I'm looking for an alternative as a backup to the one above.

What do you use to purify the water in an SHTF scenario?

Cheers,

I've got a couple of bottles - similar to this (https://basecampfood.com/products/lifestraw-go-650ml?currency=GBP&variant=39307113365591&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9M_uhdfU_gIVx57tCh1ArgKmEAQYGyABEgKqfvD_BwE) - from ebay and they weren't so expensive (10 years ago) - hope they don't have a 'use by' date - don't think they would - haven't looked at them for years... if I remember right they can each purify 500 litres of water...

just in case there's a desperate need..... this is useful to know...

I just finished reading the above thread and it also gave me some good backup ideas.

Thank you.

I have recently upgraded to the Clearly Filtered (https://www.clearlyfiltered.com/pages/performance-data-for-the-clearly-filtered-water-pitcher-and-filter) ( filter/pitcher ). It was far and away the best I could find.

Generally I use a water store, they have enormous filtration systems, but since covid the water is terrible and the water stores can no longer be relied upon. I don't know if it is because they are having difficulty sourcing supplies, or what. I just know I had to take a step toward being sustainably at the ready at home, finding the best option I could possibly find in a mobile filtration system. This is what I chose. I can report back again once I begin using it.

Impressive specs.

Please report back with your findings.

I currently use a three stage water filter underneath the sink. It's pretty good.

One thing it doesn't do is Fluoride.

This is brilliant in it's simplicity, following the earth's natural filtration system.

I'm on well water and use a five gallon capacity auto-feed water distiller in the home to purify the water of all contaminants. I do not want inorganic dissolved minerals, bacteria, or any other contaminants in my drinking and cooking water.

In an emergency, I have a backup ZeroWater pitcher with filters. It actually filters water to zero ppm but it is not designed to remove bacteria. "The ZeroWater 5-stage filtration system is designed to be used with municipally treated, potable drinking water. It does not directly remove bacteria or viruses, but it is very good at removing other contaminants such as metals and Total Dissolved Solids (TDSs) from the drinking water."

For survival purposes, I don't think I've read anyone suggest Urine Therapy, or "looping", as an option. There's a whole thread on the subject for those who may be interested:

How about using the process of making colloidal (ionic) silver to make water safer to drink? It is not recommended to use impure water to make colloidal silver. However, in a survival situation where the quality of water is in question, the method of making colloidal silver may be a way to make a glass of water safer to drink. All you need is a glass of water, a 9 volt battery, two rods of pure silver (.999 pure), and about one hour. See picture below.

Here's a simple way to make high quality colloidal silver in a glass using pure, distilled water:

Newly Discovered PRIMITIVE WATER FILTER! 100% Effective(14:37)

nSBwJNDDUfc

the logic (in my own words as I see it after watching it a couple of times) is that trees take up water - any old water - clean / cleanish / dirty / contaminated.....water then that water is moved up through the roots and then the branches becoming purified for the outer areas like the leaves, flowers, fruit....and the structure of the wood is the ready made filter ...

what is xylem (https://study.com/learn/lesson/xylem-overview-functions-structure-effects-cohesion-transpiration.html#:~:text=Xylem%20is%20the%20vascular%20tissue%20of%20plants%20responsible%20for%20 transporting,which%20transports%20sugar%20and%20nutrients.)

Xylem is the vascular tissue that transports water and dissolved minerals in plants. It is also the main component of wood. These vessels are critical for the survival of plants and their proper function depends on the unique properties of water.

According to the CDC, waterborne disease killed over six thousand people last year in the US alone. Waterborne pathogens such as e. coli, cryptosporidium, and giardia are prevalent in many surface water sources. There are several primitive methods for water purification including surface wells (gypsy well), boiling, and other primitive water filters which utilize some combination of course substrate, plant materials, and charcoal. I recently found a research article from MIT (link below) that showed the xylem tissue of gymnosperms effectively filtered out all bacteria from contaminated water. In this video I set up a filter using those findings but also, using a never before seen method using grape vines as both a siphon and filter in one. A lab analysis confirmed the presence of e. coli bacteria in the water to be filtered. The water that passed through the grape vines had no detectable e. coli bacteria! You can't do any better than that with the best whole house water filter. This has practical uses in backpacking, survival situations, wilderness living, camping, etc.
