Mystery lights seen over Glasgow sky 'like something from War of the Worlds'

Glaswegians have been stunned by mystery lights seen in the night sky described as 'like something from War of the Worlds'.

Steph Nixon shared his spectacular snap on Twitter after capturing the bizarre sight from his home in Croftfoot in the south of Glasgow.

As ever, several have suspected UFOs are descending on the city, while others are claiming the rapture is upon us.

However, it seems the colourful lights' appearance can more simply - although less sensationally - be attributed to meteorology.

A number of social media users responding to Steph's photo have confirmed the display as 'light pillars', formed by the reflection of light from small ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, apparently a common occurrence in various locations across the world.

So, thankfully something far less sinister than we may have expected given the way of the world right now, but nonetheless, certainly a very beautiful scene!

What unusual, engaging photos and they are displaying a phenomenon new to me.

So cool! A genuine breath of fresh air.

Thanks for posting them up.

There has been a lot of speculation that they may start project blue beam soon. There are many video's about strange apportions and lights in the sky recently. I cant post them now but will try latter on tonight. .

My avatar photo :) -- it's a Solar Pillar -- a type of light pillar caused by the sun just before dawn. This one happened in Calgary during winter -- it was -30C (my personal photo - taken about 20 years ago). The unique aspect of the one on my photo is the horizontal aspect -- I have never seen that before in any light pillar - the ice crystals must have been lined along two different axes.
