This new thread is clearly needed. :flower:
To start it off, here's a short video by The Duran in which Alexander Mercouris (who suspects the possibility of US influence in the protests) explains some of the historical context for the extraordinary events unfolding there right now. Some of the scenes have been extraordinary, with over a million people taking to the streets.

Netanyahu suspends judicial reform
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the suspension of the controversial judicial overhaul, after months of massive nationwide demonstrations.
In a statement on Monday evening, Netanyahu said that he ordered a “timeout” on the controversial legislation until after the Knesset recess, in order “to give a real opportunity for real dialogue.”
He condemned “a minority of extremists that are willing to tear our country to shreds, leading us to civil war and calling for refusal of army service,” which he called “a terrible crime.”
Earlier, local media reported that the Israeli PM held lengthy discussions on the matter overnight with his political allies. The reform is a key demand of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. His Otzma Yehudit party has just six seats in the Knesset, but if it leaves the governing coalition, Netanyahu will lose his majority and have to call another election.
The announcement comes after Netanyahu fired his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, who challenged the reform, arguing that it threatens national security. The move added fuel to the protests, with hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets across the country.
As the protests intensified, resulting in clashes with police, Israeli President Isaac Herzog urged the governing coalition “to stop legislation immediately,” adding that the unrest is threatening the nation’s security, economy, and society.

Israel’s largest labor union, the Histadrut, called for a general strike on Monday. The strike shut down the Ben Gurion international airport in Tel Aviv, much of Israeli healthcare, and even embassies and consulates around the world.
The reform was meant to limit the power of the Supreme Court to rule against the legislative and executive branches of government, while granting the governing coalition a majority on the committee that appoints judges. The proposal met fierce opposition, with opponents describing the overhaul as an attack on democracy.

One has to mistrust all uprisings these days, as even those starting with just grievances may be used against the people. In this video The Duran hint that for all his obvious weaknesses, the demise of Netanyahu is not necessarily a good thing and may be even abetted by the globalists given his strong relationships with Russia and China and skills as a diplomat. Does he see the writing on the wall and therefore need to be eliminated ?

No progress made to reach compromise on judicial overhaul: Gantz
Israel’s former defense minister and leader of the National Unity Party, Benny Gantz, said on 1 May that negotiations aimed at reaching a compromise on the government’s judicial overhaul plan have made no progress.
“The negotiations aren’t progressing at all on any issue, particularly not that of the Judicial Selection Committee,” Gantz said during a meeting with his party in the Knesset.
“We will not allow politicians to control the appointment of judges because this amounts to political judges,” he said, echoing the opposition’s concerns that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government aims to transform ‘Israeli democracy’ into a full-blown dictatorship.
Gantz and his National Unity Party “will not compromise” on this position, the former defense minister said. Negotiations cannot continue indefinitely, Gantz added.
At the end of March, Netanyahu responded to the growing protests by announcing a postponement of the judicial overhaul plan until the next Knesset vote in May.
The prime minister said at the time: “When there’s an opportunity to avoid civil war through dialogue, I, as prime minister, am taking a timeout for dialogue,” pledging to reach a “broad consensus” by the first Knesset summer session.
However, just two days ago, the Knesset reopened for the summer – with the first session taking place on 1 May and resulting in “a rowdy mudslinging match between coalition and opposition over the government’s [overhaul] plans,” The Times of Israel reported.
“You talk only about dialogue, but at the talks say, ‘No, no, no, no.’ I would be happy to hear what you do agree to … I call on you to listen, come to your senses, chart a new course, and enter into real talks with us to try to reach agreements,” Netanyahu told lawmakers during the session.
As attempts at dialogue fail, tensions within Israeli society remain high. Moreover, large anti-government protests have continued and remain ongoing.
Recently, these demonstrations have been met with massive counter-protests by supporters of Netanyahu and his overhaul plans.
Four days ago, tens of thousands of far-right Israelis flooded the streets in support of the prime minister.
“I am deeply moved by the tremendous support,” Netanyahu said via Twitter.
If Netanyahu moves forward with the overhaul, as planned for this month, the situation is likely to explode once again.

Mod note from Bill:
Dear Friends, I've just moved 136 posts from this thread to a new one, provisionally titled Israel vs Hamas: the Middle East at War? (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?122055-Israel-vs-Hamas-the-Middle-East-at-War)
This thread will remain open, dealing with Israel's internal politics, controversies, protests and difficulties (as with all the 'Turmoil' threads). Meanwhile, what has developed in the last 48 hours has all the hallmarks of a new regional war with major geopolitical implications, and so it's now clear this is an entirely different and important standalone topic.

I wasn't sure where to post this ,I didn't want to distract from the news in the brilliant "Israeli vs Hamas thread " Maybe it could go in "Identity Politics " I thought :idea:or a whole new thread about masks could be the way ?
Anyhow the Israeli Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant , was seen on t.v. , with one of those weird possible mask malfunctions that American politicians have been known to have . One commentator said that Netanyahu had similar recently also .

From Deutche Welle, massive protest against the Netanyahu goverment for it's failure to negotiate the release of the hostages, for it's violence against the Gazans, for it's failure to make Israelis safe.
