Call in the forest

This is indeed strange. Today while doing the usual hike upward past a gated BLM road I heard deeper into the forest and off farther from the road a very unusual call. Having heard the Cougar, Coyote, and other animal sounds even knowing many of the local bird calls but this didn't match any of them. When arriving back home my landord who lived almost a mile away was outside loading firewood with his brother. He knows I hike that road daily and asked how it was? I mentioned the unusual scream and his eyes perked up and said he heard the same call and described it back to me. I wasn't going to make an issue of it but he also said he never heard anything like it before. The location is prisitine and a plentiful food source is nearby in the form of a vineyard.

PS: The call came from the right and uphill my landlord lived on the left downhill in the valley.
