Sorry, this carving/ sculpture is totally weird, left by the husband of a scottish minister, amongst many other weird objects, in the garden and lofts. This seems to depict monks acting like lemmings?
Help! Copied his photo. But how do I encapsulate it to be visible?
Cannot now figure out how to post these images, so apologise for anyone’s inconvenience.

What on earth is it? The minister’s husband was very visually creative, leaving lots of odd stuff around, including a carved fireplace.

I can't yet get past trying to work out if the forms are the product of someone who just wasn't much good at carving stone, or they really are hooded figures.
For me, that's a significant point to get past before I read much into or out of it.

Interesting art , I like it. I think you are correct in seeing a lemming symbol , the Christian cross very obviously displayed /depicted atop would possibly suggest monk or follower figurines falling over a cliff where they morph into phallic shapes. Also my first impression made me think of an udder in the stone shape. I think captivating art/sculpture does intrigue one’s imagination where it plays with ambiguous and possibly conflicting ideas and symbols.

It could be an expression of faith; you have one figure in front of the cross and facing it who seems to be staying put, the ones who have turned away from the cross are falling off the edge.
Interesting, thanks for sharing.

The amount of work in creating this rock carving is quite impressive for a non artisan, removing all that is to reveal what is left is very impressive.
The cross looks to be "inlay"....?
The grim reaper wore a hooded garment, perhaps its a simplest representation of GR falling back into hell.
.
Looking at the picture, without zoom, i cant pickout any tool marks to give any indication of method, prolly hammer and chisel, but i dont know.
.
It is a strange thing, that took a lot of work, for no one to see.

most will turn against Christ, just a few will remain in deep faith. that is what it looks like to me.

I found this Psalm below but it doesn't exactly mention monks.
Psalms 28:1
Of David.1 To you, LORD, I call; you are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit.

I thought the same thing, the figures 'going over the edge' almost seem to be on a waterwheel? So the person focused on the cross is exempt from the wheel of life/rebirth? Wouldn't be standard Christian theology :)
Also, there would have been 11 figures in total (one seems to be broken off bottom right)

Think you nailed it..The disciples/followers falling into earthly desires again.
Maybe the minister seeing himself as the one figure knelt facing (back turned from earthly) the cross

It appears that the figure nearest the cross is facing it, while the others have turned their back on the cross and are going to hell. Am I right that the figure nearest is facing it?

I have been researching the originator of this piece, he is extremely religious, and has secreted many controversial pieces throughout his old garden, and in the property. Some extremely disturbing. However, his skills into engraving scripts into stone are excellent, but he has since emigrated. The story is, however, still unravelling, hopefully to a good conclusion. Will post more artefacts if appropriate. Thank you all for your opinions

That's what I see. One figure bows towards the divine / Christian cross. This represents the spiritual life. The others, the majority turn away to pursue material concerns and in the process they fall, ever faster, sinking deeper into the material plane and in the process losing their humanity, until they are represented lass as a person than as a phallus, representing man's fall to the temptations of the flesh? There's also a sense of circularity in the falling figures, perhaps representing a repeating cycle?

Yeah i recon you could be right, its head tilts forward in the opposite direction to the others, and its shorter, almost like its kneeling before the cross........................RRR

Humanity is heading for the precipice!
It is only by acknowledging the Christ Consciousness and working with Love, Care and Compassion that we raise our vibrational frequency and so escape the endless loop of the Karmic wheel and the glamour of this material world.
