Holiday consumption mirrors strong internal impetus of Chinese economy

"I knew there would be a lot of tourists, but I never expected so many," said Li Xin, who runs a B&B hotel near the Longmen Grottoes, a tourist site boasting a history of more than 1,500 years in Luoyang, central China's Henan province.

According to Li, the hotel had been fully booked half a month before the May Day holiday.

"We have a full house every day, and customers have to wait for a table during peak time," said Lu Jun, who works at a restaurant in a shopping mall in Chaoyang district, Beijing, adding that there was an obvious surge in the number of diners during the May Day holiday.

China's consumer market has witnessed an all-around growth during the five-day holiday as people were gratified by seasonal and quality products, featured and experiential services, as well as innovative and intelligent consumption.

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT), domestic trips during the May Day holiday this year jumped 70.83 percent year on year, and tourism revenue soared 128.9 percent from a year ago. Besides, sales of key retail and catering companies during the holiday increased by 18.9 percent from the days in 2022.

The remarkable performance mirrored the vitality and potential of the Chinese consumption market, and witnessed the strong internal impetus of the Chinese economy.

On May 2, a camping site in Mentougou district, Beijing welcomed a number of visitors. "It's fun to be here because I can get together with my friends while taking my child closer to nature," said Zhang Jia, who drove more than two hours to the site from Beijing's Chaoyang district.

During the May Day holiday, more than 9.12 million tourist trips were made to the Chinese capital, which led to tourism revenue of 13.46 billion yuan ($1.95 billion). Both the two figures exceeded the 2019 level, registering a strong recovery in the city's cultural and tourism consumption.

MOFCOM statistics showed that China saw a 24.4 percent increase in sales nationwide in petroleum products, a 20.9 percent up in automobiles, an 18.4 percent growth in clothing, a 16.5 percent expansion in cosmetics, and a 13.9 percent rise in home appliances.

Besides, the passenger flow and turnover of national demonstration pedestrian streets increased by 121.4 percent and 87.6 percent, respectively, compared with the same period last year, while sales of key catering enterprises increased by 57.9 percent year on year, it said.

According to MCT estimates, Chinese people made 274 million domestic trips during the five-day break that began on April 29, up over 19 percent from 2019 before the COVID-19 outbreak. Tourism revenue reached nearly 148.06 billion yuan, recovering to the pre-pandemic level in 2019.

From commodities to services, and online shopping to brick-and-mortar malls, new scenarios kept emerging during the May Day holiday, which spurred people's will to consume and injected new vitality into the market.

At the Liangjiang International Film City, a tourist attraction in southwest China's Chongqing municipality, a live-action performance was staged at night during the holiday. Tourists were wandering there in traditional costumes to experience the charm of the local culture.

"Today, we can not only sightsee, join entertainment activities and taste delicious food at tourist attractions, but also experience local history and culture in an immersive manner. This just enriches the tourism experience," said a tourist named Sun Wei, who was enjoying the performance.

"Holiday consumption shows an obvious trend of upgrading, with emerging new scenarios and models. It mirrored the personalized and diversified demand upgrade of Chinese consumers," said Zhang Jixing, deputy director of the market research department of the Academy of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

The consumption during the May Day holiday indicated a rising propensity to consume, which heralded that the consumer market would keep recovering in the long run, Zhang said, adding that consumption is expected to play a bigger role in driving China's economic growth.

According to him, improved employment, which was revealed by an obvious drop in the surveyed urban unemployment rate in March, is conducive to increasing residents' income and enhancing their consumption capability. He believes that emerging scenarios and models will further spur people's will to consume.

The propensity to consume of Chinese residents stood at 62 percent in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from a year ago. From the perspective of medium and long-term development, China is in a stage of rapid consumption upgrade, enjoying bright prospects in the long run.

Text:

The most important moment in a young person’s life:

13 million high-school graduates will be taking the college entrance exam (“gaokao”) in a few days in China. 😱

The top universities accept only about 50,000 students — that’s 0.4% acceptance rate. Ouch!

In the end, about 10 million will end up going to college, so it’s not too bad for the rest.

But great innovations and progress will depend on those 0.4% crème de la crème.

This exam tradition is almost 2000 years old in China. It’s the basis of meritocracy.

Text:

By the way. Gaokao is not like SAT in the US.

Gaokao is on another level. It involves two days of exams that have multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and essay questions.

And the subjects are everything under the Sun:

Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Chinese language, history, philosophy, foreign language (English) and so on.

The exam depends on what the student wishes to study in college. Math is one of the compulsory subjects.

A sample math question:

If x + y ≥ a, x - y ≤ -1, and the minimum value of z = x + ay = 7, what is a? 😰

A. -5
B. -5 or 3
C. 3
D. 5 or -3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBDwXipHykQ

Interesting - I didn't know that before.
So I searched for how many Chinese language symbols there are and was wondering, if new symbols are added from time to time (even in recent years) and I couldn't find any clear answer.
(I came to this question when asking for which western words do not exist any Chinese equivalents. In such cases either formulating with existing words or phonetic spellings are used.)
I thought - there must exist by now some extensive computer library for all Chinese language symbols and some means to track changes and additions over time or does one have to use a Chinese web search?
Who knows and can fill me in on this?

From conflict to coexistence: China sees changing human-wildlife relations

* Monday marks the International Day for Biological Diversity.

* Humans are exploring ways to avoid conflict and coexist with wild animals in harmony.

* While some residents are trying to live in harmony with wild animals, some others have changed their way of making a living.

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Residents in the rural area are used to having unexpected visitors - wild animals like hedgehogs and weasels. But what if the intruder is an elephant?

Pu Cuifen, from a village in Eshan County, southwest China's Yunnan Province, had that experience two years ago when a herd of wild Asian elephants left their forest habitat in Xishuangbanna, trekked hundreds of kilometers northward to the provincial capital Kunming and then headed back home to the nature reserve.

"I've only seen elephants in a zoo before, not expecting a wild elephant would appear at my doorstep," said Pu, a villager group leader, adding that she immediately mobilized villagers to evacuate overnight for safety.

The elephants harmed no one but had corn and beans in the farmland, causing losses of up to 50,000 yuan (about 7,127 U.S. dollars). With government-supported insurance, the villagers got compensated soon.

"Learning the elephants arrived home, we felt happy for them," said Pu.

This epic journey of wild Asian elephants indicates an increasing population of the species in China and provides a successful experience to solve the "human-wildlife conflict," said Chen Fei, director of the Asian elephant research center under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

Monday marks the International Day for Biological Diversity.

With the continuous ecological conservation efforts in China, endangered wild animal species, such as Asian elephants, snow leopards and Siberian tigers, have seen a rise in populations and expanded their habitats, with humans exploring ways to avoid conflict and coexist with them in harmony.

COEXISTENCE WITH LOVE

Asian elephants, a pivotal species in the rainforest ecosystem, are under first-class national protection in China. The elephants are mostly found across Yunnan.

Although its population is declining worldwide, the population of the endangered species in China has grown from 150 in the 1980s to 360 at present, thanks to protection efforts over the past decades.

Statistics show up to two-thirds of wild Asian elephants have wandered out of the nature reserve, leading to more contact with humans.

In the past, villagers would chase away the elephants to protect their crops and avoid financial losses, which may irritate the animals and lead to human injuries or deaths. Afraid of the giant animals, some villagers did not dare to leave their homes or farm in the field.

Wan Yong, head of the provincial forestry and grassland bureau, said Yunnan raised the compensation standard for the crops more prone to be consumed by elephants. Such compensation will help protect the interests of farmers and, at the same time, avoid the wild animals seeking food on farms from being attacked, said Wan.

The province has also created "canteens" for the wild elephants, growing over 600 hectares of their favorite food, such as elephant grass and bamboo.

A national park for Asian elephants is also in the works.

Wang Chuan, 44, lives in a village in Jiangcheng County, where a dozen wild elephants wander nearby.

"Instead of attacking them or chasing them away, villagers now simply leave them alone," said Wang. "Our crops might get damaged, but we tolerate them with love."

CONSERVATION WITH HEART

While some residents are trying to live in harmony with wild animals, some others have changed their way of making a living, from damaging the environment to protecting it.

In Gyirong County, a core area of Qomolangma National Nature Reserve in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, former logger and hunter Migmar has become a wild animal rescuer in the reserve on the China-Nepal border with Mount Qomolangma, the world's highest peak at 8,848.86 meters at its core.

He and his seven colleagues take turns patrolling every day. Since the establishment of the wildlife rescue station in 2019, they have rescued 17 wild animals, including those under China's first-class national protection, like a snow leopard.

Migmar, a former logger and hunter who has become a wild animal rescuer, feeds a rescued bharal at the wildlife rescue station of Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, March 14, 2023. (Xinhua/Sun Fei)

Last year, he took care of an injured red muntjac attacked by a beast. He learned to bandage the deer and clean its wounds, and six months later, he released it into the wild.

"Animals don't talk, but I can feel their trust. We have the responsibility to protect them," said Migmar, 44.

In northeast China's Jilin Province, the forest farm where Zhao Yan worked to produce timber has become part of a national park for the protection of tigers and leopards.

In the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, which spans an area of over 1.4 million hectares in Jilin and Heilongjiang, Zhao patrols more than 200 days a year, installing and checking infrared cameras and surveying the living conditions of wild animals.

"I'm not an expert, but a long time of fieldwork has given me abundant data on wildlife," said Zhao, now deputy director of the monitoring center for scientific research of the national park administration's Hunchun branch.

This undated photo taken with an infrared monitoring camera shows a wild Siberian tiger in Tianqiaoling forest area, northeast China's Jilin Province. (Xinhua)

The latest data show that the population of wild Siberian tigers in the park has exceeded 50, while the figure was 27 around 2017. Meanwhile, the number of Amur leopards in the park has increased from 42 in 2017 to more than 60.

Zhao said the comeback of the giant cats has shown that the ecological chain is restoring, and their protection efforts have paid off.

"I hope wild animals can live at ease, with humans and wildlife coexisting in harmony," he said.

This is fascinating. A peer-reviewed study discovered that men in China's Tang dynasty (618–907 CE) - the dynasty that introduced meritocracy in China with the imperial examination system (the famous Keju) - had as much social mobility as in 1960s America.

The Tang dynasty introduced the Keju system in 650CE. The study bases its finding on the analysis of excavated tomb epitaphs of male elites from that time. These epitaphs are highly detailed, and provide a trove of information on the officials' ancestral origins, family backgrounds, and careers. The study finds that early in the Tang Dynasty - before the Keju system - aristocratic ancestry was a distinct advantage, but over time, passing the Keju became an increasingly important predictor of one’s career achievement and eventually overtook aristocracy. The study also found that coming from a prominent clan or having a powerful father had no significant impact on whether someone passed the exam, which means it was true meritocracy.

Subsequent dynasties kept the Keju system in place and it is arguably still broadly the system in place in China today, except that the big exam is now called Gaokao.

All this goes to show just how far ahead - literally more than a millennia ahead - China was on the rest of the world in matters of social justice. France, the country that took the lead in ending aristocratic privileges in the West, only did so after 1789. And, interestingly enough, was much inspired by China in that process: if you study enlightenment thinkers like Voltaire, you can see they had an almost religious fascination for China. For instance Voltaire kept only one portrait in his study, facing him at all times, that of Confucius.

This is the link to the article:

Since I've traveled to almost all provinces in China (I'm missing just 3!) I often get asked what's the most spectacular place that I know in the country, and I think it's probably Fanjingshan in Guizhou province.

It's two temples, linked by a bridge, first built in the 7th century AD, on top of an extremely steep peak at 2,572 meters altitude. Going there is quite the journey as you need to climb a huge staircase of exactly 8,888 steps to reach the top 😅 You really wonder how they managed to build these temples back in the days! Thankfully nowadays you can also take a cable car that brings you closer, in which case the journey is shortened to about 2,300 steps, which took us about 2 hours with me carrying one of my daughters on my back and holding the other one's hand (picture below).

Unfortunately when we went it was quite foggy so I couldn't take good pictures but I included sunny-weather pictures so you can see just how jaw-dropping this place is.

The surroundings of Fanjingshan, and Guizhou province generally, are immensely charming too. Guizhou is one of the most rural provinces in China and home to plenty of ethnic minorities who've remained very traditional, with unique architecture styles for their villages.

For instance right around Fanjingshan we visited two villages (see both videos): one village called Yunshe of the Tujia ethnic minority, and one called Zhaisha which is a village of the Dong minority, famous for their very special towers in the middle of their villages.

One other place in Guizhou where I haven't been but where I would very much like to go next time I visit the province is a place that I'm pretty much certain no-one outside China has ever heard of called Pingba (平坝樱花): the world's largest gathering of cherry blossoming trees: an incredible 700,000 trees! All of this in islands and peninsulas on a lake. This place looks like the closest thing there is on earth to the garden of Eden!

It's a shame Guizhou is rarely visited by foreign tourists. In general in my experience it's the number 1 mistake people make when they visit China: they tend to spend all their time visiting cities (Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, etc.) when the countryside is in my humble opinion in some ways more impressive, with so many absolutely breathtaking sites.

A fun anecdote I recently read in the French press (https://20minutes.fr/publicommunique/4086939-20240417-guizhou-destination-touristique-classe-mondiale-chine) which illustrates this is that there's this French guy called Jean Bottazzi who's the Vice President of the French Speleology Federation (FFS). One day he decided to visit China and Guizhou specifically (since the place is filled with mountains and huge cave networks, including the Shuanghe cave network, the longest one in China) and... he literally stayed there, he now lives in China!

Did you ever wonder why so many Chinese workers were involved in building the transcontinental railways in America ?

A lot of the money that was used to build those railways was money from the then 'richest man in the world', a Chinese appointed trader for dealing with external trade with the world. Britain is usually blamed for the Opium War and the downfall of China but the people running the United States of America were up to their waists in it too.

Here's a very good 1 hour review of what has gone on between the West and China in the not too distant past. Keep in mind that until the opium war China was a very well developed 3 thousand year old civilisation. I don't necessarily mean to imply that it was a 'Godly' place though. Even today, there is a lot of Deity worship going on in provincial China beyond the CCP central hub of atheistic modernity. Rudolf Steiner even claimed that 'Satan' first showed up in China thousands of years ago.

The sticking point about China news, is the Great Firewall. Inside that, anything showing or talking about problems is quickly scrubbed, and VPN use is forbidden. So everyone who posts China news to non-Chinese platforms, has a green light from those same censors.

Propaganda exists, because it works, at least enough that it provides some gain or advantage. It might be as simple as “The enemy of my enemy, is my friend”.

China starts construction of second phase of giant radio telescope

https://ikona.telesurenglish.net/content/uploads/2024/09/FAST2-768x433.jpeg.webp
China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, 2024. X/ @ShanghaiEye

On Wednesday, China stated the construction of the core array of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST).

As a proposed extension of FAST, the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope, the Core Array integrates 24 secondary 40-meter antennas implanted within 5 kilometers of the FAST site, said Jiang Peng, deputy director of the National Astronomical Observatories under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The Chinese-designed array will combine the unprecedented sensitivity of FAST with a high angular resolution, thereby exceeding the capabilities at similar frequencies of next-generation arrays in the world. The FAST Core Array is estimated to be completed and put into operation in 2027.

The Core Array will be equipped with advanced devices to improve the survey efficiency of FAST, whose broad frequency coverage and large field of view (FOV) will be essential to study transient cosmic phenomena such as fast radio bursts and gravitational wave events; conduct surveys and resolve structures in neutral hydrogen galaxies; monitor or detect pulsars; and investigate exoplanetary systems.

Once operational, the FAST Core Array could provide more possibilities for global radio astronomy research, owing to a wide range of potential scientific applications from cosmology to exoplanet science.

Wednesday also marks the eighth anniversary of the launch of FAST. In less than a decade, FAST has already significantly expanded its astronomical observation capability, and the FAST Core Array is set to enhance its observational capabilities further.

The deepest and largest natural well on earth is called Xiaozai Tiankang. It is located in Penji, in the heart of China. This amazing well is completely natural and reaches a depth of 662m, a length of 626m and a width of 537m. But what stands out the most is the explosion of life it inhabits.

Xiaozhai Tiankang is what geologists are confused about due to the influence of water. In this case, it was created on top of a cave with an underground river of 8.5km in size and flowing into a spectacular waterfall. Its enormous size makes it the deepest sinkhole in the world.

It houses close to 1,300 species of plants and wild animals. Among the most fascinating "tenants" that roam their underground forest, the misty panther stands out locals have known him since ancient times.

Me being into natural stuff, it was wonderful to see how they focus so much on medicinal plants and holistic healthcare.

In fact, food/diet is the first thing these doctors discuss with the patients. Next is lifestyle.

I have been in Tibet for the last three days. It’s been an amazing experience - from visiting small villages and mountains to big city like Lhasa.

First, the Tibetan culture is enchanting and thriving - language, dress, architecture, art, food, dance, history, Buddhism and so on.

Of course, the Chinese infrastructure is impressive as usual. Public utilities like roads, highways, buildings, parks etc. are clean, well organized, and look pretty much like a developed nation.

No trash, graffiti, homeless people or drug addicts anywhere (not surprising in China).

Went to a Tibetan opera - Princess Wencheng - which should in the Guinness book of world records! Imagine 250 performers in three football stadiums in three dimensions on the base of a hill. Mind-boggling!

Tibetan traditional clothes - and religious attire - are also very common.

Couldn’t take photos inside the Potala Palace and other temples, but Tibetan Buddhism is everywhere.

Lots of influence from India, of course.

But Tibetan Buddhism is unique and has some fascinating aspects of “Tantric” spiritualism! 😝

Got to visit a Tibetan medical university in Lhasa, China.

Me being into natural stuff, it was wonderful to see how they focus so much on medicinal plants and holistic healthcare.

In fact, food/diet is the first thing these doctors discuss with the patients. Next is lifestyle.

The ancient Tibetan wisdom has been passed down for centuries and now written down in massive books.

1938469264345993424A friend of mine is a herbalist in the UK, and wanted to learn Chinese herbal medicine. She actually went to China to do that. (Wow!)

Part of the training she went through was to sit in a greenhouse with all the many different herbs, and then ask them what each one was for.

She'd do that telepathically, until she got some kind of an 'answer'. Then the Chinese herbal coach/trainer/master would tell her if she was correct or not.

In the end, she got pretty good at it, which was needed to pass the course and get the qualification.

Of course, this makes perfect sense. Thousands of years ago, e.g. in the Amazon rainforest when surrounded by about 50,000 different plant species, there's no way a small tribal family could figure out by trial and error what was a cure for a malady and what was a toxic spear-tip poison. They had to be told by the plants themselves.

🇨🇳 China is encircling three deserts!

They're using soil-fixing plants, solar panels to provide them shade, all while creating farmland out of previously yellow sand.

Afforestation, Energy, and Food all in one, as well as protection from dust and sandstorms.

🇨🇳 Chinese workers and farmers have fully encircled the Taklamakan desert with their Great Green Wall.

This has helped put an end to chronic dust storms that threatened the livelihood of millions of people in Northwest China.

The focus has now shifted to thickening the Wall.

One really interesting thing is that this has been a mass project which has quite literally involved millions of people.

Many went there to give a symbolic contribution but others, like this farmer, are on the frontline of the efforts and post about it on Chinese social media

There is no social credit score in China.

I’m in Shanghai and nobody knows what it is.

There is a credit score, but most countries have that. For example, commit a crime and you might struggle getting a home loan. Or lose points if you have too many road violations.

As part of my “China is a totalitarian hellhole” trip, I’ve just landed in Xinjiang, the most rural and politically sensitive province. Today I learnt if I say anything positive, I’m a CCP shill.

What a hellhole and here’s a black & white photo for extra hellhole-ness.

It's quite well known there is a social credit system in China and has been for years, which means Jerm Warfare is either a shill (there are plenty of them, Pepe included) or very unobservant and undiscerning (plenty of those too).
Anyone who is putting out a lot of disinfo about how well the Uyghurs are faring in China is either a dupe or a shill.
The CCP makes sure such tourists as Pepe and Jerm see only what they want them to see, and certainly nothing about how poorly treated the Uyghurs are in fact, and how they are being used as primary sources of human organ replacement.
And if you think the facts about the SCS are not well documented, think again...

Also, the fact that this forum is currently (and frequently) being messed with by China also tells us something. See:
QUOTE=ThePythonicCow;1686230]Good thing I had a good nights rest. Unfortunately, the attackers did too, and woke up before I did.
Here's the current list of countries from which this attack is coming:

1 Albania
6 Argentina
1 Bolivia
32 Brazil
1 Burkina Faso
1 Chile
1 Colombia
2 Dominican Republic
3 Ecuador
1 El Salvador
2 Ethiopia
1 Germany
1 Honduras
1 Hong Kong
11 India
5 Iraq
1 Japan
2 Jordan
1 Kazakhstan
2 Kenya
2 Libya
1 Myanmar
1 Nicaragua
1 Oman
1 Pakistan
2 Peru
2 Poland
9 Saudi Arabia
2 South Africa
1 Spain
1 The Netherlands
1 Turkey
4 Türkiye
1 United Kingdom
5 United States
1 Uruguay
1 Venezuela

The number in the first column is a rough measure of how strong the attack is from servers in that country.
China is not on the list, because for the last week, almost the entire attack was directly from servers in China. But now that I've mapped out those servers on my blocklist, they've gone to "Plan B", using all their "rent-a-servers" around the rest of the planet.
The forum server will probably be a wee bit sluggish on and off, as this battle goes back and forth, behind the scenes.
15 min after this pic was taken, we got visited by Chinese police.

Apparently there's a drone ban for next few weeks bc it's 70th anniversary of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and Xi Jinping is visiting. We flew drone bc we saw another Chinese tourist fly their drone. But police locked on us.

Our drone operator is a blonde Russian guy which raised more questions. When the police came, they saw him work on his big camera (he is our photographer).

Eventually, we got off with a warning not to fly the drone again in the drone ban period. They didn't ask to see our footage and let us go

As my trip to China draw to a close (and let’s face it I’m kind of confined to my hotel room by my gimpy foot) maybe it’s time to do some reflection.

A lot of Chinese ppl are eager to ask…what surprised you? What was better than you thought? What was worse?

I’ve been sharing lot of that along the way. But I don’t think I’ve shared the most important part of the journey, which is internal.

When you carry fear and negativity for years, it is all but impossible to logically dismiss those feelings.

I think I had pretty rationally concluded that I was misled about the true nature of China long before I physically got there. But there was still this internal tension…a fear that it’s all a charade! And that somehow if I touched the wrong tripwire while I’m there I’ll end up gulagized in some windowless room for wrongthink or something.

It’s the sort of thing that becomes transparently ridiculous as soon as I got here physically. Soon I was not just not in fear, I felt suuuuper relaxed and dare I say a little entitled. Yeah I played the I Taiwanese compatriot helllllp meeeeee with xyz card more than once.

I feel like we’ve been asking the wrong question in Taiwan all along. How are we going to resist China? How do we make sure the Chinese know Taiwan is not their property?

No…it’s the opposite. China…soon to be undeniably the most prosperous, advanced, enviable nation on earth…is OUR property! We have been barricading ourselves in the garden shed when we are a part of the same family that owns the whole damned house!

At Hongqiao now just waiting to board. 2hrs is pathologically early when there are e-gates and such short security lines.

One interesting thing I forgot to mention…I looked and looked for birch sap when I was in Sweden because I heard it’s so good but failed. RANDOMLY I found it in a Shanghai 7/11 last night! Damn I love globalization!

The taste is very subtle. It’s like more dilute coconut water. But refreshing. I feel like it’s great for when you’re very thirsty but don’t want to drink just water.

Finally found a Labubu! It’s outside a Guizhou resto chain. It was delicious but spicy and wayyyy too huge in portions!

I got 折耳根 for the first time. Challenging, but not as bad as fish mint in Vietnamese food! I think it’s the same plant but the root vs leaves!

The Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in China is a fascinating enigma, and the video by Mike Okay is my favourite on the enclave.

Groomed by decades of Hollywood movies and media stereotyping, many in the world are not capable of contemplating, comprehending or tolerating the true complexity of humanity. So, before you assign stereotyping to this enigma, casting China as evil, soak in the bizarre oddity of this part of China.

I don't think anyone here has "cast China as evil", though the CCP certainly does a lot of very evil deeds and there is really no credible contesting of that.

From Angelica,

Angelica 🌐⚛️🇹🇼🇨🇳🇺🇸

At Hongqiao now just waiting to board. 2hrs is pathologically early when there are e-gates and such short security lines.

One interesting thing I forgot to mention…I looked and looked for birch sap when I was in Sweden because I heard it’s so good but failed. RANDOMLY I found it in a Shanghai 7/11 last night! Damn I love globalization!

The taste is very subtle. It’s like more dilute coconut water. But refreshing. I feel like it’s great for when you’re very thirsty but don’t want to drink just water.

About Birch water

Nutrient-Rich Birch Sap, also known as birch water, is a clear liquid that’s extracted from birch trees. It has been consumed for centuries in Northern Europe and China for its health benefits.

Also in Balkan stores,

Birch sap water never leaves my side, especially on days I consult.

Magnesium and antioxidants rich!
Easy to find for cheap in balkan specialty stores. This big bottle is 3$ vs $20 at the health store.

So we actually did find an aunty picking cotton in Alar, Xinjiang.

She is not Uyghur. Her family came from Gansu province 20 yrs ago. She is picking the corner where cotton picking machine can't reach.

She said she prefers her hometown but there's no money in Gansu so she came to Xinjiang to pick cotton to put her kids thru college.

A fact rarely mentioned in Western Media is that Xinjiang cotton farmers usually hire migrant farmhands from Gansu because Gansu is poorer and Gansu people willing to work for less.

We stopped by a cotton field in Alar, Xinjiang because I wanted to pee.

I had a conversation with local Uyghur farmers who are surprised to see foreigners
@RealPepeEscobar
and
@RealJermWarfare
stopping by. They said they family farm is abt 100 mu亩 (6.67 hectares~16.5 acres).

1 mu yield abt 600kg cotton so they get 60k kg cotton at current market price of 7.5 rmb/kg. They get abt 450k rmb in revenue for this year's harvest. Their cost is abt 90k with a profit of 360k rmb.

They use cotton picking machines to harvest their cotton field

hey invited us to have lunch with them. We had to decline because we have a long drive thru the Taklamakan Desert.

They said when we come back, they would like to host us for a meal in their home. Such is the friendliness and hospitality of Uyghur people!

We drove thru Taklamakan Desert, the world's 2nd largest moving sand desert after Sahara, in 1 day!

China built the highway in 17 months frm Jun 2006 to Nov 2007. You can see "Chinese Magic Cubes" of straw grid fixing sand so it doesn't cover the road.

We drove across the dried river bed of Keriya river to reach Daryabey, prbly the most isolated Uyghur village in the heart of Taklamakan desert.

We found a huge HQ of a jade company next to our hotel in Yutian, Xinjiang. Because of Pepe's charm, we got a free tour by the company executive.

The company operates several largest jade mine in Hotan region. We tour their processing center and a jade museum!

My hotel room in Kashgar is much smaller but it's right next to the top tourist destination Kashgar old town, so I'm not complaining!

DD Geopolitics,

🇨🇳🌉 China opened the tallest bridge in the world, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou. It was built in less than 4 years.

It stands 625 meters (that's 114 giraffes, for the metrically challenged readers) above the Beipan River from deck to riverbed.

The 2890 meters long bridge (96 blue whale lengths), which has cut the time to cross the gorge from 2 hours to 2 minutes, also features a restaurant, a glass elevator, bungee jumping platform and a waterfall.

https://x.com/DD_Geopolitics/status/1974968508498010597

1974968508498010597

The day has finally come! The world's tallest bridge opens to traffic in China's Guizhou today!

The bridge took only 3 years from construction start to opening. It's another testament to China's extraordinary speed!

625m above the river and over "the Earth’s crack," the bridge shortens travel time between the mountainsides from 2 hours to 2 minutes.

Why Guizhou? As China's only province without plains, the country uses over 32,000 bridges to connect the mountain-isolated areas into a high-speed network.

Grateful to HistoricVids for sharing that stunning view of the Himalayas-it brought back vivid memories of my journey to Lhasa and Qomolangma Base Camp seven years ago.

Because of my fear of altitude sickness, I haven't yet dared to return, but that post does inspire me to share a few recent stories I've heard from friends living in Xizang, or Tibet.

For many, the first impression of Tibet might be cold, barren, or wind‑swept, a place where little grows except grass. Especially around areas like Qomolangma Base Camp, it can feel completely lifeless.

But in truth, Tibet is not more than snow‑covered peaks and biting winds. It also holds a gentleness and abundance that many would never expect.

Take Nyingchi, for example-the ancient peach groves at the foot of snow‑capped mountains burst into blossoms each spring, filling the air with birdsong and fragrance, their beauty easily rivaling the verdant valleys of Jiangnan in southern China.

And here's something else that may surprise you: fruit is no longer a rarity in Tibet.

Some regions naturally support fruit cultivation; others have achieved it over decades with support from agricultural experts across China. In 2018, when I visited Shigatse near the foot of Qomolangma, I saw watermelons on sale, grown locally.

Even in more remote areas, modern logistics now make it possible for residents to enjoy fresh fruit year‑round.

The following images are snapshots from a "Tibetan Fruit Map" I recently came across:
Top left: Ancient grapevines from Chamdo. Two years ago, agricultural researchers documented over 20 vines with trunk diameters exceeding 100 cm-the largest measuring 160 cm around and over 210 cm at the base-thriving at altitudes between 2,500 and 3,300 meters.
The oldest vine is estimated to be about 420 years old, just a bit younger than the world's oldest vine in Slovenia. And many are still fruiting today.

Top right: Sweet and fragrant honey peaches cultivated in Nyingchi, thanks to scientists adapting peach varieties to the plateau climate.

Bottom left: Pineapples from Medog County-a humid region that also produces kiwifruit, bananas, pomelos, and even coffee beans.
Wait, this doesn't feel like the Qinghai‑Tibet Plateau. It simply feels like Hawaii!

Bottom right: Highland apples grown by Tibetan farmers. With long daylight hours and sharp day‑night temperature differences, these apples are exceptionally sweet and flavorful. They not only meet local demand but are now being exported to South Asia.

A Tibetan friend once told me that before the founding of the PRC, fruit was a luxury enjoyed only by the aristocracy.

Even as recently as forty years ago, fruit in Tibet was far more scarce and costly than even in Japan. In some pastoral areas, people might eat a single apple once every two years, and green leafy vegetables almost never appeared on the table.

Today, however, things are completely different. More and more local residents are incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into their daily diet, improving nutritional balance and quality of life.

These changes may have unfolded quietly-but on the world's highest plateau, they mark a transformation as profound as it is inspiring🌏🏔️🍎🍇

Keeping with the food theme, here is a rave review of an entirely different kind of Chinese Food.

It’s a light and simple (no reason to heat, except if to melt snow) meal for PLA grunts, for the the starting (“3”) days of an operation or other warring activity.

Steve loved everything except the pork jerky, says it rates at the top of MREs he’s tried (“Meals Ready to Eat”, pretty much defined as a military thing, his channel subject).

I can and do take sides about military conflicts, but I hope for the best for the grunts on either side. Good food is from Heaven, it makes us feel good.

This is one of the more advanced rations from China. Used for the first 3 days of combat before self-heating meals and then field kitchen food is established, this is almost like a Chinese CCAR or FSR, but much more compact. It features food that is enriched with nutritional supplementation that makes this ration effective in the environment that it's used in, which is high altitude cold climates where there's less oxygen and higher strain on the body during heavy exertion.
