More than 400 Belgian troops, backed by German and Dutch special forces, have been combing Hoge Kempen National Park where Conings, 46, was believed to be holed up, using thermal cameras in an effort to locate the experienced soldier.

A raincoat and a camouflage tent were discovered in the 12,000-hectare park on Thursday. Inside the shelter, which was also constructed from branches and plastic tarps, were bottles of water and soda, as well as what appeared to be a cool box.

Authorities have not confirmed that the shelter belonged to Conings, a trained sniper who joined the army in 1992 and has served in Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Conings was believed to have taken refuge in the park after his car was discovered nearby on Tuesday with the four missile launchers and some ammunition inside. The soldier is also armed with an FN P90 machine gun and a handgun."

Local media reported that Conings had booby-trapped his car, by leaving a grenade inside with a wire linking the munition to the car's doors so it would explode when opened.

Despite the huge police presence and support from Germany and the Netherlands - which border the search area - there was no sign of Conings as of Friday morning.

'The sweep did not lead to the discovery of the wanted person,' federal prosecutor's office spokesperson Wenke Roggen said on Thursday night.

'The search continues now, but I cannot elaborate on that.'

Roggen confirmed that shots had been heard in the national park on Thursday, saying: 'Shots were indeed registered yesterday, but we don't know more about that.'

Conings - who is on a Belgian terror watch list and has been dubbed 'Rambo' by local media - has been described as 'an acute threat', with the public warned not to approach him but to notify police if he is sighted.

Authorities were alerted after his girlfriend Gwendy, 46, discovered several letters left by Conings, including one to his family saying that he 'could no longer live in a society where politicians and virologists have taken everything away from us.'

He also warned that he 'would join the resistance and would not surrender'.

Conings threatened several figures in the letters including Van Ranst, though it may not have been the first time he has made threats against the virologist.

Last year, Conings was put on desk duty after reportedly tweeting: 'Who has Van Ranst's address?' "

It’s unlikely that the soldier would have been able to access the weapons on his own. He would have had had help in accessing them.

As a former reservist in the Canadian Army, I know that all personal-issue weapons are kept under tight security. Special weapons like rocket launchers are kept under even tighter security. Access to all such weapons happens under tightly controlled conditions, too. An individual soldier can’t just walk up to a weapons lock-up and take whatever weapons he wants anytime he wants.

It seems a tad too convenient that the authorities would have so easily found the rocket launchers and other munitions. Either that part was staged, or the loss of the rocket launchers was almost immediately detected and the cops knew right away who took them and where they could find them.

A special forces soldier who decides to hide out in a small forest with the idea of trying to evade over 250 soldiers and cops is not a very good soldier. It’s basically the equivalent of saying, “Here I am. Come and get me.” But it makes for a pretty splashy story in the news media.

The FN P90 he’s carrying isn’t a submachine gun, as indicated in the news article. It’s actually a PDW, or personal defence weapon, carried by cooks, clerks, armoured vehicle crews and others needing a compact weapon for self-defence in close-quarter battle situations. While it can function as a SMG, it has greater capabilities.

The 5.7mm round it uses can penetrate most forms of body armour. While it can kill, it’s more likely to wound and thus afford rear-echelon troops an opportunity to escape a situation. The P90 also has select-fire capability, meaning it can be set to full-auto or semi-automatic with the flick of a switch.

A battle rifle with some reach it’s not. It’s a poor weapon to make a last stand with.

I predict this guy will likely be arrested without incident. If a firefight does erupt, he might take out or seriously wound a couple of soldiers or cops, but he’ll end up dead in the end.

Belgian fugitive Jürgen Conings: Strange details emerge after far-right soldier’s body found


The discovery of the rotting body of Belgium’s most wanted man, a fugitive far-right soldier, has been met by relief by authorities that he never carried out his deadly threats and disbelief by his family at the indications that he killed himself.

The corpse of Jürgen Conings, 46, was found on Sunday in the Dilserbos forest in the north-east of the county, just five miles from the border with the Netherlands, more than a month after he sparked the country’s biggest manhunt in a generation.

Dubbed “the Belgian Rambo”, the specialist marksman had not been seen since 17 May after taking four anti-tank missile launchers, a submachine gun and a bulletproof vest from his barracks. A Covid-sceptic and survivalist, he had issued death threats to politicians and the country’s top virologist.

“The discovery of the lifeless body ends five weeks of insecurity and threat,” said Belgian defence minister Ludivine Dedonder. “I was somewhat relieved to learn that there were no other victims,” said Belgium’s Chief of Defence staff Michel Hofman.
he virologist Marc Van Ranst, who moved with his family to a safe house, expressed relief that the crisis was over and he could return home. “I hope to get back to a normal life soon,” he said, adding that while he had “little sympathy for this man,” his thoughts were with Mr Conings’s family and loved ones.
He also had harsh words for the extreme-right, anti-Muslim Vlaams Belang party, currently the biggest party in the country, which sympathized with Mr Conings. “Vlaams Belang is now defending a member of a terrorist group and asking politicians, media and experts to apologise. That’s quite something,” Mr Van Ranst said.

The corpse was found close to where Mr Conings had abandoned his Audi Q5 car shortly after he disappeared, with the four anti-tank rocket launchers in the boot. Forensic and ballistics experts say he shot himself. However, the autopsy revealed little about when he died: somewhere between a week and four weeks ago.

The Dilserbos woods is part of the Hoge Kempen National Park, which was closed off for three days last month as hundreds of soldiers, as well as the Belgian, German and Dutch police, scoured the area searching for him. The body was found with several loaded firearms, ammunition, a knife, an axe and a machete just 150m from the perimeter of the search area: the stench of his decomposing remains was noticed by the mayor of the neighboring municipality of Maaseik, while out cycling. Another cyclist who noticed the body was later arrested for filming the scene and offering the images to a German broadcaster.

But there is also scepticism about the official version of events, with Mr Conings’s family and far-right followers concocting conspiracy theories about how security services assassinated him. There was even a small vigil of supporters near where his body was found. “It’s not possible that 500 soldiers with dogs couldn’t find him. They killed him,” said one of the relatives. “What a bizarre coincidence that the mayor of Maaseik just found him.”

The manhunt exposed failings within the Belgian military and intelligence communities, as Mr Conings had already been on the federal anti-terrorism watchlist in February for mingling with dubious extremist groups and making threats and racist remarks on Facebook.

Despite being one of at least 30 soldiers flagged and monitored by the security services, the memo appears to have been ignored by military intelligence: he was only issued with disciplinary sanctions and was still allowed to work with weapons. His three-decade career as an expert marksman meant that when he went AWOL last month, the army used armoured vehicles and an NH90 combat helicopter in their fruitless search for him.

In letters to his wife and the police, Mr Conings wrote that he “could no longer live in a society where politicians and virologists have taken everything away from us” and “would join the resistance and would not surrender without a fight”.

Did none of the 'hundreds of soldiers' searching have a dog with them? Surely that is the best way to track someone with a dog following the scent from the car?

Was there no use of thermal imaging of the wider area with a helicopter? I saw its use in a UK crime documentary a couple of years ago; surely Belgium must have that technology too. I believe that a recently deceased body loses heat over time, so the thermal image would probably have been picked up.

Jürgen Conings: Suicide confirmed as cause of death by public prosecutor

The Brussel Times Reported

"Former career soldier Jürgen Conings, who was found dead on Sunday in Dilserbos, in Dilsen-Stokkem after a month-long manhunt, died after taking his life with a gun, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Monday afternoon.

The autopsy, which started on Sunday evening, confirmed the cause of death and estimated that the date of death was between one and four weeks ago, according to reports from De Morgen.

The firearm he used lay alongside his body, which was found by the mayor of Maaseik, Johan Tollenaere, who was out cycling when he noticed an overwhelming smell of decay, just 150 metres from the spot where the forest had previously been thoroughly searched."

Mixed feelings

Conings’ girlfriend of seven years had been questioned and held in a cell as a possible suspect, either for helping Conings with his escape or of being aware of his plans. However, on Saturday, she was brought before the investigating judge, who decided not to arrest her.

According to her lawyer, Bert Partoens, she was in two minds about the news of Conings’ death.

“On the one hand, she is happy that the ordeal is over and that there were no other victims, but of course she has lost her partner,” Partoens told Het Nieuwsblad.

“She has absolutely nothing to do with what Conings did. She did not know, and she did not help him. On the contrary, she had at least as many questions as the investigators for Conings. She had been questioned several times in the past weeks but was never able to make a significant contribution to the investigation,” he added.

Several relatives and acquaintances of Conings previously contested suicide as a cause of death.

“I don’t believe he committed suicide, I believe he was murdered,” his aunt said in front of television crews at the scene on Sunday.

Back Story of Jürgen Conings



"It is now known that in 2020, Conings was a member of the extreme-right party Vlaams Belang (“Flemish Importance”). According to a May 28 report by Standaard, he also provided arms training to a fascist militia named Vlaams Legioen, (Flemish Legion), which takes its name from Belgian forces who fought with the Nazis in World War II.

The Conings events have developed into a political crisis for the Belgian government. There is continuing speculation that Defense Minister Ludivine Dodender may be compelled to resign.

The official explanation for what has taken place, that Conings was acting as a lone individual, and that the failure to act upon the many warnings of his terrorist plots was due to a breakdown in communication in the security agencies, is completely untenable.

Using his position as an arms training officer, with access to munitions and arms depots, Conings amassed an arsenal for himself. On June 1, the national public broadcaster RTL published an interview with a former commando and special forces officer, who explained anonymously that the existing security protocols mean it is impossible for anyone to do this while acting alone.

“There must have been accomplices,” he said, as the monitoring of arms is strict. “If a weapon is not returned, the depot warns the security officer of the battalion, who takes measures such as closing the gate to the barracks while awaiting the return of all the weapons,” he said. It was nothing like stealing a key. “There you are entering into fantasy. It’s not a key to a letterbox.”

The fact that Conings has been able to disappear into the forest with presumably heavy arms and ammunition also showed that he has had assistance, the retired officer added. In his experience, the Belgian army command had a lax attitude toward neo-Nazi ideology among soldiers. “An adjutant wore tattoos of neo-Nazis on his arm, without the least investigation,” he said.

More information has continued to surface in recent weeks showing that Conings had been closely tracked by multiple intelligence agencies for years, but that precautionary actions were either delayed or simply prevented by sections of the intelligence apparatus itself.

Le Soir published a more detailed chronology based on an internal government hearing that its reporters attended.

Conings was first identified by the intelligence agencies in 2015, after he made a donation to a Christians of the Orient organization. In 2018, intelligence agencies took note that he participated in an as-yet undisclosed extreme right organization.

Between 2017 and 2019, Conings faced criminal charges, including one for “possession of a prohibited weapon” and another for “threats.”

At the beginning of 2020, he published racist statements on Facebook. The defense department formally filed charges against him. However, the prosecution then opted to drop the charges and not proceed further. There has been as yet no public explanation for this.

In June-July 2020, intelligence agencies picked up the fact that Conings had performed a Google search for the home of the virologist Van Ranst, i.e., that he had chosen his target almost a year in advance.

In August 2020, the anti-terrorist OCAM (Organ for the Coordination of the Analysis of Threats) opened a pre-investigation into Conings for “extremism.”

On August 31, 2020, military intelligence (SGRS—Service général du renseignement et de la sécurité), decided to revoke Conings’ security clearance. Conings had very high level access, officially classed as “secret,” giving him access to secure and sensitive sites and to arms stores. It is Belgium’s second-highest security level, below “very secret.” Yet it would take two months, until November 12, even for the revoking of his security clearance to be acted upon.

At the beginning of 2021, OCAM completed its investigation, marking him as a “potentially violent extremist.” On February 17, 2021, it increased its risk evaluation of Conings to Level 3, the second-highest level, meaning that the risk is “grave,” “possible and realistic.”

OCAM’s evaluation is transferred automatically to all the military and intelligence branches tied to it, including the SGRS. Only five months earlier, the SGRS had itself concluded from its own investigation that Conings’ security clearance should be revoked. Yet inexpicably, the SGRS, which is allegedly responsible for monitoring extremism in the military, took no action in response to OCAM’s designation.

Defense Minister Dodender claimed that neither she nor SGRS Director Philippe Boucké were ever informed of OCAM’s evaluation. Le Soir cited an anonymous source as stating: “At the SGRS, no one moved. The information was not passed up, not translated, and no investigation was launched. The SGRS certainly had the information, but it completely neglected the follow-up of this information.”

Assuming Dedonder’s statement is true, the most obvious reasonable explanation is that a decision was taken by others in the SGRS that no further action should be taken against Conings.

Conings himself is a lifelong soldier. He joined the Belgian army at the age of 18 in 1992. He became a gunner and sniper. He was deployed in multiple missions, before eventually being transferred to military police. It has not been reported where Conings was deployed, but over this period Belgium sent forces to participate in the interventions in Afghanistan and Libya. The neo-colonial character of these wars provides ideal grounds for the promotion of fascist ideology and the development of far-right networks."

Jürgen Conings’ family asks for serenity during final farewell and cremation

The family of Jürgen Conings has asked for serenity and respect ahead of the final farewell and the cremation of the former career soldier, whose body was found on Sunday after a month-long manhunt.

The final farewell will take place on Friday between 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM in a funeral home in Maasmechelen (Limburg), and the family has said this will not be a time for political statements, according to Maarten Stulens of Papillon funeral home, that is organising the final farewell.

“The whole affair has already received enough media attention. The family wants to be able to say goodbye in privacy. They realise that there could be a strong media presence on Friday. Of course, they cannot prevent this, but they urge people to keep their distance and to show respect and calmness,” Stulens said.

The cremation will take place in the privacy of the family on Saturday, according to reports from De Standaard. "

Commemorations

"Two former members of the far-right Vlaams Belang political party have put out calls for people to commemorate Conings, according to reports from De Morgen.

One former MP for Vlaams Belang, Rob Verreycken, has created a group on the social media platform Telegram calling on people to gather at the Dilserbos, whilst another, Carrera Neefs, called for a floral tribute in Brussels, continuing the support Conings harnessed in the last month.

Verreycken stated that the group wants to “pay tribute to a veteran who courageously served his people and country, but was abandoned when he deserved help.”

Whilst Conings was being searched for, a support group ‘Als 1 achter Jürgen’ had 50,000 members at one point before it was taken down by Facebook, as it violated the policy regarding Dangerous Individuals and Organisations.

During the Whitsun weekend, around 150 people gathered for a silent march of support for Conings in Maasmechelen, however, his relatives begged them to stop and eventually the rain dispersed most of them."

Nearly a thousand people pay tribute to Jürgen Conings


"Nearly a thousand people gathered on Friday evening at the Maasmechelen funeral home to pay their last respects to the soldier Jürgen Conings, whose lifeless body was discovered last Sunday in the Haute Campine National Park in Limburg after 35 days of stalking.
