Point Reyes National Seashore in California has an incredible biodiversity and is one of the few places to observe tule elk, which were brought back from the edge of extinction.

Unfortunately, the elk are being threatened by the very agency that should be protecting them. In the past few years. elk have died after being fenced off from water sources during droughts. The National Park Service is now in the process of finalizing plans that would cull elk and prioritize private ranching on public land.

Private ranching has been destructive to the area. Point Reyes has one of the more polluted waters in the nation. Native plants have been replaced by intrusive species on ranchlands. And above all, there is the elk. There are now more cows in Point Reyes than tule elk in the entire world.

Take the time to find out more about the elk and write letters to the Park Service and California Coastal Commission asking them to revise their plans. The national seashore is public land that should be protected by all.
