🇷🇺🇺🇦 South Donetsk Direction: Battles in the East of Kostiantynivka and Russian Forces Reaching the T-05-24 Highway

Situation as of 5:00 PM on August 13, 2024

In the South Donetsk direction, Russian forces have already reached the key T-05-24 highway in several places, which was used to supply the AFU garrison in Vuhledar. At the same time, assault groups of the Russian Armed Forces have achieved significant success in Kostiantynivka, overcoming the defensive lines of Ukrainian formations in the southeastern part of the settlement.

After prolonged battles on the approaches to Kostiantynivka, Russian forces were able to breach the enemy's defenses and advance into the settlement itself. Russian units took advantage of the terrain features and attacked the AFU positions on the southern outskirts of the village, consolidating their positions on the eastern part of Chkalova Street. Around August 10, assault groups drove Ukrainian formations out of positions on Shevchenko, Mira and Shakhtarska streets on the eastern outskirts of the settlement.

After that, Russian units began systematically pushing Ukrainian formations towards the central part of the settlement. Despite the resistance of the AFU, by the evening of August 12, the advance assault groups were able to dislodge the enemy from several more positions and "pull up" their right flank, reaching the left bank of the Sukhyi Yaly River. The enemy regularly uses strike drones, as evidenced by footage from objective control.

To the southeast of Vodyane, fierce battles are raging on the approaches to the T-05-24 highway. After several months of fighting in the Ikryana and Solenenka Gullies, Russian forces were able to approach and take the transport artery under fire control in several places. This makes it almost impossible for the enemy to use it to supply the garrisons of Vuhledar and Kostiantynivka. Further advancement in this area will eventually allow the Russian Armed Forces to outflank the AFU units in Kostiantynivka and its environs from the south and take the C-05-11-33 Katerynivka - Kostiantynivka highway under fire control, significantly complicating the supply of the latter's garrison.

However, to implement this scenario, Russian forces will have to overcome the enemy's defenses northwest of the highway and liberate Vodyane. Ukrainian formations, understanding the prospects opening up for the command of the Russian Armed Forces after the capture of this village, will strive to stop the advance of Russian troops in this area and will likely use significant forces for this purpose.

The control of Ukrainian formations over the territories of the "Yuzhnodonbaska No. 1" and No. 3 mines also complicates the liberation of Vodyane. The shafts of both mines allow enemy observers to monitor dozens of kilometers around using both visual observation and specialized cameras. Air strikes using various types of ammunition are regularly carried out on the territory of the mines, but it is difficult to destroy such capital structures even with air bombs.

He made the statement when opening a meeting about the situation on the Russian border.

"It is now clear why the Kiev regime refused our proposals to return to the plan for peaceful settlement," Putin said. "The enemy, with the help of its Western masters - it is doing their bidding, and the West is waging war against us using Ukrainians - <...> seeks to improve its negotiating position in the future."

"But what kind of negotiations can we even talk about with people who indiscriminately strike civilians, civilian infrastructure or try to create threats to nuclear power facilities," the president went on to say. "What can we even talk about with them?"

The adviser to the chief of staff of the Ukrainian presidential office, Mikhail Podolyak, said Ukraine could improve its negotiating position with the help of an operation on Russian territory. The European edition of Politico said the attack in Russia’s Kursk Region took place with the approval of the West.

Ukrainian forces started a major attack on the Kursk Region on August 6. Missile attack alerts have been issued repeatedly in the region since then. According to the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, more than 8,000 people have been evacuated from border areas over the past day due to Ukrainian attacks, and more than 6,000 people have been placed in temporary accommodation centers.

Hospitals have admitted 69 people that were injured in Ukrainian shelling of the Kursk Region, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said. Of them, 17 are in serious condition. Two killed, child among 29 injured in Ukrainian attack
Two people have been killed and a child is among 29 injured after a Ukrainian cluster munition exploded near a bus in the city of Lisichansk in Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), local authorities have reported.

According to a message posted by the head of the LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, on his Telegram channel on Tuesday, “Ukrainian nationalists today attacked Lisichansk, using a cluster munition.”

The city administration also posted on its own Telegram channel that the shelling had occurred near a bus stop at around 11:45am.

LPR Health Minister Natalya Pashenko stated that one passenger had been killed at the scene, while another man died in hospital after sustaining a wound to his heart that was “incompatible with life.” At least 18 others, including a 12-year-old child, have been hospitalized in critical condition.

Doctors from several other localities in the LPR rushed to help the wounded in the city, Pashenko added.

Russia has repeatedly accused Ukrainian forces of firing artillery and missiles indiscriminately, including weapons provided by their Western backers, with the attacks resulting in civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure in Donbass.

Earlier this month, Pasechnik said Kiev’s military had launched at least eight ATACMS and four Storm Shadow missiles at the LPR’s capital of Lugansk. While Russian air defenses intercepted at least four of the incoming rockets, the attack apparently resulted in damage to a fuel depot and several residential buildings.

Around the same time, Donetsk and Makeyevka in the neighboring Donetsk People’s Republic were also targeted by Ukrainian shelling.

Chemical weapons used by Ukraine likely of Western origin – Moscow
An investigation into a reported chemical weapons attack by Ukraine in Kursk Region has found that the munitions used likely originated in the West, a senior Russian military official has said.

On Monday, acting Governor Aleksey Smirnov reported that a Russian repair crew had come under fire from Ukrainian forces and suffered from poisoning. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, who heads the chemical and biological defense forces, shared the preliminary results of an investigation conducted by his troops.

”Those were smoke munitions. The smoke-producing agent is typical for munitions used by the US and Germany in terms of its composition… It is based on hexachloroethane and zinc oxide,” he told the news outlet Zvezda TV.

White smoke produced by the mixture of the two compounds is mildly toxic and has a range of military and public-order applications.

Kirillov said the military and the Health Ministry had organized the collection of samples at the site of the reported attack in line with the requirements of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). A Russian lab accredited by the international watchdog is studying them, he said.

Russian officials have some unanswered questions regarding the additives used in the munitions, the general said, “but we have time and we are not revealing those yet.”

The force commanded by Kirillov, which is responsible for protecting troops and civilians from weapons of mass destruction, has identified around 400 incidents in which chemical weapons were used by Ukraine since hostilities with Russia started in 2022. Most cases involved chemical agents typically used by police, but some posed a lethal threat.

”There were cases in which toxins were used, which could only have been synthesized in the US, because no other nation’s industry can produce them,” he said.

Kirillov said the OPCW had not taken action in response to Russian complaints beyond its obligation to share the allegations with the public. There were “no investigations, no inquiries, nothing was done.”

He also addressed Russian concerns that Kiev could build a so-called ‘dirty bomb’ – a chemical explosive device with a shell of radioactive material, which is designed to contaminate a large area. “I believe they have one,” he said.

Foreign fighters involved in Kursk assault – Ukrainian soldier
A Ukrainian soldier who was captured in Kursk Region amid Kiev’s ongoing cross-border offensive has claimed that foreign mercenaries are fighting for Ukraine on Russian soil.

Footage of an interview with the detainee was released by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) on Monday. The agency claimed that the man shown in the footage was captured with the help of local residents in Kursk Region. The Ukrainian identified himself as a 26-year-old member of his country's 80th Air Assault Brigade, which is taking part in the offensive.

Ruslan Poltoratsky, as he introduced himself, said he first heard foreign radio chatter when crossing the Russian border and initially thought it was some kind of interference.

“They spoke in English, Polish, maybe French. I did not understand them, called on the radio to repeat, and only heard gibberish in response,” he said.

He later concluded that the communications were local, since Ukrainian military officials were responding.

“There was something about houses and gunshots in the background,” he claimed.

Poltoratsky also mentioned that a brigade “made up of those who used to be in jail” was taking part in the Kursk Region offensive. He was apparently referring to a unit composed of convicts who volunteered in exchange for early release from prison.

Ukraine has been using foreign fighters to bolster its military since the early days of the conflict with Russia, creating an ‘International Legion’ for volunteers. Moscow has described them as mercenaries and has accused Western nations of facilitating the recruitment of their citizens with combat experience.

The practice of embedding foreign fighters into the Ukrainian military predates the ongoing hostilities, as evidenced by a group known as the Georgian Legion. It features Georgian citizens in its ranks and was created in 2014. The unit is also in Kursk Region, according to a source cited last week by military news outlet The War Zone.

The NATO NeoNazi regime in Kiev is going for broke, as its Third Reich forbears did during World War Two. This time around, though, the fascists have a nuclear terrorist card to play.

As in the endgame of World War Two, the Nazi Wehrmacht tried to break out in Kursk as a way to divert from battlefield losses elsewhere on the crumbling Eastern Front. The gamble proved futile then and looks like repeating disastrously today.

Vladimir Zelensky, the illegitimate puppet president of Ukraine, is out of troops and money. His insufferable begging routine for more weapons and money has become played out. His country is set to default on eye-watering debts to international creditors. Russia's military advances in the Donbass - formerly eastern Ukraine now part of the Russian Federation - have succeeded in pushing the Kiev regime to the brink of collapse despite the latter receiving hundreds of billions of dollars worth of NATO weaponry.

Zelensky, who is still clinging on to power nearly six months after he cancelled elections, senses the end is nigh for his corrupt regime and its war racket. With over 600,000 dead soldiers and remaining civilians hiding or fleeing in fear of conscription, the ex-comedian throws the dice with a few brigades despatched on a suicide cross-border raid on Russia's Kursk region.

"The Kursk maneuver could herald the end of Ukraine militarily," remarked Gustav Gressel, a former Austrian defense ministry official, in an interview with Der Spiegel.

Gressel suggested that the Ukrainian brigades represent the final reserves for the NATO-backed Kiev regime. Once they are wiped out by the superior Russian forces then there will be nothing left for the Kiev side.

If Kiev's other objective is to divert Russian forces from Donbass, that doesn't seem to be working. Russian forces continue to make gains in the direction of Donbass - the main battlefield of this conflict.

So, what is the Zelensky junta playing at? It's a terror tantrum to try to show his NATO sponsors that their proxy regime is still worth backing. The wasting of Ukrainian military lives is a desperate "working off loans for his masters", as Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova put it.

Sending his people to die is Zelensky's attempt to show his regime is still "liquid". But it's a final act of desperation. When this futile foray into Kursk is spent then it's over.

As part of the final desperate act, the nuclear terrorism card is also being played - again.

While the incursion in Kursk is going on, the Ukrainian side has tried to attack the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant and the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. The ZNPP has come under constant shelling from the Armed Forces of Ukraine enabled with U.S.-made HIMARS missiles and other NATO weapons since Russia took over the civilian power plant - the largest in Europe - soon after the conflict erupted in February 2022. Russia took control at an earlier stage precisely because it anticipated that if it didn't, the Kiev regime would use it as a false flag provocation regardless of the radiological contamination of Europe.

Reasons:

🔹 The West feared a complete failure. Attempts to distance themselves from the provocation in the first days were associated with the risks of failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces already at the initial stage. 🔻 Reconsideration of relations. The prospects for dialogue with the US on strategic security issues are becoming extremely vague. It is rather strange to discuss strategic weapons, preventing nuclear weapons in space with a party that supports, sponsors and directly develops attacks on your territory.

🔻 Change of assessments. In the near future, there should be a global change in approaches, assessments and semantic contours around the role of the West in the conflict in Ukraine. Now it is not about supporting Ukraine, but about supporting an act of aggression against Russia.

Localized fighting continues in the Kursk region, no enemy advances are recorded - Ukrainian resources are posting footage from Russian villages that were captured back in the first days of the invasion. What’s known so far about the fighting around Russia’s Kursk region?

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost up to 270 soldiers and 16 armored vehicles in the Kursk region over the past 24 hours, the Russian Ministry of Defense has stated.

Here are the latest updates on fighting in the area:

▪️The losses of the Ukrainian military on August 13 included two tanks, a Stryker armored personnel carrier, 13 armored combat vehicles, as well as 10 vehicles and a 122-mm D-30 howitzer.

▪️Russian forces prevented Kiev's attempts to break through in the areas of Skrylevka, Levshinka, Semenovka, Alekseevsky, and Kamyshny.

▪️Units of the Russian Armed Forces are in control of the region’s town of Sudzha, with daily clashes there under way, commander of the Akhmat special forces Apti Alaudinov told Russian media.

▪️He also said that Kiev planned to seize the Kursk nuclear power plant in Kurchatov on August 11 and use it as an ultimatum to start negotiations with Moscow.

In his video update for yesterday, Alexander Mercouris makes a very smart guess as to how come the Kursk incursion came about. Starting at 37:09, he suggests the following‚ which seems entirely plausible and maybe even likely:

The Russians learned about this Ukrainian plan as far back as 2 months ago.
They contacted the US straight away, and the US gave firm assurances that this would not happen.
Of course, the US immediately told the Ukrainians about the Russians' foreknowledge.
This reassured the Russians that this planned incursion would not take place.
But some Russian military commanders decided (or were ordered) to take precautions nonetheless, even though they felt this might not be necessary.
The Ukrainians launched their incursion anyway.
This would fully explain Putin's anger, and also the Chinese anger (who would also have been told by the Ukrainians that no such thing was planned.)

RUSSIAN ARMY REPELS MORE UKRAINIAN ATTACKS IN KURSK (VIDEOS)

The Russian military had repelled several attacks by Kiev forces in the direction of Kursk, the Ministry of Defense announced on August 15.

In a briefing, the ministry said that the Sever Group of Forces repelled an attack by Ukraine’s 115th Mechanized Brigade near the settlement of Kremyanoye.

It added that more attacks were thwarted when the group launched strikes against the 82nd Air Assault Brigade south of Kremyanoye and of the 80th Air Assault Brigade west of the settlement Russkaya Konopelka. Ukrainian losses amounted to 90 troops, five American-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and six armored fighting vehicles.

The Sever Group of Forces also routed the Ukrainian formations and restored the control over the settlement of Krupets, pre the ministry.

In addition, a series of strikes by warplanes and drones foiled Ukrainian attempts to break through to the Russian territory close to the settlements of Varvarovka, Safonovka, Sheptukhovka, Kauchuk, Alekseyevskoye and Matveyevka.

There are far better reasons *not* to say anything for three days or a week. The results will speak for themselves.

It is like the lack of an "instant" attack by Iran in the wake of what happened to Haniyeh.

Nothing is really there for us to grab onto what's happening on the spur of the moment.

Ukraine is like CNN, "fast and first, not true" It is the strategy I call "say something". Russia and most Islamic speakers don't have this twitch. In fact, it has always seemed to me one of the strongest signs of immaturity.

Kiev’s incursion has given Moscow the opportunity to destroy strategic reserves of troops and weapons.

Ukraine was forced to expend some of their most well-trained soldiers and advanced technology in a failed effort to capture the Kursk nuclear power plant.

Ritter noted that Moscow quickly responded to the attack, taking the opportunity to destroy Ukrainian supply lines running from the Sumy region.

Russia has also neutralized some of the regime’s most well-trained troops and high-tech NATO weaponry, such as a British Challenger tank, US M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. The ongoing conflict against the Western client state has served as a showcase for Russian defense technology, which has fared well against Ukraine’s dwindling supplies of expensive NATO weaponry.
“They gave it to us. They handed it to us,” said Ritter of Kiev’s strategic reserves of troops and armaments. “The Russians are winning. The Ukrainians are dying. And there's nothing Ukraine will have to replace these troops.”

“These troops have been trained and prepared for well over a year and a half. These are NATO equivalent troops. Many of them are NATO troops, sheep-dipped Polish troops, sheep-dipped French troops, American mercenaries recruited as soon as they leave the active duty of the United States Armed Forces… This is a NATO unit, literally a NATO unit that was sent into Ukraine and the Russians are destroying it. That's the reality of what's going on in Kursk right now.”

“Ukraine is going to lose another 30 percent or more of its territory when this is done because Russia has basically determined that Ukraine can't be trusted, the West can't be trusted, that Russia can never believe in the notion of a Ukraine willing to live in peace with its Russian neighbor," Ritter claimed.

“So Russia is going to destroy Ukraine. And, sadly, that is probably the way this war is going to end.”

What is known as of 7:00 PM on August 16, 2024

In Kursk Region, Ukrainian formations continue attempts to advance deeper into Russian territory. Operational-tactical aviation and artillery units of the Russian Armed Forces strike at the locations of Ukrainian personnel and equipment.

Among other things, the positions of the AFU in the border areas of Sumy Region are being shelled. For example, in Osoyevka, Lancet UAV operators struck at Ukrainian formations that had stopped near a minibus on the street.

NATO member gives Ukraine green light to use its weapons in Russia
Ukraine has been given approval to use Canadian-donated tanks and armored vehicles on Russian soil, according to a statement by Canada’s Department of National Defense on Thursday. Kiev is currently waging a large-scale incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region.

Ottawa has donated to Kiev a total of eight German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks as well several dozen armored combat vehicles, hundreds of armored patrol vehicles, and several M-777 howitzers. Last month, the Canadian government also announced an additional $367 million military aid package for Kiev.

“Ukrainians know best how to defend their homeland, and we’re committed to supporting their capacity,” Canadian Defense Department spokesperson Andree-Anne Pulin told the media on Thursday.

“Canada places no geographic restrictions on the use of military equipment that we donate to Ukraine,” Pulin added.

It is unclear how much, if any, donated Canadian equipment is currently being used in Kiev’s incursion into Kursk Region, which it launched on August 6, marking the largest Ukrainian cross-border offensive since the outbreak of the conflict in 2022.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has reported that the Ukrainian advance has since been halted and that Kiev has suffered considerable losses during the operation. Moscow has estimated that Ukraine has lost some 2,600 troops and hundreds of pieces of military hardware units, including 37 tanks and 32 armored personnel carriers since the start of the offensive.

Moscow has shared several videos of Russian forces destroying Western-supplied equipment operated by Ukraine in Kursk Region, including US-provided HIMARS systems, Stryker combat vehicles and Bradley APCs.

According to Kursk acting governor Aleksey Smirnov, some 28 residential areas are currently under Ukrainian control. He has also reported that 12 civilians have been killed and over 120 have been wounded during the incursion. As many as 120,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes and the fate of nearly 2,000 people is unknown, according to the governor.

Moscow has condemned Kiev’s offensive as a “terrorist” operation and a “large-scale provocation.” Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukraine of “indiscriminately” targeting civilians, residential areas and ambulances and stressed that no peace talks can be possible while it continues such attacks.

Russian officials have also repeatedly condemned the West for continuing to provide military support to Kiev, arguing that the Ukraine conflict is effectively a proxy war being waged by NATO against Russia, in which Ukrainians serve as ‘cannon fodder.’

Nikolay Patrushev dismissed the US Department of State’s claims of non-involvement into the matter

MOSCOW, August 16. /TASS/. Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s borderline region of Kursk was planned with the participation of NATO and Western special services, and was prompted by Kiev’s realization of its imminent collapse, Russian presidential aide Nikolay Patrushev said.

"It was the West who brought the criminal junta to power in Urkaine. NATO countries sent weapons and military instructors to Ukraine, they continue to provide them with intelligence data and they control actions of neo-Nazi groups," he said in an interview with the Izvestia daily. "The operation in the Kursk Region was also planned with the participation of NATO and Western special services."

"This criminal undertaking was prompted by the neo-Nazi Kiev regime’s realization of its looming imminent collapse," the official added.

Patrushev dismissed the US Department of State’s claims of non-involvement into the matter.

Ukrainian forces started a major attack on the Kursk Region on August 6. Missile attack warnings have been issued repeatedly in the region since then, and the government declared a federal-level emergency there. Most residents were temporarily resettled from the border areas and are now out of harm’s way, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said. More than 720 people have been evacuated over the past day alone, according to the ministry.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Kiev has already lost up to 2,640 troops, 37 tanks, 32 armored personnel carriers since the beginning of the hostilities on the Kursk direction. The operation on elimination of Ukrainian troops continues.

KURSK, August 16. /TASS/. Ukrainian troops are targeting motor cars used to evacuate civilians from the Kursk Region’s Sudzha district, the district’s head Alexander Bogachev told TASS.

"We are using armored cash-in-transit vehicles to evacuate people, since they can protect people [against bullets and shrapnel]. But Ukrainian troops are seeking to destroy them," he said.

According to Bogachev, the situation in the district is difficult. Evacuation is resumed during periods of lull. "We have evacuated all those who wanted this. There are people who simply refuse to leave their homes and we spare no effort to persuade them that this is necessary," he said.

Zelensky's "only option left" is a nuclear provocation

Russian political analyst Rostislav Ishschenko suggested this week that a nuclear provocation would be the only option left for Ukraine and its Western sponsors, since a provocation involving biological weapons can easily spiral out of control and a chemical weapons provocation lost its “potential” after being used too often by the US in Syria.

According to Ishchenko, Ukraine is unlikely to use a dirty bomb for this sort of provocation to implicate Russia as trying to accuse a country that controls one of the largest nuclear arsenals in the world of using such “ersatz-weapon” would simply be absurd.

Thus, he suggests, this provocation could involve “American tactical low-yield” warheads detonated in one of Ukraine’s large cities - Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk or Odessa – in order to blame this attack on Russia.

“This nuclear strike would cause death and destruction sufficient to make a most negative impression on the world,” Ishchenko said.

Another possibility, the analyst noted, would be using several half-kiloton warheads to destroy the dams and bridges on the Dnepr River, in order to claim that Russia thus tried to cut off the Ukrainian forces on the left bank of Dnepr.

It is pretty close to that. We heard recently that "Israel doesn't need spies" because the phones of Hamas commanders make them easy to track. So, yes, phones and/or videos are, in that sense, betraying the user as soon as you start them.

On the other hand, Israeli politicians were recently given satellite phones. So when you change tech to something less digitized, you have greater freedom.

I would say it's a really bad idea for "folks at home" to make instant judgments based on "instant news". Especially since, from sides like Ukraine, the rapid posting is often shuffled with fake pictures and stories. They would make better use of the rapid access "surrender channel".

Most likely so, it is a big step up from "Russian people of the Donbass". Anyone who was indecisive about the Donbass problems has almost certainly switched to defense mode here. This is not true in America. For instance when our New York was "attacked", I saw it as a foreign plebiscite, not something I would lift a finger for. Regardless of what really happened, I, at least, did not go into any territorial defense mode because of it.

I don't see how Biden makes sense calling it some troublesome situation for Putin, when, in fact, the reality is practically opposite that of course "everyone" has been galvanized to defend Russia itself.

Umm - yes, you could say that! .

So many of my friends and associates (as well as myself) have been subjected to many such kinds of "cancelling" over the past twenty-plus years, that I have lost count. It is a very long time since discourse began to be controlled in mainstream media (the late 1960s was the beginning of "woke"), and influential dissent has been almost suppressed by now - we are now in the terminal "mopping-up phase".

While I much value The Judge's channel, and regard him as a basically decent man - it is also clear that he does not yet realise the depth and extent of The Problem in The World now - and he continues to adhere to something like the ideology of US "classical liberals" (or libertarians) of the 1950s (or maybe the Reagan era).

The Judge's world view has many and deep problems of its own IMO (I regard it as ultimately non-spiritual and materialistic), and was anyway too weak to prevent the situation we now suffer. Free Speech never was free, and this issue is a red herring.

There always was, is and should-be a [I]values-framework for public discourse.

The real problem is not that we have a values-framework applied to speech and writing, but that the framework we actually have is actively evil.

You don’t actually have to be a party to a war, nor do you have to be in the military to commit a warcrime. If you simply breach the laws of warfare during a war—be that your own war or the wars of others—you become a criminal under international law.

Kursk: the Ukrainian Army’s Last Major Offensive

The captured Ukraine army equipment includes a mix of British gas masks, Soviet-era anti-tank grenade launchers, American automatic grenade launchers, hand grenades, and a haphazard assortment of small arms ammunition.

Repeated observations have noted Kiev's use of unique and rare equipment models, previously kept away from frontline engagements, during the assault on the Kursk region.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces' brigades appear to be formed under varying organizational models, resulting in a patchwork of different equipment and personal weapons.

As a consequence, the Ukrainian units currently operating in the Kursk region are employing at least three different intermediate calibers for automatic small arms, two distinct rifle calibers for sniper rifles (excluding "heavy" sniper teams), and an uncountable variety of machine gun calibers across various systems.

While Ukraine receives substantial support from the West, potentially averting any ammunition shortages, the logistical burden of maintaining and resupplying such a diverse arsenal in the Kursk region presents a significant challenge.

As we know, logistics is the backbone of warfare, and sustaining the combat effectiveness of the Ukrainian forces in this region is proving to be a logistical nightmare.

Adding to the logistical nightmare faced by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, there is now the crippling news that the German government has decided to halt all financial and military aid to Ukraine.

This decision follows WSJ revelations that Zelensky himself orchestrated the attack on the Nord Stream pipeline, a critical piece of German infrastructure.

With Germany's withdrawal of support, the Ukrainian military is now facing a severe depletion of resources, exacerbating their already precarious situation and further jeopardizing their ability to sustain prolonged operations in what could be their last major offensive.

“As you know, Russian law enforcement agencies have initiated a criminal case against Italian journalists for illegally crossing the Russian border.

In my opinion, this is not the biggest crime committed by the employees of the Rai TV channel. What has rightfully sparked public outrage is that Western media continue to engage in the deliberate rehabilitation of Ukrainian neo-Nazis and the revision of the Nuremberg Tribunal’s decisions. Earlier, correspondent Ilario Pianerelli was already noted for his reports on Bucha and the deceased neo-Nazi from the banned "Right Sector" in Russia. Now he has reached a new level—or rather, sunk to a new low—by conducting a video interview with a Ukrainian serviceman wearing a cap with the insignia of the SS division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler."

For those who don't know, this was an elite formation created from Hitler's personal guard, later expanded into the 1st SS Panzer Corps. Based on materials from the Extraordinary State Commission for the Establishment and Investigation of the Atrocities Committed by the Nazi-Fascist Invaders, the "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler" division was included in the list of Wehrmacht and SS units that committed war crimes on Soviet territory. The division participated in the Battle of Kursk, made its mark in Italy, and fought against the Allies in Normandy and the Ardennes. At the Nuremberg Trials, the entire SS organization, including the "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler," was declared criminal.

It’s possible that next time, Pianerelli will feature a Ukrainian Nazi wearing the insignia of the SS division "Reichsführer SS." This would be more symbolic for the Italian audience on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the tragedy in the village of Marzabotto, south of Bologna. Between September 29 and October 5, 1944, in retaliation for partisan and Resistance attacks on German soldiers, the punitive forces of this division killed between 770 and 1,830 civilians (of whom 155 were under 10 years old, 95 were between 10 and 16, 142 were over 60, 316 were women, and five were priests).

Italian media increasingly resemble the NSDAP's organ, the "Völkischer Beobachter."

MOSCOW, August 18. /TASS/. Over 1,700 people were evacuated from border areas of the Kursk Region in 24 hours, a source in the press service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry told TASS.

"In 24 hours, actions to evacuate residents of border areas were carried out in four municipal districts of the region. More than 1,700 people left for safe regions on their own or in organized groups," the source said.

Around 10,000 people, including 3,000 children, are in 174 emergency shelters in 24 regions across Russia.

The Ukrainian armed forces lost over 300 troops and 27 armored vehicles, including six tanks, in the Kursk direction in 24 hours, with the enemy’s total losses since the hostility started in the Kursk border area surpassing 3,460 troops, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

"In 24 hours, the Ukrainian armed forces lost over 300 troops and 27 armored units, including six tanks, an infantry fighting vehicle, two armored fighting vehicles, 18 armored combat vehicles, as well as four cars, an MLRS launcher and two engineering equipment units, including a combat engineer vehicle," the report said.

Overall, the enemy has lost over 3,460 troops, 50 tanks, 25 infantry fighting vehicles, 45 armored fighting vehicles, 262 armored combat vehicles, 115 cars, five air defense systems, seven multiple rocket launchers, including three HIMARS systems and one MLRS system, 25 field branch artillery weapons, four electronic warfare stations, four engineering equipment units, including two combat engineer vehicles and one UR-77 mine-clearing vehicle since Kiev launched a massive attack on the Kursk Region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry’s data.

MOSCOW, August 17. /TASS/. Russian air defenses destroyed 10 HIMARS rockets, two Hammer bombs and 35 Ukrainian drones over the past 24 hours, the Defense Ministry said.

"The air defenses downed two French-made Hammer guided aerial bombs, 10 US-made HIMARS rockets and 35 drones, including 10 outside the special military operation zone," the statement said.

Battlegroup Center

The central battlegroup has repelled an attack by Ukraine’s Lyut assault brigade and defeated six enemy brigades, wiping out up to 420 enemy servicemen over the past 24 hours, the military said.

"The battlegroup Center occupied more favorable lines, defeated Ukraine’s 32nd, 53rd, 100th, 150th mechanized, 68th jaeger brigades and the 111th territorial defense brigade near Toretsk, Artyomovo, Novgorodskoye, Zhelannoye, Kalinovo and Novoyekonomicheskoe of the Donetsk People's Republic. The counterattack of the Lyut assault brigade of the Ukrainian National Police was repelled," the statement said.

Battlegroup North

The northern battlegroup has defeated four Ukrainian brigades in the Kharkov Region, eliminating over 150 enemy servicemen, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"In the Volchansk and Liptsovsk areas, the battlegroup North defeated the manpower and equipment of Ukraine’s 43rd mechanized, 82nd, 92nd assault brigades and the 36th marine brigade near Liptsy, Izbitskoye, Bely Kolodez and Volchansk in the Kharkov Region. A counterattack by an assault group of the 57th motorized infantry brigade was repelled," the ministry said.

According to it, the enemy's losses amounted to more than 150 servicemen, four vehicles, a US-made 155mm M777 howitzer, two 122mm D-30 howitzers, Polonez and Anklav-N electronic warfare stations and Plastun electronic reconnaissance complex.

Battlegroup West

The western battlegroup wiped out up to 580 Ukrainian servicemen and destroyed three US-made MaxxPro armored fighting vehicles, the ministry said.

"The battlegroup West took more favorable lines and positions, defeated Ukraine’s 14th, 30th, 44th, 67th mechanized brigades, the 110th and 117th territorial defense brigades near Sinkovka, Petropavlovka, Tabayevka of the Kharkov Region, Stelmakhovka, Nevskoye of the Lugansk People's Republic and Torskoye of the Donetsk People's Republic. Russian forces repelled two counterattacks by assault groups of the 116th mechanized and 44th airmobile brigades," the ministry said.

Battlegroup East

The eastern battlegroup has improved its frontline positions over the past 24 hours, defeated the enemy's two brigades' manpower and equipment, and repelled one counterattack, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"The battlegroup East improved its frontline positions, defeated the manpower and equipment of Ukraine’s 58th motorized infantry brigade and the 123rd territorial defense brigade near Prechistovka and Neskuchnoye of the Donetsk People's Republic. Russian forces also repelled a counterattack by an assault group of the 72nd mechanized brigade. The Ukrainian armed forces lost more than 105 servicemen, eight vehicles and a 152mm Msta-B howitzer," the statement said.

Battlegroup South

The southern battlegroup wiped out up to 680 Ukrainian servicemen in the Donetsk People's Republic over the past 24 hours, the military reported.

"The battlegroup South also improved tactical positions, defeating the manpower and equipment of Ukraine’s 23rd, 54th mechanized, 56th, 59th motorized infantry, 144th infantry, 10th mountain assault, 46th and 81st airmobile brigades near Serebryanka, Seversk, Ivano-Daryevka, Grigorovka, Chasov Yar, Krasnogorovka, Maximilianovka and Konstantinovka of the Donetsk People's Republic," the statement said.

Battlegroup Dnepr

The battlegroup Dnepr has defeated three Ukrainian brigades over the day, wiping out up to 75 servicemen, the statement said.

"The battlegroup Dnepr defeated the formations of Ukraine’s 65th mechanized, 128th mountain assault brigades and the 126th territorial defense brigade near Malaya Tokmachka, Pyatikhatki in the Zaporozhye Region and Ivanovka in the Kherson Region. The Ukrainian losses amounted to up to 75 servicemen, four vehicles, two US-made 155mm M777 howitzers and a Gvozdika 122mm howitzer. A field ammunition depot was destroyed," the ministry said.

Special military operation progress

Russian forces have destroyed a Ukrainian Su-24 bomber and three military helicopters, the Defense Ministry said.

"Russian forces destroyed a Su-24 bomber and three Air Forces helicopters, including two Mi-8 and a Mi-17, at airfields, as well as two launchers and a transport-loading vehicle of the US-made HIMARS multiple rocket launcher system, four launchers and two radar stations AN/MPQ-65 of the US-made Patriot anti-aircraft missile system, a launcher and radar station TRML-4D of the German-made IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile system, and a launcher of the C-125 anti-aircraft missile system. Four depots of rocket and artillery weapons and ammunition, as well as concentrations of enemy manpower and military equipment in 157 areas were hit," the statement said.

A group of 16 Ukrainian military personnel from a separate mechanized brigade has been destroyed near the village of Kremyanoe in Russia's Kursk region, a spokesperson for the Russian Defense Ministry told Sputnik on Sunday.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 On the AFU attack on an oil depot in the Rostov Region

At night, Ukrainian drones attacked an oil depot near Proletarsk to the southeast of Rostov-on-Don. The Combinat Kavkaz, which is a major fuel and lubricants storage site in the region and is under the jurisdiction of Rosreserva, came under attack.

At around 5 a.m., a Ukrainian UAV struck one of the fuel tanks, resulting in a fire. While extinguishing the fire, another enemy drone attacked the oil depot. Later, a fire train arrived in the area of the incident to extinguish the two fires. According to preliminary information, there are no fatalities or casualties.

🔻If in the last two weeks the main target of Ukrainian UAV attacks were military airfields in the Lipetsk, Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod regions, then in the course of the new raid the enemy again returned to hitting fuel and energy complex facilities.

Western media continue to applaud Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region, despite the fact that it has achieved little more than unsettling local villagers, burning weapons, and being slaughtered by Russians, with only occasional territorial gains and media photo ops. This is exploited and portrayed as a tactical marvel.

Meanwhile, some Western mass media are beginning to criticize the excessive use of resources that should be allocated to other front sections, namely Donbass. The longer Ukraine focuses on the already extensive front in Kursk, the quicker it will lose Donbass.

Having made this strategic error, Ukraine cannot now reverse it. If they start withdrawing, it would be a media disaster. They have maneuvered themselves into a dead end, marking the beginning of the end.

Escobar: So What Really Happened In Kursk?

An extremely serious debate is already raging among selected circles of power/intelligence in Moscow – and the heart of the matter could not be more incandescent...

To cut to the chase: what really happened in Kursk? Was the Russian Ministry of Defense caught napping? Or did they see it coming and profited to set up a deadly trap for Kiev?

Well-informed players willing to share a few nuggets on condition of anonymity all stress the extreme sensitivity of it all. An intel pro though has offered what may be interpreted as a precious clue: “It is rather surprising to see such a concentration of force was unnoticed by satellite and drone surveillance at Kursk, but I would not exaggerate its importance.”

Another intel pro prefers to stress that “the foreign intel section is weak as it was very badly run.” This is a direct reference to the state of affairs after former security overseer Nikolai “Yoda” Patrushev, during Putin’s post-inauguration reshuffle, was transferred from his post as secretary of the Security Council to serve as a special presidential aide.

The sources, cautiously, seem to converge on a very serious possibility: “There seems to have been a breakdown in intel; they do not seem to have noticed the accumulation of troops at the Kursk border”.

Another analyst though has offered a way more specific scenario, according to which a hawkish military faction, spread across the Ministry of Defense and the intel apparatus – and antagonistic to the new Minister of Defense Belousov, an economist – let the Ukrainian invasion proceed with two objectives in mind: set a trap for Kiev’s top enemy commanders and troops, who were diverted from the – collapsing – Donbass front; and put extra pressure on Putin to finally go for the head of the snake and finish off the war.

This hawkish faction, incidentally, regards Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov as “totally incompetent”, in the words of one intel pro. There’s no smoking gun, but Gerasimov allegedly ignored several warnings about a Ukrainian buildup near the Kursk border.

A retired intel pro is even more controversial. He complains that “traitors of Russia” actually “stripped three regions from troops to surrender them to the Ukrainians.” Now, these “traitors of Russia” will be able “to ‘exchange’ the city of Suzha for leaving the fake country of Ukraine and promote it as an inevitable solution.”

Incidentally, only this Thursday Belousov started chairing a series of meetings to improve security in the “three regions” – Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk.

Hawks in the siloviki apparatus don’t make it a secret that Gerasimov should be fired – and replaced by fabled General Sergey “Armageddon” Surovikin. They also enthusiastically support the FSB’s Alexander Bortnikov – who de facto solved the extremely murky Prigozhin affair – as the man now really supervising The Big Picture in Kursk.

And the next one is Belgorod...

Well, it’s complicated.

President Putin’s reaction to the Kursk invasion was visible in his body language. He was furious: for the flagrant military/intel failure; for the obvious loss of face; and for the fact that this buries any possibility of rational dialogue about ending the war.

Yet he managed to turn the upset around in no time, by designating Kursk as a counter-terrorist operation (CTO); supervised by the FSB’s Bortnikov; and with an inbuilt “take no prisoners” rationale. Every Ukrainian in Kursk not willing to surrender is a potential target – set for elimination. Now or later, no matter how long it takes.

Bortnikov is the hands-on specialist. Then there’s the Overseer of the whole military/civilian response: Alexey Dyumin, the new secretary of the State Council, who among other previous posts was the deputy head of the special operations division of GRU (military intel). Dyumin does not respond directly to the Ministry of Defense nor the FSB: he is reporting directly to the President.

Translation: Gerasimov now seems to be at best a figurehead in the whole Kursk drama. The men in charge are Bortnikov and Dyumin.

The Kursk P.R. gambit is set to massively fail. Essentially, the Ukrainian forces are moving away from their lines of communication and supplies into Russian territory. A parallel can be made with what happened to Field Marshall von Paulus at Stalingrad when the German Army became overextended.

The Russians are already in the process of cutting off the Ukrainians in Kursk – breaking off their lines of supply. What’s left of the crack soldiers launched into Kursk would have to turn back, facing Russians both at their front and back. Disaster looms.

Irrepressible commander of the Akhmat special forces, Major General Apti Alaudinov, confirmed on Rossiya-1 TV that at least 12,000 Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) entered Kursk, including a lot of foreigners (Brits, French, Poles). That will turn out to be a “take no prisoners” on a massive scale.

Anyone with an IQ above room temperature knows Kursk is a NATO operation – conceived with a high degree of probability by an Anglo-American combo supervising the Ukronazi cannon fodder.

Anything Kiev does depends on American ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) and NATO weapons systems of course operated by NATO personnel.

Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the sweaty green T-shirt actor in Kiev, admitted that Kiev “discussed” the attack “with Western partners”. The “Western partners” – Washington, London, Berlin – in full cowardly regalia, deny it.

Bortnikov won’t be fooled. He succinctly stated, on the record, that this was a Kiev terrorist attack supported by the West.

We are now entering the stage of hardcore positioning combat bound to destroy villages and towns. It will be ugly. Russian military analysts remark that if a buffer zone had been preserved way back in March 2022, mid-range artillery activity would have been restricted to Ukrainian territory. Yet another controversial decision by the Russian General Staff.

Russia will eventually solve the Kursk drama – mopping up small Ukrainian groups in a methodically lethal way. Yet very sensitive questions about how it happened – and who let it happen – simply won’t vanish. Heads will have to – figuratively – roll. Because this is just the beginning. The next incursion will be in Belgorod. Get ready for more blood on the tracks.

A large fuel depot came under Russian attack in the city of Ternopil. The footage shared by Ukrainian sources confirmed large fire at the facility. The concentration of harmful substances in the air in Ternopil is growing. The local authorities asked residents of the city to close the windows.

Russian precision strikes were confirmed in the village of Kotelva in the Poltava region. The footage showed fire at the settlement which was turned into a logistics hub of the Ukrainian military. A series of explosions also thundered in the city of Pokrovsk in the Dnepropetrovsk region. The city is coming under Russian attacks on a regular basis because it is another logistics hub used for military supplies to the Ukrainian grouping operating on the Donbass frontlines.

Ukrainian authorities confirmed that at least two Russian drones struck targets in the Vinnytsia region. That is two times more than the number declared by the Ukrainian military. At night explosions were reported in the city of Vinnytsia and in the town of Tulchin.

Russian drones reportedly targeted the military airfield in the Khmelnitsky region. More strikes were reported in the capital Kyiv, where explosions are reported for the third night in a row.

Russian strikes continue destroying the Armed Forces of Ukraine deployed near the frontlines. Last night, Russian strikes were reported in the city of Kremenchug and throughout the Sumy region, where the Ukrainian military accumulated large forces for attacks on the Russian territory.

Three companies of the Ukrainian National Guard have refused to obey orders to fight Russian forces in Donetsk.

The men, led by their commanders, refused to carry out combat missions near Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk in Ukrainian), located in the Kiev-controlled part of the DPR, Strana reported, quoting a serviceman of the second battalion of the 15th National Guard Brigade.

"But the trouble was that we had already arrived at Pokrovsk with a huge manpower shortage," he added. "After a week of fighting there were even fewer of us, 10 to 13 men in a company, including commanders.”
Vladislav said it was impossible to defend the positions, as Ukrainian troops were outnumbered 30 to one by the Russian forces. He said they were regularly under attack.

According to Vladislav, one of the groups was unable to retreat and the fate of its men remains unknown — whether they were killed or captured.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Opaque private military group Forward Observations Group (FOG), whose militants are fighting in the Kursk region on the side of Ukraine, were believed to have been involved in preparing a provocation with toxic chemicals on the territory of Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned more than two years ago.

A few days ago, FOG posted on social media under the nickname "gearlab.official" a photo of its members participating in the Ukrainian incursion in the Kursk region.

In the photo posted on Instagram (owned by Meta, banned in Russia for extremism), three men in military gear holding weapons and carrying blue armbands are posing in front of an armed vehicle.
"The boys in Kursk," the caption said.

Geolocation data showed that the photo had indeed been published from the Kursk region.

This is not the first time the group, which officially brands itself as a company selling tactical gear, has come into the spotlight. In March 2022, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned of a plot involving the destruction of 200-litre barrels with toxic chemicals in highly populated areas of the Donetsk region. According to the warning, Forward Observations Group was engaged in delivering and storing the toxic chemicals cargo.

On November 15, 2023, the founder of the mercenary group, Derrick Bales, published a photo on Instagram depicting a soldier walking along a snowy street somewhere in Ukraine, under which a comment from the official fog account subsequently appeared reading "The time we brought chemical weapon on frontline."

Both the US State Department and the Pentagon have declined to provide any comments regarding the presence of American mercenaries on Russian soil.

The alleged US private military contractor group, Forward Observations Group, told Sputnik that at the direction of Ukraine's security services, they would not be able to comment on allegations that they are participating in Kiev's offensive in Russia's Kursk Region.

For those who've been closely following the situation in Ukraine (and Kursk), this update from Col. Douglas Macgregor may not feature much that's new or surprising. But what struck me was a short 3 minute section starting at 8:15.

Macgregor said he had a close friend, who's lived in Russia for 15 years, who reported that the Russian population is now united in a way that no-one has seen in decades.

There are 174 ethnic groups in Russia, with rich histories, distinct identities and extensive cultural foundations. The Russians have treated them well, and they all have equal rights.

This whole population in Russia is enraged and furious — much more enraged and furious than people in the west understand.

They are publicly calling for Putin to march west — beyond the River Dnieper.

That's something Putin does not want to do, and never has. But the pressure on Putin is now greater than ever before.

Work begins on German military base near Russian border
Lithuania has begun building a military base between Russia’s Kaliningrad and Belarus, the Defense Ministry in Vilnius has announced. When completed, the facility will house a contingent of German troops, some 20km (12 miles) from the Belarusian border, close to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

The two NATO member states sealed the agreement to build the base in December 2023, during a meeting between German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his Lithuanian counterpart at the time, Arvydas Anusauskas. The plan envisages the first permanent deployment of German troops on foreign soil since the end of World War II.

The garrison is expected to reach its projected strength of 4,800 combat-ready troops and 200 civilian specialists, complete with heavy armaments and support infrastructure, by the end of 2027. Called the heavy 42nd Armored Brigade, the unit will comprise three combat battalions. Two of them will be German-only, and include an armored battalion and a heavy infantry battalion. The other will be multinational.

Speaking at the time, Pistorius characterized the future deployment as a way for his nation to “assume leadership responsibility” within NATO.

In a post on X on Monday, the Lithuanian Defense Ministry wrote that the country had “just launched its largest-ever military project at Rudninkai, building a base to house 80% of the German brigade.”

The message hailed “this unprecedented project” which it claims “strengthens regional security and reaffirms our commitment to NATO collective defence.”

Raimundas Vaiksnoras, Lithuania’s chief of defense, stated that the German “brigade will work as reassurance to our population and as deterrence, to push the Russians out,” as quoted by Reuters.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the official acknowledged, however, that Vilnius would have to shell out more than €1 billion ($1.10 billion) over the next three years to develop the base – admittedly a “huge investment” for a nation of 2.9 million.

Lithuania has raised its defense spending to 3% of GDP this year. The government hiked taxes to cover the increased outlays.

Berlin already leads a multinational NATO advance force stationed in the Baltic nation.

Moscow has repeatedly made it clear that it views the bloc’s military capabilities inching ever closer to the Russian border as a direct threat to its national security, which it will have to counter accordingly.

Call for EU state to probe Orthodox churches
Czech intelligence services must investigate the country’s Orthodox churches for signs of Russian influence, the head of the EU state’s Senate Security Committee, Pavel Fischer, has reportedly demanded.

The republic’s current legislation does not allow the state respond to security threats from churches, Fischer claimed, an implication that institutions such as the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in the Czech Republic and the Czech Orthodox Church could be influenced by Moscow to act against the interests of the state. New laws are required to provide authorities with the necessary powers, he insisted.

“Freedom of religion and association must not be abused for illegitimate influence by a hostile foreign state,” Fischer was quoted as saying by the Ceske Noviny news outlet.

He also called on the Ministry of Culture to review whether the two churches are operating in accordance with the law and the conditions of their registration, arguing that their operations should be shut down if they are found to be in violation.

As noted by Ceske Noviny, the ministry had already conducted a review of the churches after the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 and found no grounds to withdraw their registration.

Nevertheless, Fischer has insisted that the Czech branch of the ROC has direct ties with the Russian government. He also suggested that the Czech Orthodox Church, despite being independent, has come under growing influence of figures supposedly connected to the Russian security services since 2014.

The politician has also called on the Czech Interior Ministry to ensure that the police are focused on uncovering and investigating possible criminal activity by members of the two churches.

Ukrainian MPs passed a law on Tuesday that outright bans the operation of the ROC and all affiliated religious institutions in the country. It also provides grounds for the closure of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), the largest Orthodox church in the country, unless it proves that it has cut ties with Moscow.

The UOC, which had already declared full autonomy from the Moscow Patriarchate in 2022, now has nine months to comply with the new legislation.

Russia has condemned the new Ukrainian law, describing it as a “powerful blow against the whole of Orthodoxy.”

Two weeks ago, when the Ukrainian army started its incursion into Russia's Kursk region, I had expected (https://www.moonofalabama.org/2024/08/ukraine-sitrep-incursion-towards-kursk.html) the Russia army to dispel the Ukrainians within a few days. That did not happen as it took time to bring enough troops towards that new frontline.

I also underestimated the size of the force the Ukrainians had made available for the operation. It is now estimated to be in the range of 10,000 to 30,000.

For now the Ukrainian army attack has mostly be stopped though it is still trying to expand what it holds in the very rural area.

Be that as it may - the operation, even when sustained longer, makes little sense.
It gives a temporary moral high to the Ukrainian army and may allow Zelenski and the British sponsors (https://www.moonofalabama.org/2024/08/britain-claims-to-have-helped-with-the-ukrainian-invasion-of-russia.html) of this operation to prolong the war (https://www.moonofalabama.org/2024/08/ukraine-sitrep-incursion-towards-kursk.html).
The plan in Kiev is not to negotiate but to prolong the war and to convince the west to further finance it. This would have the advantage of moving billions of additional dollar from western sources into the various pockets in Kiev with Zelenski and Yermak cashing in the largest share of it.But all this comes at the cost of the Ukrainian defense in Donbas.

The Kursk incursion took so many troops from the defense of the Donbas that the front lines there can no longer be held up. It has also diverted scarce artillery ammunition which the Donbas defenders now lack. The Ukrainian defense in Donbas is currently crumbling with the Russian side taking several villages per day.

There was some hope expressed that Russia would divert troops from its Donbas attack towards Kursk. But the Kursk operation is on Russian ground where the Russian army is allowed to use conscript unit to defend the country. Conscripts are not allowed to take part in the operation within Ukraine. This gives the Russian army a large reserve that it can use against the incursion. It should be sufficient to end it.

Even at the beginning of the operation some supporters of Ukraine had feared that the incursion would break the Donbas defense:

I agree that the incursion into Kursk, while tactically successful, makes little strategic sense as it will lead to large losses of men and ground in the Donbas. It is also too costly for the units involved in it.

But that holds only as long as Ukraine does not have another high card to play.
Could it be that it has more reserves or tricks that it could apply elsewhere?

Britain's government asked the US a month ago for permission for Ukraine to use British Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia, but has yet to receive a positive response, the Times reported, citing unnamed government sources.

So far, Western countries have not budged on the issue, even as Kiev launched an invasion of Russia in the Kursk region.

A British government source told The Times that the request was effectively "stuck in the (US) system" , while another called it "routine US procedure". A third source said that discussion with allies about the use of Storm Shadow is ongoing.

According to one of the sources, London does not blame Washington for the delay and sees it as an expected part of a policy change process.

The Kyiv Independent was unable to verify the claims.

The Times report did not specify why the use of the Storm Shadow, a missile jointly developed by the UK and France with a range of 250 kilometers (150 miles), is dependent on Washington's approval.

Matthew Palmer, the US High Commissioner to the UK, denied to Times Radio that his government would have a say in the matter.

Earlier media reports indicate, however, that the license is not solely up to London. British official sources told the Telegraph in July that such a step would require agreement between three countries, including the UK.

Although the sources did not name the other two countries, France is a possibility, as it produces its own variants of the Storm Shadow – the SCALPs – which have also been supplied to Ukraine.

Like the US, the UK also allowed Ukraine to use British weapons during the Kursk invasion, with the exception of long-range missiles.

According to Kiev, limiting strikes deep inside Russia was one of the motivations behind the Kursk operation.

"If Ukraine could strike enemy troops on their soil, from where they threaten Ukraine, then Ukraine would be in a much better position to protect itself," Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi said on August 13.
