Translate French 🇫🇷 Words Without Knowing French Using 3 Very Clever Tricks:

The only language you need is English. Let me teach you how to read French words without already knowing any French. Watch and I'll explain. Massive Francophobe? You should watch anyway, because the reasons why these tricks work raise some fascinating facts about the history of the English language. By inserting an extra S here or there, some French words magically become much more like their English equivalents (or "cognates"). Also, the clever deployment of a W can render even the most Gallic of words easily recognizable.

disclaimer: tricks don't work every time... but when they do, it is enormously satisfying.

Without "William_the_Conqueror" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_the_Conqueror) all 3 tricks would never have worked!

And with the Conquest of England ended, the paradox situation where the King of England is being addressed as the Duke of Normany by the King of France followed soon after. And eventually, it led to the Hundred Years War.

Imagine if you knew this before having mandatory French at school in the mid 1980s <<< I wish I could have seen above video back then

Most Dutch 🇳🇱 learn basics of German 🇩🇪, French 🇫🇷 & English 🇬🇧 (some schools even Latin & Greek) then after 1 year you are allowed to drop 1 language ... my choice was French! ... But if I knew above video I may have continued learning/studying the language longer ...

cheers,

My Italian is better than my French; when searching for a word in French I think what it is in Italian and then 'Frenchify' it - usually works! I'll watch the vids over the weekend - they might help to get my French up to scratch.

Random fact - Norman French was the language of English courts until the reign of Edward III in the 14th century, so for 300 years English people on trial in courts had no idea what was being said as it was all in French.

PS - I've just noticed the last vid you posted, it was recorded that William the Conqueror's body exploded as it was taken to his burial so I guess that's what it's about. What a dignified way to go!
