BIG AND SPOOKY: The largest rocket ever launched from the west coast of the USA blasted off from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base on Jan. 20th at 1:10 pm PST. "The 23 story-high Delta IV Heavy rocket used three boosters, which produced more than two millions pounds of thrust to carry its payload into orbit," says photographer Anthony Galvan III, who recorded the launch on Figueroa Mountain some 40 miles from the Air Force base:

The massive rocket's "spooky" payload was a top-secret spy satellite belonging to the US National Reconaissance Office. Any doubts about the covert nature of the mission were dispelled 10 minutes after liftoff when the rocket's live feed went deliberately black. Only a twisting contrail in the blue Pacific sky reminded onlookers that, yes, it really happened.

The patch for NRO Launch 49 depicts a phoenix rising from the flames. The patch also features fourteen stars, including one being carried in the bird’s beak. There also appears to be a fifteenth star obscured by the bird’s wing. There’s a long tradition in such patches for the stars to symbolize the number of payloads launched. Fourteen stars just happens to be the number of KH-11 type electro-optical satellites successfully launched by the United States over the years—including the one being carried into orbit by this bird. A fifteenth launch—the one obscured star—ended in failure.


This launch supports the military's national defense mission. The payload is confidential and is designated as National Reconnaissance Office L-49 (NROL-49), but most likely it's KH-11 type electro-optical reconnaissance satellite. The flow of official information about this mission will cease at the point of payload fairing separation. No further comment about the status of the mission will be made after this milestone.

Thanks bluestflame and witchy - these pictures sent a chill down my spine, and not the pleasant kind. “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know.” Very creepy message. I'm not real fond of "the devil we know" right now, and oh-how-I-wish I knew who the "devil we don't know" might be.

That patch is really spooky. I almost expect to see a swastika on it somewhere.

thinking further into it if i was gunna bail out on a rocket ship I wouldn't announce it 11 months ahead , I'd leave now and keep people focused a little further down the track
