Well, long before the Taliban (or anyone else), this is one of the most hilarious — and most beautifully written — classic travel books I've ever read.

It's a wonderful, delicious feast from start to finish, and I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud when reading it happily all on my own. And it also shows what Afghanistan used to be like in the 1950s — a charming, intriguing, idisyncratic and friendly place.

A city-dweller from London, who's never climbed a mountain in his life, sets out on a crazy whim for one of the great adventures of the 20th century.
