This was on the news around 8 hours ago or so, yet on any western website you visit, it was news only around 3/4 hours ago, tops. Why? Are they waiting for instructions on how to spin it? :D

I feel that the summary is so important that I want it posted here, as Clif makes so much sense about the Chinese Communist Party's motives for the past six decades. The video link will be at the end, but here is Alexandra's summary:

"If we'd been told in mid-2019 that we would be living under the level of tyranny, oppression and institutional collapse that has since descended upon the world, we would not have believed it. That's why we are desperate to know the true reason why this is happening.

In this video, Clif High gives a thumbnail sketch of the geopolitical history that has brought us to this point and the agenda that is driving all of it. We can assess his version and put it side-by-side with all that we have previously observed and considered.

I think he makes a lot of sense here and that this is a starting point towards an understanding the battlefield and what's next.

Ultimately, he thinks this all has to do with a dawning ice age and China's race against starvation, social chaos and potential collapse. This is what the rush is all about.

THE INTERNATIONAL GEOPHYSICAL YEAR

Clif believes something happened around 1955-1956 that rapidly spurred the creation of the International Geophysical Year, an international scientific project involving 67 countries that lasted from 1 July 1st, 1957 to December 31st, 1958.

He says that Mao made a speech in 1958 that he thinks was a result of the Project's findings, in which he first announced that China must conquer the West and that over the next ten years, the CCP developed the plan of the "Three Pathways" for China to conquer the planet, based on Mao Zedong's premise that China must do so, in order for the CCP to survive.

Clif says:

"What they basically were going to do is destroy the West from the inside out, by making them dependent on cheap Chinese labor, subverting...our royals and leaders, by making those people dependent on the output of the cheap Chinese labor, in the form of bribes and participation and so on, whereas the populace in the West would be induced to buy cheap Chinese goods...and subvert our culture that way and then, a deliberate attack in the form of subversion of the media and a "Long March" through the institutions.

"So that was begun in the '60s and we're living in that world now. So all of the CCP's attack on the West – because it's not only the US – was begun during this period of time between 1958 to '68, when they solidified the Three Pathways plan.

"And that plan, in the 1970s, '79, I think, led to this professor, who was an instructing, teaching professor at the People Liberation Army's version of the War College; he started writing a cohesive plan for implementation of one of these Three Pathways, which was the subversion of the culture, such that we would be unable to fight back...

"So Mao was aware, in 1958 of whatever it was, in 1955 or '56 that caused the International Geophysical Year to happen, because that was not organic...

"But that effort, in 1957-1958, in the Geophysical Year set a huge chain of events going that we're living through, right now, that culminated in the Climate Change extremists, out in Britain, the Climate Change, Global Warming efforts, all of...these lies that the Powers-that-Be have been spewing out about originated came from whatever occurred in '55 or '56 that got 'em so spooked...

"[It] basically involved a lot of mapping of the planet, poking around in the bottom of the oceans, looking up in the skies and going to Antarctica...Mainly, they ignored the Arctic...

"So all of these people in China were working on this plan to do something relative to saving China...and in '68, they start maneuvering, via the UN...to the point where, in '69 to '70, there were contacts, even though we were technically at war with them in the proxy state wars, in Vietnam and elsewhere, the Chinese were in contact with our government very extensively through these UN backchannels, leading up to the point where Nixon announced that he's going to go on over and have a face-to-face meeting with the ChiComs there.

"He announced it in '71 and he went there in, like May of '72...It was already a done deal, it was only a PR thing. It was not any negotiations or any of that. In fact, they may have just been negotiating the details of some of these 700 factories, that they were having built.

"So they knew, probably as early as '68, because of the cooperation between the US Deep State and the Chinese Deep State, they knew that they were going to offshore all of our jobs and gut out as much of the West as they could, in favor of China.

"And so, they did it to the US, they did it to Australia, they did it to New Zealand, Britain, most of Western Europe, etc. have been hollowed-out for manufacturing by converting everything over to the Chinese, as a result of this effort, that I say had been planned for 10 years.

"And then...this professor writes the book, 'Unrestricted Warfare' and he basically talks about killing off 200+ million people in the United States...

"They were going to do it with a bioweapon, they were going to do it by having 40 years of destroying our culture ahead of time, so that we can't fight the bioweapon, because we'll be hamstrung by them having captured the power elite and all of our institutions, especially including the media, which will allow them to control our response to the bioweapon, so that nobody will ever know that the Chinese released it and they won't have to worry about it.

THE IMPENDING ICE AGE & FOOD CRISIS

"In the '90s, the CCP recognizes that their population levels will inevitably lead to a food crisis...This definitive food crisis is known to be connected to Solar System changes and a Grand Solar Minimum.

"So, the CCP knew, in the '90s that it wasn't going to be Global Warming. They knew that there would come a time, when they were going to be facing, basically – as I've been saying since 2000 or so – an ice age.

"They were preparing for the impact of the food crisis on their population. If we fast-forward to today, we have that food crisis now...

"In the 1990s, the CCP realizes they're going to have to feed their populace or their populace rebels. [The would lose the "Mandate of Heaven" for those who know some Chinese history] And they also recognize that there was some unknown period of time that we were going to reach this Grand Solar Minimum and its effects.

"And we're having those effects now."

China has been losing incrementally more of their crops due to climate change from the impending ice age and it could lose as much as 50% of the harvest this year. If this loss translates into 50% of the country, or 700 million people not eating and who have nothing to lose by overturning the CCP, that could spell trouble for the latter.

Independent of the above, the Petrodollar is crashing, the Chinese have been de-dollarizing their assets and Clif says they're in the middle of double-crossing the Power Elite, globally. They were only in league with them as a sucker play and they are reneging on all of their agreements.

China's got a food problem, they need to take over the United States in order to turn it into a giant farm to ship food back to China. Clif says they made a deal with the Russians in the '70s, where China would get Newfoundland, New Brunswick, all of the US and the northern half of Mexico and Russia would get Alaska and the rest of Canada.

"The idea is, if you read their literature, the Han Chinese propose a Chinese-only planet, with the exception of a few slave races. They seem to favor slave races out of Africa...but in the last few years, there seems to be a lot of souring on that.

"The idea was they would keep their Asian, phenotypically-related cohorts around, as they decided which ones were good and which ones were bad. But they wanted to get rid of all the whites, totally and all the indigenous populations, except in Africa, they would keep Africa as a breeding ground for slaves, that's the idea of the Han Chinese.

"So it would be a Chinese-only world. And in order to accomplish this, they had this particular plan [COVID]."

Clif says it's a matter of 4 or 5 years before there's observable evidence of an ice age. As the result of the Grand Solar Minimum, the Sun's magnetosphere shrinks, which allows more cosmic rays to strike the Earth, which results in nucleation and high precipitation and potentially even the creation of "Star Water", such as some theorize to be the source of the rains that caused the Flood of Noah.

These same cosmic rays proceed to the Earth's core, which Clif believes is not made of iron but of plasma and which becomes excited by cosmic radiation, causing the plasmic core and consequently the Earth to expand and of course, increased volcanic activity, such as we've been seeing.

If there's good news in any of this, it's that we are safe from Chinese nukes and they don't want to set off an EMP to take out our electric grid, because they need our land to farm and they need to have everything working so that they can plug-and-play, before their people starve.

"So, it's a real complex problem for the Chinese. They need...bare minimum, 200 million Americans gone...But they can't do an invasion, because we're all armed...They can't do any kind of damage that would risk damaging the nuke plants.

"It's a very precarious kind of a takeover that they've got to engineer. They've got to have our society crash down just enough to the point where we're not a problem and they can come on in and take over the nuke plants and then wipe out the rest of us and they don't want us to collapse so much that all the nuke plants go ahead of that and pollute the whole area...

THE BIOWEAPON

"And so that brings us to their attack. So, they release COVID. That wasn't really the weapon. The spike protein in the weapon and...it's complicated, but our power elites handed over to the Chinese blackmail material and the Chinese took it and blackmailed them, got them involved in the whole plan.

"They're captured, just as our media is captured, the courts are captured, Congress is captured, the electoral processes are captured and Biden is captured. THE SOC

"The only way that this works is if nobody knows that the Chinese attacked us; the CCP deliberately released the bioweapon. That's why they work so hard, with Fauci and all the other f*ers, all the captured, blackmailed employees of the United States government. That's why the Chinese and the CCP and these f*ers work so hard to try and engineer that we would not understand that this bioweapon was deliberately released.

The SOC put Trump in place and stopped them from stealing the Election, the way they had since 2004, when they stole county elections and installed some 30,000 assets at those levels. They stole the 2008 elections to get Obama in, who was supposed to do away with the 2nd Amendment, with the endless false flags he ran.

The CCP will not invade as long as the US populace has weapons. The only way they can come is under the guise of UN troops, which would only work for so long before we began to shoot them.

They had planned for us to go to war with North Korea and have North Korea nominally win the war, according to our captured press, who would show our aircraft carriers sinking and tell us that we lost and so we'd have to surrender the Constitution, which gets rid of the Second Amendment and then the Chinese would come in and take over.

Hillary was supposed to do all of this during her 8 years and they're behind schedule and about to starve. Clif thinks the CCP is losing. The coronavirus was not as deadly as they'd hoped because we have higher vitamin D levels than they thought. The failure of the coronavirus is why they launched the vaxxine.

The people who are dying of COVID have vitamin D levels under 20 ng/ml. If you have levels over 47 ng/ml, you are immune to the coronavirus. No virus is any stronger or communicable than any other against a healthy immune system.

The Mainstream Media is the only thing that's really keeping this going and they are dying and are about to experience complete narrative collapse before the end of this month.

"When that happens, everything changes...The SOC can get a lot more stuff done, because they're not constantly running into this battle in the information wars. They'll be able to flood the place with information and change minds and things change very rapidly, because they won't have a lot of pushback to the information they'll be providing to us. I had a piece of the puzzle and a similiar theory, and it fits well in Cliff's theory also.

Maybe that Long March 3B can launch a nuclear payload. But just because China launched a Long March 3B and it's trajectory was over australia it doesn't mean it is a warning, that is a Long March 3B platform is for a satellites, nothing about it says military.

AUKUS

You might not know this but recently it was announced the AUKUS treaty between Australia, UK and USA, in which Australia will have access to nuclear submarines.

Reading between the lines on this one it was a show of unity and deep trust between these nations, and to an extent the other minor nations in the south pacific.

Putting China on notice that US & UK has Australia's back. So don't go screwy louie on us China.

Furthermore allies in our region have been regularly conducting " rights of passage exercises ".

Basically pushing back against China's bullying.

Letting China know that we the allies are not going to be intimidated by China, and we will continue to sail the international waters of the South China sea.

In regards to Russia I think Putin values his friendship with the USA and POTUS Trump, furthermore russia has left its communism firmly in it's past, they will not be supporting China on this.

So China the bully in the school yard has got no friends, not even North Korea.

But then in the minds of people the fear factor comes into play, people are overwhelmed by the shear size of the chinese military.
Because China has the word's largest navy and 2.5 million soldiers and say a 1,000 fighter aircraft with such vast numbers they could seemingly easily defeat the allies.

Very impressive figures on paper, military parade or for a state run propaganda piece, but what about the logistics to mobilise and maintain such a huge military during war time.

Do you remember what happened to the germans during the " battle of bulge " in 1944, they failed because they ran out of fuel.

With that in mind, where is China going to get the fuel to run their war machine in a conflict in 2021 that is diesel, avgas, lubricants, steal, copper, gold, silver, coal, ammunition.

If country's like Australia don't supply China with raw material, they might look to Russia or africa.

But would Russia, Africa or the Middle East want to get involved with China on a war against western nations and risk putting the western nations offside is the question.

Also china's supply lines could be blockaded by the allies physically or by diplomatic pressure.

So really if china wants a war to divert the attention of the chinese people away from their failing economy (that is due to the overreach by evergrande and the default on payments). It will probably be a very limited war against Taiwan.

And regardless of the lack of diplomatic recognition of Taiwan as it's own country. " The allies will protect Taiwan. "

An example, only in the last few days Japan has mobilised 100,000 soldiers in readiness to support Taiwan.

The allies have Taiwan's back, and Creepy Joe doesn't control the US military.

(Off topic and in short. Why did the allies pull out of afghanistan? Because they are not going to protect the poppy fields anymore. Poppys are the basis of the big pharma opioid based model. Big phrama opioid based model is now a vaccine based model. Second last point China has been conducting daily fly overs with bomber and fighter jets.

Did you take a good look at the equipment they are flying over Taiwan, they are 1960's era jets Mig-21's and Tupolev Tu-16.

China has 888 jet fighters of that 388 are Mig-21, that is 44% of the fighter aircraft are obsolete 1960's technology.

Their 120 bombers are all Tupolev Tu-16 yet again obsolete 1960's technology.

China is notorious for stealing technology from western countries in an effort to maintain technological pace with the western nations so they do not have the ability to build aircraft which are on par with what the allies have, that is the F-35 or F-22 or B-2 etc.

One further point on these chinese fighter aircraft would only have access to their onboard munitions and radar guidance to target by their radar or that of a radar surveillance aircraft or ground station and would need to engage or have another aircraft engage that target.

With the allied aircraft such as the most common 5th generation aircraft the F-35 not only is it stealth therefore invisible to chinese surveillance.

The F-35 is part of a integrated 5G system with all allied assets whether it be ships, tanks, helicopters all collectively building a complete picture of the battlefield and sharing that information on the position of enemy assets between themself and then using the most appropriate means to take out that enemy asset.

New Defence Minister Speak about Chinese Interception of RAAF P-8A Poseidon

On the 26th of May, a RAAF P-8 maritime surveillance aircraft was intercepted by a Chinese J-16 fighter, during routine maritime surveillance activity in the region of the South China Sea. The intercept resulted in a dangerous manoeuvre and conduct that threatened the safety of both the Australian aircraft and crew.

What occurred was that the J-16 aircraft flew very close to the side of the P-8 maritime surveillance aircraft. In flying close to the side, it released flares, the J-16 then accelerated and cut across the nose of the P-8, settling in front of the P-8 at very close distance. At that moment, it then released a bundle of chaff which contains small pieces of aluminium, some of which were ingested into the engine of the P-8 aircraft.

Quite obviously, this is very dangerous.

The crew of the P-8 responded professionally, and in a manner which would make us all feel proud, they returned the aircraft to its base.

I've expressed a concern (PM Albanese) to the Chief of the Defence Force for the welfare of the Australian crew, and he has assured me that they are all unharmed.

I directed the Department of Defence and the Chief of the Defence Force to make representations to the Chinese authorities about this incident in which we expressed our concern about what had occurred, and particularly, the manner in which the safety of the Australian aircraft and crew had been placed in jeopardy. Those representations have been made.

I want to stress that the activity of the P-8 form part of maritime surveillance activity which has been undertaken by Australia, in the South China Sea for decades; other countries do the same. We're operating completely within our rights at international law.

Because the South China Sea matters to Australia. It matters to Australia, because most of our trade traverses the South China Sea. Whilst China is no saint or even decent in the scheme of world politics or decency to their own people... part of me wants China to show their backbone and say "screw you USA government" and react to any provocation.

“Combat air-raid sirens” can be heard blaring out in the Fujian city of China and Beijing warned this afternoon that they “will take decisive measures to protect state sovereignty and territorial integrity – the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.”

On Tuesday “dozens of US Air Force fighter jets” were “lifted from bases in Japan to Taiwan” amid the high tensions over Pelosi’s disputed visit to Taipei.

An “undisclosed amount” of “Taiwanese aircraft have taken to the air” followed by “Chinese J-16 fighter jets appeared at the southern end of Bashi Strait,” Taiwanese media SETN reported.

Before Pelosi arrived in Songshan airport in Taiwan where the Taiwanese military removed “camouflage covers were removed from anti-aircraft guns” which re “installed near the runway” and also “radar systems” were also “brought to a state of readiness.”

Channel 4’s International Editor Lindsey Hilsum warned, “One of the senior American officials from the Defence Department said the other day: you know, the problem with all this is that sooner or later there’s going to be an accident.

Earlier today large convoys of Chinese tanks were seen driving through the Fujian city and along a beach with horrified holidaymakers looking on, and the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) has closed the airspace on Tuesday heading towards Taiwan.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian warned on Monday that Beijing “will not sit back” in what he calls “a gross interference in China’s internal affairs,” then sent a further warning of “very serious developments and consequences.”

On Tuesday Lijian again warned, “If Pelosi insists on visiting Taiwan, China will take resolute and strong measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He added, “Those who play with fire will perish by it.

“We would like to once again admonish the US that we are fully prepared for any eventuality and the PLA will never sit idly by.”

Less than a half-day after Nancy Pelosi's departure from Taiwan on a US Air Force plane, a large group of 27 Chinese PLA planes breached Taiwan's air defense identification zone Wednesday, crucially with at least 22 of the aircraft reported as having crossed the Taiwan Strait "median line".

In response, the ministry said it issued radio warnings and readied air defense missile systems to monitor the activities. Earlier in the day state-run English language PRC mouthpiece Global Times declared that Beijing now views the median line has having ceased to exist.

What these folks fail to even think about is this: how do you feel most Chinese will react both to the visit and to the lack of Chinese reaction (so far!)?

They will get mad and express their frustrations. Now look at it from the Chinese government’s point of view, rather then spending billions on anti-US propaganda they, instead, let the US humiliate China and thereby solidifying the Chinese population for the day when the real confrontation will take place.

PLA drills around Taiwan continue to 'rehearse reunification operation' after Pelosi's visit, 'exercises blockading island to become routine'

Joint military exercises around the island of Taiwan by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) continued Wednesday with a joint blockade, sea assault and land and air combat trainings, involving the use of advanced weapons including J-20 stealth fighter jets and DF-17 hypersonic missiles after the drills started on Tuesday evening, when US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed on the island which seriously violates China's sovereignty.

The exercises are unprecedented as the PLA conventional missiles are expected to fly over the island of Taiwan for the first time, the PLA forces will enter area within 12 nautical miles of the island and that the so-called median line will cease to exist, experts said, noting that by surrounding Taiwan entirely, the PLA is completely blockading the island demonstrating the Chinese mainland's absolute control over the Taiwan question.

The PLA Eastern Theater Command on Wednesday organized its affiliated Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force, Strategic Support Force and Joint Logistic Support Force and conducted realistic combat-oriented joint exercises in the sea and air space to the north, southwest and southeast of the island of Taiwan, the PLA Eastern Theater Command said in a press release (https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202208/1272077.shtml) on the day.

Joint blockade, sea assault, land attack and air combat drills were at the core of the operation, as the exercises tested the troops' joint operational capabilities, said the press release.

The J-20 stealth fighter jet, H-6K bomber, J-11 fighter jet, Type 052D destroyer, Type 056A corvette and DF-11 short-range ballistic missile are among the weapons used in the drills, as shown in the photos attached to the press release.

Early warning aircraft and DF-17 hypersonic missiles also joined the exercises, according to a report by China Central Television.

Wednesday's drills came after the PLA Eastern Theater Command started joint military operations around the island of Taiwan on Tuesday evening, involving joint maritime and air exercises in the sea and in the air space to the north, southwest and southeast of the island of Taiwan, long-range live-fire shooting in the Taiwan Straits, and conventional missile test launches to the east of the island of Taiwan.

The PLA will also conduct important military exercises and training activities including live-fire drills in six large maritime areas and their air space surrounding the island of Taiwan, in its north, northeast, east, south, southwest and northwest, from Thursday noon to Sunday noon, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday evening.

Unprecedented actions

This is the first time the PLA will launch live long-range artillery across the Taiwan Straits, in a move that will demonstrate the PLA's firm will and strong capability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and thwart secessionist attempts by "Taiwan independence" and external interfering forces, Zhang Junshe, a senior research fellow at the Naval Research Academy of the PLA, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

"If the conventional missiles of the PLA were to be launched from the mainland toward the west of Taiwan and hit targets to its east, this means that the missiles would fly over the island, which is unprecedented," Chinese mainland military expert Zhang Xuefeng told the Global Times.

He also pointed out that five of the drill zones are set to the east of the so-called median line of the Taiwan Straits, and this means that the existence of the line is denied through the concrete action of the PLA.

Some drill zones are also for the first time set to include areas within 12 nautical miles to the island of Taiwan, but since Taiwan is a part of China, Taiwan's so-called territorial sea is also China's territorial sea, Zhang Xuefeng said.

Also, the PLA drills surrounding Taiwan are intended to show that it is capable of blockading the entire island and of resolving the Taiwan question through non-peaceful ways, if the situation becomes irretrievable, observers said.

From the designated PLA military drills area, the operations could pose a threat to major ports and shipping lanes in Taiwan, forming a complete blockage. This blockage style could be one of the action plans taken in the future for achieving the reunification by force, Herman Shuai, a retired Taiwan lieutenant general, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

Two northern exercise areas designated by the PLA are located off the coast of Keelung Port and Taipei Port, the central exercise area is located off the Taichung Port, the southern exercise area is located off the Kaohsiung Port and the eastern one is located off the Hualien Port. The exercise areas are a "template" for "locking down Taiwan," Shuai said. "If the PLA exercises take a long time, it will constitute a substantial blockage of Taiwan."

The PLA' s drills this time are "comprehensive and highly targeted," showing the determination of resolving Taiwan question once and for all, Chinese mainland military expert Song Zhongping told the Global Times on Wednesday.

The drill should be viewed as a war plan rehearsal, Song said, "In the event of a future military conflict, it is likely that the operational plans currently being rehearsed will be directly translated into combat operations."

"It means that our battle plan has been made clear to the US and the Taiwan authorities, and we are confident enough to inform them of the consequences of further provocation in this way," Song said.

Comparing to the Taiwan Straits crisis in 1996, the PLA's military strength has been greatly enhanced, analysts say.

"In 1996, we didn't have aircraft carriers, the Type 055 large destroyer, nor hypersonic missiles... Since then our ability to strike, capture and kill has greatly improved and our military options and confidence have increased," Song said.

Shuai believes that in 1996, Taiwan's self-defense capabilities were relatively strong, the PLA's projection capabilities were still insufficient, and the number of amphibious warfare ship was limited. Also the PLA's Navy Marine Corps as well as Air Force did not have absolute advantages.

Therefore, at that time, the PLA did not have the capability of completely blocking the island. It only used the method of test-launching missiles to send warnings, but it did not pose any threat to the open seas of Taitung and Hualien, not to mention to US aircraft carriers, Shuai said. "But it is different now. After so many years of rapid development, the PLA, whether it is with the Type 055 large destroyer, aircraft carriers or amphibious landing ship, now fully possesses the strength to blockade the Taiwan Island."

Not intercepting Pelosi's flight does not mean a failure of the PLA. On the contrary, the Chinese mainland chose to avoid an incident that could trigger a World War III but instead to take Pelosi's Taiwan visit as a chance to push forward the progress of reunification, starting with the island-blockading, combat-rehearsing drills that could become routine, analysts said.

Zhang Hua, an associate research fellow at the Institute of Taiwan Studies, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Wednesday that the law on punishing Taiwan secessionists is complete and in place in the mainland.

Taiwan secessionists can be judged according to Criminal Law for splitting the country, destroying the reunification of the motherland and endangering national security, the expert said.

Zhang Wensheng, deputy dean of the Taiwan Research Institute at Xiamen University, told the Global Times on Wednesday that after the reunification, the Chinese mainland can collect evidence against Taiwan secessionists in accordance with criminal law, set up special courts to try them in absentia, and nail all those at large wherever they are.

In addition, the scope of sanctions can be extended to the family members of Taiwan secessionists, which means they'll be banned from business exchanges with the mainland and the institutions they work for should also be included in the sanctions list, Zhang said.

Mainland experts said that it cannot be ruled out that more regulations against Taiwan secessionists will be adopted in the future. Considering that the Anti-Secession Law is more of a framework and principle law, the central government could formulate a specific law targeting Taiwan secessionists, similar to the national security law for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

"TAIPEI -- Apple has asked suppliers to ensure that shipments from Taiwan to China strictly comply with Chinese customs regulations after a recent visit by senior U.S. lawmaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei stoked fears of rising trade barriers.

Apple told suppliers on Friday that China has started strictly enforcing a long-standing rule that Taiwanese-made parts and components must be labeled as being made either in "Taiwan, China" or "Chinese Taipei," sources familiar with the matter told Nikkei Asia, language that indicates the island is part of China.

The U.S. tech titan urged suppliers to treat the matter with urgency to avoid possible disruptions caused by goods and components being held for scrutiny, the people said.

The timing is sensitive for Apple, as its suppliers are preparing components that will go into its next iPhones and other new products set to launch this autumn.

Using the phrase "Made in Taiwan" on any import declaration forms, documents or cartons could cause shipments to be held and checked by Chinese customs, the sources added. Penalties for violating such a rule is a fine of up to 4,000 yuan ($592) or, in the worst-case scenario, the shipment being rejected, one of the sources said.

This presents a dilemma for suppliers who need to ship materials, components or parts from Taiwan to China, however, as the democratically governed island also requests that all exports be labeled with product of origin, which means they must carry the words "Taiwan" or "Republic of China," the island's official name, according to suppliers and logistics companies.

Apple's warning comes after shipments from Taiwan to one of iPhone assembler Pegatron's facilities in China were held for review on Thursday to see if the import declaration form or cartons are labeled with "Taiwan" or "Republic of China."

Beijing has long viewed Taiwan as a part of its territory and is strongly opposed to senior U.S. officials such as House Speaker Pelosi making formal diplomatic visits to the island.

To avoid any shipping chaos and further supply chain disruptions, Apple has also told suppliers to form contingency plans or quickly review and amend their labels on cartons and forms for shipments from Taiwan to China, if necessary, the people added.

The increased scrutiny of shipments to Pegatron's Suzhou facility came a day after a senior Pegatron executive and other Taiwanese chip industry leaders met with Pelosi in Taipei at a lunch hosted by President Tsai Ing-wen.

Apple did not respond to Nikkei Asia's request for comment as of publication time.

The continual presence of the top tier B-2 bombers in northern Australia in recent months is a symbolic deterrent. To China a clear statement to " back off " from thoughts of invading Australia.

I don't think China would be stupid enough to threaten Australia or our Queensland RAAF airbase Amberley with a B-2 on the tarmac (so is the B-2 actually a mobile US embassy), because in doing so it would provoke a reaction from the US military.


Fifth B-2 to touch down in Australia

A fifth US Air Force B-2 bomber has flown to Base Amberley to train with RAAF F-35s amid tension between China and Taiwan.

The UFO-like Spirit can carry nuclear weapons and is thought to be the most expensive aircraft ever made, valued at around $2 billion each.

It comes at the same time China conducted military drills around Taiwan in retaliation to a visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

On 28 July, a fifth B-2, “Spirit of Florida”, flew into the Queensland base to replace “Spirit of Alaska”, which departed on 24 July.

It likely amounts to the biggest ever deployment of the US’ most important military jet to Australia, with the country’s active fleet only numbering 20.

In total, six B-2s have visited Base Amberley this year, with one aircraft earlier touching down in March before the current deployment that began in July.

The fleet is visiting from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri as part of an initiative to improve interoperability between the US Air Force and the RAAF’s F-35s. They have been joined by “several” KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft.

The aircraft to arrive are:

“We look forward to training and enhancing our interoperability with our RAAF teammates, as well as partners and allies across the Indo-Pacific as we meet PACAF objectives.”

The B-2, better known as the stealth bomber, is a multi-role aircraft capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions. It has a crew of two pilots: one in the left seat and a mission commander in the right.

It was first publicly displayed in 1988, when it was rolled out of its hangar at Air Force Plant 42 in California, before its maiden flight the next year.

Its new deployment in Australia comes at the same time as with continuing tension in the region.

Last week, a visit to Taiwan by US Speaker Pelosi led to China testing ballistic missiles over Taipei for the first time.

Then on Monday, China announced new military drills around Taiwan, including joint exercises focusing on anti-submarine and sea assault operations.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry later claimed to have detected 39 Chinese air force planes and 13 navy ships around the Taiwan Strait.

A second combat jet with advanced stealth capabilities which is set to be directed heavy against the PLA is the upcoming B-21 ‘Raider’ heavy bomber - of which the U.S. Air Force reportedly intends to acquire over 100 making it the most numerous bomber in the world. The World’s First Hypersonic Cruise Missile Will Fly 20 Times Faster Than the Competition

The Pentagon has plenty of cruise missiles in its arsenal, from the long-serving Tomahawk to the new JASSM-ER. But a new missile set to enter service in 2027 is radically different: the new Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM) will fly up to 20 times faster, giving adversaries little time to escape its wrath. HACM will be the first mass-produced weapon to use air-breathing scramjet engines.

Raytheon and Northrop Grumman won a contract worth $985 million to develop the world’s first hypersonic cruise missile. HACM, developed for the United States and Australia, is an air-launched hypersonic cruise missile designed to quickly strike targets on the ground. Under the terms of the contract, the Pentagon should see the first operational missiles in 2027.

In 2020, the U.S. and Australia jointly began the Southern Cross Integrated Flight Research Experiment partnership, or SCIFiRE. Named after the constellation that appears on Australia’s national flag, SCIFiRE was meant to develop an air-breathing hypersonic weapon system designed to be carried on both U.S. and Australian aircraft, including the F/A-18 Super Hornet, F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, P-8A Poseidon aircraft, and others. The contract will mature the Raytheon SCIFiRE prototype into an actual weapon system.

HACM is a tactical weapon designed to be used on day one of a large-scale conventional conflict. “HACM will provide our commanders with tactical flexibility to employ fighters to hold high-value, time-sensitive targets at risk while maintaining bombers for other strategic targets,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown said in an Air Force statement last week.

Traditional cruise missiles are basically pilotless aircraft. Like many aircraft, turbofan engines power cruise missiles, propelling them at subsonic speeds. Cruise missiles fly low to avoid radar detection, and a slower speed helps them fly lower and hug the ground. Tomahawk cruise missiles, for example, fly at an altitude of between 98 and 164 feet at a speed of 550 miles per hour.

HACM is a hypersonic weapon, which means it flies at Mach 5 or faster—but we don’t know exactly how much faster it will fly. Most missiles that remain in the atmosphere, like air-to-air missiles, top out at around Mach 3+. SCIFiRE was descended from the earlier HIFiRE program, which tested a scramjet engine at speeds up to Mach 8.

HACM will be the world’s first operational weapon system to use a scramjet engine. Like turbofan engines, scramjets scoop up oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere to use as fuel. One key difference between the two is that a turbofan engine scoops up oxygen at subsonic speeds, while a scramjet scoops it up at supersonic speeds. More oxygen means more fuel for the scramjet engine, which enables it to propel the missile even faster. According to NASA, scramjet engines should work to at least Mach 15. That translates to 11,509 miles per hour, or fast enough to circle Earth in about two hours.

Hypersonic weapons are the new hotness in warfare. Most of the avowed nuclear powers have technically had hypersonic weapons for a half-century or more, as the ballistic missiles that carry nuclear warheads travel at hypersonic speeds, impacting their targets at up to 15,000 miles per hour. This new generation of hypersonic weapons is different in that it is non-nuclear in nature—at least so far—and would be used immediately in a conventional war.

There’s a lot we don’t know about HACM. We don’t know how fast it really flies, or how far it flies. All we know is it is small enough to be carried by a fighter jet and will be ready by 2027. One thing is for sure: HACM is awkward and we need a better name for it.

SCIFiRE Hypersonics

Australia and the United States signed a collaborative agreement to develop and test hypersonic cruise missile prototypes under the Southern Cross Integrated Flight Research Experiment (SCIFiRE).

The SCIFiRE Program is based on more than 15 years of collaboration between Australia and the United States on science and technology research into hypersonic scramjets, rocket motors, sensors, and advanced manufacturing materials.

The new weapon will be a Mach 5-class precision strike missile that is propulsion-launched and powered by an air-breathing scramjet engine. It will be capable of being carried by tactical fighter aircraft such as the F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler and F-35A Lightning II, as well as the P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft.

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently unveiled on December 16th 2022 his country's new 5 year $320 billion dollar defense plan that will acquire 500 US made tomahawk cruise missiles that can strike Chinese territory for the first time. It will effectively double the size of Japan's military budget and make them the world’s third-largest military spender right after the United States and China. It’s not just an increase in weapons, their publicly released historic 2022 National Defense outlines sound justifications and legal arguments for this rearmanet as well as a change in their defense posture to deter aggression. Oh no! Sound the alarms! The Japanese empire has woken up from its slumber and they’re getting ready to take over the world again! ”

Obviously that’s absolutely ridiculous but tell that to North Korea, Russia and China who all took turns coming out to publicly denounce Japan’s new military plan as “dangerous” and alluding to Japan's history as an expansionist empire. Chinese Communist Party tabloid Global Times said “Japan has a history of straying into militarism and committing aggression and crimes against humanity, which has brought disaster to the region and the world and is now deviating from the track of post-war peaceful development.

Yes Even 80 years after the last world war it’s hard for some people to forget. people don’t forget meme In most modern discussions about great power politics we completely overlook Japan but I think a closer analysis will show you that this great nation holds the keys to keeping China in check. Many people do not understand just how much economic influence and soft power Japan projects despite having a somewhat self imposed limited military. Even though China’s GDP surpassed Japan’s in 2010. Japan is still the largest sponsor of infrastructure projects in Southeast Asia. Yes, that's even bigger than China’s massive efforts to expand with their Belt and Road Initiative throughout the region. As of 2021 Japan's investments in projects in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam is $259 billion compared to China’s $157 billion. This means Japanese banks lend more to Southeast Asia's five largest economies than the United States, UK and France combined. Doesn’t explain why my loan requests to Japanese banks are always denied but fair enough. Japan's massive construction projects across Asia give them tremendous credibility, respect, and influence in foreign policy decisions in the region. This makes Japan a closer rival to China than the US in this regard. Tokyo is the undisputed heavyweight champ of infrastructure investments in South East Asia even though China gets all the news reports about their belt and road initiative. These projects include a subway system for Manila and a new East-west southern economic corridor that will link up Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar to promote free trade.

These are some of the projects Japan is changing the world with. So how does Japan compete against China in this field? They offer low interest rates of around .25% for 30 year loans which is way better than the 4% interest rates on China’s projects which have been criticized for debt trapping developing countries. As we enter incandescent 2024, four major trends will define the progress of interconnected Eurasia.

Financial/trade integration will be the norm. Russia and Iran already integrated their financial message transfer systems, bypassing SWIFT and trading in rials and rubles. Russia-China already settle their accounts in rubles and yuan, coupling immense Chinese industrial capacity with immense Russian resources.

The economic integration of the post-Soviet space, tilting towards Eurasia, will predominantly flow not so much via the Eurasia Economic Union (EAEU) but interlinked with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

There will be no significant pro-Western inroads in the Heartland: the Central Asian “stans” will be progressively integrated into a single Eurasia economy organized via the SCO.

The clash will become even more acute, pitting the Hegemon and its satellites (Europe and Japan/South Korea/Australia) against Eurasia integration, represented by the three top BRICS (Russia, China, Iran) plus the DPRK and the Arab world incorporated to BRICS 10.

On the Russian front, the inimitable Sergey Karaganov has laid down the law:

“We should not deny our European roots; we should treat them with care. After all, Europe has given us a lot. But Russia must move forward. And forward does not mean to the West, but to the East and the South. That is where the future of humanity lies.”

And that leads us to the Dragon – in the Year of the Dragon.

The Mao and Deng road maps

There were a whopping 3.68 billion Chinese trips by rail in 2023 – an all-time record.

China is fast on the way to become an AI global leader by 2030. Tech giant Baidu, for instance, recently released Ernie Bot to rival ChatGPT. AI in China is expanding fast on healthcare, education, and entertainment.

Efficiency is the key. Chinese scientists have developed the ACCEL chip – capable of performing 4.6 quadrillion operations per second, in comparison to NVIDIA’s A100, which delivers 0.312 quadrillion operations per second of deep learning performance.

China graduates no less than one million more STEM students than the U.S., year after year. This goes way beyond AI. Asian nations always reach the top 20% in science and mathematics competitions.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) may be lousy on geopolitics. But at least they did a public service showing nations that lead the planet in 44 critical technology sectors.

China is number one, leading on 37 sectors. The U.S. leads on 7.

Everyone else leads zero sectors. These include Defense, space, robotics, energy, the environment, biotechnology, advanced materials, key quantum technology and of course AI.

How did China get here? It’s quite enlightening today to revisit a 1996 tome by Maurice Mesner: The Deng Xiaoping Era: An Inquiry into the Fate of Chinese Socialism, 1978-1994.

First of all, one needs to know what happened under Mao:

“From 1952 to the mid-1970s, net agricultural output in China increased at an average per annum rate of 2.5 percent, whereas the figure for the most intensive period of Japan’s industrialization (from 1868 to 1912) was 1.7 percent.”

Across the industrial sphere, all indicators went up: steel production; coal; cement; timber; electric power; crude oil; chemical fertilizers. “By the mid-1970s, China was also producing substantial numbers of jet airplanes, heavy tractors, railway locomotives, and modern oceangoing vessels. The People’s Republic also became a significant nuclear power, complete with intercontinental ballistic missiles. Its first successful atomic bomb test was held in 1964, the first hydrogen bomb was produced in 1967, and a satellite was launched into orbit in 1970.”

Blame it on Mao: he transformed China “from one of the world’s most backward agrarian countries into the sixth-largest industrial power by the mid-1970s.” On most key social and demographic indicators, China compared favorably not only with India and Pakistan in South Asia but also with “’middle-income’ countries whose per capita GNP was five times that of China.”

All these breakthroughs laid down the path for Deng: “The higher yields obtained on individual family farms during the early Deng era would not have been possible had it not been for the vast irrigation and flood-control projects – dams, irrigation works, and river dikes – constructed by collectivized peasants in the 1950s and 1960s.”

Of course there were distortions – as the Deng drive produced a de facto capitalist economy presided by a bureaucratic bourgeoisie: “As has been true of the histories of all capitalist economies, the power of the state was very much involved in establishing China’s labor market. Indeed, in China a highly repressive state apparatus played a particularly direct and coercive role in the commodification of labor, a process that has proceeded with a rapidity and on a scale that is historically unprecedented.”

It remains an inextinguishable source of debate to what extent this fabulous economic Great Leap Forward under Deng generated calamitous social consequences.

The Empire of kakistocracy

As the Xi era definitely tackles – and tries to solve – the drama, what makes it even more complicated is the constant interference of the notorious “structural contradictions” between China and the Hegemon.

China-bashing is the number one politically correct game across the Beltway – and that’s bound to go out of control in 2024. Assuming a Democratic debacle next November, there are few doubts a Republican presidency – Trump or no Trump – will unleash Cold War 3.0 or 4.0, with China, not Russia, as the top threat.

Then there is the upcoming Taiwan election. If pro-independence candidates win it, incandescence will exponentially rise. Now imagine that compounded with a rabid Sinophobe occupant of the White House.

Even when China was militarily weak, the Hegemon could not defeat it, either in Korea or in Vietnam. There is less than zero chance Washington would defeat Beijing on a South China Sea battlefield now.

The American problem is encapsulated in a Perfect Storm.

Hegemon hard and soft power have been hurled down a black void with the imminent, cosmic NATO humiliation in Ukraine, compounded with complicity with the Gaza genocide.

Simultaneously, Hegemon global financial power is about to take a very hard hit as the Russia-China strategic partnership leading BRICS 10 starts offering quite viable alternatives to the Global South.

Chinese scholars, in priceless exchanges, always remind their Western interlocutors that History has been a consistent playground pitting aristocratic and or/plutocratic oligarchies against each other. The collective West now happens to be “led” by the most toxic variety of plutocracy: kakistocracy.

What Chinese qualify, correctly, as “crusader nations” are now significantly exhausted – economically, socially, and militarily. Worse: nearly totally de-industrialized. Those with a functioning brain among the crusaders at least have understood that “decoupling” from China will be a major disaster.

None of that eliminates their arrogant/ignorant drive for a war on China – even as Beijing has exercised immense restraint by not giving them any excuse to start another Forever War.

Instead, Beijing is reversing Hegemon tactics – as in sanctioning the Hegemon and assorted vassals (Japan, South Korea) on rare earth imports. Even more effective is the concerted Russia-China drive to bypass the U.S. dollar and weaken the euro – with full support of BRICS 10 members, Opec+ members, EAEU members and most SCO members.

The Taiwan riddle

The Chinese masterplan, in a nutshell, is a thing of beauty: to finish off the “rules-based international order” without firing a shot.

Taiwan will remain the prime not-yet-engaged battlefield. Roughly, it’s fair to argue that the majority of the population of Taiwan does not want unification; at the same time, they don’t want an American-engineered war.

They want, essentially, the current status quo. China is not in a hurry: Deng’s master plan pointed to reunification sometime before 2049.

The Hegemon, on the other hand, is in a tremendous hurry: it’s all about Divide and Rule, all over again, promoting chaos and destabilizing China’s inexorable rise.

Beijing tracks literally anything that moves in Taiwan – via monumental, meticulous dossiers. Beijing knows that for Taipei to thrive in a peaceful environment, it needs to negotiate while it still has something to negotiate with.

Every Taiwanese with a brain – and there are plenty of first-class scientific brains in the island – knows they can’t expect Americans to die fighting for them. First of all because they know the Hegemon won’t dare fighting a conventional war with China, because the Hegemon will lose – badly (the Pentagon gamed all options). And there won’t be a nuclear war either.

Chinese scholars are fond of reminding us that when the Middle Kingdom was totally fragmented in the 19th century under the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), “the Sino-Manchu ruling class was incapable of relinquishing their self-image and of taking the draconian necessary steps.”

The same applies to the Exceptionalists now – even as they go on serial somersaults trying to preserve their own, mythological self-image: Narcissus drowned in a pool of his own making.

It’s possible to advance that the Year of the Dragon will be a year where Sovereignty reigns. Hegemon fits of Hybrid War rage and collaborationist comprador elites will be obstacles constantly hampering the Global South. Yet at least there will be three poles with the spine, the resources, the organization, the vision and the sense of Universal History to take the fight towards a more equal and just system to the next level: China, Russia and Iran.

China's Foreign Minister stated yesterday that #Beijing welcomes and highly appreciates Nauru's decision to sever ties with #Taiwan and seek the resumption of full diplomatic relations with China.

Nauru's government had announced earlier the severing of diplomatic relations with Taiwan in line with a #UN resolution that recognizes #China as the sole legal government representing the whole of China, affirming that it would seek to resume full diplomatic relations with China.

On Sunday, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force completed the formation of an amphibious brigade responsible for the defense of the remote Nansei Islands.

On March 24 , the 3rd Airborne Regiment was created as part of the brigade with a total strength of 600 military personnel. Deployment point - Takematsu garrison (Omura, Nagasaki Prefecture). The ceremony for presenting the banner to the unit was attended by Defense Minister Kihara Minoru (photo).

Kihara, referring to China, which is “increasing its maritime expansion,” said: “Protecting the islands is directly related to the survival of the country. Deterrence and response capabilities will continue to be strengthened.”

Together with the 1st and 2nd Airborne Regiment, stationed at the Ainoura garrison (Sasebo city, Nagasaki Prefecture), the total strength of the brigade was increased to 3,300 personnel.

(It's hard to say how much, if any, of the following might just be anti-CCP propaganda, but considering all that's been revealed about the ineptitude and shoddiness of construction in China, from housing to technology, it's not difficult to believe it's largely true.

Taiwan’s Lai is detested by Beijing as a “dangerous separatist” for championing the island’s sovereignty and distinct identity. He succeeded two-term president Tsai Ing-wen to start an unprecedented third consecutive term in power for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

Beijing has denounced Lai’s inauguration speech, during which he called on China to cease its intimidation of Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry has condemned China’s drills as “irrational provocations and actions that undermine regional peace and stability.”
In a statement Thursday, the ministry said it had dispatched sea, air and ground forces in response to the drills.

“We stand by with firm will and restraint. We seek no conflicts, but we will not shy away from one. We have the confidence to safeguard our national security,” it said.
Taiwan’s presidential spokeswoman Karen Kuo said in a statement: “It is regrettable to see China threatening Taiwan’s democracy and freedom and regional peace and stability with unilateral military provocations.”

“In the face of external challenges and threats, we will continue to defend democracy and have the confidence and ability to protect national security,” Kuo added.

In a statement on Thursday, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was following developments in the Taiwan Strait closely, and urged all parties to “refrain from acts that could escalate tensions in the region.”

Taiwan’s 23 million people have long become used to the threat of China’s war drills, and Thursday life continued as normal in the capital Taipei.
While Taiwanese news outlets were reporting on the Chinese drills, it was far from the only headline on their agenda, which also included recent political bust ups in the legislature, and even information on filing taxes during the tax season.

Taipei’s main stock index, the TAIEX, was 0.26 percent up in mid-afternoon trade.

Propaganda push

China’s military drills are as often as much about playing to a domestic audience as signaling intentions internationally. China’s military and state media churned out propaganda and highlighted coverage of the drills, which remained a top trending topic Thursday on tightly controlled Chinese social media platforms.

Footage of the drills released by the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command showed a guided missile frigate, the Nantong, and a pilot climbing into a fighter jet at a military base.

The rhetoric coming from Chinese state media and the PLA portrayed the exercises as a practice run for encircling Taiwan, and even threatening small outlying islands that lie close to China’s mainland.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV said multiple destroyer and frigate formations of the Eastern Theater Command Navy “maneuvered at high speed in multiple directions in the waters surrounding Taiwan, creating an omnidirectional approach in pushing toward the island.”

Meanwhile, the command’s air force dispatched dozens of fighter jets to Taiwan’s main island and outlying islands, according to CCTV.

“Under the support and cover of the Army and the Rocket Force, multiple types of aircraft were organized and loaded with live ammunition, flew to the predetermined airspace to establish multiple strike positions, and coordinated with destroyers, frigates, and missile speedboats to simulate attacking the ‘enemy’s’ high-value military targets and reconnaissance and patrol aircraft,” the report said.

Carl Schuster, a former director of operations at the US Pacific Command’s Joint Intelligence Center, said Beijing was trying to stress Taiwan’s older and less numerous hardware.
For instance, “Taiwan’s F-16s are over 20 years old and every flight hour tasked to those air frames draws the fuselage and equipment ever closer to refurbishment, which takes them out of service for 1-4 months. It also stresses the force overall, keeping them on edge,” he said.

Schuster said in addition to the drills around Taiwan’s main island, the pressing of China’s Coast Guard and other forces into waters close to the outlying islands controlled by Taipei is “provocative.”

“It puts Taiwan on the spot. If they react militarily or forcefully, they risk triggering a conflict,” he said.


Rising tensions

Under leader Xi Jinping, China has grown more assertive and ramped up diplomatic, economic and military pressure on Taiwan as the island democracy tightens informal ties with the United States.

Officials in Washington have been anticipating for several months the prospect of Chinese provocations around the inauguration and had been having contingency conversations as part of their planning, according to officials.

Periods of higher tension, like the swearing-in of a new president in Taiwan, are areas where US officials frequently brace for a Chinese show of force, officials say.

“There’s no surprise whenever there’s an action that highlights Taiwan in the international sphere the Chinese feel compelled to make some kind of form of statement,” Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Stephen Sklenka, the deputy commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command told the National Press Club of Australia on Thursday.

In August 2022, China staged massive war games around Taiwan to show its displeasure with then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei. Beijing fired missiles into waters surrounding the island and simulated a blockade with fighter jets and warships, in its largest show of force in years.

A similar encirclement exercise was also held in April 2023.

Chinese warplanes now regularly fly into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) and across the Median Line in the Taiwan Strait – an informal demarcation point that Beijing does not recognize but until recent years had largely respected.

Beijing has also exerted pressure on Lai in the lead-up to his inauguration. On May 15, days before Lai took office, Taipei said it detected 45 Chinese military aircraft around Taiwan, the highest single-day number this year.

Evan A. Feigenbaum, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, calls China’s latest drills “an intimidation tactic, part of a pattern, not a sign of imminent war.”

“Beijing has a robust coercion kitbag from which it will mix and match, ratchet up and back and up again to signal its range of options to coerce and inflict pain,” he wrote on social platform X.

Some defense experts noted that the name of China’s latest military exercises “Joint Sword-2024A” suggests another round of drills could follow later this year.

Drew Thompson, a senior research fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, noted the drills were part of a pattern.

“It is not a surprise, nor is it a tactical response to President Lai’s speech. These exercises are part of the PLA’s long-term, strategic preparations to fight and win a war over Taiwan,”
