What might be even more interesting is what animal life there may be down there, very much cut off in evolutionary terms from the rest of the environment.

It would pretty much function that way as an island in the middle of an ocean. Insects can be blown by the wind, even if they can't fly, but larger mammals or reptiles/amphibians would be quite isolated.
