It comes from a norse word, i forgot exactly and can't look it up right now but i remember it was related to row, as in row a boat or rowing, and that's also related to Rus-land or the land of Rus, the land of the ones that row (boats)

And there are lots of references to Red in Russia for sure, historically even before the Soviets, but none of them have to do with the name of the land :)

It has to do with the root of the word, 'red' or 'beauty' or similar, "Kraskanya" is used as for example in Krasnoyar Polyana "red valley", or as in Krasnodar "pretty gift", if that word was root of the country's name, it would probably be named 'Krase' (as in Glory) :) lmao

while the root “ras” in “Rasputin” denotes breaking from ones current dwelling and in case of Rasputin also setting foot on a path that is etymologically “someone who left” or “someone who said bye”.
