Making the sign of the cross is absolutely fundamental to Catholic/Orthodox Christians, it is a powerful statement of belief and respect for the suffering Christ, also a talisman against evil for many believers, I recall this was the first thing I was taught as a 5 year old Catholic schoolboy, along with Catechism studies!

I think Gorbochov was one of those catalysts of history, I always thought he was a very reasonable man, intelligent and forward thinking, so very different to the hard drinking, severe Russian leaders who preceded him!
