Safely Storing Bottled Water

hey all/ Mods feel free to move orjoin to any previous post.

i have had large 5 gallon bottles of drinking water , the plastic water cooler type, in my home for years.

Some opened and then refilled with filtered water.

Can anyone suggest how to keep bottled water clean and safe? Iodine? Bleach?

old way to store water still in use in rural Thailand, clay jars! No need to add anything on it, here they collect water from the rain in large clay jars sitting under the roof, the clay jars has a lid to prevent bugs to fall in, so when the rain is coming you open up the jars. Some filter with charcoal or clay just to be sure before drink.

A cistern works too, if you want to store a lot of water, water to be good and potable it must flow, can't be still for too long.

MMS1 for water purification: Health Recovery Manual
To treat plain clear water that you feel should be purified to kill disease pathogens, such as tap water from your faucet,
1. Add 8 drops of MMS1 (activated MMS—use 50% citric acid or 4% HCl) per gallon of water (or 4 liters/4 quarts).
2. Count 30 seconds for the drops to activate then put the mixture into a gallon of water.
3. Mix thoroughly, cover and wait for at least one hour before use.

Keep in mind MMS1 does not kill the chlorine or the fluoride in your tap water but it will kill diseases.
For smaller quantities of water, use less drops. For 1 quart (or liter) use 2 drops of MMS1.

Turpid (cloudy) water requires more MMS1.
If you have a slight bit of turbidity,

​1. Use 12 drops of activated MMS1 per gallon. A higher amount of turbidity requires higher amounts of MMS.

Use 12 to 24 of MMS1 drops or even more drops for river water. This is something you will have to evaluate and do your best to get it right. In this case, it is always best to error on the side of too many drops than not enough.

​A slightly bad taste resulting from the MMS1 (if you have to go higher) will not hurt you.

Purifying 1 gallon (3.8 litres) of water
Using MMS and 50% citric acid solution
Mix 2 drop of MMS
2 drops of 50% citric acid solution
Add the activated MMS to a gallon of water
Wait 10 minutes for the activated MMS to purify the water
Water is ready and safe to drink
Using MMS and lemon or lime or 10% citric acid solution
Mix 2 drop of MMS
10 drops of lemon, lime, or 10% citric acid solution
Wait 3 minutes for the MMS to get activated
Add the activated MMS to a gallon of water
Wait 10 minutes for the activated MMS to purify the water
Water is ready and safe to drink
To speed up the purifying action, you can activate the MMS with extra drops of citric acid solution, lemon or lime. You can use up to five extra drops of lemon, lime juice, or 10% citric acid solution to the MMS, before adding it to the water.

* To activate MMS using 50% citric acid solution -Use equal number of drops of both MMS and 50% citric acid solution. In this case 2 drops of MMS + 2 drops of 50% citric acid solution

* To activate MMS using lemon, lime juice, or 10% citric acid solution -Use 5 drops of either lemon, lime juice, or 10% citric acid solution for every 1 MMS drop . In this case 2 drops of MMS + 10 drops of either lemon, lime juice, or 10% citric acid solution.

I know the MMS method is superb, even the mainstream water managers use this to purify potable water, but 'Silver' is another way of keeping water drinkable, it has an antiseptic action, colloidal silver might be a good option - not many of us have huge silver vessels to store water in, but Silver derivatives and so forth is worth looking into.

Doug, water should not sit more than 1-2 years. I drink my stored water every Spring and fill each bottle as they are used with fresh water. This is what I would suggest.

Avoid plastic.

Glass, steel, mylar are all better options for long term storage of anything.

If you need to go with what you have best is to refresh it on a regular basis. If you can't, then head to a camping store and get some water treatment options.
