not take the parrot with him so he left her at this sanctuary where she had been for a couple of weeks or so before the communicator was called in. The parrot was absolutely grief stricken at the loss of this man who she had clearly loved so much and s/he couldn't understand where he was and why he had left her. This loss was unbearable for her and a couple of weeks after this communication, the poor creature literally died of grief. This story really got me and I still have an image of that video and the heart rending reason behind that parrot's behaviour. The communicator was in tears and so was I - to this day I feel so sad just thinking about this. I sure hope at one point, in some way, there will be a grand reunion for this pair. So, there are so many stories and incidents proving, like humans, all animals do have genuine strong emotional attachments with each other and their caretakers.
However, the internet seems to be replete with "rescue" stories where humans stumble on an animal in some kind of danger/predicament - getting caught up in fences, wires, strings, falling off cliffs, etc., etc. - the list is very long. I gotta say I am suspicious of a lot of these rescue stories. It seems so convenient and well-timed to me that someone is out walking and comes upon a scene where some animal is in distress. There seems to be a formula to this where that person is usually with someone else who has a cell phone and is able to catch the "rescue" and load it on youtube. I am a bit skeptical of some of these encounters (not to say that it doesn't ever happen - I'm sure there are lots of genuine accounts).I just feel some of these rescues are staged and sure hope that these are not "created" just so someone can load it on youtube where many of these videos have gone viral and garner a bit of fame, accolades, perhaps a spot on a talk show or a similar forum for the rescuer, maybe even some money in the pocket.

In a life or death situation, I of course would choose human over animal lives. But a human is much more capable, in today's society - with its giveaways and handouts etc to survive than an animal who may need human intervention - against humanity - because the number one problem for animals is that many have become spoiled and can no longer rely on their inborn instincts of survival. So a human creates or aids a situation with an animal - and when they get bored they dispose of them. Would they do that to their own child? Probably not. But would would do it to other children - possibly, and in many cases to animals for sure. That's all I am saying.

What if you were drowning in a river along with a sheep? And what if, the person diving in to rescue you only had the time, before you both went under, to save one of you? If that person chose to save the sheep, deeming your life was of lesser value than the sheep's life, I wonder what your opinion of him might be.
The reason animals are better behaved is because they're basic organisms - they belong to a lower order. They do not have the free will to misbehave, because they are driven by instinct. They are not individualized, and therefore do not come with the same clutter of intellectual, logical, conceptual, and emotional luggage (etc) that humans are bogged down with and which lead us to waywardness. We are allowed – in fact meant – to have this waywardness, because that is how we learn lessons, and is how we evolve.
We possess these things because we sit much higher in the tree of life. I would not say exactly that Human life has more value than Animal life, but it is so that Human life is more important than Animal life; so in the example cited above the Human must take precedent over the sheep, or any other animal, and should be the one that is saved.
Ultimately, the very same spiritual energy that animates a human also animates an animal, it came from the same place: spirit. But we are endowed with very different energy-types. We have that free will which they do not, and packaged with that free will is responsibility. It elevates us to a position where animals and nature in general (and the Earth itself) are essentially under our care and protection. This is an understanding that humans are still evolving towards.

Long ago I divided human beings into two types, one that loves humans most, and the other that loves animals most. I am in the latter group.

Well my opinion would be that he was human after all and thus made his choice. A dog would have been smarter - my dog would have pulled me in and then the sheep. I never sit and wait for others to help me out of situations. If they choose to do so, great. But I don't count on them to do so. Nor do I count on my animals to make the right decisions or to help me either - although by their nature, an animal cared for properly will protect the home, or give warning, since it is in their nature to do so. But I would warn them of danger as well - and do so every day.
Yes, everything is, fortunately, headed towards a point of advancement, both animals and humans by the way.
I have heard the Christian idea that only man has a spirit - very similar to their idea of manifest destiny - when some were considered more valuable and deserving than other humans.
I don't buy it - but then again I believe in reincarnation.
I mentioned before that I would value a human's life over an animal given the choice - it's in one of my comments above. But I believe that the mark of a man is how he stoops to help those who need it - man or animal.

To our surprise, the sensations of having direct contact with the snakes were extremely calming and soothing, quite unlike anything we had ever experienced before.
(I felt very sorry for the poor rats that were fed live to the snakes, however. )

"Stevie the pangolin was rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. When he was brought to the Johannesburg Wildlife Vet Hospital, he met Dr. Kelsey Skinner and accepted her as his new mom. Kelsey fed him bottles, even burped him, and took him for walks to find termite mounds. On the way, Stevie rode on her back and stopped to play with his favorite rock. Now Stevie has been released back to the wild to live on his own, but Kelsey will always be grateful for her time with Stevie.
Special thanks to Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital & African Pangolin Working Group for all the wonderful work they do. "The last place you would expect to see an Orca is on dry land but that is where a young female Orca found herself stranded one morning in July 2015, along the shore of British Columbia. Orcas, also called Killer Whales, are the largest members of the dolphin family and these distinctive, black and white mammals hunt in pods in these seas. This naïve Orca obviously made a miscalculation and when the tide went out, she became trapped on sharp rocks – in pain and distress - unable to swim away. When Rescuers Arrived, Something incredible Happened."
