I know Florida is fraught with sink holes so there may be nothing to see here other than the tragic loss of life. However, I will be watching this story closely as it unfolds and more details are released.

If you repeatedly replay the first 2 seconds, the video appears to reveal a series of flashes inside the building but it's difficult to identify. If they are simply internal lights, then a lot more than just one person would have died.

I thought it odd that the video starts with the collapse already in motion, whereas you'd expect the first few frames at least to show the scene just prior to the collapse. It makes it harder to work out just what those flashes are.

It looks like a controlled demolition to me. Why is it collapsing on itself? Why does it not brake where the supposed weaknesses are?

If you think a moment about the geology of Florida you will realize this is just a tragic accident. This building has been sinking for years. Gravity took over. If you build a building that size on ground that is water logged and getting more so as the years go one, this will always be the result.

I like many of you thought it could have been an engineered implosion. Reminded me of bldg. 7 in 9-11. That being said, sinkholes, stress fractures, old infrastructure could also be the cause. For those of you that know about construction does a building pancake like that or does it fall over? My uneducated thought was to pancake each level had to lose support integrity on each level to pancake.

Absent a single catastrophic event causing global failure, for a building of that nature to collapse like it did would have very likely, if not certainly, been preceded by many signs of inordinate stress and failure, which the occupants and others, e.g., maintenance, would have noticed and reported. Signs such as cracks in walls, cement and other masonry, doors and cabinets not closing, water leaks, pockets of power outages, etc...

These reports, if any, should have then been followed up on with investigations by the proper authorities. If investigations were done, and signs of failure observed, at a minimum, warnings should have gone out to all concerned. And if the investigations showed signs of probable structural failure, then the entire facility, including the sections that did not collapse, should have been evacuated. (By the way, all occupants will very likely have to leave the remaining structures that did not collapse. And, if you lived or worked there, would you stay after what just happened?)

Buildings simply do not collapse without prior signs of failure, unless there was an event of such a magnitude that it caused the collapse. The questions is what was the event?

I for one am doubtful of the sink hole theory. I could be wrong, but I believe there would have been some evidence of a sink hole developing somewhere well before the collapse, even if the evidence was not observed in, under or near that building. For instance, in San Francisco there is a particular high rise condo that has been in the news and that is home to hundreds of people. That structure, and the surrounding area, showed signs of failure for several years. It has not collapsed, yet. Some people have left, even though the could not sell their condo or sold it at a loss.

I am not saying that there was an intentional act causing the collapse, such as explosives or weapons of some sort. There could have been a sudden act of nature that caused the catastrophic failure. I do not know and none of us on this Forum know.

Also for what it's worth, I believe the flashes of light or fire that are seen in the video can, and likely will, be explained as electrical wires, appliances, components, e.g. transformers, fuse boxes etc...discharging electricity as the building collapsed.

The center of the building collapsed first. Then gravity took over so yes, the engineer answer is this could have happened by subsidence and water log. These buildings were built on wetlands, wetlands are naturally water logged. Concrete will not stand in water long. On top of that the wetlands are subsiding due to the overuse of ground water. So sudden subsidence caused the center of the building to go. Add to that the fact that the city knew this building was unstable. It was recorded quite some time ago that there were cracks in the building. The same thing happened in Mexico City on May 3rd when an overpass collapsed, the subsidence had been recorded there as well.

What we know so far
At least 18 people are dead and 145 people are unaccounted for after a residential building partially collapsed in Surfside, Florida.
Search and rescue efforts have been paused due to structural concerns about the standing structure and the safety of first responders, officials said.
The cause of the collapse is still unknown, but a letter sent months before the deadly collapse warned damage to the building was accelerating after a 2018 report raised concerns.

I hadn't heard about Mcafee owning a condo there. I did see the purported tweet about him hiding his deadman's switch there but I thought that looked like an obvious fake. Aside from anything else, tweeting the location of your deadmans switch is a good way to become a dead man and JM seemed a lot more savvy than that.

The surfside collapse does look suspect. One thing I've found useful is to look at the numerology, because the crazy truth of it is that this world seems to run on numerology and so many events are signed with gematria.

The footage, shot by Adriana Sarmiento and Roberto Castillero, two tourists staying in a nearby hotel, initially heard a loud bang minutes before the 12-story condominium building collapsed. They grabbed their smartphones and headed to the parking garage.

They found water pouring out of the ceiling and concrete breaking apart inside the building's underground parking garage. Adriana Sarmiento told ABC News (https://abc11.com/10847025/) they went to investigate the loud bang. She captured video around 0118 ET Thursday, minutes before the collapse.

Sarmiento said she tried to warn residents who were on their balconies about the danger. But it was too late to evacuate the building as the next thing the couple saw was "dust, and then, glass, rock, and then I started running for my life," Castillero said.

It took the couple a few minutes for them to realize what happened, but after they came to their senses, a massive pile of rubble and debris was the only thing left of the tower.
"I said, 'Where are the people on the balcony?' " Castillero said. "I did not realize that the balcony was not there."
Sarmiento said that night haunts her mind.
"For me, it's been very difficult thinking of everyone who lived there," she said.
As of Wednesday evening, the death toll climbed to 18 with 145 people unaccounted for, according to local Surfside officials.

President Joe Biden and Jill Biden plan to travel to the condo site in Surfside, Florida, to offer their condolences to families as the number of deaths is expected to soar.

Surely the constant hurricanes don't help.

The building in question was overdue for millions of dollars worth of repairs. I don't think this collapse is particularly suspicious.
