To me (complex) "psychology" is like breathing to me ... my mother studied Psychology at the University in Maastircht (https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl) 1974 up to 1977 when I was about 8 up to 11 years old ... she taught me some things at early age ... even how to question what I have been taught too and why having a "blind spot" can happen to everybody .. She later organized big protest marches and was many times of radio & tv .... She even had her own radio shows in Amsterdam ...later when I got older I did the same.

Here is where, I think, we may have largely the same view, which is at risk of semantic debate over "-isms".


What is being discussed as "Totalitarianism" is what I have taken to calling "Capitalism" for a number of reasons.


One could say that "totalitarian" applies to other kinds of regimes of an ancient, crude, and brutal kind. When discussed in the psychological sense, then, one modern theory is Totalitarian Democracy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totalitarian_democracy#:~:text=Totalitarian%20democracy%20is%20a%20term,decision%2Dmaking%20process% 20of%20the) (Israel 1951), which largely consists in making a mockery of your right to vote.


I veered towards "Capitalism" with the main meaning of an intricately-crafted form of psychological totalitarianism, issuing from that "Black Rock of the Ages", the Bank of England, founded in 1694. Almost immediately, it began a wave of offshore tax havens, and contraband, which usually did not mean the goods themselves were illegal, but smuggled without tax stamps. For instance a lot of trouble in Northern Ireland started over such a wine tax. This kept going for four hundred years until two bombs in the City of London got things sorted.

In the United States, the CIA is, ostensibly, a foreign intelligence agency guided by the State Department, by an unelected, appointed official, who has always followed the schemes of the Council on Foreign relations.

"Americans were surprised" however, to find that the CIA has a domestic co-intel role, from Mockingbird out to W. Casey's admission that their task was to make sure that nothing Americans believe in is real.

This, in essence, is simply an alignment with other foreign intelligence, the MI6 of Britain, as primarily influential to the CFR.


Capitalism gets worse, if, you take the stock phrase New World Order, it literally means something, it is one of the private NGOs registered in New York, founded in 1980 by ex-CIA. It actually was never very big, until recently, it has hooked into "Industrial Revolution 4.0" with that band of actors who support the tasteless "Happytalism".

So, I am attempting to use the term in a particularly English way, heavily conditioned by the London School of Economics. It may be true that there is a less-corrupt type of banking system which can operate perhaps what Russia intends as a "Market Economy"; I am not sure about this, and it is not the influential kind that went global as soon as ships could do it.


I suppose we have a type of fusion of Capitalism, Totalitarianism, and Fascism, which prefers to operate psychologically, using different voices for the "left or right" all running a machine that makes the rich dominant over the poor.

I would agree that Huxley was in an unusual position to understand "internationalist collective" and how the wars were an engineering project to re-define countries and banks. The German, formerly Prussian, Reichsbank, was copied almost note-for-note to make the Federal Reserve.

One of my favorite anecdotes is about a piece of money. The first American Federal Reserve Banks were all issuing their own currency for a brief period up to around 1922 or so. I saw a note from this period where, beside the printed "Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago", someone, in what was clearly the penmanship of the time, wrote "Bolshevik".

The internal America was pretty fiercely resistant to this nonsense, and then by around World War II, their brains start getting scrambled really hard.

Or, one could say, that Wall Street was instrumental in getting the Constitution passed, and New York always had a clique of exploitative financiers, who were resisted by most of the rest of the country. But then these same people are later grateful for "British help". Seen in this light, the Constitution was a vehicle for the payment of war debts, but even so, for a long time, they would not finance the government by allowing Treasury Bonds into the banks.


Just like the Bank of England is an effectively permanent, immortal influence, ever since 1863, Lincoln's Empire began financing the government by putting Bonds in the banks. Then, there were a series of mostly-engineered catastrophes which allowed planners to scream for something that would become the Fed, along with the baptism of "Corporations" as "People".


Another expression I have seen is that the West is in a Soft Kill system, compared to other exports such as Bolshevism using Hard Kill, which of course is what most westerners will begin to associate with "fascism" or "totalitarianism", and forget about the psychological kind and start believing their own lies.

Burning Books In A Brave New 1984 World

The Venn diagram above perfectly captures the zeitgeist of our current dystopian world better than any academic drivel disguised as a scientific study or any regime media produced propaganda disguised as journalism. In fact, these three novels capture everything that has gone terribly wrong in our world, and I put the blame at the feet of totalitarian governments and an apathetic fearful populace who went along because it was the easiest path to follow.

These three novels, considered among the top 100 novels ever written, were penned between 1931 and 1953, during three distinct periods, which are reflected in the themes and story lines of their dystopian worlds. They were supposed to be works of fiction, providing warnings of what could happen if we made the wrong choices and trusted the wrong people. Sadly, they became user manuals for today’s authoritarian dictators in how to control, condition and cow a population of indoctrinated sheep, as displayed during the covid pandemic exercise.



Knowing the fate of the three protagonists in these novels does not provide much hope for those trapped in the same nightmarish dystopia we are experiencing today. The three protagonists in these dystopian novels have more similarities than differences. Montag, the fireman who burns books in Fahrenheit 451, is the protagonist who begins to question his life, his profession, and why he and most of the population are deeply unhappy. His curiosity about the books he previously burned leads him into conflict with his family, his bosses, and society. He murders his boss and becomes a fugitive among the other rebels who love books and refuse to knuckle under to the totalitarians blowing up and burning their world.



John the Savage, who is a complete outsider in the “civilized” World State culture, is the main protagonist in Brave New World (a line from Shakespeare’s The Tempest). His knowledge of Shakespeare provides him with the rhetorical ammunition to hold his own in a debate with the controller of the World State, Mustapha Mond, but Mond’s totalitarian state where stability and happiness outweigh individuality, emotional connections and humanism, win in the end. John’s weakness leads to him giving in to his desires and ultimate suicide, much like a Shakespearean character.



Winston Smith, a Party member who commits thoughtcrimes by keeping a diary, believing The Party misleads about history, and questioning The Party orthodoxy, is the non-charismatic protagonist of 1984. His passive resistance against the totalitarian state becomes more overt and ultimately puts him into the clutches of O’Brien and the Thought Police, who inflicted physical and psychological torture upon Smith, until he breaks and becomes an emotionally deadened, loving follower of The Party.



Three of the greatest novels of all time, all written within twenty years of each other, had similar themes, analogous protagonists, and equally disheartening endings. It is certainly clear the warnings of these brilliant men were not heeded by the masses, mainly due to the techniques described in the novels regarding population control and suppression. The overlapping themes in the three novels have played out in various forms over the last several decades, as our world has slowly descended into a dystopia of our own making. There are several key themes in these novels that are perfectly aligned with our current predicament: (1) Technology as a Means of Control; (2) Censorship; (3) Individuality Versus State Control; (4) Truth, Happiness, and Materialism; (5) Dangers of Totalitarianism.

Technology as a Means of Control
“It didn’t come from the Government down. There was no dictum, no declaration, no censorship, to start with, no! Technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure carried the trick, thank God.” – Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451



Technology is the central source of societal evils in Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. It is the fundamental reason for the decline in reading by the populace and the means for destroying books with high tech flamethrowers. Bradbury’s view is that the advancement in technology is ultimately destructive to society and humanity. Bradbury’s vision of the future was spot on, with wall sized televisions and radio earbuds providing endless entertainment and distraction to the population, making books obsolete. Television was in its infancy, with small black and white screens and little programming in the early 1950’s.

Today, even the poor have big screen HDTVs on their walls and everyone at the gym has earbuds with their playlist blasting. No need for human interaction or reading a book. Thirty percent of Americans haven’t read a book in the last year, and a significant percentage of the 70% who say they have are lying. I’ve had friends and co-workers who acted proud of not having read a book since college.



The dumbing down of Americans and addiction to our gadgets can be greatly attributed to the “advancement’ of technology. Super-fast automobiles and a Mechanical Hound programmed to hunt down and kill fugitives are other examples of technology in Bradbury’s novel of addictive contraptions and robots used by totalitarian regimes for nefarious purposes. Today expensive fast cars are the narcissistic status symbols of shallow people trying to impress their friends and neighbors. Robots capable of killing and attacking humans are a reality and now Artificial Intelligence programmed robots are theoretically capable of thinking independently and potentially destroying the world.



Maybe Bradbury’s most strident warning was regarding nuclear technology, having written the novel only eight years after atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, and the Soviet Union testing their 1st bomb in 1949. In the novel, two nuclear wars had already occurred, and it ends with an atomic bomb dropped on the city. Today, as Biden and his neo-con handlers push for war with Russia and China, the potential for nuclear war is the highest in fifty years. These psychopaths actually think they can “win” a nuclear confrontation with Russia and China.



Huxley’s fundamental warning in Brave New World is the danger of handing control of new powerful technologies to authoritarian minded men, who use the technology to control the population, rather than benefit society. The strict control over reproduction through technological manipulation, removal of female ovaries, and conditioning techniques, to produce the desired number of people in each class dehumanizes the entire population.

The leaders of the World State use technology to promote their desired outcome of stability and a compliant populace who are conditioned to think they are happy. The technological entertainment machines produce harmless leisure and high levels of consumption and production, producing the desired stability for Mustapha Mond and his apparatchiks. Technology is used to develop drugs like Soma, encouraged by the state to be taken as a means to increase happiness, complacency, and apathy towards seeking truth or meaning in life. Creating a superficial world through technological inventions like “feelies” insures a sedated controllable population of sheep.

The ability to grow fetuses in high tech digital pods is already being planned and designed. Technology exists to manipulate DNA to produce a desired human product. Everything Huxley warned about regarding reproduction is going to happen, with the horrible consequences to follow. We were warned but have allowed sociopaths to gain control of our government, universities, media, corporations, and medical industry.

The worldwide baby killing business, using high tech murder gadgets, and technology created pharmaceuticals to murder babies quietly, allows anyone who feels inconvenienced by pregnancy to terminate it. Down syndrome babies can be killed, so the lives of the parents aren’t disrupted. With further “advancement” in technology, we’ll be able to terminate babies that aren’t the right gender or may have an IQ below 120. Isn’t technology grand? The birthing pods envisioned by Huxley are now a reality.



The purpose of entertainment technology in Brave New World was to create a false sense of happiness in order to maintain stability in society. In reality, if you keep the masses dumbed down and distracted, they will never consider revolution against the controllers of society. This method has been utilized brilliantly by the ruling class to keep the American masses amused, distracted, entertained, and ignorant regarding their civic duty to ensure our society functions in a way in which all citizens have a say in how community standards are designed.

Allowing a small cabal of unelected psychopaths to control our government, media, corporations, and educational institutions, while the masses are entertained by their X-boxes, i-gadgets, Tiktok, Facebook, Twitter, HDTVs, Hollywood, sports, gambling, and porn, has gutted our culture and allowed the ruling class to accumulate obscene levels of wealth and power. Having the sheep-like masses distracted and ignorant is the kind of stability our current day controllers’ desire.



When they are not distracted and amused by technology, current day variations of Soma have been created through the use of medical and biotechnology to enrich the sickcare industry, pill pushing pharma industry whores, and the regime media hawking the pills, while sedating the masses and keeping them in a permanent drug induced stupor. They start them young, with millions of boys diagnosed with ADD by women who want boys to act like girls, forced to take Ritalin, Adderall, and a myriad of other Big Pharma concoctions that turn normal rambunctious boys into passive zombies who do as instructed in the public-school indoctrination centers.



Once they attain adulthood, it’s on to Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, or dozens of other technologically create anti-depressants, designed to sedate and numb the masses from the reality of their leaders pillaging and looting their wealth through taxation, inflation, and corruption. The richest country on earth has the highest antidepressant usage on the planet because the average person’s existence is so shallow, meaningless, and devoid of value, they feel the need to escape reality. This is particularly true of older white women, with more than 25% of them taking anti-depressants.

It’s not a coincidence these mentally ill Karen’s are the easily manipulated dupes who vote for Biden, wear pussy hats, cheer for abortion, believe the bull**** climate change narrative, were gung-ho for the Big Pharma toxic jabs, and still wear masks while driving alone. The ultimate Soma-like creation has been the mRNA technological “miracle”, which the ruling class used as a test case in ruling the world through coercion and fear, while enriching themselves, and jump starting their de-population agenda. They had to change the definition of vaccine to convince the masses they were taking a vaccine, and not an untested experimental gene altering therapy, that has killed far more than it saved.

Dystopian technological totalitarianism has been epitomized by the picture of Big Brother monitoring everything the proles did, said or thought. By means of telescreens and hidden microphones, the Party is able to monitor most of its members and/or invoke fear into the hearts of the masses. Orwell essentially created the concept of a dystopian Zoom seventy years before its invention.

Orwell envisioned a centralized Party exerting control over the means of production, sources of information, surveillance machinery, and the fearsome torture apparatus used to keep the proles in line. His warning was based on Stalin’s Soviet Union. Instead of heeding Orwell’s warning, we allowed totalitarian psychopaths to use 1984 as an instruction manual. The use of technology to monitor and control the masses has exceeded any tyrannical apparatus Orwell’s mind could envision in its darkest recesses.



Today, surveillance cameras are universally utilized by the State to control the proles, collect fines for minor vehicle infractions, and prosecute anyone who breaks one of their millions of ridiculous laws. Your phones listen to every word you say, using them to bilk you out of your money through targeted ads. Even worse, as revealed by Edward Snowden in his book Permanent Record, the NSA can access your computer and phone in real time and store everything you say, text, or type.

They essentially have a permanent technological record of every communication by every person on the planet. And if you are deemed a threat or dissent from their approved narrative, they can and will use that information against you, without providing context. They can make anyone into a “criminal” whenever necessary for their purposes. Now they have the technology to turn your vehicle on or off and gain complete control of the vehicle. I’m sure this will work out well when you piss off the powers that be.

By deplatforming the critical thinking dissenters, silencing the truth tellers, destroying the livelihoods of those who have been proven right, and purposefully misleading the masses to further their agenda, these totalitarian psychopaths have far exceeded what the Party accomplished in Orwell’s 1984. And now, for the coup de grace, the ruling class plans to roll out CBDCs as a means to capture complete control over the proles.

Once your social credit score drops below the acceptable level, due to your brazen disregard in accepting the approved narrative, your ability to transact will be cut-off. No food or fuel for you, until you bow down to your masters and beg for their mercy. We will have allowed technological handcuffs and shackles to be placed upon us as we rot in our self-made techno-gulag. We’ve chosen momentary faux happiness over enduring hard-earned freedom. Orwell warned us and we failed to heed the cautionary tale.

The twentieth century was an eventful century. The rise of the metropolitan way of life made people feel disconnected from community ties. They sought connection and meaning in mass political movements that subsequently developed into totalitarian regimes. Then came the Spanish Civil War, the Holocaust, the Cold War and the Berlin Wall. Two authors lived through these horrors: they struggled with the question of how life could retain meaning and meaning in a world permeated with suffering, horror and powerlessness.

These are George Orwell, the famous author of 1984 and Animal Farm – and Viktor Frankl, author of Man's Search for Meaning . Orwell started out as a socialist and journalist: he fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. Orwell experienced how his fellow fighters were suddenly renamed ideological enemies by the Soviets, when it suited the communists better. Truth and idealism turned out to be completely subordinate to power. Frankl was a psychiatrist in Vienna, was given a chance to flee to the US, but stayed in Austria out of religious inspiration. Because of his Jewish origins, he was imprisoned in concentration camps by the Nazis. In this extreme circumstance he investigated how people find meaning and meaning in their existence.


Frankl: Hope and Love from Suffering

in Man's Search For Meaning , published in 1946, Frankl's tragic yet hopeful investigation into meaning is drawn from his experiences in a concentration camp, where he and fellow prisoners cut a trench in the frozen ground:
We were working in a trench. The dawn that loomed before us was gray, just like the sky above us. I spoke silently to my wife, or perhaps I struggled with the reason for my suffering, my slow death. With the last strength in my mind, I fought the hopelessness of impending death – I felt my spirit piercing the darkness. I was aware of my spirit transcending that hopeless, meaningless world, and somewhere I heard a triumphant 'Yes' in answer to my question about the existence of an ultimate goal destination.” - Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, (London 2004) p.51

The hope, then, is that the sad state of being, the utter dejection and desperation that Frankl found himself confronted with, can be transcended in one clear moment of the mind, a beacon of light in a sea of ​​darkness. The author means the latter literally, because while this inner certainty rose within him, the lights went on in a farm further away - a warm glow drove away the mist and gloom.

When ultimate desperation loomed before Frankl and he threatened to sink into a despair from which he would not recover, he thought of his wife. His wife was already dead at that time, murdered by the Germans, but he did not know that. He thought about her face, felt strengthened and encouraged by her gaze – his wife's face was brighter than the rising sun at that moment. At that moment he realized that the poets had been right all along: the highest attainable goal in life is love.

Those who have nothing left except love can still find resignation, even if only for a moment, by being aware of that love. “In a situation of complete devastation, where a person cannot express himself by taking action in a positive way; where the only thing left to do is to endure suffering, albeit honorably; in that situation a person can find satisfaction through loving contemplation of the image he carries within him of his beloved.”1Frankl connects this to the Biblical saying that the angels lose themselves in contemplating eternal glory. In other words, that love is something transcendent for us, something higher.

The book consists of two parts. In the first part he describes his experiences in the concentration camps. The second part is more theoretical – it explores the philosophical and psychological significance of his experiences and puts them together into a therapeutic framework. Frankl calls his finding 'logotherapy' and opposes the current 'psychotherapy'. His approach not only delves into the emotions of the subject - 'How do I make my client/patient feel better?', but is also about: 'How does the world work and where does the client/patient find the place where can he come into his own?'

In this second part, Frankl reduces finding meaning in life to three dimensions. First, doing a significant job. Secondly, a bond with a special person – more or less love, as just described. Third, the attitude one takes toward inevitable suffering. Frankl explicitly states that you should avoid unnecessary suffering wherever possible; At the same time, it is clear from his book that he finds the meaning of life strongest where suffering is experienced with as much dignity as possible.


Orwell: despair and powerlessness from suffering

George Orwell seems to reach a very related yet opposite conclusion in 1984 . Where Frankl draws dignity, profundity and even hope from suffering, Orwell introduces suffering to illustrate absolute powerlessness and total hopelessness. The question now comes down to which of the two is more convincing.

The book is about Winston Smith, a subject of IngSoc, a totalitarian one-party state that rules a third of the world. War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength – these are the official slogans. Slowly but surely, Winston examines his personal doubts about this regime, and his eyes meet O'Brien's. In that moment, O'Brien gains his trust: Winston feels that they can count on each other. Ultimately, it turns out that O'Brien was a senior Party official all along, and that the maturation of Winston's inner resistance was carefully monitored and even cultivated by the Party.

The story culminates in an ultimate dialogue in O'Brien's office in which both put their cards on the table. The Party works differently, O'Brien explains in total calm. Winston will be worked on as long as necessary until he sees the light of his own accord and loves the Party. And then – just when his thoughts are clear – he himself will beg to be executed in the pure state of mind.

Winston rejects the Party's plans, saying that hatred and control are not strong enough to sustain a political system. “Do you believe that some cosmic principle will oppose our goal?” ask O'Brien. “A form of inspiration that man cannot do without, something that is deep within? You are mistaken! Because we have the power and from that power we determine what man is .”

If living from hate proves to be more exhausting than living from love, O'Brien explains, then this is still no problem for keeping the system running. The pace of life will be accelerated and, if necessary, people will only be old at the age of thirty. The party determines who, where and when reproduction takes place. Not a single dissident thought escapes the Party and even the orgasm will be abolished with neurological interventions. The two views compared to each other

If we return to Frankl from this dialogue, we would relate to suffering completely differently. To begin with, Frankl says that the past is stronger than the present: he writes of “indelible footprints in the path of time.” Even if you perish in a concentration camp from hunger, thirst, disease and exhausting work, you can think back to your past, to the happiness you experienced there, and no one will ever be able to take this away from you. Simply because it existed, the present would be stronger than the past: it could no longer be erased. The memories of the past continue to inspire the present.

Orwell comes to the opposite conclusion. “He who controls the past controls the future – he who controls the present controls the past.” The Party is constantly trying to change the past and rewrite entire archives. Even canonical books and classical literature are given new words and specific terms adapted to the emotional life of the totalitarian society. Winston is brainwashed into doubting his own memories. O'Brien makes a point of making Winston believe that two plus two can equal five. Truth and untruth appear to be completely subordinate to power and powerlessness.

But even apart from this specific power relationship between Winston and O'Brien, the memories of the beautiful past can also make the present more difficult to bear. The beauty of the wonderful relationship that is now over, or the great job you have lost. And when this loss is self-inflicted, the guilt can add to the unbearableness of the present.

The past can be used by the ruler as a source to increase and intensify his power. In 1984 this is in the form of Immanuel Goldstein – an intellectual who criticized IngSoc and the Party in the distant past. No longer “what can I expect from life?”, but: “What does life expect from me?” If you are in a situation of total oppression and surveillance and have no opportunity to positively express your individuality - such as in a concentration camp - enduring suffering with dignity is the highest possible thing. This then is what life awaits from us.

However, the fact that you still have something to 'prove' to life, that life wants to 'speak to you' in that sense with your actions, presupposes that you still see life as an 'equal' conversation partner. Once you are sure that life will no longer offer anything, you lose all sense of having to show, explain, prove or justify anything to this life.
Anyone who uses reason and looks beyond emotions will see that the Netherlands is turning into a densely regulated retirement colony, with a disproportionately large part of the youth population consisting of immigrants who are difficult to integrate. In order to be able to bear all this economically, it is necessary to make the earning potential of the Netherlands an absolute priority, but entrepreneurship is being paralyzed by climate restrictions, nitrogen restrictions and unaffordable energy prices.

If we look at the facts, it turns out that there was more hope for Viktor Frankl than for us. After all, the military collapse of Nazi Germany was inevitable - for him it was a matter of buying time to survive the concentration camp. However, all the time we waste is to our disadvantage, because the Netherlands is embedded in a constellation of countries and international policy structures that are sick in the same bed.

Unlike the Nazi regime, which was under international siege, our current power structure will not end anytime soon. The control over our lives and thoughts is increasingly digital in nature and is carried out by artificial intelligence. Suicide as an escape from suffering, an escape from a totalitarian order, is given a positive appreciation by Orwell, as a last act of sovereign will – whether it succeeds or not. Frankl, on the other hand, seems to view suicide as a decision born of a weak will and a lack of heroism. He gives the example of a monkey receiving injections as part of scientific studies. The monkey cannot understand the meaning of this suffering. And just like that, man cannot rule out the possibility that there is a higher dimension - which is incomprehensible to today's people - that gives meaning to our suffering. This perspective presents us with the choice for life as a groundless decision: “There is no practical evidence that suffering has meaning, but I believe it theoretically.”


The meaning of suffering

Every person is in the cockpit of their own life. The information you receive, the experiences that impose themselves on you, even the reflection on what will happen in the future. All this is forcing itself on YOU and YOU have to do something with it.

Whether you want to or not: you will in any case experience the effect of all this on your mind. This can be excruciating at times, and can even create situations where the net value of life becomes negative. Where it would literally be better if you were gone.

Frankl then says that you must undergo this suffering with dignity: you must find meaning in it and, if necessary, create meaning in it. Something bigger, something higher, something external imposes this, and if you can find it, it pulls you through the experience of suffering. This can even be done by imagining yourself as a laboratory monkey, who cannot understand the higher purpose of the torture.

However, this presupposes that the final word does not belong to the suffering subject and there is something problematic in that. The suffering person is the only one who really knows how heavy suffering is for him and therefore the only one who can make decisions about what life still has to offer and what the chances are that it will get better.

Logotherapy presupposes that in the most excruciating state one retains an internal will that can, either through projection or contemplation, produce something meaningful to that individual. That valuable thing cannot eliminate the extreme suffering, but it does have its own right to exist - it offers something to hold on to. This right to exist remains valid even in situations where the individual must conclude that the net value of his existence is negative. However, Orwell shows that this internal will is not sovereign and can be taken over by the person in power in a situation of powerlessness - in O'Brien's view, that is even the goal of the Party and of all power structures.

It could just as easily happen that those in power torture and brainwash you. Literally pulling you apart and sewing them back together in a form that pleases the Party. After that torture you will still wish for death; you will become a vapor that dissolves into the atmosphere. Even your birth details will be erased – it will literally be as if you never existed.


Conclusions

Reading 1984 makes it clear that it is important to gain power. Those who are powerless can be subjected to torture and ultimately even thoughts are not safe. Those in power can create a world in which freedom never returns.

For those who are powerless, nobly enduring suffering can be the heroic choice. Often the only net result is that you grant the ruler the sadistic pleasure of torture for longer, and put yourself through a longer and more intensive course of suffering.
