Washington police say drivers aren’t stopping for them

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Patrol says drivers are increasingly refusing to stop for troopers - and other law enforcement agencies also say this is becoming a common occurrence.

The Northwest News Network reports that from January 1 to May 17 of this year, the agency logged 934 failure-to-yield incidents. While the patrol didn’t track this in the past, veteran troopers say there’s been a dramatic uptick in drivers fleeing traffic stops.
“Something’s changed. People are not stopping right now,” said Sgt. Darren Wright, a WSP spokesperson with 31 years on the job. “It’s happening three to five times a shift on some nights and then a couple times a week on day shift.”

Local police departments are also seeing this behavior. The Puyallup Police Department logged 148 instances of drivers fleeing from officers from July 26, 2021 to May 18, 2022.
Asked if that represents a significant increase, Chief Scott Engle wrote in an email, “I could 1,000,000% say this is completely absolutely emphatically totally unusual.”

While a number of the highway killings are presumably targeted individuals. What if a new type of serial killer or group bent on creating chaos is immerging, hiding in the vastness of the interstate highway system? Would government suppress evidence of such given the vital economic role of the system?

Though the news doesn't address Washington State specifically, there has clearly been an increase of this type of violence here.

Highway shootings in one state nearly tripled in 2 years

In California, reports of shootings more than doubled in the last three years, jumping from 210 in 2019 to nearly 500 in the first 11 months of 2021. Hundreds of people were injured, according to highway patrol data obtained through a public records request. Fifty died.

In Michigan, where authorities started tracking the data only last year after they noticed an uptick, there were 67 in Detroit and its suburbs, a state police spokesman said.

And in Illinois, where there’s been such a surge in expressway shootings that the governor pleaded for them “to stop,” authorities launched a well-publicized response announcing arrests and introducing efforts to blunt the violence. Included were a public dashboard mapping every expressway shooting in the state since 2019 and a law named after Tamara Clayton, 55, a mail handler who was gunned down on her way to work three years ago. Her killing remains unsolved. The law called for installing high-definition license plate readers in dozens of spots on Chicago-area expressways.

While freeway violence isn’t new, Stonebraker said, the state had never before had that kind of jump. In a shooting two weeks before Morris' — on a section of freeway a few miles away — 23-month-old Jasper Wu was killed while he slept in his car seat. In February, Bay Area basketball legend Gene Ransom was killed on the same highway, Interstate 880.

In this lifetime, memory having seen nothing like it.
Every time looking at this particular animal reminds me of beast of legend and lore.
Revelation, selective, as nowhere near (all) seem aware of fundamental changes in social life that have and are occurring. Walking down a quiet street with the familiar rhythmic TV glow.
Superficially, nothing of fundamental daily life has changed, the proverbial curtain remains in place.

Start to wonder if its even worth mentioning any more. At least if taking the local neighborhood behavior as a barometer believed.

IMO this has been slowly eroding for decades.

100 years ago, the older generations were outraged by women wearing skirts that showed their ankles, and women smoking.

50 years ago, the older generations were outraged by promiscuity and couples living together out of wedlock (I remember back then the phrase "living in sin" bandied about a lot.

Certainly crime has always been with us, but there seems nowadays to be a resigned acceptance that this is how society is; it's no longer totally unacceptable to the masses, but it seems to many to be the norm. It really did accelerate in the 1980s under the Thatcher government when industry was destroyed, with the loss of many manual jobs, and benefits for the poor started to be squeezed. Things were no better under the 'Labour' government of crypto-Tory Tony Blair. Many people now no longer care about any responsibilities they have to society, only their rights; but a society with rights and no responsibilities is doomed to fail.

When I got round to reading The Protocols of the Elders of Zion - whoever it was who authored that - it certainly does seem that this has been closely followed as many of the ways to deteriorate society and peoples' lives have come to pass.

I wonder if the difference now is that so many are on edge after 2 years of the Coronacircus, and just when there seems to be a semblance of normality again, there is the spectre of war in Europe again in many people's minds?

Finally - yes Journeyman, I certainly think that 'an act of dark alchemic sorcery' has been unleashed on the world.

Social contract has layers. (I know I have been guilt of not reading a whole contract before signing)

Most likely takes a lot by surprised. Kind of like when one is skeptical of something (it's there, just in small print) until it happens to them. This is usually followed by a dawn of sorts.

Finding money on the ground usually means it’s your lucky day, but a Tennessee sheriff is warning people not to pick up folded dollar bills because they could contain a dangerous substance.

On two separate occasions, people picked up folded dollar bills off the floor of a gas station in Perry County and found a white powdery substance inside, according to a statement on the Perry County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. The substance later tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl.

“This is very dangerous, folks!” the statement says. “Please share and educate your children to not pick up the money.” Giles County Sheriff Kyle Helton also shared the warning on his department’s Facebook page. Helton told McClatchy News that he had heard about similar instances of folded dollar bills carrying dangerous substances happening around the state and country.

I like this thread. It is the combination of the decline of services and the following of authority that will be the defining summary of these years.

Personally, I find bringing up the social contract subject to be one of the most awakening topics on other people, and the biggest reason to promote non compliance.

Well, I do stop for police and first responders--I even slow down or stop for road workers. But what do the police expect when we've watched them stand down for the last two years? Did they think people would just continue to blindly "back the blue?" Although I know it's wrong to generalize, I also know why so many have lost respect for them. Interestingly enough, I got my first traffic ticket in my whole life last year. As it turns out, the highway patrol had been caught in a ticket scam on that same stretch of highway about 6 months earlier--and the same ones were just doing it again, with the same crooked judge. What an experience that was. I do see our social constructs crumbling, but so much of it has to do with abuse of power in many of our institutions, from government to medicine. My social contract is to myself, not some external force--so I will always try to do the right thing whether they enforce laws or not--but my perception of who the police really work for when the going gets tough has definitely changed. And I do think they would corral any of us into a camp if their city bosses told them to--that is truly breaking the social contract. So who broke that contract--was it everyday citizens or was it authority? I think I know, but I'll keep an open mind for sport.

Its an indication that the masses are getting more and more disgusted with authorities. I was apprehended at least 5 times the past year and fled. Had a good laugh. Was caught 3 times inmore than 20 years and was fined less than 2000 pesos. A lot cheaper than getting a drivers license. 😁
