Share you songs that you are listening to now :)
Nirvana - Oh Me. I so love their MTV Unplugged album. The band had such a bright but short life. I recommend you to listen to it if you haven't still done it.
I payed attention to that fact that quiet a lot of engineers listen to heavy music. As for me, it really helps staying focused. What do you think?
I was also wondering what Elon Musk listens to, and it turned out that he’s a fan of Frank Sinatra and Andre Bocelli. I was surprised

Ah yes, I listen to music everyday.
I had a huge list of bands and songs that I have enjoyed over the years but when the pandemic hit I found some new music that seemed to fit the narrative for me.
I created a thread here on Avalon "Got a bad bug - feeling like hell - listening to music really loud to increase my energy"
If you haven't visited it, I think you should. You can see a bit of my journey reflected in the music I put there hoping maybe that it might be helpful to some.
This song is from a band where I grew up and close to where I live now. It is the latest song that I posted on the thread.
I hope you like it. :)

Have been listening to a tonne of Diana Krall (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_Krall) for about two days now. I am ready to move on to some other female jazz singers. Once that genre runs its course who knows, that is the beauty of music, you can make it fit your mood.

Over the past few days I've had to satisfy a real yearning for Paul Simon's album, Graceland.................. Especially the songs "Graceland" & "Obvious Child".
It's his use of melody, especially minor chords, combined with tragic lyrical content that gets me every time with these songs. A very controversial album at the time, but the lyrical content, musicianship and stellar array of African/World Music make this album a real joy to revisit periodically .

This song pushes emotional buttons, fear, empathy, anger.
Empathy for the hare, empathy for the pursued and the persecuted. Anger at those self righteous bastards who take pleasure in harming others. The tale is in the lyrics, and you must scroll down for those.

In 1968 I was living in Long Acre, Covent Garden, London, a very poor art student, and working as a projectionist at the Arts Lab in Drury Lane, earning £2.10 shillings a week. I missed many meals to save my money to see the Pink Floyd at this place called Middle Earth. Covent Garden was then still the vegetable distribution center of London. They played on Saturday nights, in this large basement warehouse that smelled of raw potatoes, and the only decoration was colorful light shows projected onto the grey cement walls. There were no chairs, people just mingling and dancing; high on all sorts of substances. Floyd often with their backs to the audience, not being visual performers. But the music was enough.
They had that large circular gong as their only stage prop.

Ivo Pogorelich playing Robert Schumann’s 3-movement Fantasia in C and Johannes Brahms’ 2-movement Paganini Variations in Madrid in 2016:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RJYk0tB-og
It is a music-lover’s recording made in the Concert Hall. You can only hear him play. It will do.
If you do not know classic piano music well: Pogorelich’s “transcendental” playing may win you over.

Sadly I am a musical ignoramus only gaining pleasure from music that really penetrates me emotionally in a moving, profound, breathless heart, kinda way. Or pumps into my veins causing my body to sway or dance in a boppy fun kinda way.
Catchy tunes that I can sing to are my other go to source, even though I could never sing to save my life. Doesn't stop me from involuntarily belting out and butchering songs to the rolling eyes of companions as they whisper, "Don't give up ya day job".
Coming from a non-musical family, with disco being my formative era, probably had a lot to do with that and maybe explains why the marketable classic, Phantom of the Opera, makes me howl at the moon.
I think there might even be a few choice words in the music industry to describe my type, lol - the ones that don't hear all the genius sounds - and I'm more than happy to have 'em thrown my way :)
Anyway, I can't escape my musical illiteracy but would love to find a few classics that have that deep, rumbling, escalating sound, (there's my ignorance showing), that stabs at my core. Last of the Mohicans and Phantom are examples of what I'm looking for.
Any classical music buffs that might be able to think of a couple off the top of their head and post, I would be very grateful.

"Musical illiteracy" you say...... But you love disco!
Disco rocks! And as for Phantom......... Well, I'll show my cards, I don't know it so well but......... I ab-so-lu-te-ly LOVE Chess by ABBA's Bjorn & Benny and Tim Rice....... And bare in mind, I made a living as a club dj in the some of the UK & Europe's cooler clubs in the early '90's........ And musical's or classical where a bit of a dirty secret at that age!
Never, ever, under any circumstance, dismiss your musical preferences......... If it touches you on an emotional and spiritual level, whether it be hardcore Detroit techno, '70's rock, or Opera........ If it touches the part's that other beers can't reach, then it's alright by me.

In Richard Wagner’s Götterdämmerung (“Twilight of the Gods”), the fourth of a towering series of four related operas, the young human hero Siegfried is treacherously murdered by Hagen.
His comrades take his body on their shoulders; a funeral march ensues.
Siegfrieds Tod und Trauermarsch ("Siegfried’s Death and Funeral March") is here being played, in 1988, by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of the charismatic Klaus Tennstedt – moved to tears by the music he interprets with them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXh5JprKqiU
Now this music sounds like the Funeral March for the natural human who, in spite of laziness, cowardice, flippancy, ... ... ... — o God of the Gods, has not deserved to die.

Yes this is an offshot of the "My favorite Music" Thread
But, if anyone can't get a song by the original lyrics please ask the meaning, and the person who posted please reply and explain. And do explain in english about what the song means
Purpose is to get a better understanding about what some songs truly mean but in a shared language that allows everyone around to pick it up
So if you heard a song and you don't get what it truly means, please post it here and anyone with the correct understanding may explain

Let's see if this can help you out a bit with those energy levels.
A 22 minute psymix I finally hacked into shape recently after abandoning it 3 years ago to give my ears and head a rest and give myself time to work out what was wrong with it. It was far too long, for one thing. 22 minutes is about right for this level of neuronal energy.

Now? ok...now, as in bands that have been influenced and still being creative during this covid crap.
This band has some amazing tunes and some that will make you think, laugh and cry.
**Listen to some of their other tunes - I have posted them in other threads too - sorry. :)
But this is just a fun one - I blast this tune probably everyday (more than once - can't help myself).
This isn't an original, but they sure do bang it out!
In case anyone is wondering? I am an old guy - always loved music and always looking at new bands and listening to new sounds.
..and Norman - well done on your piece too!! I wish I had more time to make some music myself, and I know I am going to regret that! :)

This was the Live at Montreux song that reached the spot for me the most.
I love what he's saying, and I love what the keyboardist does at the bridge. He makes it sound more like an electric guitar than something with keys.

Soft Machine - A Certain Kind
Music from the quantum universe! Soft Machine are an English rock band from Canterbury, formed in mid-1966 by Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Kevin Ayers (bass, guitar, vocals), Daevid Allen (guitar), and Mike Ratledge (organ). As a central band of the Canterbury scene, the group became one of the first British psychedelic acts, but sadly enough moved into jazz fusion, after their first two legendary albums.

How Can I Keep From Singing?
nxi4SDc48og
"My life flows on in endless song
Above earth’s lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,
When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?
What though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
What though the darkness ’round me falls,
Songs in the night it giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I’m clinging.
Since Love is Lord of Heaven and Earth
How can I keep from singing?"
Trust Your Heart
aikqmScft2o
"In the sky the phantom moon appears at midday
To join the sun in some forgotten dance
In their light our voices tremble with reflections
Of what we know and what we leave to chance
The heart can see beyond the sun
Beyond the turning moon
And as we look
The heart will teach us
All we need to learn
We have dreams, we hold them to the light like diamonds
Stones of the moon and splinters of the sun
Some we keep to light the dark nights on our journey
And shine beyond the days that we have won
The heart can see beyond our prayers
Beyond our fondest schemes
And tell us which are made for fools
And which are wise men's dreams
Trust your heart
Trust your heart"
Sisters of Mercy
Vno9PmFaEco
"All the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone
They were waiting for me when I thought that I just can't go on
And they brought me their comfort and later they brought me this song
Oh, I hope you run into them, you who've been travelling so long
Yes, you who must leave everything that you cannot control
It begins with your family, but soon it comes around to your soul
Well, I've been where you're hanging, I think I can see how you're pinned
When you're not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you've sinned
Well, they lay down beside me, I made my confession to them
They touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their hem
If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn
They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem
When I left they were sleeping, I hope you run into them soon
Don't turn on the lights, you can read their address by the moon
And you won't make me jealous if I hear that they sweetened your night
We weren't lovers like that and besides, it would still be alright
We weren't lovers like that and besides, it would still be alright"

TEST CARD MUSIC
Here in the UK, in the 60s and 70s, there were only 3 tv channels to choose from.
Before programmes started in the afternoon, test cards were originally physical cards at which a television camera was pointed, allowing for simple adjustments of picture quality.
The music played by the BBC, and afterwards ITV, was library music, which was licensed on more favourable terms for frequent use than commercially available alternatives.
For rights reasons, much of the music was recorded by light music orchestras in France and Germany, though sometimes by British musicians, or top international session players using pseudonyms, such as The Oscar Brandenburg Orchestra.
Anyhow, that's what I've been listening to a lot in the car. Many examples of test card music can be found on youtube....

Lyrics "Twist In My Sobriety":
All God's children need travelling shoes
Drive your problems from here
All good people read good books
Now your conscience is clear
I hear you talk girl
Now your conscience is clear
In the morning when I wipe my brow
Wipe the miles away
I like to think I can be so willed
And never do what you say
I'll never hear you
And never do what you say
Look my eyes are just holograms
Look your love has drawn red from my hands
From my hands you know you'll never be
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
We've just poked a little empty pie
For the fun that people had at night
Late at night don't need hostility
The timid smile and pause to free
I don't care about their different thoughts
Different thoughts are good for me
Up in arms and chaste and whole
All God's children took their toll
Look my eyes are just holograms
Look your love has drawn red from my hands
From my hands you know you'll never be
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
Cup of tea, takes time to think, yeah
Time to risk a life, a life, a life
Sweet and handsome
Soft and porky
You pig out 'til you've seen the light
Pig out 'til you've seen the light
Half the people read the papers
Read them good and well
Pretty people, nervous people
People have got to sell
News you have to sell
Look my eyes are just holograms
Look your love has drawn red from my hands
From my hands you know you'll never be
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety

I noticed when searching on google for how many covers are made the majority of them seems to be made by alternative (rock) bands coming from Russia! ... no joke ... most have so much more to offer that are their own creations ... the song is loved by Russians because it resonates with Russian past? ... Like seeing so many losing their souls? Becoming detached? ... This concept/insight can happen worldwide but even more in Russia?
cheers,
John

I can see the train depart
And the sad look on your face that hides those tears
I'll be back
How could I live, a year without your love?
The letter says wait for me, this time will pass
A year isn't a century, I'll be back
Although it's difficult, living without your love
Soon we'll be together, I love you so much, my love
This time will pass soon
I'll be back
Think of me always like this
This time will pass soon, the letter says wait for me
I love you so much, my love
A year isn't a century
I'll be back
Think of me always like this..
This time will pass soon
Soon we'll be together, I love you so much, my love
Time will pass...
I'll be back
Think of me always like this, that time will pass
My love, my love, my love, my love
A year isn't a century...

You might want to do it manually. Take the last 11 digits of letters and numbers at the end of the youtube address:

Except for the space I have added, surround that with this (all caps or all small, doesn't matter):

Great tunes from that time and genre. I went to see the Cramps back then - they came on stage and played only 3 or 4 songs and left. I never found out why. Was it a stunt? A conflict with the band, or with management?
Whichever is was, it was not cool for the fans that were there. Ah well. :)

On the fourth of July, 1806
We set sail from the sweet cove of Cork
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks
For the Grand City Hall in New York
'Twas a wonderful craft
She was rigged fore and aft
And oh, how the wild wind drove her
She stood several blasts
She had twenty-seven masts
And they called her The Irish Rover
We had one million bags of the best Sligo Rags
We had two million barrels of stone
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides
We had four million barrels of bones
We had five million hogs
Six million dogs
Seven million barrels of porter
We had eight million bails of old nanny goats' tails
In the hold of The Irish Rover
There was ol' Mickey Coote
Who played hard on his flute
When the ladies lined up for a set
He was tootin' with skill
For each sparkling quadrille
Though the dancers were fluther'd and bet
With his smart witty talk
He was cock of the walk
And he rolled the dames under and over
They all knew at a glance
When he took up his stance
That he sailed in The Irish Rover
There was Barney McGee
From the banks of the Lee
There was Hogan from County Tyrone
There was Johnny McGurk
Who was scared stiff of work
And a man from Westmeath called Malone
There was Slugger O'Toole
Who was drunk as a rule
And fighting Bill Treacy from Dover
And your man, Mick MacCann
From the banks of the Bann
Was the skipper on The Irish Rover
For the sailor it's always a bother in life
It's so lonesome by night and by day
That he longs for the shore
And a charming young whore
Who will melt all his troubles away
Oh, the noise and the rout
Swillin' poitin and stout
For him soon the torment's over
Of the love of a maid, he is never afraid
That old salt from The Irish Rover
We had sailed seven years
When the measles broke out
And the ship lost its way in the fog
And that whale of a crew
Was reduced down to two
Just myself and the Captain's old dog
Then the ship struck a rock
Oh Lord, what a shock
The bulkhead was turned right over
Turned nine times around
And the poor old dog was drowned
And the last of The Irish Rover

I just discovered the cellist Hauser, and this performance from him is hilarious.
The audience is full of drooling young women, and he is openly and shamelessly flirting with (apparently) ALL of them, while at the same time giving a masterful performance.)

Well, you may be right. I haven't listened closely to a lot of cellists so my description of "masterful" might be an exaggeration, but I don't think he's succeeded entirely due to his showmanship.
In any case, he has an unusual combination of talents.
I imagine he will continue to be successful in his part of the world, at least, and I wouldn't be surprised if his fame grows mostly due to his sex appeal and shameless but funny exhibitionism.

Well, just because a woman enjoys a handsome, romantic guy with a sense of humor doesn't mean she's shallow.
A woman who can't might just be way too serious.
But for my taste, he does go overboard, and that's why I find him hilarious.

This music piece keeps things very simple and is all the better for that, I hear it as being all about two simply opposing polarities of living and doing 'life'. I like things that say it so simply.

Very entertaining!! Those guys are more like rock stars.
It's a wonder there were any strings left on their cellos after that performance.
I wouldn't have been too surprised if they had set their cellos alight at the end or smashed them ala Jimmy Hendrix.
They're not quite that unbridled however--after all, they perform for classical music fans mostly, I imagine.
But if that performance had really taken place in the 18th Century, half of the ladies probably would have fainted dead away and everyone else would have been close to rioting.

Crystal Gayle & 'Midnight in the Desert'
Friday - October 19 2001
Beloved musician Crystal Gayle joins Art in hour 2 to talk about the song she recorded specifically for his show. Called "Midnight in the Desert," Art feels the song is a perfect fit for his program and was blown away by it – this was the first day he'd heard it, when he and Gayle had lunch earlier.

I was dangerous
I said something bad
It must of been good
There must be somebody looking
Saying Im close to it.
Maybe I'm getting close to the truth
I'm not talking about
Wishful thinking
Im talking about
Calling them OUT
On their lies lies
Somebody said
It was about the data
Somebody said
It was about the dates
Somebody said
Does it really matter
I said yes
Somebody body show me
Show me the proof

The Wind Cries Mary ... Jimi Hendrix
K2B2nT6pfSE
"After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footprints dressed in red
And the wind whispers Mary
A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterday's life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries Mary
The traffic lights they turn up blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags downstream
Cause the life that lived is, is dead
And the wind screams Mary
Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past
And with his crutch, its old age, and it's wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary "

When you see the bars going down ... I instantly train myself to hear the harmonics before it is actually played ... although I am not a professional at all ... I seem to be able to predict in my head (inner ear) what it "sounds like" BEFORE you actually can hear the sounds.
My stepmother played piano in our living room when I was 12 years old up to 17th years old ... Listened to all kinds of piano music when I was young of age ... but never took any piano lessons ...
I also noticed that when listening to 5th, 7th & 9th Symphony of Beethoven (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_van_Beethoven) at that age I could study do homework from school much better ... I only have to read things once and I can almost recall all of it ... When I am listening to other "modern music" the opposite happens >> I had trouble studying, doing my homework, and got lower grades ... But with classical music something magical happens within my brain.
The key is (was) I did it all voluntary, no one pushed me to listen to classical music ... in the beginning I thought it was "way to complex" ... much later I can recall most Symphonies without notes without hearing the music ... All memorized in my head ... This was the bases of better understanding the books: "Super-Learning" and "Supermemory: The Revolution" by Sheila Ostrander, Lynn Schroeder & Nancy Ostrander
cheers,
