This explain the English hate towards Russia...

How the English once planned to seize the Russian North

This turned out to be a detached event recovered in the library:

In the latter half of 1612, a dispatch was sent to London with a detailed account of events in Russia. The probable author of the document was Captain Thomas Chamberlain.

The English plans to take advantage of the ‘Time of Troubles’ to “subjugate” the Russian North were unknown until 1914. The Chamberlain plan was discovered in British archives by a Russian historian named Inna Lubimenko.

It never amounted to much of anything.

However, starting with the same King in the 1600s, there is British Israelism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Israelism):

Anglo-Israelism has also been attributed to King James VI and I, who believed he was the King of Israel.

The extent to which the British clergy became aware of the existence of the movement may be gauged by the comment which Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801–1890) made when he was asked why he had left the Church of England in 1845 in order to join the Roman Catholic Church. He said that there was a very real danger that the movement "would take over the Church of England."

Judged by the same Book (https://archive.gci.org/articles/anglo-israelism-and-the-united-states-britain-in-prophecy/):

It might be helpful to mention one example of the kind of teaching often used to support Anglo-Israelite views. In The United States and Britain in Prophecy, Ezekiel 21:27 is quoted to prove that God would overturn the throne of David three times, transferring it each time to a new location. The theory is that the first overturning transferred the throne from Jerusalem to Ireland, the second to Scotland, and the third, under King James, to England. Therefore the British monarch is an alleged descendant of King David.

Where people these days have a hardcore belief in Ezekiel 38 (https://davidjeremiah.blog/what-does-the-bible-say-about-modern-russia/):

Russia will invade Israel in the End Times.

I am thinking that throughout the 1700s there were some Fundamentalists and Pentecostals in England who due to the above simply hated Russia. Then Lord Palmerston more or less announced it as public policy around 1830, that everyone should go and hate them.

Here is the same idea from Lydia Lee (http://www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0259-94222017000300031), Theology Dept., U-S. Africa:

Reagan was far from alone in his belief of the Russian-Gog's invasion in Israel or the USA. Mein (2013:136) notes that the attempt to associate Gog with Russia had already begun in 19th-century Britain, as a result of the 'competing interests' between Britain and Russia in Central Asia. This Russophobia was compounded by an exegetical 'preference for the Septuagint version of 38:1', which treats the Hebrew שׁאר not as a common noun, that is 'head' or 'chief', but as the proper name 'Rhos' that was then connected with 'Rus' and Russia (Mein 2013:137). Boyer (1992:162) further contextualises Reagan's identification of Gog as Russia in 'the stream of apocalyptic teaching about Russia that had coursed through American popular religion for well over a century'.

For the Bills that appear in Congress now, I do not find anything that would require militancy, but there is another attempt at extortion in this little gem, H 535 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/535/text?s=2&r=13&q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22ukraine%22%5D%7D):

(1) IN GENERAL.—None of the funds authorized to be appropriated or otherwise made available to any Federal department or agency may be used to provide assistance for the central government of a country that the Secretary of State determines and reports to the appropriate congressional committees—

if you believe the new Russian territories are Russia.

The Human Rights Situation in Ukraine
Report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation

Foreword

This report is a follow-up on the Ministry's efforts to bring the international community’s attention to the difficult human rights situation in Ukraine, which has significantly deteriorated over the past year. This is confirmed by the many cases on record of grave human rights violations in all spheres of public life, as well as the unwillingness to take action to improve the situation on the part of those who call themselves the country's leaders.

At the same time, it is definitely worth mentioning that the large number of problems in Ukraine have been observed by numerous international human rights monitoring mechanisms, as well as international and Ukrainian non-governmental human rights organisations. All of them have noted the systemic nature of human rights violations in Ukraine and noted with concern that the authorities should pay close attention to the identified problems and deploy significant efforts to resolve them.

However, the events confirm the Ukrainian leadership’s inability to even go through the motions and attempt to address serious human rights violations. Such actions of the Kiev regime once again illustrate its lack of independence. In fact, Kiev is a neo-Nazi regime that is acting upon the instructions of external sponsors to create an anti-Russia project from its own country. The sole purpose of this entity is to serve as a source of tension in the immediate vicinity of Russia’s borders despite destroying its own statehood in the process. It is precisely because of the obsequious readiness of the current Ukrainian government to deny everything that bounds it to Russia and, to the detriment of the interests of their people, to destroy the history and memory of the real rather than fictional past of their country, that the overseas sponsors turn a blind eye to its neo-Nazi nature and nudge it to follow the path of self-destruction.

--------

This can also be read via their site here (https://mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/humanitarian_cooperation/1448658/)

--------

Extracted from page/s 3 and 4, none of which comes as any surprise to forum members or similarly educated viewers out there:

A number of researchers have rightly noted that the Kiev regime underwent a
political mutation in 2022. The environment that it created in the wake of the
martial law allowed it to build an authoritarian rule in that country which can be
described as an absolute monopoly on power, out-of-court reprisals, tough
censorship, liquidation of almost all independent media and the destruction of
political opposition, total state propaganda, an active search for traitors and
fictional Russian spies and saboteurs. Having adopted the ideology and practices of
the Ukrainian national radicals, the current regime has, in fact, degenerated into a
neo-Nazi dictatorship.

This kind of a regime needs a state of war and the widespread use of reprisals as
the only and, at the same time, the surest way to preserve its domination. It will
exist as long as a high degree of escalation in society is maintained, armed
confrontation with an external enemy continues, and most importantly, widespread
Western assistance, primarily military, is provided. Acting along the lines of this
logic, such a regime will exist only as long as it maintains this degree of escalation
in society and is at war with an external enemy. The end of the war for such a
regime means the end of its existence.

Overall, the situation with promoting and protecting human rights in Ukraine has
become critical. The right to freedom and personal inviolability is regularly
infringed upon in that country. There are numerous facts of illegal arrests and
subsequent detention, torture, intimidation, and inhuman and cruel treatment that
are aimed, among other things, at forcing the people in custody to confess their
guilt.

The persecution of political opponents, independent journalists and media
companies as well as members of public organisations that are objectionable to the
authorities, which, as a rule, comes amid claims about the importance of combating
“Russian aggression” and “separatism”, has acquired unprecedented proportions.
To this end, the Kiev authorities actively engage members of radical nationalist
organisations who often break the law, but always go unpunished.

The rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs), the Russian-speaking people and
representatives of ethnic minorities, of whom there are many among the IDPs,
have been restricted. Kiev’s campaign against the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox
Church has reached a new level in terms of cynicism and hypocrisy. It has now
taken the form of a total ban on the UOC, including Zelenskiy regime’s decision to
evict its clergy from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.

The problem of corruption, which is deeply rooted in the Ukrainian state, remains
unresolved. The measures declared by the Kiev authorities to combat it, including
the creation of relevant specialised entities, turn out ineffective in practice. Juan
Pablo Bohoslavsky, an independent expert from the UN Human Rights Council on
foreign debt and human rights, pointed out the state of affairs in this sphere at the
end of his official visit to Ukraine in May 2018.1 The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights also noted the scale of corruption in April 2014 2 and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women noted it in February 2017. According to CEDAW experts, corruption, as well as rising unemployment, declining standards of living and the ongoing crisis create favourable conditions for widespread human trafficking.3

Ukrainian commander laments state of army – El Pais 24 Apr, 2023

Kiev needs up to six times more troops and firepower than Russia for its counteroffensive to succeed, General Sergey Melnik says

Kiev needs more troops, ammunition and equipment to continue its military conflict with Moscow, Ukrainian Brigadier General Sergey Melnik told Spain’s El Pais in an interview published on Monday. Ukraine has already lost most of its professional soldiers as the conflict drags on, he admitted.

“The problem is that we have a lack of people and equipment,” said the general, who commands troops near the Russian border in Kharkov Region. “Professional soldiers… are already exhausted, injured or recovering. Or… dead,” he added.

Melnik said Kiev is now relying on “people without military experience,” who first need to be trained and have an “adequate [level of] preparation to face the enemy.” According to El Pais, the general also “stressed several times during the interview” that Ukraine needs more air-defense systems, citing the threat posed by Russian aircraft.

He also admitted that Kiev’s forces would need to gain massive superiority in manpower and firepower if they are to have any hope of succeeding with a planned counteroffensive. Ukraine will need “four to six times” as many troops as Moscow has fielded in its ongoing military campaign if it is to break through the defenses built by the Russian forces in their current positions, he told El Pais.

Poland seizes Russian embassy and trade mission funds 26 Apr, 2023

Moscow’s envoy has called the move a “flagrant violation” of the Vienna Convention

https://mf.b37mrtl.ru/files/2023.04/thumbnail/6449967b203027748154c009.jpg

All the money in the accounts of the Russian embassy and trade office in Warsaw has been seized by the Polish prosecutor’s office, Ambassador Sergey Andreyev revealed on Wednesday.

“We received a notification from the prosecutor’s office that the funds from the Santander Bank accounts of the embassy and the trade representation were transferred to the accounts of the prosecutor’s office,” Andreyev told RIA Novosti.

Santander Bank then informed the embassy that it had “ceased cooperation” with the Russian government and closed the accounts, Andreyev added. There were “significant amounts” of both US dollars and Polish zlotys in both accounts, according to the diplomat.

Andreyev called the incident “a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” the 1961 treaty governing the rights and responsibilities of diplomats.

The Polish authorities had previously frozen the embassy account, citing suspicions that it might be involved in “money laundering or terrorism.” When this prevented the embassy from paying the lease on a recreational facility near Warsaw, the Polish authorities terminated the lease and seized the property in November 2022.

Another property, a residence on 100 Sobieski Street, was seized last spring. Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski said at the time it should be handed to refugees from Ukraine. The Polish foreign ministry said the building was “illegally owned” by the embassy as it was not being used for diplomatic or consular purposes. The embassy’s explanation, that the building was unfit for occupancy as it needed repairs, was ignored.

Poland has also sought to confiscate the embassy-operated school in Warsaw, citing the same pretext. The Russian Foreign Ministry has protested both seizures as a flagrant violation of international law.

Many EU and NATO countries have expelled dozens of Russian diplomats after the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022, but most did not go so far as to sever relations with Moscow. The US and its allies have insisted they are not actually involved in the conflict, even while they sent Kiev over $100 billion worth of weapons and financial aid.

Poland looking for conflict 'with all its neighbors' – Russia's top spy 26 Apr, 2023

Warsaw is drilling for war with NATO-ally Germany, Sergey Naryshkin has claimed :loco:

Warsaw is not just looking at taking a bite out of Ukraine, but preparing for a hypothetical conflict with fellow NATO member Germany, according to the head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergey Naryshkin.

Naryshkin pointed to a military exercise conducted at the end of March near the city of Szczecin, on the German-Polish border. The drills, code-named ‘Daglezja’ (Douglas fir), involved three Polish brigades dealing with “military aggression” from an unnamed neighbor to the west.

Polish troops practiced destroying bridges, erecting barricades and mining the roads along the border with Germany, the SVR said.

This kind of military planning reflects Warsaw’s growing “anti-German sentiments and fears about possible revanchist claims of Berlin,” according to the Russian intelligence head. The “suspicion” towards the NATO ally to the west is parallel to Poland’s ongoing territorial aspirations towards its former “eastern borderlands,” now part of Ukraine.

“Today’s Poland is turning into what it was in the times of Jozef Pilsudski, when Warsaw was in conflict with all its neighbors and longed for territorial expansion,” Naryshkin said in a statement. “Such was the Poland that [British PM] Winston Churchill aptly called ‘the hyena of Europe’ on the eve of the Second World War.”

Naryshkin had previously suggested that Warsaw harbored designs on Ukrainian territory, which Poland denied, accusing the Russian official of waging information warfare.

Although both countries are members of the US-led NATO, last October Warsaw demanded more than €1.3 trillion in WWII reparations from Berlin, and appealed to the UN for help in January, after Germany refused.

Visiting the US earlier this month, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki declared that Warsaw wanted to build “the strongest army in Europe” and offered to serve as a hub for the expanded US military presence on the continent.

Ukraine Peace Talks - A Grown Up Is Taking Charge

The U.S. is unwilling to yet give up in its proxy war with Russia in Ukraine. Russia can not stop the war without securing its legitimate interest to keep NATO and/or the U.S. out of its neighbor state. A loss of the war would create an existential danger for Russia.

With the two major powers engaged in a war a third party is needed to solve the conflict.

In the spring of last year Turkey and Israel successfully helped to find a peace agreement. A good solution was found and Russia as well as Ukraine agreed to it. But the U.S. needed the war to continue. It sent the British prime minister Boris Johnson to Kiev to sabotage the deal. The Ukrainian president was told that the country would lose all 'western' support should it sign an agreement with Russia.

As the somewhat neutral middle powers were unable to push any agreement through it became obvious that a third party with more heft was needed to seal a deal.

The time of moving towards a deal also needed to be right. On February 24, exactly a year after the war had started, China announced its Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis. This was not a peace plan but a lay out of things that will need to be understood and done to come to a sustainable solution of the crisis.

A months later China took the next step that will be needed in the process. It introduced a high ranking diplomat who will hold the preliminary talks in Ukraine and Russia to find the potential ways to proceed. The announcement was made after a phone call between the presidents Xi and Zelensky:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he held a “long and meaningful call” with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, a long-anticipated first contact between the leaders since Russia’s invasion 14 months ago.
Xi appealed for negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv to begin, according to a Chinese government readout of the call, which Beijing said Zelenskyy requested.

Xi pledged to send a "special representative" to Ukraine for talks about a "political settlement" — warning that "there is no winner in a nuclear war."

China hopes to become a neutral peace broker in the conflict, although the U.S. and others have questioned its impartiality given a "no limits" partnership in which it has lent Moscow rhetorical and financial support.

I am not aware of any 'financial support' by China to Russia as NBC News is claiming here. Even U.S. intelligence says that Russia does not need more money to continue the war:

U.S. intelligence holds that Russia will be able to fund the war in Ukraine for at least another year, even under the heavy and increasing weight of unprecedented sanctions, according to leaked U.S. military documents.
China' readout on the call alludes to the previous proposal and offers to build on it:

With rational thinking and voices now on the rise, it is important to seize the opportunity and build up favorable conditions for the political settlement of the crisis. It is hoped that all parties would seriously reflect on the Ukraine crisis and jointly explore ways to bring lasting peace and security to Europe through dialogue. China will continue to facilitate talks for peace and make its efforts for early ceasefire and restoration of peace. China will send the Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs to Ukraine and other countries to have in-depth communication with all parties on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis. China has sent multiple batches of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and will keep providing help to the best of its ability.
The Chinese special representative for Eurasian affairs is Lu Hui, a very senior diplomat.

He has held several positions in China's embassies in Moscow and Astana as well as within China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

In 2008-2009 Mr. Liu Hui served as a deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC.
From August 2009 to August 2019 he served as an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Russian Federation.

Ukraine's readout of the call does not mention the envoy. The U.S. response to the announcement of an envoy was designed to put China's efforts into doubt:

John Kirby, the National Security Council's coordinator for strategic communications, said the U.S. welcomed the call as a "good thing."
"We’ve been saying for quite some time that we believe it’s important for President Xi and PRC officials to avail themselves of the Ukrainian perspective on this illegal and unprovoked invasion by Russia," Kirby told reporters, referring to China by the initials for its formal name, the People's Republic of China.

Earlier, Kirby, told NBC News, "We will let these two leaders speak to the details of their conversation."

A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it was "way too soon after just getting word of this conversation to speculate about" whether the call should foster optimism about China's peace plan.

"Thus far, China has not shown itself to be unbiased when it comes to supporting Russia," the official said.

I have no doubt that Li Hui will do his best to achieve some progress in talks with Ukraine and Russia. His most difficult task is to bring the U.S. on board of any potential solution.

But with more doubts coming up over Kiev's ability to successfully launch the announced counteroffensive being voiced every day the mood in Washington may well be changing.

Putin JUST SHUTDOWN All Oil To The US, Collapsing The US Economy! with Clayton Morris:

_wHDtGZrooU
Clayton Morris joins us to discuss Putin shutting down all oil to the US with oil sanctions collapsing the US economy in this breaking news update.

It seems Russia has been able to bypass sanctions from United States, taking some of its market share with the help of Brazil, and bypass the European Union with the assistance of Iraq, which will all be revealed in today's video. Russian diesel exports saw their highest volume month on record in March, despite more restrictions on Moscow's energy supplies, according to commodities analytics firm Kieppler. Since Vladimir Putin launched his war on Ukraine, the US, Europe, and other Western nations have imposed a range of sanctions on Russia. In February, the European Union banned imports of refined Russian fuels, including diesel, after banning seaborne crude oil imports in December. Still, Russia's oil and diesel export volumes remain elevated amid steep discounts.

In fact, crude oil shipments are back above pre-war levels thanks to China and India, and Russian diesel exports hit a record 27 million barrels a day in March, Kieppler data shows.

But whereas crude exports have largely consolidated into a small number of large buyers, the opposite has happened for Russian diesel exports, Kieppler lead oil analyst Matt Smith said. Trade flows for diesel have sprung up into many North African countries, while other key exporters such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia have increasingly imported Russian diesel in recent months given advantageous pricing, he said. Some nations, like India and China, have been ramping up imports of Russian supplies only to resell them. Overall, Russian diesel is displacing traditional suppliers as trade flows change to make up for the loss of exports to the European market, he added.

It's a game of musical chairs and one we've seen play out already with other Russian products such as fuel oil, the analyst said. Brazil, for example, imported effectively zero Russian diesel all the way up to the end of 2022, with most of its supplies coming from the US and other sellers, according to Kieppler data. The US sent roughly 150,000 barrels a day of diesel to Brazil in December 2022, but that has dropped by about 50% in April. Brazil's diesel imports from Russia, meanwhile, surged to almost 100,000 barrels a day this month, even though the US is a much closer trade partner than Russia, suggesting Brazil is able to get cheaper supplies despite the longer distance. Smith said Kieppler isn't privy to the pricing involved, but the data illustrate that the economics work for both Russia and Brazil. If it was just the odd cargo, it could be suggested that Brazil is the destination of last resort when Russia is unable to sell its diesel to anyone else, but the volumes delivered in the last three months suggest something more regular and more of a trend.

It really does appear that Russian diesel is muscling in on US market share in Brazil. Europe loses out on Russian crude. Europe's oil refiners, already making do without long-standing shipments of Russian crude, are now struggling with the loss of similar supplies from northern Iraq and a shock reduction in output by several of the world's top producer nations. Flows from Russia, formerly the European Union's top supplier, have plummeted by more than a million barrels a day since the country's invasion of Ukraine in February of last year, amid ever-tightening sanctions. Those reductions are now starting to bite harder because Iraq has halted shipments that reach Europe via a Turkish port in the Mediterranean Sea.

Russia and Iran are building a new transcontinental railway trade route stretching from the eastern edge of Europe to the Indian Ocean, a 3,000-kilometer passage that's beyond the reach of any foreign intervention. And for the first time ever, fuel-by-rail exports have been launched to Iran after the West banned seaborne imports of fuels from Russia over Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

The two countries are spending billions of dollars to speed up the delivery of cargo along rivers and railways linked by the Caspian Sea. Ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg show dozens of Russian and Iranian vessels, including some that are subject to sanctions, already plying the route. It's an example of how great power competition is rapidly reshaping trade networks in a world economy that looks set to fragment into rival blocs. Russia and Iran, under tremendous pressure from sanctions, are turning toward each other, and they're both looking eastward, too. The goal is to shield commercial links from Western interference and build new ones with the giant and fast-growing economies of Asia.

This is about establishing sanctions-proof supply chains all the way through. The emerging trade corridor would allow Russia and Iran to shave thousands of kilometers off existing routes. At its northern end is the Sea of Azov, which is bracketed by the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine's southeastern coast, including the Russian-occupied port of Mariupol and the mouth of the River Don. Earlier this month, listing his country's gains from the war in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin said the Sea of Azov has become an inland sea for Russia. From there, river, sea, and rail networks extend to Iranian hubs on the Caspian Sea and ultimately the Indian Ocean.

Putin has flagged the importance of that end of the corridor as well. At an economic forum in September, he underlined the need to develop the ship, rail, and road infrastructure along the route That will provide Russian companies with new opportunities to enter the markets of Iran, India, the Middle East, and Africa, and will facilitate supplies from these countries in return. Shagina estimates Russia and Iran are investing as much as $25 billion in the inland trade corridor, helping to facilitate the flow of goods the West wants to stop. The two countries are playing a cat-and-mouse game, she says.

They will explore all loopholes to transport banned products and weapons. That alarms the U. S. and its allies as they seek to block transfers of Iranian drones and other military supplies they say are aiding the Kremlin's war in Ukraine. Here's what Biden had to say about this.

Ukraine attempted to assassinate Russia's Putin via drone - report

The attack was supposed to be carried out during a visit by Putin outside of the Russian capital, but the drone crashed before reaching him.

The Ukrainian Secret Service attempted to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin with a drone, but the attack failed when the drone crashed before reaching him, German newspaper Bild reported on Thursday.

The report cites a recent tweet by the Chief Editor of the Ukrainian website Khvilya, Yuriy Romanenko, who reportedly has ties to Ukrainian intelligence sources.

According to Romanenko, Ukraine used a drone of the UJ-22 type, which has a range of up to 800 km and was equipped with 17 kg of explosives. The drone managed to fly over the border and pass by Russia's air defense systems.

Putin's visit outside the capital

The drone was meant to explode and kill Putin during a visit to the Rudnevo industrial park near the capital of Moscow.

"Last week, our intelligence officers received information about Putin's trip to the industrial park in Rudnevo. I even managed to get a map of the trip around the park. This information was indirectly confirmed by Putin's personal correspondent Zarubin in his telegram," Romanenko wrote. "Accordingly, we launched a kamikaze drone, which flew through all the air defenses of the Russian Federation, and fell not far from the industrial park."

According to Bild, private Russian media confirmed a drone crash in a village east of Moscow, close to the Rudnevo industrial park.

Alleged pictures of the drone show explosive charges of the M112 type, which is also used by the US and Canadian military.

There was no comment from the Russian side, but passersby uploaded videos to Twitter on Sunday, which might show possible preparations for a visit by Putin.

Ukraine in the past repeatedly attempted to strike targets in Russian territory, frequently using drones.

In February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin will eventually be killed by a member of his inner circle.

This is quite graphic, but there's no action here, and no close up detail. It's only disturbing in what it implies. :flower:

A Russian drone camera scans the Ukrainian trenches from a distant height of maybe 500 feet. But one can easily see what are obviously many dozens, maybe hundreds, of bodies that are just lying there not moving. There's simply no-one left alive.

Tucker Carlson on Ukraine War - April 24, 2023:

sqbBORLtJSg
Last year, Tucker Carlson joined Freddy Gray on SpectatorTV. As he leaves Fox, we're reposting the discussion, which covered everything from the war in Ukraine to why Tucker is a self-confessed extremist about drywall.

Tucker Carlson joins Freddy Gray on SpectatorTV February 1st, 2022 in a conversation that covers everything from Vladimir Putin's intentions in Eastern Europe to Tucker's dislike for overhead lighting.

Asked why he's against an American intervention in Ukraine, Tucker says: 'We’re already funding a proxy war. So why would we be doing that? I mean, is there a vital American interest that serves?

'Perhaps there is. I haven't heard anyone explain it.

'And they go immediately to "you're working for Vladimir Putin" or something. I have limited interest in Vladimir Putin. I've never been to Russia. I don't speak Russian! Much less Ukrainian.'

On China, Tucker says: 'China is a problem that is very hard for the United States to solve. It's not clear how we do solve that problem.

'By problem, I mean, sort of giving hegemony over the world to a country that doesn't believe anything, really, that we believe.

'It would be a massive change in the way the world operates, in the way that we in the United States live, in the way that you in Great Britain live.'

Kremlin reacts to ‘Putin drone assassination’ claim

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman has dismissed claims that Ukraine had attempted to assassinate the head of state using a suicide drone. Dmitry Peskov dismissed the allegations as “yellow fabrications.”

“No, we are not familiar with these reports,” Peskov told reporters. “There are many such ‘yellow fabrications’ these days. There’s no reason to pay them any mind.”

On Wednesday, German tabloid Bild published a story titled ‘17 kilos of explosives intended to kill Putin’, claiming that a Ukrainian drone that crashed near Moscow on Sunday had targeted the president, and that the Russian authorities were trying to cover it up.

Bild quoted Ukrainian activist Yuri Romanenko, who claimed that Ukrainian intelligence had sent the drone to target Putin during his visit to the Rudnevo industrial park outside Moscow. The UAV reportedly passed through Russian air defenses undetected and crashed “not far” from the target location. The German outlet described Romanenko as someone with close ties to Kiev’s intelligence services.

The crash of the UJ-22 on Sunday was widely reported in Russian media, however. The UAV was found in the Bogorodsky district, about 30km from Moscow’s eastern outskirts and 20km from Rudnevo. It had 30 blocks of C4 explosive, around 17 kilograms, on board. Three more drones, all of the smaller quadcopter variety, were discovered near the Russian capital on Monday.

The same day, Ukrainian propaganda service Euromaidan PR tweeted a video purporting to show footage of Moscow taken by Ukrainian drones, claiming responsibility for the quadcopters and leaving a threatening message: “We are closer than you think.”

The platform’s Community Notes quickly fact-checked the claim, however, revealing that the drone footage actually came from an old YouTube video.

Putin’s planned visit to Rudnevo at some point this week was mentioned by Russian media on Sunday. The president arrived at the industrial park on Thursday, spending over an hour in a meeting with officials and representatives of Russia’s aerospace industry. Putin called drone aviation a field of “critical importance” for economic sovereignty, in which Russia should strive to not merely keep pace with the competition, but be “a step ahead.” He also discussed the importance of mass producing UAVs.

Scott Ritter: 'Ukraine Victory Resolution' Act - a Delusional Suicide Pact

After the presentation of the resolution, it must then be approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee and then put to a vote in Congress, both at the House of Representatives and the Senate level, before becoming law.

While the "Ukraine Victory Resolution" faces an uncertain future in a Congress where enthusiasm for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is waning, one should not count out the potential for the resolution becoming law, especially given the track record of its sponsors. Wilson, Cohen and McCaul last collaborated on the "Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act", which was signed into law on May 9, 2022, by President Joe Biden. That law enhanced Biden’s authority to simplify bureaucratic barriers with regards to military equipment for Ukraine or other Eastern European countries affected by the Russian Special Military Operation in Ukraine.
Since the start of Russia's Special Military Operation, the Helsinki Commission has worked closely with the Ukrainian government to craft legislation that supports Ukrainian goals and objectives when it comes to its conflict with Russia.

To call the Helsinki Commission a de facto adjunct of the Ukrainian government would not be an exaggeration. Indeed, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, was the person chosen to make the official announcement regarding the presentation of the "Ukraine Victory Resolution" to the House of Representatives.

The text of the draft resolution "affirms that it is the policy of the United States to see Ukraine victorious against the invasion and restored to its internationally recognized 1991 borders."

Wilson and Cohen both have stated that the territorial integrity of Ukraine must be preserved, meaning that the conflict in Ukraine could not be ended until the territories of Kherson, Zaporozhye, Donetsk, Lugansk, and Crimea are returned to Ukrainian sovereignty.
While the resolution introduced by Wilson and Cohen accurately reflects both current US policy objectives and Ukrainian government desires, it ignores two critical realities. First, it is Russia that is winning the conflict, not Ukraine, and as such any termination of the current conflict will reflect this hard truth.

Moreover, to tie both the US and Ukraine to unrealistic expectations creates obstacles to any possible negotiated end to the conflict, meaning that the conflict will drag on to its inevitable conclusion—a strategic Russian victory—in a manner which will only increase the human, material, and financial cost to Ukraine.
Indeed, as senior Russian officials such as former President Dmitri Medvedev have noted, if the crisis does not reach a negotiated end, Ukraine itself may cease to exist as a sovereign entity. The irony of a piece of US legislation purporting to defend Ukrainian sovereignty serving as the foundation of the death of Ukraine as a nation seems to have escaped the sponsors of the resolution.

But the resolution also lays the groundwork for the possibility—indeed, if the resolution accomplished its goal, probability—of a general nuclear war between the United States and Russia. Former Russian President Medvedev recently noted that, according to Russian policy regarding the use of nuclear weapons, such weapons "can be used in case of aggression against Russia with the use of other types of weapons that threaten the very existence of the state. This is, in essence, the use of nuclear weapons in response to such actions."
Any effort by Ukraine to recover its former territories which have been absorbed by Russia would, by definition, constitute a threat against the "very existence of the Russian State," to quote Medvedev. "If you have a weapon in your hands," Medvedev declared recently, referring to nuclear weapons, "and I, as a former president, know what it is, you must be prepared that your hand will not tremble in a certain situation to use it, no matter how monstrous and cruel it sounds."

"Therefore, all these stories that 'the Russians will never do it,' or vice versa, 'the Russians keep scaring us with the use of nuclear weapons,' are not worth a penny," Medvedev said.

This is something Russia's potential adversaries, including Congressmen Wilson, Cohen, and McCaul—and indeed every member of Congress who will be called upon to vote in support of the "Ukraine Victory Resolution" — should keep first and foremost in their mind.

A vote for the resolution is a vote for nuclear war with Russia. The resolution is a literal suicide pact with Ukraine. Hopefully the American people will wake up to this reality before it is too late, and let their representatives know that they chose life over death.

Ukraine has lost its NATO-driven conflict with Russia. There is no need for the entire world to die as a result.

Global Military Spending Tops Record $2.2 trillion, Harley Schlanger Tony Gosling:

ZBury3HHc8U
Tonight we are putting the Spotlight on the continuous rise in global military expenditure in recent years. The 3.7% increase in global military spending in 2022 alone reached an all-time high of $2.24 trillion, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. By any standard this could mean nothing but an "increasingly insecure world." In this edition, we will discuss the reasons behind this sharp increase and its ramifications.

World military spending reaches all-time high of $2.24 trillion

Surge in spending reflects Russia-Ukraine war and ‘increasingly insecure world’, according to leading think tank. Published On 24 Apr 2023

World military spending reached an all-time high of $2.24 trillion in 2022, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine fuelled a sharp jump in military spending across Europe, according to a leading defence think tank.

Global spending rose for the eighth consecutive year, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said on Monday in its annual report on global military expenditure.

There was a 13 percent rise in Europe, the steepest in at least 30 years.

SIPRI said most of that was linked to Russia and Ukraine, but other countries also stepped up military spending in response to perceived Russian threats.

“The continuous rise in global military expenditure in recent years is a sign that we are living in an increasingly insecure world,” Nan Tian, senior researcher with SIPRI’s Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme. “States are bolstering military strength in response to a deteriorating security environment, which they do not foresee improving in the near future.”

Moscow invaded and seized Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014, and backed separatist rebels in the country’s east before it began its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The moves have spread alarm among other countries that neighbour Russia or were once part of the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence, with Finland’s spending up 36 percent and Lithuania’s military spending up by 27 percent, according to SIPRI.

In April, Finland, whose border with Russia stretches some 1,340km (833 miles), became the 31st member of NATO. Sweden, which has avoided military alliances for more than 200 years, also wants to join.

“While the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 certainly affected military spending decisions in 2022, concerns about Russian aggression have been building for much longer,” said Lorenzo Scarazzato, researcher with SIPRI’s Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme. “Many former Eastern bloc states have more than doubled their military spending since 2014, the year when Russia annexed Crimea.”

The think tank said military spending in Ukraine surged more than six times to $44bn in 2022, the highest single-year increase in a country’s military expenditure ever recorded in SIPRI data.

As a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), military spending surged to 34 percent in 2022, compared with 3.2 percent the year before.

Russian military spending grew by an estimated 9.2 per cent in 2022, to about $86.4bn, according to SIPRI. That was equivalent to 4.1 per cent of Russia’s 2022 GDP, up from 3.7 percent in 2021.

The United States remained the world’s largest military spender — up 0.7 percent to $877bn in 2022 — which was 39 percent of total global military spending. The increase was largely driven by “the unprecedented level of financial military aid it provided to Ukraine,” SIPRI’s Nan Tian said.

US financial military aid to Ukraine totalled $19.9bn in 2022, according to the think tank.

China remained the world’s second-largest military spender, allocating an estimated $292bn in 2022. This was 4.2 percent more than in 2021 and represents the 28th consecutive annual increase.

Meanwhile, Japan spent $46bn on the military in 2022, a rise of 5.9 percent from the previous year. SIPRI said it was the highest level of Japanese military spending since 1960.

Japan and China led military spending in Asia and Oceania, which amounted to $575bn. SIPRI said military expenditure in the region had been rising since at least 1989.

Tensions in East Asia have risen over the self-ruled island of Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory. China also lays claim to almost all of the South China Sea, a major maritime trading route, parts of which are also claimed by countries including the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Japan and China are also embroiled in a dispute over the Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands, which lie northeast of Taiwan.

Tokyo also has a long-running dispute with Moscow over the Northern Territories, which lie northeast of Hokkaido and were seized by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II. Russia calls them the Kuril Islands.

The Dneipr river is wide and with considerable flow (especially since it's been raining so hard), and it's very hard even with experience to control a kayak crossing the flow of a big river if it's heavily laden, e.g. with military hardware.

If they can cross the river undetected at night and without mishap, they'll be really really lucky. Do please post any updates on the outcome of this dangerous stunt if you happen to catch them. :)

Putin warns NATO "We haven't even started yet." | Redacted with Clayton Morris

Ukraine launched massive attacks in the Donbass region this weekend. The mainstream media doesn't seem to care. Meanwhile Ukraine has changed its goals from "survival" to "victory." What does victory mean? More money and weapons from the west. President Putin says that if Ukraine wants to escalate on the battlefield, Russia is ready. Peace talks now.

Ukraine looking to grab more of Russia’s oil revenues – Kommersant

Kiev is preparing to significantly increase tariffs for transporting Russian crude oil to the EU through its territory via the Druzhba pipeline, business daily Kommersant reported on Friday.

According to the report from the Russian outlet, which cites the consultancy Argus and market sources, Ukrainian pipeline operator Ukrtransnafta has applied for a two-step increase in transit prices, by 25% from the current $14.90 per ton to $18.70 on June 1, and by an additional 23.5% to $23 on August 1.

Transneft, Russia’s state pipeline transport company, confirmed to Kommersant having received notification from Ukrtransnafta of the tariff hike but said that it was not conducting negotiations with Kiev on the matter.

According to Kommersant’s sources, Ukraine is currently negotiating the hike directly with buyers in Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. However, any arrangements with them will have to be formalized with the Russian Energy Ministry and Transneft, experts say. The latter traditionally pays in advance for the transit of Russian oil through Ukrainian territory. The transit cost is included in the price of oil deliveries, and Russian oil companies, having received payment from buyers, reimburse Transneft for the transit.

The planned hike in transit costs will be the second this year, after Kiev raised the tariff by €2.10 per ton (18.3%) on January 1. Prior to that, the tariff was hiked twice last year.

Experts warn that overly frequent tariff hikes may bring oil transport via Druzhba to a halt, as buyers, despite not having many alternatives to Russian oil, may find the costs too high. According to Igor Yushkov, a professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, this scenario would hurt Ukraine, which relies on the transit fees.

Druzhba carries crude some 4,000km from Russia to refineries in the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Supplies via the route were not targeted by the EU embargo on Russian crude that was introduced late last year.

NY Times & WashPo Editors CONFRONTED Over Ukraine War Lies!

-Upux1XBCbg
Antiwar activist Jose Vega is well on his way to becoming a legendary disruptor of the war machine. His latest target: an event at Columbia Journalism School featuring some of the news media’s top editors talking about anything BUT the Nord Stream pipeline bombing and the ongoing perilous dance with World War III.

Guest host Aaron Maté and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger talk to special guest Jimmy Dore about the sad state of journalism in America and why disruptors like Vega are so important to holding the powerful accountable.

Jose Vega stood up and asked editors at the NYTimes, Washington Post, and others why are they shilling for the deep state military industrial complex. Before being wrestled to the ground Vega asked why these "papers of record" ignored the biggest story of the last 100 years, the bombing of the Nord Stream pipeline by President Biden. Redacted Correspondent Dan Cohen joins us to look deeper into the cozy relationship between the corporate media and the federal government.

US corporations cash in on Ukraine’s oil and gas

As the war in Ukraine drags on, the government is selling off state assets in a big privatization spree.

US fossil fuel corporations like ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Halliburton are participating in discussions to take over the Eastern European nation’s oil and gas industry, as Kiev pushes to increase production to replace Russian energy exports.

This comes soon after Ukraine’s Western-backed leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, sent a friendly video message to a US corporate lobby group, thanking companies like BlackRock, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and Starlink, and promising “big business” for others.

In September, Zelensky also symbolically opened the New York Stock Exchange, announcing that his country is “open for business”, offering more than $400 billion in “public-private partnerships, privatization, and private ventures” for US companies.

The Ukrainian government has used the war as an excuse to ram through some of the most aggressive anti-worker laws on Earth.

The director of the Kiev-based workers’ rights NGO Labor Initiatives warned of a “full-scale attack on Ukraine’s labour rights”, writing in a German government-funded journal that the “war cannot be used to justify stripping workers of their rights”.

In an attempt to bring an end to this war, China has taken the lead in advocating peace talks. Brazil’s President Lula da Silva has backed Beijing’s efforts.

The West, on the other hand, has vociferously opposed all attempts at diplomatic negotiations and instead pushed to escalate the NATO proxy war on Russia, sending fighter jets and tanks to Kiev.

Ukrainian officials, meanwhile, are treating their country as a for-profit company, frequently travelling to the United States in search of lucrative business opportunities.

Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz woos US corporations, like Iraq War profiteer Halliburton

The CEO of Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz, Oleksiy Chernyshov, flew to Washington, DC this April to meet with US political and corporate officials.

The Financial Times reported that Chernyshov sat down with representatives from ExxonMobil and Halliburton, following a similar meeting with Chevron in January.

“The negotiations with big US fossil fuel players are part of a strategic push to increase natural gas production that Ukrainian officials believe could help replace Russian supply to Europe in the years ahead”, the newspaper wrote.

Halliburton is notorious for its involvement in corruption schemes, involving fat government contracts. In 2017, it was fined $29.2 million by the US Securities and Exchange Commission for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act with highly profitable oilfield services contracts in Angola.

Halliburton is also the world’s biggest provider of fracking services, or hydraulic fracturing, a controversial form of gas extraction that is so environmentally destructive it was banned in the United Kingdom.

Responding to the Financial Times report, economist Yanis Varoufakis, who previously served as Greece’s minister of finance, tweeted: “And there you have it. EXXON, HALLIBURTON & CHEVRON, after Iraq, are now taking over the Ukrainian oil and gas fields. Planning to introduce large scale fracking – a clear and present threat to poison U’s agriculture”.

Chernyshov, the CEO of Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz, told the newspaper, “We want them [Halliburton] to expand [their presence] dramatically. We want them there seriously — boots on the ground”.

“We will welcome them”, he added. “We can do joint production on gas together, PSA agreement — production sharing agreement — they can have a licence and produce by themselves, we will welcome it”.

In November, the president of Halliburton in the eastern hemisphere, Joe Rainey, travelled to Ukraine to meet with Chernyshov.

Naftogaz published a press release on its website boasting that it “is strengthening its strategic cooperation with American’s Halliburton, one of the world’s largest oilfield services providers, to unlock the new potential of Ukraine’s fields”.

“Your support and visit to Kyiv is a powerful signal for the entire market and the world”, Chernyshov said. “I am grateful to the US government, the American people and you personally for your comprehensive support of Ukraine. We really appreciate it. Our cooperation is extremely important and we are doing our best to improve and expand it”.

Halliburton was a household name in the United States in the 2000s, and was practically synonymous with corruption.

Vice President Dick Cheney, who served under former President George W. Bush, had worked for years as chairman and CEO of Halliburton.

Cheney, a hardline neoconservative, was a key architect of the illegal US invasion of Iraq in 2003. That same year, Halliburton was given what NPR described as a “‘sweetheart’ deal in Iraq”.

NPR wrote:

Oil services company Halliburton has come under intense scrutiny over its multi-billion-dollar contracts with the U.S. military in Iraq. Congressional critics want to know if the company is engaging in gold-plating contracts — inflating costs and pocketing the difference. Other critics charge that Halliburton has seemingly become another branch of the U.S. military, while the company’s former chief executive officer, Dick Cheney, is now the vice president.

In the first of a three-part series looking at the complex relationship between the defense contractor and the federal government, NPR’s John Burnett examines the scope of contracts in Iraq held by Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown & Root, better known as KBR.

America’s war on terrorism has created a windfall for KBR. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the company has constructed base camps at more than 60 locations throughout the Middle East and South Asia. Under its deal with the Pentagon — known as a “Logcap” contract — KBR is the go-to company to provide troops in Iraq with everything from portable toilets to Internet cafes.

A decade later, the International Business Times reported that Halliburton subsidiary KBR had received more Iraq-related contracts than any other private firm in the 10 years of the war.

The media outlet reported:

The company [KBR] was given $39.5 billion in Iraq-related contracts over the past decade, with many of the deals given without any bidding from competing firms, such as a $568-million contract renewal in 2010 to provide housing, meals, water and bathroom services to soldiers, a deal that led to a Justice Department lawsuit over alleged kickbacks.

Ukraine eyes natural gas deposits off Crimea

The Financial Times reported that the Ukrainian government specifically hopes to drill for offshore natural gas in the Black Sea, off of Crimea. Kiev is unable to access that gas, however.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014, following a referendum with 83% turnout in which 97% of participants said they wanted to join the Russian Federation. Western governments cast doubt on the vote, but polling by mainstream US firm Pew Research found that 91% of Crimeans said the referendum was free and fair and 88% wanted Ukraine to recognize the results.

Despite Crimeans’ overwhelming support for integration with Russia, Ukraine and its NATO sponsors have insisted that they will retake the region – not only because of its valuable offshore gas reserves, but also due its deep geostrategic importance for Russia.

Russia only has one warm water naval base, the Sevastopol base in Crimea. This is the main base used by Russia’s Black Sea Fleet – and, without it, the sea would effectively become controlled by NATO.

For Moscow, this is genuinely a security concern, not one motivated by ulterior economic interests.

Even the US military-backed think tank the RAND Corporation conceded this, publishing a report in April 2022 titled “Russia Does Not Seem to Be After Ukraine’s Gas Reserves”.

RAND wrote:

Ukraine does indeed control Europe’s second-largest known reserves of natural gas, almost 80 percent of which are located east of the Dnipro River. However, these reserves amount to less than 3 percent of Russia’s total natural gas reserves.

And though Ukraine theoretically might have considerable shale gas reserves, they remain largely unproven, and Russia currently has no experience or technology for shale gas production.

Naftogaz CEO meets with US ambassador involved in 2014 coup

During his trip to Washington this April, Naftogaz CEO Chernyshov not only met with corporate executives; he also sat down with senior government officials, like former US ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt.

Pyatt represented Washington in Kiev during a violent US-backed coup in 2014, which overthrew Ukraine’s democratically elected, geopolitically neutral government and installed a pro-Western regime.

A notorious leaked phone call from top State Department official Victoria Nuland showed US officials deciding who would run the Ukrainian government after the coup. Joining Nuland on the call was none other than Pyatt.

Today, Pyatt serves as US assistant secretary of state for energy resources, and he also coordinates cooperation between the G7 and Ukraine.

In a press release on Chernyshov’s meeting with Pyatt, Naftogaz wrote with pride that it “is working to attract American companies – their technologies, expertise and investments – to increase production in Ukraine”.

“We discussed a number of issues. From Ukraine’s new role in Europe’s energy security system to the implementation of corporate governance reform”, Chernyshov said.

Naftogaz participates in IMF structural adjustment program

On his trip to Washington, Naftogaz CEO Chernyshov also met with representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the US-dominated financial institution that is infamous for imposing neoliberal economic policies on indebted nations.

This March, the IMF made the unprecedented decision of approving a $15.6 billion loan for Ukraine.

The IMF had never before provided financing to a country that is at war. A reporter at US state media outlet NPR admitted that the IMF had to implement a “rule change”, which “was obviously, you know, politically motivated”.

Since it was created in 1944, the IMF refused to give loans to countries at war

But it is now giving $15.6 billion to Ukraine

US state media NPR admits the "rule change was obviously politically motivated"

This is the US "rules-based order": change the rules when it suits you

Naftogaz declared in a press release that “successful and consistent cooperation with the IMF is crucial for Ukraine’s resilience during the war”.

Using racist rhetoric that implied that Russia is “uncivilized”, Chernyshov stated:

Cooperation with the IMF is crucial for the stability of our country in times of war. The fact that we have a program is a signal to the civilized world that the country is moving in the right direction. Ukraine has made its civilizational choice. Naftogaz has fulfilled its part of the conditions for our country to receive the IMF program. This demonstrates that we are a reliable partner. Naftogaz will not let the country down.

The Naftogaz statement did not clarify what these “conditions” were, but a February press release from the IMF made it clear that it includes neoliberal reforms.

The IMF reported that its discussions with Ukrainian authorities “covered the medium-term macroeconomic framework, fiscal policy, the financing mix, financial sector policies, and governance”.

The IMF’s conditions included, “In particular, reform initiatives to enhance productivity and competitiveness of the private sector need to be advanced to help lay the foundation for a robust post-war growth against a backdrop of progress toward EU accession”.

Reforms to “enhance productivity and competitiveness of the private sector” is a euphemistic way of saying that Ukraine must further privatize state-owned industries and sell off public assets.

In its statement, the IMF stressed, “The private sector is also expected to contribute to the reconstruction efforts”.

The Fund also wrote favorably of “draft tax laws aimed to increase revenues”, calling for “shoring up tax revenues” and “creating fiscal space for war-related repairs”.

“Efforts to expand issuance in the domestic bond market should continue to help ensure a stable financing mix and eliminate reliance on monetary financing”, it added.

In short, the IMF’s conditions for Ukraine are a typical reflection of the Washington Consensus: neoliberal austerity measures, which increase the burden on Ukrainian workers, whose living standards are declining and who have fewer and fewer rights, while US corporations are offered profitable opportunities to buy up public assets.

Ukraine CAN’T Win & The Leaked Pentagon Docs Prove It!:

-v3PRfMOITQ
While publicly declaring that Ukraine is poised to make great gains from a military offensive this spring, in private the Pentagon’s top brass is admitting that Russia’s advances will be very difficult to dislodge, and the tide has decidedly turned against the NATO ally. That’s according to the leaked Pentagon documents, which spokesman John Kirby is very angry the public has had the opportunity to see. Guest host Aaron Maté and Jimmy Dore Show producer Malcolm Fleschner discuss the reality of the Ukraine War possibly settling in on the war’s cheerleaders in the west.

Europe Is Buying Record Amounts Of Refined Russian Fuels Through India, And Paying A Huge Markup

Last August, we were the first to show how Russia was bypassing Europe's so-called commodities embargo: it was selling LNG to China which was then re-selling it to Europe at a substantial mark up. And while we also frequently reported that Russia was using a similar sanctions bypass for oil, this time using India instead of China, few were willing to confirm as much: after all, it would seem very shortsighted if European consumers were paying an extra surcharge to India, while Russia was not suffering any adverse consequences from Europe's laughable "sanctions."

Not any more: on Friday, Bloomberg reported that for all of Europe's fire and brimstone about an embargo (which has gotten decidedly quieter in recent months), "Russian oil is still powering Europe just with the help of India."

As we reported at the time, last December the EU barred almost any seaborne crude oil imports from Russia. It extended the prohibition to refined fuels two months later. However, the rules didn’t stop countries like India from snapping up cheap Russian crude, turning it into fuels like diesel, and shipping it back to Europe at a big markup: as shown in the chart below, just the Brent to Urals price differential, a byproduct of the Russian sanctions, is about $25/bbl, almost a third of the price of a barrel of crude. The markups on Russian product are even greater when dealing with refined products such as gasoline or diesel.

In fact, India has become so good at reselling Russian oil to the same Europeans who refuse to buy it directly from Moscow for a much lower price, that the Asian country is on track to become Europe’s largest supplier of refined fuels this month while simultaneously buying record amounts of Russian crude, according to data from analytics firm Kpler.

In other words, Europe is still buying Russian oil, keeping Putin's military machine well-funded, but because of the virtue signaling exercise of buying Russian oil though a mediator, the transaction ends up costing Europeans billions more than if they simply had purchased the oil directly.

“Russian oil is finding its way back into Europe despite all the sanctioning and India ramping up fuel exports to the west is a good example of it,” said Viktor Katona, lead crude analyst at the firm. “With India taking in so much Russian barrels, it’s inevitable.”

As Bloomberg notes, "the development is double-edged for the EU. On the one hand, the bloc needs alternative sources of diesel now that it has cut off direct flows from Russia, previously its top supplier. However, it ultimately boosts demand for Moscow’s barrels, and means extra freight costs." In other words, Europe achieves none of its embargo goals (i.e., keeping Russian oil out of the market, preventing Putin from using oil to finance the war in Ukraine), while being hit with far higher energy prices.

It also means more competition for Europe’s oil refiners who can’t access cheap Russian crude, and comes amid wider market scrutiny about where the region’s diesel imports are coming from.

Repsol SA’s CEO Josu Jon Imaz said on Thursday that Russian diesel is entering Europe illegally and called on authorities to clamp down on the activity. He wasn’t talking about the trade via India but flows of diesel that originated in Russia... which of course is the same thing.

Hilariously, a preliminary inquiry into the matter by Spanish authorities didn’t find evidence that Russian diesel was entering the country, a government official said Friday, adding that a probe is ongoing. Of course, nobody in Europe wants to admit that they are indirectly funding Putin, so expect many more such "discoveries" as all other countries try to find if they are importing Russian oil only to find that everyone but them is using it.

Meanwhile, Europe’s refined fuel imports from India are set to surge above 360,000 barrels a day, edging just ahead of those of oil exporting titan Saudi Arabia, Kpler’s data show.

And the cherry on top: Russian crude oil arrivals to India are expected to surpass 2 million barrels a day in April, representing almost 44% of the nation’s overall oil imports, according to Kpler data. India then quickly re-exports the oil or processes it first into diesel and gasoline, and then sells it to European customers.

More than half of Russia’s seaborne oil shipments were to the European Union and Group of Seven nations before the bloc began to cut purchases in response to the nation’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

Finally, the question of what the point is of continued Russian "sanctions" remains, as the IIF's Robin Brooks explains in the following twitter thread, which once again makes clear that western sanctions against Russia have been a catastrophic failure... perhaps as was intended all along.

Evaluation of our sanctions policy

1. Only 2 questions matter. First, have our sanctions meaningfully curtailed Russia's ability to wage war? Second, are our sanctions a deterrent to countries that may wage war in the future? Unfortunately, the answer to both questions is: "No!"

2. Root problem is an infatuation with financial sanctions. These can be effective when used on current account deficit countries - Turkey in 2018 is an example - but they don't work on current account surplus countries. This is a key point that cannot be emphasized enough.

3. Russia shows how our financial sanctions failed. We sanctioned some banks, including the central bank (red), but not all. This meant that all the cash from Russia's current account surplus got routed through non-sanctioned Russian banks (blue). Putin still got all his cash...

4. So our financial sanctions did not prevent Putin getting all his cash in return for energy exports. All this cash just got routed through different banks than before. As a result, financial conditions in Russia eased back to pre-war levels, a big plus for Russia's war economy.

5. We could have avoided this, but it would have required sanctioning ALL Russian banks. That's the same as a trade embargo, since Putin no longer gets paid and stops exporting. This shows what's needed to hurt c/a surplus countries: a trade embargo! Not financial sanctions...

6. Number one lesson from Russia is that our infatuation with financial sanctions must end. They don't work on c/a surplus countries, unless we sanction all banks, in which case we're just doing a trade embargo. We need to be doing trade embargos instead of financial sanctions...

7. Had we done a hard energy embargo on Russia, this would have come at a cost to the West, but Russia would have gone into financial crisis, making the war harder for Putin to fight. An embargo would have also scared other potentially hostile current account surplus countries.

8. It's not too late. First, the West needs to end its focus on financial sanctions. Second, we need to start talking about hard trade-offs that are needed to confront c/a surplus countries. We need to stop giving them cash, which means we need to stop buying their stuff...

9. A footnote on the G7 oil price cap. The cap is recognition of the fact that Russia's current account surplus needs to be cut. But - thanks to Greek shipping oligarchs - the cap was set at $60 and wasn't binding. A mistake that can be fixed now by lowering the cap...

Ukrainian ammunition train destroyed – Russian MOD
Russian forces have destroyed a Ukrainian train carrying up to 200 tons of ammunition, Moscow’s Defense Ministry claimed on Sunday. The strike reportedly occurred in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic, near the city of Kramatorsk, which remains under Ukrainian control.

The Russian military has also been actively targeting Ukrainian artillery units, the ministry spokesman, Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, announced during a media briefing.

“Over the past 24 hours, tactical and army aviation, missile and artillery units of the Russian Armed Forces hit 82 Ukrainian artillery units at their firing positions, manpower and equipment in 115 areas,” Konashenkov stated.

The attack on the train appears to the largest military gain of the day, but earlier Russian forces also claimed a strike on a command post of Ukraine’s 81st airborne brigade near the village of Belogorovka, in Lugansk People’s Republic.

Over the past few days, both Russian and Ukrainian forces have been ramping up long-range strikes against each other.

On Saturday, the Russian military claimed the destruction of a major Ukrainian command center, responsible for operations of Kiev’s southern troops. The bombing was carried out with sea-based cruise missiles, according to Moscow.

Earlier this week, the Russian military launched a major missile salvo at Ukraine, targeting multiple groupings of Ukrainian military reserves. The military said the strike was a success, and prevented the redeployment of reserves toward the front line.

During the bombardment, a multi-story residential building was damaged in the Ukrainian city of Uman, with more than 20 civilians killed, according to Kiev. While it was not immediately clear what exactly hit the building, Ukrainian authorities have blamed Moscow for the incident. However, Kiev’s own troops have hit civilian targets in the country – and even beyond – with air defense projectiles on multiple occasions during the conflict, which has been raging since February 2022.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has intensified the shelling of Russia’s border regions, including the city of Donetsk, which has been subjected to artillery and rocket attacks on an almost daily basis. On Friday the city endured a massive shelling, which destroyed and damaged multiple residential buildings and critical infrastructure, leaving at least nine civilians dead and over a dozen injured.

Overnight, Kiev’s forces shelled the village of Suzemka in Russia’s Bryansk Region, killing at least four civilians according to the local Governor, Aleksandr Bogomaz.

Some quite literally refreshing news here as the many years long water blockade in the Donbass appears to have now ended :flower: :muscle: :sun:

Source: https://t.me/Slavyangrad/44064

Text:

The news of the day today is by no means a missile attack on Ukraine. Although it turned out to be extremely successful, it flew throughout the night to many places of concentration of equipment, warehouses of ammunition, the dispositions of the AFU. There is a jackpot in Pavlograd.

But the main news is the end of the water blockade of Donbass. Specialists of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation launched the Don-Donetsk water pipeline.

The problem with NATO doctrine is that they still act as though mentally scarred from world wars one and two.

Pathologically afraid of Verdun and the Somme repeating themselves so they practice rapid dominance, so-called "shock and awe", that kind of thing so that they can establish quick wins.

The problem is they're never really accounted for guided missiles or not having the freedom to mount unrestricted air strikes. Their reliance on aviation has meant their artillery has atrophied, so they're going to have a hard time fighting against people that can fight on their level like Russia.

The Bild publication, citing its sources, writes that when crossing the Dnieper , the Armed Forces of Ukraine intend to use small operational special forces on kayaks.

“They are silent and small in size, difficult to see at night. A special coating is applied on board so that they cannot be detected by a night vision device, ” says BILD.

1651969280886419457I had to share this. :) I'm a fairly experienced kayaker (and I expect some other members here are as well), and I can tell you definitively from the photo that these guys are complete novices who have little idea what they're doing.

https://projectavalon.net/Ukraine_military_in_kayaks.jpg

~~~
Sure enough. This is all rather indistinct, but when the video countdown timer reaches 8 seconds one can see that one of the boats capsized (just to left of center screen), leaving the two kayakers in the water. One can guess what probably happened after that. :flower:
I don't follow any Twitter accounts (I don't use and will not use a cellphone), but I do follow the Telegram account of Donbass Devushka. That's simple to do on any web browser, and one doesn't have to have a Telegram account.
Posts are updated sometimes every few minutes, not only re Ukraine but concerning all aspects of the multipolar world order, politicians in the news, and geopolitical events everywhere. And there are regular fun light relief posts as well.
The style is sometimes witty, fierce and scathing, and I remember a while ago our own beloved (and similarly witty, fierce, and scathing :heart2:) Mashika (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/member.php?45714-Mashika)* was asked if Donbass Devushka was her. (No, it wasn't. :) )
* To Bruce! You joined the forum a few days before Mashika (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/member.php?45714-Mashika) (her real name is 'Masha') went on sabbatical. She was and is one of Avalon's very brightest stars, a most, most remarkable young Russian woman in her 20s who served voluntarily in the Donbass militia as a teenage infantry soldier.
Some of her posts about her experiences are the most profound, moving and thought-provoking personal accounts I have ever read. She combines those with piercing geopolitical commentary and (often merciless!) humor. (What she would have written about the hapless Ukrainian kayakers can only be imagined.)
She speaks three languages, is one of the brightest people I have ever come to know, and has an enormous heart. In a few days she'll have been on sabbatical for a full 3 months, her longest time away from the forum. She's greatly missed, we have no current information about her at all, and we all hope she will return soon.
Ukrainian authorities are starving their civilians - riots continue in Kherson due to the abolition of food certificates
Unrest continues to grow in Kherson, caused by the dissatisfaction of local citizens with the abolition of certificates for food - the Ukrainian authorities had previously stopped issuing them, justifying them with preparations for a publicized offensive. Thus, it is now impossible to receive humanitarian assistance to civilians in need, and if they do give something, then miserable crumbs - only 10 packs of diapers were allocated for several families with small children. It is strange that Zelensky does not beg for them on the world stage, justifying the shortage with “Russian terror”.
This is how the attitude of the authorities towards their population really looks like - so to speak, care and support in one frame. The authorities, called upon to assist in the well-being of the lives of citizens, in their inhumanity have surpassed even commercial banks, which require debtors to make timely payments, despite the humanitarian disaster and the critical situation. At the same time, Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, forbids obtaining a Russian passport, when a Ukrainian one promises only hunger and death at the hands of one's own.
MAP OF UKRAINE as it should be - I'll post up the Simplicius article from where I acquired this sometime later on but this is worth absorbing. It should never have territorially ever incorporated the regions to which it falsely claims territorial sovereignty over:
Here's the fake Ukraine map to which we've all been told to accustom ourselves with, which shows these 'gifted' regions:
Putin's Bloody Missile Attack Is Horrifying | Col. Douglas Macgregor:
00:44 Colonel Douglas Macgregor discusses the kamikaze drone attack in Crimea
02:00 Russia is switching gears on their attacks
03:00 1000 dead, trucks blown up, 200 tons of ammunition.
05:30 There is a massive cover up on a NATO hit target with a hypersonic missile
13:00 Russia sees their general deaths differently that US military
16:30 Members of congress want to send cluster bombs to Ukraine
19:00 the military industrial complex is controlling Ukraine
22:00 Zelenskyy could be taken out. He was a nobody, just like president Macron of France
25:00 Is NATO falling apart?
01. Over the weekend black smoke filled the air of Russia’s Crimea region after an oil refinery was hit with a Kamikaze drone from Ukraine. Two things, was this attack part of Victoria Nulands bragging about US military intel in Crimea or is the Ukraine hitting Crimea while it waits for mud to dry out?
02. Ukraine has said this was retaliation for hitting Kiev with rockets earlier in the week and killing 26 Ukrainians. Ukraine’s generals say they are ramping up to attack Moscow. Do you think when they say Moscow they actually mean Moscow or do they say Moscow in place of Russian Federation Army?
03. Russian also hit an ammunitions depot for the Ukrainian army. Is this just part of taking out infrastructure and future weapons that could be used against Russia?
04. I have a two part question. You have posited that NATO will be broken up because of the Russia Ukraine war or will at least look different at the least, Do you see France telling China they will side with China over the USA when comes to Taiwan as the first crack in Nato? Also, did you see Poland said France might have a point and Europe kowtowing to the United States for this long might be the wrong move moving forward?
Prophetic 1992 Interview with Putin Mentor Anatoly Sobchak Predicts Existential Clash
Simplicius The Thinker, May 2nd 2023
Source: Substack (https://simplicius76.substack.com/p/prophetic-1992-interview-with-putin)
St. Petersburg’s first mayor and Putin mentor Anatoly Sobchak gives a sobering and darkly prophetic interview where he correctly outlines not only the injustice of Ukraine filching the land given to it by Russia after splitting from the USSR, but how Ukraine will now become a ‘time bomb’ as it arms itself for a future clash that would endanger mankind itself.
This is particularly interesting to me because I’ve mentioned several times before how people close to the geopolitical situation in the 90s and 2000s all predicted today’s events. Others who had only begun following the situation in recent years erroneously believed that the Ukraine situation had only begun to inflame after the various revolutions of the 2000s. For instance, the Orange Revolution of 2004-2005, and even the Georgian Rose Revolution of 2003, which was linked in a general way.
But in actuality, the tensions and hostilities between Ukraine and Russia can be traced back to right after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Of course, most of us know that the tensions can really be traced back even much further: to the CIA Project Aerodynamic (https://strategic-culture.org/news/2016/01/08/cia-undermining-and-nazifying-ukraine-since-1953/), for instance, which first began to establish radical nationalist enclave movements in western Ukraine, akin to the GLADIO network. (Here’s the paperwork on it from their own site (https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/docs/AERODYNAMIC%20%20%20VOL.%202_0030.pdf))
https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2b34fd5a-9a4d-4c9c-8eb4-94dc45fe32c9_689x900.jpeg
But it really spun into overdrive in the ‘90s, particularly after Western NGOs and Soros money began to pour in.
In the video at the top, I’ve included several other clips showing some of the Western/intel involvements in Ukraine dating to the ‘40s and ‘70s; I’d advise you all to watch its entirety. The fact is, people on both sides of the aisle knew this. So when the fraudulent Belovezha Accords were signed in ‘91, shrewd Russians could intuit that it was only a matter of time until Ukraine’s ultra-nationalism uncloaked itself from the shadows and came to the forefront to begin agitating in provocateur fashion against Russia.
This can be seen not only from a wealth of videos and offhand statements from officials at that time, but even in popular culture. For instance, one of Russia’s most popular films, 1997’s Brat (‘Brother’), featured a plotline with ex-Russian soldiers chased by Ukrainian ultra-nationalist mobsters who repeatedly flaunted their hatred of ‘Moskals’, while the Russian characters, in turn, hurled insults at them like ‘Nazi’ and ‘Banderite’.
This is why by the late 1990s, politicians like Zhirinovsky were already well attuned to the inevitability of circumstances. Included in the top video is another prophetic tirade of his given in a 1999 Council of Europe appearance, where he, with trademark stentorian bravura, exclaims that there will be a war for Crimea, the Balkans, Abkhazia, etc., in the near future.
He correctly invokes the U.S. empire’s chief strategy: perpetual balkanization. First you break up the USSR into its constituent parts; then you break up even those parts into smaller pieces. You continue on ad infinitum until nothing is left but powerless irredenta and rump-states run by warlords who are easily bribed, blackmailed, or killed for ultimate control. Pitting Ukraine against Russia in order to break up the critical Sevastopol port control was part of this strategy.
But back to Sobchak; he too was right. Ukraine thanklessly took the land graciously granted them by Russia, squatted on it for decades while enjoying Russian subsidization, then unceremoniously tore up the paperwork and left, taking the historically Russian lands with it.
Yesterday John Kirby refused to even discuss #Ukrainian losses, many independent analysts believe their losses far outweigh Russian losses by a factor of over 7-1.
This is how the U.S. propaganda game is being played. Project vast losses onto Russia with unverified and unverifiable claims, while completely memory holing the vast losses of your proxy, ignore the significant divisions and fatigue of the backers and ignore the vast corruption and criminality of the Kiev regime ( after all, it was the US that installed it)
Hundreds of thousands of dead Ukrainians, thousands of dead #Russians all the victims of an utterly preventable conflict that delivers profit to only one master, that master has now severed the cheap Russian energy that fuelled Europes industrial powerhouse Germany, and placed itself as the sole external energy source for a now essentially de industrialised Europe. The #EU now finds itself a divided and impoverished due to its policy of follow the leader and has energetically abandoned its sovereignty to please its Atlantic masters agenda, It is the same common denominator in every conflict on earth since WW2, the biggest global maker, seller and buyer of weapons of destruction and the biggest beneficiary by trillions of Dollars. It’s a meat grinder, Slavs in, cash out.
Not only is it #American corporations that sold the weapons at massive profit to fuel and perpetuate the conflict, it is and will be American big corporates that will Hoover up Ukraine’s natural resources and vast contracts to “rebuild” whatever remains of Europes most corrupt and impoverished states after this conflict ends. It’s a horrendous game of money and power, with the #Whitehouse firmly at its centre as it has been in every conflict in the past 6 decades.
CIA: Undermining and Nazifying Ukraine Since 1953
by Wayne Madsen
The recent declassification of over 3800 documents by the Central Intelligence Agency provides detailed proof that since 1953 the CIA operated two major programs intent on not only destabilizing Ukraine but Nazifying it with followers of the World War II Ukrainian Nazi leader Stepan Bandera.
The CIA programs spanned some four decades. Starting as a paramilitary operation that provided funding and equipment for such anti-Soviet Ukrainian resistance groups as the Ukrainian Supreme Liberation Council (UHVR); its affiliates, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), all Nazi Banderists. The CIA also provided support to a relatively anti-Bandera faction of the UHVR, the ZP-UHVR, a foreign-based virtual branch of the CIA and British MI-6 intelligence services. The early CIA operation to destabilize Ukraine, using exile Ukrainian agents in the West who were infiltrated into Soviet Ukraine, was codenamed Project AERODYNAMIC.
A formerly TOP SECRET CIA document dated July 13, 1953, provides a description of AERODYNAMIC: «The purpose of Project AERODYNAMIC is to provide for the exploitation and expansion of the anti-Soviet Ukrainian resistance for cold war and hot war purposes. Such groups as the Ukrainian Supreme Council of Liberation (UHVR) and its Ukrainian Insurgent Army (OUN), the Foreign Representation of the Ukrainian Supreme Council of Liberation (ZPUHVR) in Western Europe and the United States, and other organizations such as the OUN/B will be utilized». The CIA admitted in a 1970 formerly SECRET document that it had been in contact with the ZPUHVR since 1950.
The OUN-B was the Bandera faction of the OUN and its neo-Nazi sympathizers are today found embedded in the Ukrainian national government in Kiev and in regional and municipal governments throughout the country.
AERODYNAMIC placed field agents inside Soviet Ukraine who, in turn, established contact with Ukrainian Resistance Movement, particularly SB (intelligence service) agents of the OUN who were already operating inside Ukraine. The CIA arranged for airdrops of communications equipment and other supplies, presumably including arms and ammunition, to the «secret» CIA army in Ukraine. Most of the CIA’s Ukrainian agents received training in West Germany from the US Army’s Foreign Intelligence Political and Psychological (FI-PP) branch. Communications between the CIA agents in Ukraine and their Western handlers were conducted by two-way walkie-talkie (WT), shortwave via international postal channels, and clandestine airborne and overland couriers.
Agents airdropped into Ukraine carried a kit that contained, among other items, a pen gun with tear gas, an arctic sleeping bag, a camp axe, a trenching tool, a pocket knife, a chocolate wafer, a Minox camera and a 35 mm Leica camera, film, a Soviet toiletry kit, a Soviet cap and jacket, a .22 caliber pistol and bullets, and rubber «contraceptives» for ‘waterproofing film’. Other agents were issued radio sets, hand generators, nickel-cadmium batteries, and homing beacons.
An affiliated project under AERODYNAMIC was codenamed CAPACHO.
CIA documents show that AERODYNAMIC continued in operation through the Richard Nixon administration into 1970.
The program took on more of a psychological warfare operation veneer than a real-life facsimile of a John Le Carré «behind the Iron Curtain» spy novel. The CIA set up a propaganda company in Manhattan that catered to printing and publishing anti-Soviet ZPUHVR literature that would be smuggled into Ukraine. The new battleground would not be swampy retreats near Odessa and cold deserted warehouses in Kiev but at the center of the world of publishing and the broadcast media.
The CIA front company was Prolog Research and Publishing Associates, Inc., which later became known simply as Prolog. The CIA codename for Prolog was AETENURE. The group published the Ukrainian language «Prolog» magazine. The CIA referred to Prolog as a «non-profit, tax exempt cover company for the ZP/UHVR’s activities». The «legal entity» used by the CIA to fund Prolog remains classified information. However, the SECRET CIA document does state that the funds for Prolog were passed to the New York office «via Denver and Los Angeles and receipts are furnished Prolog showing fund origin to backstop questioning by New York fiscal authorities».
As for the Munich office of Prolog, the CIA document states that funding for it comes from an account separate from that of Prolog in New York from a cooperating bank, which also remains classified. In 1967, the CIA merged the activities of Prolog Munich and the Munich office of the Ukrainian exiled nationalist «Suchasnist» journal. The Munich office also supported the «Ukrainische Gesellschaft fur Auslandstudien». The CIA documents also indicate that US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents may have interfered with AERODYNAMIC agents in New York. A 1967 CIA directive advised all ZPUHVR agents in the United States to either report their contacts with United Nations mission diplomats and UN employees from the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR to the FBI or their own CIA project case officer. CIA agents in charge of AERODYNAMIC in New York and Munich were codenamed AECASSOWARY agents. Apparently not all that taken with the brevity of MI-6’s famed agent «007», one CIA agent in Munich was codenamed AECASSOWARY/6 and the senior agent in New York was AECASSOWARY/2.
AECASSOWARY agents took part in and ran other AERODYNAMIC teams that infiltrated the Vienna World Youth Conference in 1959. The Vienna infiltration operation, where contact with made with young Ukrainians, was codenamed LCOUTBOUND by the CIA.
In 1968, the CIA ordered Prolog Research and Publishing Associates, Inc. terminated and replaced by Prolog Research Corporation, «a profit-making, commercial enterprise ostensibly serving contracts for unspecified users as private individuals and institutions».
“The once bright city became gloomy and sad:” survivor of 2014 Odessa Massacre reflects back on tragedy
Originally published: CovertAction Magazine on May 10, 2022 (more by CovertAction Magazine)
On May 2, 2014, at least 48 people were killed when right-wing Ukrainian forces burned down the Trade Unions Building in Odessa. The victims had taken refuge in the building after opposing the February 2014 coup d’etat in Ukraine that was backed by the U.S. State Department.
Eight years after the massacre, the International Action Center, a New York-based anti-war group founded by former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, hosted a public commemoration that included testimony from a survivor named Alexey who currently lives in Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.
Alexey spoke movingly about his friend and comrade, Andrey Brezevsky, who was beaten to death by neo-Nazi thugs with a metal bar after he jumped out of the Trade Unions Building to escape the fire.
Brezevsky’s mother, after her son’s death, lost her teaching position at a local university after being denounced by right-wing groups.
Alexey emphasized that none of the perpetrators of the Odessa massacre was ever punished. In the aftermath of the atrocity, neo-Nazi groups mocked and persecuted the relatives of the victims, like Alexey’s mother.
The once bright city became “gloomy and sad,” Alexey said. The massacre had not happened by accident, but was a “planned act of intimidation” by Ukraine’s post-coup government. It was “designed to intimidate the opposition [and] was an act of political terrorism perpetrated by the Ukrainian state targeting unarmed civilians [the victims in the fire were all unarmed].”
Alexey believes that the power of the Nazis will soon come to an end in Ukraine. He said that now “they are dying every day. The Russians are destroying these murderers, and rapists and justice will prevail. The people guilty of the Odessa trade union massacre will finally be brought to justice.”
“A Human Rights Disaster”
Leonid Ilderkin, a Ukrainian communist in exile and member of the coordination council of the Union of Political Refugees and Political Prisoners of Ukraine, followed Alexey, stating that Ukraine has become a “human rights disaster” following the 2014 Maidan coup.
Since that time, the Ukrainian government under Petro Poroshenko and Volodymyr Zelensky have tried to demolish all types of political opposition and to hunt down everyone who does not like them.
The CIA, it should be noted, has assisted in these latter operations and helped to produce blacklists that are used to pinpoint dissidents for arrest.
Ilderkin said that he was a witness to the protests in Maidan Square which began in November 2013, and saw the kinds of groups that were supporting them.
An Inevitable War..
How the United States destabilised Ukraine, overthrew a Democracy and built the scaffold its proxy war against Russia is now burning on.
By Chay Bowes @boweschay
During a recent interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, ex Chancellor and European political heavyweight Angela Merkel, revealed what many had suspected for some time. Merkel confirmed that the Minsk accords, a pair of comprehensive 2014 and 2015 diplomatic treaties, signed by Russia and Kiev (and supported by the EU and U.S.) aimed at ending the civil war in Ukraine, were subverted by the Ukrainians and their NATO associates to buy time to expand its military capabilities.
The fact that the accords, which were widely regarded as a truly workable solution to the conflict, were not prioritised by the U.S. for implementation, speaks volumes when assessing the sincerity of the U.S. position. Just prior to Merkel’s stunning revelations, Ex Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko was also covertly recorded admitting that the process was abused by Ukraine and used to prepare for war with Russia.
Given the high level of interface between NATO and Ukraine during this period, It is difficult to imagine that this manipulation of the peace process wasn’t carried out with the full knowledge, and probable assistance of NATO and the U.S. It is now abundantly clear, at least to all objective observers, that the U.S. never seriously intended to prevent the current conflict in Ukraine. On the contrary, any cursory assessment of their past and contemporary covert and overt involvement in the region, suggests they’ve been working to destabilise Russia via Ukraine for decades.
Facts such as their encouragement, and material assistance, in the building of a huge 250,000 man, NATO trained and equipped Army facing Russia’s border, illustrate the reality of what the U.S. project in Ukraine was about, regardless of their pronouncements on diplomacy.
Despite decades of Russian warnings on NATO expansion, and despite the occaisionally sincere attempts of some European countries, NATO and their U.S. kingpins forged ahead along a path to what would become an inevitable war. Considering this, can any of the numerous. U.S. NATO statements suggesting they “exhausted all diplomatic efforts” to prevent this conflict be taken seriously? The facts suggest not.
Zelensky TOLD Rupert Murdoch To Fire Tucker Carlson?:
j-W8vlqFynQ
A few weeks before Tucker Carlson was fired, Rupert Murdoch reportedly spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It’s not clear what Zelensky said, but it’s been well established that the Ukrainian government objected to Carlson’s opposition to U.S. support for Ukraine in the war with Russia. Guest host Aaron Maté and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss whether Zelensky had an impact on the Fox News network’s decision to jettison Carlson.
CIA: Undermining and Nazifying Ukraine Since 1953
by Wayne Madsen
The recent declassification of over 3800 documents by the Central Intelligence Agency provides detailed proof that since 1953 the CIA operated two major programs intent on not only destabilizing Ukraine but Nazifying it with followers of the World War II Ukrainian Nazi leader Stepan Bandera.
The CIA programs spanned some four decades. Starting as a paramilitary operation that provided funding and equipment for such anti-Soviet Ukrainian resistance groups as the Ukrainian Supreme Liberation Council (UHVR); its affiliates, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), all Nazi Banderists. The CIA also provided support to a relatively anti-Bandera faction of the UHVR, the ZP-UHVR, a foreign-based virtual branch of the CIA and British MI-6 intelligence services. The early CIA operation to destabilize Ukraine, using exile Ukrainian agents in the West who were infiltrated into Soviet Ukraine, was codenamed Project AERODYNAMIC.
A formerly TOP SECRET CIA document dated July 13, 1953, provides a description of AERODYNAMIC: «The purpose of Project AERODYNAMIC is to provide for the exploitation and expansion of the anti-Soviet Ukrainian resistance for cold war and hot war purposes. Such groups as the Ukrainian Supreme Council of Liberation (UHVR) and its Ukrainian Insurgent Army (OUN), the Foreign Representation of the Ukrainian Supreme Council of Liberation (ZPUHVR) in Western Europe and the United States, and other organizations such as the OUN/B will be utilized». The CIA admitted in a 1970 formerly SECRET document that it had been in contact with the ZPUHVR since 1950.
The OUN-B was the Bandera faction of the OUN and its neo-Nazi sympathizers are today found embedded in the Ukrainian national government in Kiev and in regional and municipal governments throughout the country.
AERODYNAMIC placed field agents inside Soviet Ukraine who, in turn, established contact with Ukrainian Resistance Movement, particularly SB (intelligence service) agents of the OUN who were already operating inside Ukraine. The CIA arranged for airdrops of communications equipment and other supplies, presumably including arms and ammunition, to the «secret» CIA army in Ukraine. Most of the CIA’s Ukrainian agents received training in West Germany from the US Army’s Foreign Intelligence Political and Psychological (FI-PP) branch. Communications between the CIA agents in Ukraine and their Western handlers were conducted by two-way walkie-talkie (WT), shortwave via international postal channels, and clandestine airborne and overland couriers.
Agents airdropped into Ukraine carried a kit that contained, among other items, a pen gun with tear gas, an arctic sleeping bag, a camp axe, a trenching tool, a pocket knife, a chocolate wafer, a Minox camera and a 35 mm Leica camera, film, a Soviet toiletry kit, a Soviet cap and jacket, a .22 caliber pistol and bullets, and rubber «contraceptives» for ‘waterproofing film’. Other agents were issued radio sets, hand generators, nickel-cadmium batteries, and homing beacons.
An affiliated project under AERODYNAMIC was codenamed CAPACHO.
CIA documents show that AERODYNAMIC continued in operation through the Richard Nixon administration into 1970.
The program took on more of a psychological warfare operation veneer than a real-life facsimile of a John Le Carré «behind the Iron Curtain» spy novel. The CIA set up a propaganda company in Manhattan that catered to printing and publishing anti-Soviet ZPUHVR literature that would be smuggled into Ukraine. The new battleground would not be swampy retreats near Odessa and cold deserted warehouses in Kiev but at the center of the world of publishing and the broadcast media.
The CIA front company was Prolog Research and Publishing Associates, Inc., which later became known simply as Prolog. The CIA codename for Prolog was AETENURE. The group published the Ukrainian language «Prolog» magazine. The CIA referred to Prolog as a «non-profit, tax exempt cover company for the ZP/UHVR’s activities». The «legal entity» used by the CIA to fund Prolog remains classified information. However, the SECRET CIA document does state that the funds for Prolog were passed to the New York office «via Denver and Los Angeles and receipts are furnished Prolog showing fund origin to backstop questioning by New York fiscal authorities».
As for the Munich office of Prolog, the CIA document states that funding for it comes from an account separate from that of Prolog in New York from a cooperating bank, which also remains classified. In 1967, the CIA merged the activities of Prolog Munich and the Munich office of the Ukrainian exiled nationalist «Suchasnist» journal. The Munich office also supported the «Ukrainische Gesellschaft fur Auslandstudien». The CIA documents also indicate that US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents may have interfered with AERODYNAMIC agents in New York. A 1967 CIA directive advised all ZPUHVR agents in the United States to either report their contacts with United Nations mission diplomats and UN employees from the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR to the FBI or their own CIA project case officer. CIA agents in charge of AERODYNAMIC in New York and Munich were codenamed AECASSOWARY agents. Apparently not all that taken with the brevity of MI-6’s famed agent «007», one CIA agent in Munich was codenamed AECASSOWARY/6 and the senior agent in New York was AECASSOWARY/2.
AECASSOWARY agents took part in and ran other AERODYNAMIC teams that infiltrated the Vienna World Youth Conference in 1959. The Vienna infiltration operation, where contact with made with young Ukrainians, was codenamed LCOUTBOUND by the CIA.
In 1968, the CIA ordered Prolog Research and Publishing Associates, Inc. terminated and replaced by Prolog Research Corporation, «a profit-making, commercial enterprise ostensibly serving contracts for unspecified users as private individuals and institutions».
Documentaries and critical presentations in the Avalon library
NOTE: I'll do a more thorough library update soon on the relevant thread. In the meantime, this is a very short snapshot of over 400 days work.
There's a ton of video (and audio) in the library around anything to do with Ukraine. This includes over 800 pieces of video and photographic documentation of the 2022 Russian SMO which is added to on a near daily basis, where possible to do; historical speeches from Putin and Lavrov; shorter clips/segments of key commentary to include mp3s; 80+ Patrick Lancaster film; 50+ Scott Ritter; 40+ Col Macgregor interviews; Eva Bartlett and, you name it, it's probably there.
This (below) is a sample, not complete, of what we have there at the moment.
Having trouble finding stuff on the interweb? Check the library :)
New Weapon!
Russian FAB-250 bombs are now also equipped with planning and correction modules (UMPC) like their big sisters FAB-500.
The crews of Su-34 front-line bombers have received (https://tass.ru/armiya-i-opk/17663845) the ability to use FAB-250 high-explosive air bombs without entering the enemy's air defence zone.
The module consists of a winged platform and a navigation system, which allows it to deliver accurate strikes at predetermined coordinates.
At a speed of 800-900 km/h, the bomb module can be launched at distances of up to 80 km.
Finland refused to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine
At a press conference in Helsinki, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked Finnish President Sauli Niinistö to hand over modern fighter jets to the Ukrainian army.
Niinistö refused, arguing that due to Finland's geographic location, with its long border with Russia, it "cannot give up" its existing aircraft until the delivery of new ones, scheduled for 2025.
“We will carry out a counteroffensive, and after that we will receive aircraft,” Zelensky replied.
He also added that "I am sure that Kiev will have planes," because "Ukraine showed itself on the battlefield even before the supply of Western weapons began."
A useful analysis by Larry Johnson, talking to Judge Andrew Napolitano in a 20 minute video livestreamed a few hours ago.
In the first 8 minutes, Johnson addresses the attack on the Kremlin. He notes that the drone, clearly a small device, appears to have been shot down or intercepted, and only a bit of flaming debris hit the roof of the building. The important thing will be an inspection of any drone parts that can be found, to establish who made it. (The US? Poland? Ukraine?)
He also notes that the response within Russia has been one of outraged, unifying anger. He guesses (I'd think correctly) that Ukraine's hope must have been that Russia would be provoked to do something major in immediate response, and then the US might roll in their troops to Odessa or elsewhere.
Putin hasn't said a word yet, but a retaliation — a measured but very definite one — will have to come to satisfy loud Russian demands.
Forgive my ignorance, but would it not be more important to determine who deployed the drone, rather than who made it?
"Lloyd Austin, in April 2022, said, our purpose here is to exhaust the Russian army. Well, what does that mean, exhaust? It means throwing Ukrainians at them," he answered.
"We've sacrificed 300,000 Ukrainians. The commander of the Special Forces unit in the Ukraine ... has said that 80% of his troops are dead or wounded and that they cannot rebuild the unit."
But after learning about the 2014 coup, the murder of over 14,000 Russian civilians in the Donbas, the Ukrainian government and armed forces being filled with Nazis, the 46 biological warfare labs run by the same people who gave us covid, and the refusal of Ukraine to implement the Minsk Accords, I'm passionately supporting Russia. I'm a 53 year old Army vet who has voted Republican my entire life and to hear Mitch McConnell say that defeating Russia is the Republican Party's most important issue makes me sick. Recession, inflation, a wide open border where drug and human traffickers operate with impunity, a vaccine that has killed and injured hundreds of millions world-wide, an election process that is totally corrupt, etc. and the war that these Deep State scumbags instigated is the most important issue? We need to remove our entire government and start again from scratch".
George Galloway's take on the drone attack. Are we in danger of being complacent about Russia's patience? I don't think they can ignore this . . .My own take: :)
It wasn't an "assassination attempt" It was more like a couple of big fireworks that did almost zero damage and wouldn't have even been capable of penetrating the roof of the building.
But it was symbolic, as if to say: "Pay attention: we can get this far with a couple of small drones. Let's see what happens when we launch a missile."
The intention will have been to provoke Russia into a military over-reaction, precisely because of the symbolism. But Putin, well aware of that, won't take that bait.
However, he has to balance that with a response to the demands of the outraged Russian people, who themselves are losing patience. If Putin under-reacts, then he may slide into political danger. (But of course, he knows that too.)
What Europe may not fully realize is that actions like this are only going to cause Putin to refuse to 'negotiate' with anyone at all. The irony is that if Putin did go to the negotiating table to "make a deal with Zelensky", he'd be perceived by the Russians as being weak and conciliatory, and that itself would ensure his removal from power. In that sense, it all reinforces the growing support Russia is quietly getting from the entirety of the so-called 'global south'.
If Putin were to be removed from power (or be assassinated somehow), them Medvedev would simply step in and nuke the whole of the west within days. It might actually be pretty wise for US/NATO to ensure that Putin stays in power — unless someone's deliberate plan is for a nuclear war.
Highly unlikely! The Ukrainian postal service had already prepared their celebratory, commemorative stamp. :) That takes time, at least a week or two to prepare the artwork, the printing, and the publicity. Impossible in just 24 hours or less.
Hello,
It is a bit puzzling if this was a geniue attempted attack, why the drones were not more lethal, as we have seen from both sides, they have such lethal drones.
It therefore does seem that the intent was not to cause major damage but to create a reaction, hey you now need to respond more lethally since we were able to through a rock through your window.
Just utter bonkers, that a small faction of humans/entities and people who are blindly willing to carry out these events, doing all they can take to create WW3.
I wonder, if the writing is on the wall, banks collapsing, Jobs being lost, food crisis, that they need a big event to reset and are more than happy to bring the reset through a world war.
Watching the main media talk, you would think wee ukraine is fighting the big nasty bear, and we just giving them some help. No, the west is creating this War, providing soldiers, intel, money, equipment and all against a country with nuclear weapons and resources to stand up for themselves. If you are Russian, and see the major parts of the world fund a war against you, that requires a level of restraint not to say F IT and just launch the nukes. :( So depressing.
Zelenski's Regime Is Finished
May 04, 2023
Yesterday's drone attack on the Kremlin (and other installations) mark the end of the Zelenski regime. While Russia had so far refrained from regime change in Kiev it will now have to pursue it.
The former prime minister of Israel Naftali Bennet had reported that president Putin had promised him not to hit Zelenski:
“I knew Zelensky was under threat, in a bunker… I said to [Putin], ‘Do you intend to kill Zelensky?’ He said, ‘I won’t kill Zelensky,’” Bennett recalled in the interview, which was published on his own YouTube channel.
...
Bennett said he called the Ukrainian president immediately after the three-hour encounter with Putin, and told him, “I’ve just come out of a meeting — [Putin] is not going to kill you.
“[Zelensky] asked me, ‘Are you sure?’ I said 100 percent. [Putin’s] not going to kill you.”
Bennett recalled: “Two hours later, Zelensky went to his office, and did a selfie in the office, [in which the Ukrainian president said,] ‘I’m not afraid.’”
Well, now he has very good reason to again be afraid, very afraid. As former ambassador MK Bhadrakumar writes:
Make no mistake, this is a tipping point; the clumsy attempt on Putin’s life jolts the kaleidoscope beyond recognition. The only comforting thought is that the Kremlin leadership is not going to be driven by emotion. The considered Kremlin reaction is available from the remarks by the Russian Ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov:
“How would Americans react if a drone hit the White House, the Capitol or the Pentagon? The answer is obvious for any politician as well as for an average citizen: the punishment will be harsh and inevitable.”
The ambassador went on to draw the bottom line: “Russia will respond to this insolent and presumptuous terrorist attack. We will answer when we consider it necessary. We will answer in accordance with the assessments of the threat that Kiev posed to the leadership of our country.”
I agree with Bhadrakumar that there will be no knee-jerk reaction from Moscow. But public opinion in Russia demands that there will be payback for the attack and against anyone involved in it.
Putin’s hands are tied beyond a point when the country is in rage and demanding retribution, as evident from the comments by former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev: “After today’s terrorist attack, there are no options left except for the physical elimination of Zelensky and his clique.”
That Zelenski fled to Finland, then to the Netherlands and Germany after the drones hit the Kremlin is a sure sign of his complicity in the act.
When (if?) he comes back to Kiev it will be bunker life for the rest of his reign.
A list of CIA and MI6 agents who worked or are working in Scandinavia was leaked online
This document is six pages long. It lists 78 people, all employees of either U.S. or British intelligence agencies. The countries where they are or were active until recently are Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden. The first three, we should remind you, are members of NATO, the latter is waiting for approval of the application.
Among the curious characters on the list is Sonya Lim, a CIA agent. According to the leaked document, she worked in Copenhagen until 2020 and was an advisor at the American embassy. According to open sources, she was only unclassified in the spring of 2021.
Her spy career spanned 24 years. Sonya went undercover in war zones, including Iraq. She now lectures and teaches seminars on espionage, intelligence, counterterrorism, and covert operations. Once in an interview, when asked if she would return to the CIA if asked, given everything going on around Ukraine and China, she said, "Yes."
Lim's profile on the national security media website states, "During her service, she gained significant experience in geopolitical and transnational issues related to Russia, China, counterterrorism and counterintelligence."
The other person on the list is Thomas Dodd. He is the deputy British ambassador to the Russian Federation. Rumors of his ties to MI6 have long been circulating. The list leaked online may be an extra confirmation.
Dodd was British ambassador to Finland from 2018 to 2021. The list identifies him as an MI6 employee who conducted special operations in Afghanistan. Indeed, according to official information, Dodd worked in Kabul as deputy British ambassador in 2009-2010.
In Russia, he was caught up in a scandal in the fall of 2022. At that time, Dodd and the British ambassador arrived unofficially in Ekaterinburg and visited the Yeltsin Center. According to the media, they allegedly talked to foreign agents and their representatives there.
Also on the list is Christa Neumann, first secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm since 2020 and an expert on China and the Baltics. Married to Edward Newmann, a CIA officer and expert on China, Lithuania and Eastern Europe.
Or Andrew Minir, who works in Helsinki as the first secretary at the U.S. embassy, is a Marine who served in Afghanistan. Married to Jenna Minir, who is a CIA officer.
The authenticity of the list leaked on the Internet, of course, has not been officially confirmed.
A list of CIA and MI6 agents who worked or are working in Scandinavia was leaked online
This document is six pages long. It lists 78 people, all employees of either U.S. or British intelligence agencies. The countries where they are or were active until recently are Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden. The first three, we should remind you, are members of NATO, the latter is waiting for approval of the application.
Among the curious characters on the list is Sonya Lim, a CIA agent. According to the leaked document, she worked in Copenhagen until 2020 and was an advisor at the American embassy. According to open sources, she was only unclassified in the spring of 2021.
Her spy career spanned 24 years. Sonya went undercover in war zones, including Iraq. She now lectures and teaches seminars on espionage, intelligence, counterterrorism, and covert operations. Once in an interview, when asked if she would return to the CIA if asked, given everything going on around Ukraine and China, she said, "Yes."
Lim's profile on the national security media website states, "During her service, she gained significant experience in geopolitical and transnational issues related to Russia, China, counterterrorism and counterintelligence."
The other person on the list is Thomas Dodd. He is the deputy British ambassador to the Russian Federation. Rumors of his ties to MI6 have long been circulating. The list leaked online may be an extra confirmation.
Dodd was British ambassador to Finland from 2018 to 2021. The list identifies him as an MI6 employee who conducted special operations in Afghanistan. Indeed, according to official information, Dodd worked in Kabul as deputy British ambassador in 2009-2010.
In Russia, he was caught up in a scandal in the fall of 2022. At that time, Dodd and the British ambassador arrived unofficially in Ekaterinburg and visited the Yeltsin Center. According to the media, they allegedly talked to foreign agents and their representatives there.
Also on the list is Christa Neumann, first secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm since 2020 and an expert on China and the Baltics. Married to Edward Newmann, a CIA officer and expert on China, Lithuania and Eastern Europe.
Or Andrew Minir, who works in Helsinki as the first secretary at the U.S. embassy, is a Marine who served in Afghanistan. Married to Jenna Minir, who is a CIA officer.
The authenticity of the list leaked on the Internet, of course, has not been officially confirmed.
Wagner boss announces ‘withdrawal from Bakhmut’ 5 May, 2023
Evgeny Prigozhin says his troops need time to recover and has asked the regular Russian Army to take over their positions
The head of the Wagner Group Private Military Company, Evgeny Prigozhin, has announced that his forces will be withdrawing from the key Donbass city of Artyomovsk (known in Ukrainian as Bakhmut) on May 10. He has asked the Russian Army to take over the positions Wagner forces held in the city, while fighters recover.
In a video published on Prigozhin’s press service on Telegram, which was accompanied by an open letter addressed to the Defense Ministry, the president, and the people, the Wagner chief complained that his forces were not receiving enough artillery munitions and were unable to continue to hold the city, which is a regional logistics hub and was the site of months of urban warfare.
He said that his forces were supposed to have completely captured Artyomovsk by May 9, but claimed that since May 1, “paramilitary bureaucrats” had cut off his troops from nearly all artillery munitions.
“The offensive resources of PMC Wagner ran out at the beginning of April, but we are advancing despite the fact that the enemy forces outnumber us by five times,” Prigozhin said, adding that due to the lack of ammunition, Wagner’s losses are growing exponentially every day.
“Despite all this, the council of Wagner PMC commanders has decided to hold their positions and continue the offensive on Bakhmut until May 10, 2023, in order to celebrate the sacred holiday for Russians – May 9, Victory Day – with the brilliance of Russian weapons,” the statement reads.
Prigozhin declared that on May 10, his fighters will hand over their positions in Artyomovsk to the Russian Army and withdraw the remnants of the Wagner PMC to rear camps to “lick their wounds.”
The PMC chief concluded by saying “we will lick our wounds, and when the motherland will be in danger, we will once again stand for its defense. The Russian people can count on us.”
Vladimir Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said the Kremlin is aware of Prigozhin’s statement, but declined to comment on the matter, as it has to do with Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.
The battle for Artyomovsk, a key rail and road junction in Donbass, has emerged as one of the most intense and bloody engagements of the conflict in Ukraine, with both sides reportedly suffering significant casualties. Wagner forces have been at the forefront of the street fighting in the city. Kiev has sent tens of thousands of soldiers to the front, despite Wagner and other Russian troops establishing control over all the supply roads, leaving the Ukrainians almost surrounded.
West is fueling Kiev’s ‘sense of impunity’ – Moscow 4 May, 2023
The US and its allies have installed “crooks and bandits” in the Ukrainian government, the Russian Foreign Ministry has claimed
https://mf.b37mrtl.ru/files/2023.05/m/64536bcc85f5402dc363e3e1.jpg
The US and its allies are ultimately responsible for the actions of the “Kiev regime,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has claimed.
“They destroyed the lawful government in Ukraine [in 2014], put crooks and bandits in charge, provided them with money and weapons, imbued them with a sense of absolute impunity and provided political cover and military support,” Zakharova said on Thursday.
The official stressed that Russia holds “Washington, London, and NATO in general” accountable for all of the Ukrainian government’s actions.
On Wednesday, the office of President Vladimir Putin accused Kiev of launching two drones at the Kremlin in an attempt to assassinate the Russian leader. Ukrainian officials have rejected the allegation, claiming that their country does not attack targets in Russia.
Moscow has warned that it reserves the right to retaliate in a way it deems appropriate and at a time and place of its choosing.
Ukrainian troops are expected to launch a long-touted counteroffensive against Russian forces within the coming weeks. Foreign allies have pledged to support Kiev for as long as it takes to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Russia.
Leading Western media outlets have suggested that the operation could be a decisive moment for the conflict, and that Ukraine may find it difficult to secure future aid, should it fail to make significant gains on the ground.
Ukrainian troops tortured and killed prisoners – ex-German soldier 4 May, 2023
A former member of Kiev’s International Legion has said in an interview that he regrets not leaving sooner
https://mf.b37mrtl.ru/files/2023.05/m/64538f8285f54025c70a8882.jpg
A former German soldier who traveled to fight for Ukraine against Russia has claimed Ukrainian soldiers are carrying out summary executions of prisoners of war. He published the allegations in a book he wrote about his experience and later he called the episode “dirty” in an interview with German media outlet T-Online.
“You know that this happens in every army and in every war. It does not change the fact that Ukraine has the right to fight this war,” Jonas Kratzenberg said of the alleged war crime.
A veteran of Afghanistan, Kratzenberg was discharged from the German military in February 2022 and went to Ukraine the following month, according to a biography published online. He claimed to be a volunteer who wanted to defend the country and also to make use of his skills as a soldier. He joined the so-called International Legion, a force created by Kiev to accommodate foreign fighters.
Kratzenberg’s stint lasted until December when he was seriously injured in a Russian drone strike. The book, which he co-authored and was published in April, tells of his time in Ukraine.
The victims of the alleged summary execution were three Russian soldiers and a civilian. Kratzenberg told T-Online that he knew of two such cases, one of which was later investigated, but he didn’t know if anyone was held accountable.
The German citizen claimed that Legion volunteer were often underpaid or not paid at all and that he saw footage of a Ukrainian commander describing such recruits as cannon fodder. He added that in hindsight he should have left sooner than he did.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said in a report from March that it possessed evidence of extrajudicial killings of Russian POWs and other forms of mistreatment by Ukrainian troops. It said it was “not aware of any prosecutions of the perpetrators” by the Ukrainian authorities.
Kremlin Attacked: Putin Assassination Attempt?
Russia on Wednesday said #Ukraine attempted to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin in a drone attack on the Kremlin.
Videos began circulating on social media of an object exploding into a cloud of smoke over the #Kremlin. The Russian government issued a statement saying its military services had taken out two attacking drones in what it called “a planned terrorist attack and an assassination attempt targeting the president.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky soon denied any involvement during a press conference in which he said his forces were busy “defending our villages and cities.” He also said that “[w]e do not have enough weapons even for this.”
Prior to the alleged drone strike on Wednesday, Russian state media had reported last week on other drones being found near Moscow, including one allegedly loaded with explosives.
In its Wednesday statement, the Russian government said that “Russia reserves the right to take countermeasures wherever and whenever it deems appropriate.”
Top Russian officials have already called for retaliation. Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairman of Russia’s lower house of Parliament, wrote on Telegram, “We will demand the use of weapons capable of stopping and destroying the Kyiv terrorist regime.”
Soon after Volodin posted his comments, Dmitry Medvedev—the former president of Russia and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council—also called for action in a Telegram post.
“After today’s terrorist attack, there are no options left other than the physical elimination of Zelensky and his clique,” Medvedev wrote.
On this edition of Maverick News, we discuss the assassination attempt on #Putin, with Tyler McConnell of the Center for Political Innovation.
Lori Spencer provides historical analysis of why this attack coming on the eve of #Moscow’s annual #VictoryDay parade strikes at the heart of the Russian people, and we get an update on Scott Ritter’s Mission to Moscow from his longtime friend Jeff Norman, producer of “Ask The Inspector” on the U.S. Tour of Duty Network.
Wagner / Kremlin
Interesting game going on between the Wagner boss and the Kremlin. Wagner is threatening to withdraw the troops from Artremovsk on May 10th, because of missing ammo and to hand over the territory fought for until then to Russian troops.
How is such an action supposed to work in a battle scenario with an announcement?
Whatever is behind it, such an announced exchange of troops is like informing my opponent in battle about my weaknesses beforehand. The PMC's connections to the powerful people in Moscow are good enough to clearly communicate an undersupply of ammunition and create remedial actions.
To say the least, I find this social media communication neither clever nor purposeful. The enemy will not fall for it and the image to the outside world appears chaotic, which it certainly is not. At this point I criticize both sides for this drama - stop this nonsense and concentrate on the essentials.
Is he following a Wagner Ploy?, Psyop?
Prigozhin, whatever his other strengths, is a mercurial, narcissistic showman. He's undoubtedly an effective front-man for his organization (though he's never served in any military and is not the Wagner military commander), but his antics must be continually exasperating for Putin and the Russian Security Council.
Many believe that after the war is over he has his sights on a political career, but theater like this won't help him one bit. Complaining publicly isn't what Russia needs or wants, and definitely isn't in the Russian national character.
Interesting comment from https://t.me/NabrezhnyeIntel
⚡️On Prigozhin's Rant:
1. The issue with ammunition and supply is being resolved: The amount of ammunition supplied to Wagner has not changed at all; it is that Wagner has continued to expand and has many more artillery units then it used to, and is requiring more and more shells. This means that the MOD is always atleast a week behind in what the actual figure of shells is needed. The MOD is currently working on doubling the supply of shells; the issue is simply logistics, artillery is being burnt through quicker then trucks can supply. This is not an acute shell shortage. The intensification of fighting is now creating a larger demand for Artillery. This is not an issue of greediness or selfishness.
3. Ukrainians have increased their firing of artillery, yes; but they are burning through a significant portion of the entire Army's stockpile. The AFU's stockpile is almost at its lowest since the beginning of the SMO, Ukrainians are stealing reserves of Artillery shells from fronts such as Kherson and Kharkov. If the pace of artillery shelling is continued, the entire Ukrainian army will have to introduce a severe shell stoppage.
4. Wagner losses to Ukrainian losses are 1:7; for every one hundred men Wagner losses, around 700 Ukrainians lives are lost. Wagner employees tactics which are very artillery heavy (which explains the shortage) but also limits losses. Wagner has always employed these tactics and they usually bring great results. These tactics also mean that more artillery usage equals less loss of life.
5. In the past 26 days, 1,000 employees of the Wagner PMC have lost their lives, however, Ukrainians suffer casualties ranging between 5,000 and 13,000 in the past month or so just in Artemovsk alone. Our guys die heroes.
6. A quick fix to this would be to target Ukrainian Artillery and MLRS assets more then Artillery used in actual offensive operations, this would soon drain the capabilities of the AFU to fire Artillery and would allow more shells to be allocated for offensive operations in the future. Russian units in the Krasnoye front too often are targeting AFU acculumations within Chasovoy Yar quite frequently.
🇷🇺⚔️🇺🇦Ramzan Kadyrov says Chechen forces will replace Wagner in Bakhmut
Ramzan Kadyrov statement:
"I am addressing Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and creator of the Wagner PMC.
It is unpleasant for me, as for everyone who is not indifferent to the fate of our country, to hear the latest statements of Yevgeny Viktorovich, and it is doubly unpleasant that the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense does not comment or does not meet with the leadership of the Wagner PMC to make any decision or clarification. After all, Prigozhin deserves respect for the invaluable contribution of the Wagnerites to the liberation of the cities of Donbass. If there is a shortage, then it is necessary to explain, show, on the basis of which the commanders will at least correct the further tactics of the Wagner units, not relying on artillery.
I recall the experience of the Chechen units in Mariupol. When it took five tanks from the Ministry of Defense to support the infantry, we were able to provide only one, the combat crew of which left the vehicle in the very first battle. Then the tankers had to be calmed down, set up for battle and put back into the combat vehicle so that they would cover at least one position of the Azov Satanists with volleys. There were also problems with other equipment. Since the beginning of the SMO, we could not replace 30 artillery guns. I personally called Moscow, talked to the commanders, commanders, superiors. A month later the problem was solved. Yes, it didn't work on the first call. But our units did not record videos, they did not give a pleasant informational occasion to the enemy.
... By the way, filming the bodies of dead comrades for the sake of public outcry ... is wrong. Let's never do that...
In the zone of responsibility, for example, Apta Alaudinov, my dear brother, the commander of the Akhmat special forces, the deputy commander of the 2nd Army Corps of the RF Armed Forces, more than a hundred kilometers of the line of contact with the enemy. Not a day goes by that he doesn't have problems. But not once did Apty Aronovich declare this publicly via the Internet, but only through internal communication with the leadership. I note that the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff, with rare exceptions, have always met the Chechen units and helped. And misunderstandings are always present in ordinary civilian life, not to mention the war, where there is ALWAYS not enough ammunition! I really hope that Sergei Kuzhugetovich will listen to my call and an order will be given to the General Staff to go to the place and sort things out. This is the only and soldierly correct way out of the situation.
Chechen units fought side by side with the Wagnerites in the most difficult areas in Popasnaya, Severodonetsk, Lisichansk and other settlements of Donbass. Together they performed a sacred duty to the Motherland without division into nationalities or faith. The interests of the state and the security of the country must come first. And when the SVO ends, I would like all of us to be winners, every fighter, every commander, every Russian patriot. Together.
Yes, if older brother Prigozhin and "Wagner" leave, then the General Staff will lose an experienced combat unit, and his younger brother Kadyrov and "Akhmat" will come to his place in Artyomovsk. If the scenario is still like this, then our fighters are ready to advance and occupy the city. It's a matter of hours. But I would like us to take the remaining two kilometers of the city not at the cost of the lives of soldiers, but as a result of mutual understanding, support, determination of the command and fighters to fulfill the order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of Russia Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin."
U.S. Gives Ukraine Go-Ahead To Kill Putin:
0oQjRUgXWnA
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was asked about the recent drone attack on the Kremlin, and whether the United States would support an assassination attempt by Ukraine on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Blinken declined the opportunity to discourage such a course of action and claimed that Ukraine can do whatever Ukraine wants in this war — even though NATO is providing the overwhelming majority of arms and other material support, without which Ukraine would folk in a matter of hours. Guest host Aaron Maté and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss the reckless talk coming from Blinken.
The Duran weighs in about Prigozhin's video melt-down. They discuss the situation respectfully, but note (I'm sure correctly) that he must be exhausted and under the most extreme stress.
They also note that this kind of public commentary about military affairs in the middle of what is practically a full scale war (and a proxy global one at that, in which Russia's very existence is being threatened) plays right into the hands of the western media and has now reached the point of being impossible for the Kremlin to tolerate.
Dual American-Chilean national Gonzalo Lira was recently arrested by Ukraine’s secret police on charges pertaining to “wartime propaganda”, for which he faces the possibility of 5-8 years in jail.
The US Government’s silence on this incident completely contrasts with its hysteria over Wall Street Journal employee Evan Gershkovich’s arrest in Russia last month on charges of espionage after he was caught red-handed soliciting classified military-industrial information from a regional lawmaker.
Chilean journalist arrested in Ukraine
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Friday confirmed the arrest of Gonzalo Lira, a Chilean national living in Kharkov, suspecting him of pro-Russian sympathies. Lira had been previously detained in April 2022, but released after a week and ordered not to leave the city.
According to a SBU statement quoted by Ukrainian media, Lira “publicly justified the armed aggression” of Russia, denied or glorified alleged Russian war crimes, and “engaged in discrediting the top military and political leadership and the Defense Forces of our state.”
The SBU filmed Lira’s arrest by heavily armed agents, blurring out the faces of everyone involved.
He is suspected of “producing and distributing materials justifying the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, committed repeatedly.” A court ordered him jailed pending the outcome of the investigation.
The SBU has reportedly seized Lira’s computer and multiple cell phones as evidence.
Lira, 55, is a writer and filmmaker who used to work in the US. Several years ago, he moved to Kharkov, where he got married and began blogging as ‘Coach Red Pill’.
This is the second time he has been detained by the SBU. He was first arrested in April 2022, but was released after a week. No charges were pressed at the time, and Lira would not discuss the details of what happened, saying only that he was not allowed to leave Kharkov.
He blamed the US outlet Daily Beast for directing Kiev’s attention to his work, accusing the outlet of trying to get him killed. The tabloid had reported on Lira’s activities in March 2022, calling him “sleazy” and a “pro-Putin shill,” and noting its reporters had reached out to Ukrainian authorities.
While Lira kept a low profile for several weeks after his release, he eventually returned to social media and continued voicing criticism of Kiev’s policies. Since then, Ukraine has enacted laws criminalizing dissent and allowing President Vladimir Zelensky to ban opposition political parties, nationalize the media and even persecute the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for being in canonical communion with Moscow.
If you advance 100 meters along a several kilometers long front it is a significant amount. Typically there are positions of strongholds that you need to break so the enemy retreats further back and then you get a significant gain. The reason Russia is taking so long is because Ukraine has set up hundreds of bunkers to hide in and it’s difficult to push them out. Russia has to pulverize them with artillery then move in with ground forces. They have purposely avoided using their Air Force or larger bombs to prevent the war from escalating. It’s a slow grind but Ukraine will eventually surrender. What isn’t reported often is the dozens of attempts Ukraine forces have made to try to push out Russia from its positions in the Donbas, they have failed many many times using NATO-trained soldiers. Ukraine stands no chance of breaking the layers of defense that Russia has built fortifying the newly claimed territory. They would need 2-3x as many men as the Russians and it’s just not going to happen.
Can China checkmate the west in Ukraine?
FRIDAY, MAY 05, 2023 - 23:45
Originally published on Alex Krainer's Substack
Last week's telephone call between Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and China's President Xi Jinping was certainly one of the most significant events since the beginning of Russian military intervention in Ukraine. The call, as we now know, was initiated by President Zelensky himself, without consulting his handlers in the Biden administration or NATO. President Xi accepted the call but made the subtle point of conducting it through a Russian and not Ukrainian language interpreter. According to Chinese government readout of the conversation, Xi warned Zelensky not to support US policy on Taiwan, and offered to send a peace delegation to Kiev in order to help broker an end of hostilities in Ukraine.
No cards left to play
The significance of this call could be hard to overestimate, including the fact that Zelensky took the initiative without consulting his western sponsors. If he risked their wrath by calling on the Chinese president, it was because, as Scott Ritter put it, Ukraine has no cards left to play. Their much talked about spring counter offensive appears dead on arrival and there are increasing signs of mutiny in Ukraine's military ranks. Apparently, numerous officials are privately voicing opinions that they must find an off-ramp and seek a negotiated peace solution to avert the nation's total collapse.
Even Poland's Chief of the General Staff, General Rajmund Andrzejczak who was one of the western alliance’s most eager pro-Ukraine voices has lost taste for the adventure. Amid extreme casualties sustained by Ukraine in the recent artillery and missile attacks, he warned that the war does not look good for Ukraine. According to Colonel Douglas MacGregor, Andrzejczak now thinks Ukraine would need two million troops to have any hope of success with their counter offensive.
Regime officials now blame the West
In another sign of Ukraine's disaffection with the west, Zelensky's advisor Mykhailo Podolyak gave an interview after his boss's call with President Xi, in which he blamed the west for war, stating that, "The United States, unfortunately, along with other western countries encouraged Ukraine to give up nuclear and other weapons ... This was a wrong policy ... and led to a major war in Europe."
The risk of peace breaking out again turned the west (principally the British establishment) apoplectic and they immediately scrambled a high-level delegation to Kiev to stiffen the regime’s spine and to continue fighting Russia to the last Ukrainian. Recall, just over a year ago, it was UK's then Prime Minister Boris Johnson who parachuted unannounced into Kiev to warn President Zelensky not to sign any peace deal with Russia (which, at the time was brokered by the Turkye's government).
The Brits send the “give peace NO chance” delegation to Kiev
Last week it was the former MI6 chief, Sir Richard Dearlove who led the mission to Kiev. Interestingly, this delegation's visit is almost impossible to find in any news media. You can find it however, on the pages of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. The delegation brought the message of "strengthening the support of international partners for Ukraine on its path to victory," and stressing that, "we should not be afraid of Russia." Of course "we" shouldn't - it's only the ordinary Ukrainians dying and the country being destroyed, including by depleted Uranium ordnance supplied by Britain.
Another member of the "give peace no chance" delegation was the uber-warhawk and UK's Defense Committee Chair Tobias Ellwood. It is the same Tobias Ellwood who was pounding the table in a recent interview that, "we are now at war in Europe, we need to move to a war footing. We are involved in that,... we need to face Russia directly rather than leaving Ukraine to do all the work."
To be sure, the Neocon faction in the Biden Administration and the leadership of the EU and NATO are every bit as keen on seeing the hostilities continue, but the party that's played the key role in setting the agenda is the official London, which also played the key role in orchestrating the previous two world wars. As the commitment to war against Russia began to founder in Washington, it was again Boris Johnson who flew to the US, chumming up to the new Republican leadership and urging for "Western unity and support for Ukraine and what more can be done against the threat Russia poses."
It was in fact Boris Johnson who announced the coming conflict in November 2021, issuing a veiled warning to European leaders: "We hope that our friends [in Europe] may recognize that a choice is shortly coming between mainlining ever more Russian hydrocarbons in giant new pipelines and sticking up for Ukraine and championing the cause of peace and stability."
At that same time, Britain sent additional troops and equipment to Poland and announced that the UK would enhance its permanent presence of troops and tanks in Germany. Shortly thereafter, the outgoing head of the UK chief of Defence Staff, General Sir Nick Carter stated that the UK military would have to be ready for war with Russia. UK's former Defense Minister, Sir Gerald Howarth also spoke to Sky News to suggest that NATO should go into Ukraine, "boots on the ground," because Ukraine MUST win the war.
The Chinese - will they try to extricate Zelensky?
I very much doubt that the Chinese leadership is naive about brokering a peace deal in current circumstances and I suspect that the proposed peace delegation would be more like a military intelligence cleanup crew whose role would be to protect Zelensky and try to extricate him from his political, business and intelligence entanglements with the west.
Liberating Zelensky from the clutches of NATO / CIA / MI6 clutches could make him a hugely important asset for the Russian and the Chinese side. Chinese peace delegation's role could be to identify the key exponents of the western control in Ukraine and buying them out or eliminating them in some way. I ventured to propose this idea in a recent CryptoRich podcast with Tom Luongo and Alexander Mercouris.
Mr. Mercouris thought that the former Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev might have corroborated this idea in a cryptic message on his Telegram channel, saying that it was necessary to find and eliminate the most dangerous people in Zelensky regime. It is all but certain that Russia and China are now coordinating their strategy on Ukraine, which is already crawling with Russian intelligence assets.
Incidentally, I highly recommend the above mentioned podcast as the events led to a very lively and interesting conversation.
The events will be extremely interesting to observe as the Ukraine war may have entered into its final stages. Hopefully it will end soon, and if China somehow manages to broker a peace deal, it will almost certainly follow up with large investments into Ukraine, integrating it into its Belt and Road initiative (BRI). Since 2019, China has already been Ukraine's #1 trade partner, accounting for 14.4% of imports and over 15% of exports). Ukraine had in fact already joined the BRI in 2014 and a BRI trade and investment center was established in Kiev in 2018.
I drafted this article for my Wednesday, 3 May TrendCompass report but before I could publish it here, the saga took another surreal twist…
Drone attack on the Kremlin: is Zelensky the real target?
Last night’s apparent attempt to assassinate Vladimir Putin with a drone may have been the consequence of the recent events. The assassination attempt itself had a snowball’s chance in hell of achieving anything much, so why launch it? Speaking from Finland, Zelensky himself denied that this was a Ukrainian attack. In a way, he might be telling the truth.
While the drone was probably launched from Ukraine, it was most likely a NATO orchestrated attack aimed not at Putin but at Zelensky. I’m guessing, but it may have been discussed at the meeting of the western “give peace no chance” delegation and the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine with Mr. Z entirely out of the loop?
In calling Xi Jinping, Volodymyr Zelensky has clearly defied his western handlers and in this, he might have become a liability. If the Chinese or the Russians managed to extricate him from Kiev, he could become valuable witness to events that had led up to this war and a massive liability to the western war party. Eliminating him while credibly blaming the Kremlin could achieve two important objectives: getting rid of the man who knows too much and also turning him into a hero of Ukrainian nationhood and anti-Russian resistance.
We might just witness further surreal twists over the coming days.
Poland’s Top General Warns War Situation ‘Does Not Look Good’ For Ukraine: Russia Much Better Positioned to Sustain Efforts
amid ongoing fighting in Eastern Ukraine, and reports of extreme casualties among Ukrainian forces, Polish Armed Forces Chief of General Staff Rajmund Andrzejczak has warned that that Kiev’s position appears to be fast declining. “War always was, is, and there is nothing to indicate otherwise – a matter of politics, and in its determinants has a substantial number of economic factors: finance, infrastructure issues, social issues, technology, food production and a whole set of problems that must be put into this box to understand this conflict… When I look at the conflict in Ukraine, I mainly see it through these political lenses, and unfortunately it does not look good,” he stated. This was primarily on the basis that there was “nothing” to indicate Russia would be unable to sustain its war effort, and that Western economic warfare efforts had failed to prevent this. “Those financial instruments which it had before the conflict, the dynamics of spending, the effectiveness of sanctions, and the whole complex economic situation speak to the fact that Russia will have the money for this conflict,” he stated. This was despite Western countries having seized over $600 billion worth of Russian assets - a move slammed by Moscow as illegal. By contrast Ukraine “has huge financial problems,” with Andrzejczak warning: “We know how much the country needs per month. We know what American assistance amounts to, that of the entire collective West amounts to. We also know what Polish assistance is in this area, because we are the second-largest donor and should probably be a major inspiration for others. The speed of attrition in the financial area is, in my opinion, unfavourable, unfortunately.”
The Polish Chief of General Staff further added that there was little indication that millions of Ukrainians who had left the country would be ready or willing to return home to rebuild, lamenting that many Western leaders failed to realise how far Ukraine was from winning the war. The Western Bloc, he said, “just doesn’t have the ammunition, industry is not ready not only to send equipment to Ukraine, but to replenish our own stocks, which are melting. This awareness is not the same there as it is here on the Vistula River, and it must be communicated firmly, without an aesthetic, to everyone and in all forums, wherever possible, which is what I’m doing.” There has been a stark contrast in reporting on the Ukraine war in the West, and the reports from the frontlines in the country including from Western combatants deployed to major hotspots. A notable recent example has been reports of a ‘meat grinder’ in the city of Bakhmut, a term which reports from the ground used to refer to the extreme casualties taken by Ukrainian and allied forces.
One such source was Konstantin Goncharov, a former Deutsche Welle journalist from Kiev who joined the military, who stated on February 28 after time on the frontlines: “In Bakhmut of course its just a meat grinder. Many recruits who go there [pause] its a lottery for their lives.” He further elaborated that the “intensity of fighting and artillery shelling was colossal, even the people who lived through parts of the hybrid war from 2014 in the Donbas.” Former U.S. Marine Troy Offenbecker similarly referred to “a lot of casualties. The life expectancy is around four hours on the frontline,” and was among multiple sources to highlight the issue. In Western reporting, however, the term ‘meat grinder’ was instead used almost exclusively to claim extreme losses for Russian forces rather than Ukrainian ones in contrast to the reports from the ground. While Ukrainian officials have themselves referred to extreme losses, highlighting that these are being concealed until the war ends, attrition for Ukraine’s arsenals, and particularly its ground based air defence network critical to keeping the Russian Air Force at bay, have fast become an even more serious issue.
Another forecast from the West is that negotiations to end the war in Ukraine will begin before the end of the year.
This time from former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
“Now that China has entered into negotiations, everything will fall into place. I think by the end of the year we will be talking about negotiation processes and even real negotiations,” Kissinger said.
Recall that earlier in a similar spirit , an article was published in the Wall Street Journal. It also noted that negotiations with Russia could begin by the end of the year, and China could become one of the possible mediators.
