View Full Version : All kinds of Avalon

We all encounter "Avalon" here and there, all around us.
Sometimes the name of a ship. Or a book.
This thread just to list where you encountered "Avalon".
I was watching a new (2022) movie : "The In Between".
At 24' into the movie there was an "Avalon" theatre.
At 25' an "Avalon" camerashop.
That was already unusual.
Till at 40' into the movie, it appears that the town in the movie is called "Avalon"!
It's a nice movie to watch, a bit "cheesy" at times maybe, but with an Avalon-forum theme (kind of anyway).

My "Avalon" experienced happened when I was about 10 years old. Friends of my parents rented a beach house on the Jersey Shore (that is New Jersey, USA, for you Brits ) and spent a magical day at the shore.
But I also had a magical "Camelot" experience too! When I was 17, I traveled to England and spent two days in Tintagel, Cornwall at the Camelot Hotel. Tintagel was supposedly the location of King Arthur's castle, Merlin's Cave, etc. The hikes along the windswept ocean cliffs were magnificent although a bit treacherous on the way back given all the hard cider we had been drinking. I've heard Kerry Cassidy talk about going there with Bill, but have not heard if Bill has any fond remembrances of this town?

There's an Avalon city on Santa Catalina Island off the cost of Los Angeles. I don't recall ever going there. I did go scuba diving off the coast of Anacapa Island when I was a teenager. If I were to guess a significance I would say the Channel Islands are remnants of Mu.

The promotional blurb for a series of 'Avalon' books I read many years ago, by Marion Zimmer Bradley:
'Here is the magical legend of King Arthur, vividly retold through the eyes and lives of the women who wielded power from behind the throne. A spellbinding novel, an
extraordinary literary achievement, THE MISTS OF AVALON will stay with you for a long time to come....'

Yes, I certainly do. (It's a tiny village, barely a "town"! The population is about 1,750, though it gets a lot of tourists.)
We had a magical day and a half there, the end/turnaround point of a whistlestop tour of England's southwest that had also featured Stonehenge, Avebury, and Glastonbury. Kerry had never been to any of them.
It was the early morning of our return trip, setting off on the journey back to London where Kerry had a plane to catch, that I suggested the name Project Camelot for a new venture we could tackle together.
We envisioned and agreed the entire thing in about 90 seconds flat, not an exaggeration. A week later, unplanned before then, I was on a plane to LA where we started to work together.

Thank you Johan, for the thread.
When it comes to the word Avalon I can't go past the marvellous song "Avalon of the Heart" by Van Morrison.
Even after decades of listening it never grows old. Much like the dream of Avalon itself.

On down by Avalon
Avalon of the heart
On down by Avalon
Gonna make a brand new start
Oh the Holy Grail
Baby behind the sun
Oh the Holy Grail
Down by Avalon
Well I came upon
The enchanted vale
Down by the viaducts of my dreams
Down by Camelot, hangs the tale
In the ancient vale
Oh the Avalon sunset
Avalon of the heart
Me and my lady
Goin' down by Avalon
Well I came upon
The enchanted vale
Down by the viaducts of my dreams
Near Camelot, hangs the tale
Of the enchanted vale
In the upper room
There the cup does stand
In the upper room
Down by Avalon
Goin' down by Avalon
Oh my Avalon of the heart
Goin' down by Avalon
Gonna make a brand new start
Oh down by Avalon
Oh baby behind the sun
Goin' down by Avalon
Well the journey's just begun
Oh down by Avalon
Sweet Avalon of the heart
Goin' down by Avalon

I once found a few books left on a public bench, including one titled Avalon. Took me a while to read, but fascinating.
Story of the Norse about a thousand years ago, including their colonization of Greenland. The detail I liked best was how they scouted that coast for the best places to habitate: dump a bunch of plank wood out in the ocean, then go find where it tended to wash up. Book said the thinking was that they were expecting lost or disabled boats to be drawn by currents to those places too.
I don’t recall reading why it was called Avalon. Am I missing something with that name?

Avalon is basically everywhere..
I watched this movie many years ago, I still have it here in DVD I bought in a supermarket.
Here is the movie : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0267287/
"In a dystopian world, a woman spends her time playing an illegal and dangerous game, hoping to find meaning in her world."
No need to say what is the name of the game :)

I cracked up with this one, my goodness that song takes me back - such a festival of all that is wholesome, normal and greeting card excellence! Ha, Avalon is the fabled island where Merlin and Arthur now reside isn't it? Like the western islands of the Elves in LOTR: I think we are all magical beings who just happened to rediscover one another after an eternity, nice to meet you all again!

Avalonia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalonia) was a microcontinent that drifted off Northern edges of Gondwana in Palaeozoic era.
Åland Island (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Åland), Ahvenanmaa in Finnish, autonomous territory of Finland. Its original Old Norse name was Ahvaland , “the Water Land” ( land surrounded by water) while ahwa (water) is related to Latin aqua.
Avalon has been there long long ago before the recent continental split I suggest , is older than Atlantis ( and the rest of the “stuff” 😅 ) and whatever we may think about it is but a dream ...

I have an Avalon Tri Toon pontoon boat , it's made here in Michigan, it's one bad axx boat and rides like a Mercedes in the water, came with 150 h.p. motor. I added 4 feet to the back of the boat as a platform so it is now 30ft long. Spends lots of evenings on the lake.High demand for all the Avalon boats.

"Can you meet me in the country
In the summertime in England
Will you meet me?
Will you meet me in the country
In the summertime in England
Will you meet me?
We'll go riding up to Kendal in the country
In the summertime in England
Did you ever hear about
Did you ever hear about
Did you ever hear about
Wordsworth and Coleridge, baby?
Did you ever hear about Wordsworth and Coleridge?
They were smokin' up in Kendal
By the lakeside
Can you meet me in the country in the long grass
In the summertime in England
Will you meet me
With your red robe dangling all around your body
With your red robe dangling all around your body
Will you meet me
Did you ever hear about
William Blake
T. S. Eliot
In the summer
In the countryside
They were smokin'
Summertime in England
Won't you meet me down Bristol
Meet me along by Bristol
We'll go ridin' down
Down by Avalon
Down by Avalon
Down by Avalon
In the countryside in England
With your red robe danglin' all around your body free
Let your red robe go
Goin' ridin' down by Avalon
Would you meet me in the country
In the summertime in England
Would you meet me?
In the Church of St. John
Down by Avalon
Holy magnet
Give you attraction
Yea, I was attracted to you
Your coat was old, ragged and worn
And you wore it down through the ages
Ah, the sufferin' did show in your eyes as we spoke
And the gospel music
The voice of Mahalia Jackson came through the ether
Oh my common one with the coat so old
And the light in the head
Said, daddy, don't stroke me
Call me the common one
I said, oh, common one, my illuminated one
Oh my high in the art of sufferin' one
Take a walk with me
Take a walk with me down by Avalon
Oh, my common one with the coat so old
And the light in her head
And the sufferin' so fine
Take a walk with me down by Avalon
And I will show you
It ain't why, why, why
It just is
Would you meet me in the country
Can you meet me in the long grass
In the country in the summertime
Can you meet me in the long grass
Wait a minute
With your red robe
Danglin' all around your body
Yeats and Lady Gregory corresponded
And James Joyce wrote streams of consciousness books
T.S. Eliot chose England
T.S. Eliot joined the ministry
Did you ever hear about
Wordsworth and Coleridge?
Smokin' up in Kendal
They were smokin' by the lakeside
Let your red robe go
Let your red robe dangle in the countryside in England
We'll go ridin' down by Avalon
In the country
In the summertime
With you by my side
Let your red robe go
You'll be happy dancin'
Let your red robe go
Won't you meet me down by Avalon
In the summertime in England
In the Church of St. John
Did you ever hear about Jesus walkin'
Jesus walkin' down by Avalon?
Can you feel the light in England?
Can you feel the light in England?
Oh, my common one with the light in her head
And the coat so old
And the sufferin' so fine
Take a walk with me
Oh, my common one
Oh, my illuminated one
Down by Avalon
Oh, my common one
Oh, my storytime one
Oh, my treasury in the sunset
Take a walk with me
And I will show you
It ain't why
It just is
Oh, my common one
With the light in the head
And the coat so old
Oh, my high in the art of sufferin' one
Oh, my common one
Take a walk with me
Down by Avalon
And I will show you
It ain't why
It just is
Oh, my common one with the light in her head
And the coat so fine
And the sufferin' so high
All right now
Oh, my common one
It ain't why
It just is
That's all
That's all there is about it
It just is
Can you feel the light?
I want to go to church and say
In your soul
Ain't it high?
Oh, my common one
Oh, my storytime one
Oh, my high in the art of sufferin' one
Put your head on my shoulder
And you listen to the silence
Can you feel the silence?"

I learned the following today while watching the British property show Escape to the Country (https://www.youtube.com/user/42Sector)
Avalon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalon#:~:text=The%20name%20is%20generally%20considered,bearing%20(thing)%22).)
Avalon (/ˈævəlɒn/; Latin: Insula Avallonis; Welsh: Ynys Afallon, Ynys Afallach; Cornish: Enys Avalow; literally meaning "the isle of fruit [or apple] trees"; sometimes written Avallon or Avilion) is a mythical island featured in the Arthurian legend that first appeared in Geoffrey of Monmouth's influential 1136 Historia Regum Britanniae as a place of magic where King Arthur's sword Excalibur was made and later where Arthur was taken to recover from being gravely wounded at the Battle of Camlann. Since then, the island has become a symbol of Arthurian mythology, similar to Arthur's castle of Camelot.
The name is generally considered to be of Welsh origin (a Cornish or Breton origin is also possible), from Old Welsh, Old Cornish, or Old Breton aball or avallen(n), "apple tree, fruit tree" (cf. Welsh afal, from Proto-Celtic *abalnā, literally "fruit-bearing (thing)").[1][2][3][4][5]

It's an offshoot of the original Project Avalon forum, and sprung up as a result of some of the Thuban stuff many years back. Carol and Mudra, who are the most active posters there now, were relatively prominent on the old Avalon forums. I still check in there on occasion as well.

Avallon, a very old city in Burgundy.
Gaulish first (and maybe older,) and gallo-roman after.
Avallon gets its name from the Gallic "Aballo" (apple) which becomes in the 10th century "Avallonem Castrum". Dominating several valleys, the city played an important military role for several centuries. The first fortifications of this rocky outcrop date from the 9th and 10th centuries.

The Avalon Explosion and the power of 'maybe'
https://www.sott.net/image/s35/716654/super/Charnia_Spun.jpg
This Fossil Friday features the 569-556-million-year-old frond-like fossil Charnia from Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire (UK), an example of the abrupt appearance of the so-called Ediacaran biota in the latest Precambrian.
During this event, which has been called the Avalon Explosion (see Bechly 2024) and preceded the famous Cambrian Explosion, we find in three distinct assemblages the emergence of strange organisms that looked like aliens from a remote planet.( like Forum members...)
They were very much unlike any of the organisms that roamed our planet after the Cambrian Explosion and certainly did not represent the ancestors of the Cambrian bilaterian animal phyla. The Ediacaran organisms generally exhibited a quilted body like an air mattress, a glide symmetry, a fractal growth pattern, and lacked any visible organs for feeding or locomotion or any internal structure. A genuine enigma for biologists and paleontologists.

"Passengers"
A SciFi movie - with a romantic twist - from 2016. I am sure many have seen it. The starship that brings 5000+ people to another planet is 120 years underway.
The name of the starship is the "Avalon". There is an interesting question that can be asked here. However, if you did not - yet - watch the movie, then I would suggest to first watching it and thèn coming back here to give your "choice" and explain "why" that choice.
The question: what choice would you make in Jim's place. And why?
Looking forward to your replies.
