🇨🇳🤝🇷🇺 Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China Zhao Leji arrived on an official visit to Russia ahead of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum

He was met at the gangway by the first deputy chairman of the State Duma, Ivan Melnikov.

Zhao Leji’s visit to Russia takes place at the invitation of the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin. In the evening, July 9, an informal meeting will take place between the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC and the Speaker of the State Duma, during which Volodin intends to show the guest the sights of Moscow.

On July 10, a bilateral meeting between Zhao Leji and Vyacheslav Volodin will take place, as well as the ninth meeting of the Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the National People's Congress of the People’s Republic of China.

On July 11-12, Zhao Leji will take part in the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg.

🧱🫡BRICS FORUM IN ST. PETERSBURG✊🇷🇺

The 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum will be held at Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg on July 11–12, 2024, as part of Russia’s BRICS Chairship. BRICS parliamentarians will start with a plenary meeting titled ‘The Parliamentary Dimension of BRICS: Prospects for Strengthening Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation’, followed by a protocol signing ceremony to the Memorandum of Understanding on the BRICS Parliamentary Forum.

The event will continue with an expanded-format plenary meeting involving parliamentary delegations from BRICS countries, invited states, and inter-parliamentary organizations, focusing on enhancing the efficiency and democratization of international relations. The second day will feature discussions on the role of parliaments in countering fragmentation in the multilateral trading system and addressing global crisis threats.

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf is in Russia to attend the 10th parliamentary forum of BRICS member states.

The Iranian speaker, heading a parliamentary delegation, arrived in the city of St. Petersburg on Wednesday night.

He was welcomed by top Russian parliamentary officials and Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali.

The 10th parliamentary forum of BRICS is set to be held in St. Petersburg on July 11-12.

BRICS is a bloc of the world’s emerging economies. It was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China under the name of the "BRIC" group. South Africa joined in 2010, making it "BRICS".

The bloc seeks alternatives to existing Western-dominated world policies including those on economy, which it sees as unilateral.

Iran became an official member of BRICS in January this year after the bloc invited the Islamic Republic and five more countries to join, during its 15th annual summit in South Africa in August 2023.

Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE were other countries that officially joined the group in January 2024.

About 400 participants are expected to take part in the forum, and the main theme is "The Role of Parliaments in Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security.”

The delegations of both chambers of the Russian Parliament will be headed by Chairperson of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko and Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will also join the Forum's efforts, as Matvienko reported.

Relations between Russia and Iran will develop just as gradually as they did under the administration of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, affirmed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

"The relations between our countries develop quite successfully," Putin told Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on the sidelines of the BRICS Parliamentary forum of major emerging economies held in St. Petersburg, Russia.

"Just recently, your country held presidential elections. I would like to express my hope and I have no doubts that the relations between Iran and the Russian Federation will develop just as gradually as they did during the service of Mr. Raisi, whose demise we all regret and mourn," the Russian leader added.

Iran became an official member of BRICS in January 2024 after the organization extended an invitation to the Islamic Republic to join its ranks during its 15th annual summit in South Africa in August 2023.

Expressing his satisfaction with Iran’s membership in BRICS, Putin noted that Russia had supported Iran’s accession to the organization.

Putin confirmed that Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairperson of Russia’s State Duma, will lead a delegation to Iran for the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian on July 30.

Earlier on Thursday, Ghalibaf and Volodin also had a meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS forum.

De-dollarization helps alleviate US pressure on emerging economies

Addressing the organization's 10th parliamentary forum, the Iranian Parliament Speaker said, "Iran and the republic’s parliament understand that supporting and strengthening relations with BRICS member countries, including this grouping’s development, is of paramount importance to them."

He also expressed his country's readiness to collaborate with BRICS member countries to achieve shared objectives, emphasizing that events like the BRICS Parliamentary Forum are instrumental in advancing such cooperation.

According to Ghalibaf, de-dollarization and the use of alternative currencies will help alleviate US pressure on emerging economies.

He emphasized that one of the key actions by BRICS is the adoption of national currencies to move away from reliance on the US dollar. This measure, he added, reduces the financial pressure exerted by the US on emerging economies, often through sanctions imposed for political purposes.

The Iranian speaker also highlighted the organization's expansion as more nations are expressing interest in joining, which underscores BRICS’ significance in international relations.

Ghalibaf affirmed that Iran supports multilateralism, and therefore encourages BRICS countries to strengthen their cooperation to achieve ambitious goals, including global governance based on multilateralism.

He also stressed that the parliaments of BRICS member states can play a crucial role in facilitating trade and countering unilateralism.

"The BRICS Parliamentary Forum is a very important instrument to develop international relations, influence this world, and establish a new world order that would be more open, transparent and would result in more effective cooperation between our countries," Ghalibaf concluded.

On Thursday, Ghalibaf signed the memorandum of understanding on the BRICS Parliamentary Forum’s Protocol at the conclusion of the first day of the meeting.
