How is a room full of kids, each in a plastic bubble, tooting on horned instruments well within the range of hearing (and sight) of each other going to assist them in maintaining focus on their melodic lines? Your point might be well-taken if they were practicing alone.

A brave try. ;) I used to sing bass in a four-part acapella harmony group and I can tell you that we needed to be able to hold our tune whilst listening also to the other parts. It doesn't work otherwise.
