View Full Version : [FIXED NOW] New member registration, Password reset, Email via profile page and Contact us links are all broken.

Folks (members and guests!) — this is an expanded update to this thread from a few days ago:

IMPORTANT: the Password Auto-reset is broken, and also the Contact Us link (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?113183-IMPORTANT-the-Password-Auto-reset-is-broken-and-also-the-Contact-Us-link)

We've done some more testing, and rather to our horror the following are ALL broken.

Many new applicants are never receiving their email after registering. They can register with no problem, but after that most just aren't getting the application form to complete.

The 'Contact Us' link (at the foot of each forum page) isn't working. Messages seem to be sent, but are never received by us.
The internal email link to another member via their profile page isn't working. (This depends on the 'Contact Us' 'sendmessage' script, so that's the same problem.)
The password auto-reset link isn't working. (Members who've lost their passwords never get the reset email.)

I've edited the two important links http://projectavalon.net/forum4/sendmessage.php and http://projectavalon.net/forum4/register.php with a message to ask anyone please to contact us at staff@projectavalon.net (staff@prpjectavalon.net). (That still works perfectly! :) ) We can handle membership applications and password resets manually with no problems.

For anyone who's been affected by this, we sincerely apologize. And we also apologize for not fully realizing the extent of the problem until now. (OMG! :facepalm.) When things SEEM to be sent and working fine with no error messages, but never actually arrive elsewhere, sometimes it's hard to know that there's a problem out there.

Tommy (our highly skilled senior admin) is fully aware of this now, and (for software geeks reading this) it might well be a PHP problem resulting from the server move earlier this year. If so, it may be easily fixed. We promise to keep you closely updated. No news here simply means it's not been repaired yet.

An update. Armed with a strong cup of :coffee: I've been doing a little smart searching.

The registration process suddenly broke on 13 October. We can nail that down to the day.

The contact form (both to the mods and sending emails to another member) broke sometime after 23 June. But we can't be sure exactly when, as contact messages we receive don't come in every day. And internally sent emails to another member (via their profile) are something we'd never see or know about, so we have no info about that.

These dates will help Tommy figure out what broke, where, and how. (The logs will reveal a lot, but only he will be able to interpret them. :) )

Hi Bill,

I am able to send/receive a private message (not sure if there is email involved though) to another member, no problems at all from my side.

Thanks for the update.

Thanks for the update.Yes, and many thanks — member-to member PMs are all 100% fine. There's no emailing involved in those.

But we don't yet know if an email notification of a new PM is working or not. The mods are busy testing all this, but we very much welcome reports here on this thread of anything else that appears to be broken.

I just checked my Avalon's account section: General Settings > "Email Notification of New Private Messages:" the option "Don't receive Email Notification of new Private Messages" is checked. Obviously I won't receive any emails.
For me everything is working as expected, so far so good. :)

My last email received by Avalon was a friendship request on 17/NOV/2020 from staff [AT] projectavalon [DOT] net

Many Thanks.

Good news, everyone: Tommy, who's very very able, has fixed all the issues. We've tested them as best we can, and it all seems to be good now.

The Password Reset definitely works again. So does the Contact Form, and sending an email via another member's profile page. We'll be testing the registration and application process later today, as that takes a little more time. But it should all work fine now.

If there seem to be ANY remaining email-related bugs at all (such as various notifications of friend requests, PMs, or subscribed threads), please do report them here and we'll be on it straight away.

Breaka breaka…Bill. I was unable to send you a PM.

Bill Ryan has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space.

That's because of the sudden purple name

Yup, that's what one of the things I was going to point out http://paula.avalonlibrary.net/smilies/laugh-big-smile-teeth.gif
