Ok, we are legit witnessing the greatest geopolitical Streisand effect of my lifetime.

I'm seeing dozens of posts on X with massive engagement (10s of thousands of likes and millions of views) praising China and lambasting U.S. anti-China propaganda. I assume this is the same on other social media platforms. It's likely the greatest soft power win China has ever scored by a huge margin.

And the funniest thing is China literally did nothing for it: it's entirely organic or, more accurately, triggered by the US government.

Will it be sustained? Are we witnessing a turning point where Americans will durably refuse to get brainwashed and gaslighted about China? Let's see... But one thing is sure, especially when you couple this with the vibe shift of younger Americans around Israel, we're entering a new age where U.S. propaganda - once so good that most people didn't even realize its existence - is increasingly ineffective.

All of these posts/articles are propaganda. I've been checking TikTok users on online communities and most of them are in panic and desperate. They find Red unfriendly to use and "not as much fun". Some of them have already realized that topics like politics and human rights are not allowed there otherwise you get banned. The move is minimal and it will die off eventually unless something new emerges.

How often do tik tok users talk about politics and human rights? USA has a far worse record with human rights than China...

I think humans interacting is a good thing, especially when that leads to people finally waking up and noticing their surroundings.

What to Know About RedNote, the Chinese App That American TikTokkers Are Flooding

With the clock ticking on a potential TikTok ban in the U.S., scores of Americans are flocking to a surprising alternative: a popular Chinese social media platform called Xiaohongshu, or RedNote in English.

The Supreme Court appears unlikely to block a law that requires TikTok to either be divested from its China-based parent company, ByteDance or shut down in the U.S. on Jan. 19. The law stems from concerns about the Chinese government accessing Americans’ data.

That’s got many of the viral video app’s 170 million U.S.-based users preemptively looking for somewhere else to go. And RedNote seems to be the platform of choice.

The start of this week saw a dramatic uptick in Google searches and social media posts about RedNote, as well as its surge to the top spot of the “free apps” chart on Apple’s app store. The market intelligence firm Sensor Tower told NPR that its data indicates RedNote is also the top-ranked social app on the Google Play store on Wednesday — a big jump from #162, where it stood this time last year.

A person close to RedNote told Reuters that more than 700,000 new users joined in just two days. The New York Times reported that more than 100,000 people joined a live group chat hosted by a user named TikTok Refugee Club on Tuesday.

Many of these American newcomers are calling themselves TikTok refugees, a term that’s proliferating across the app in hashtags, comment sections and live chats. And the app’s Chinese users appear to be welcoming them with open arms, asking for cat photos and help with their English homework.

While RedNote — like all social media apps in China — is subject to government censorship, many users are cheering the opportunity for cross-cultural exchange, especially given the tense relationship between the U.S. and Chinese governments and the fact that major platforms like Google and Facebook are blocked in China.

“For so long we really haven’t been able to connect or talk with each other like this, but now we finally can, and it feels so special,” one Chinese user, who identified himself as Abe, said in a now-viral post. “This is such a real chance for us to get to know each other and maybe create something amazing together … You are not just welcome here, I really, really hope you will stay.”

The lifestyle app is China’s take on Instagram, favored by women

The Chinese equivalent of TikTok is the ByteDance-owned platform Douyin.

RedNote is a different app altogether. It’s considered China’s answer to Instagram, with a layout similar to Pinterest (displaying multiple posts at the same time) and a focus on travel, makeup, fashion and shopping.

Users can post short videos, engage in live chats, call each other and even purchase products within the app.

It launched in 2013, originally named “Hong Kong Shopping Guide,” and Reuters reports that it aimed at Chinese tourists looking for local recommendations.

Over the years, it grew steadily and took on the name Xiaohongshu, which translates to “Little Red Book.” That phrase traditionally refers to a collection of quotations from Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong.

RedNote boomed among younger consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic and is now valued at $17 billion. It currently boasts 300 million monthly active users, 79% of whom are women, according to TechCrunch.

The app has caught on quickly among American audiences since last week, according to Sensor Tower.

It says U.S. mobile downloads of the app increased more than 20 times over the seven-day period beginning Jan. 8, compared to the previous week, and are up more than 30 times compared to the same period last year.

More than a fifth of RedNote’s total app downloads so far this month have come from the U.S., the firm says, compared to just 2% during the same period in 2024.

American users navigate language barriers and censorship

RedNote’s new American users are confronting the potentially taboo topics of privacy and censorship head-on. Users — from both countries — are joking about finally meeting their “Chinese spies” and willingly handing over data (including the aforementioned “cat tax“).

The New York Times reports that in a group chat this week viewed more than 30,000 times, “participants discussed censorship and shared tips in the comments on how to avoid being banned from the platform for bringing up politically sensitive topics.”

“Welcome, but do not say anything about LGBTQ+. Thank you!” wrote a user in Beijing, in one example reported by Newsweek. The Advocate reported that some American users have had their content removed or accounts suspended, including one woman who was banned for wearing a low-cut top in one video and mentioning “trans plight” in another.

In 2022, the China Digital Times — a California-based nonprofit that covers censorship in China — published a leaked trove of documents showing how the content moderation team at RedNote bans or limits posts about sensitive topics.

Those include some 546 derogatory nicknames for Chinese leader Xi Jinping, as well as discussion of events such as labor strikes, geographic discrimination, student suicides and criticism of the Chinese Communist Party.

Plus, since most of the app’s content is in Mandarin, subtitles are suddenly rampant — as are posts from Americans who want to learn the language, including by exchanging translations of popular slang phrases with Chinese commenters.

Duolingo, the language learning app, tweeted on Wednesday that it has seen a whopping 216% increase in Mandarin learners in the U.S. compared to this time last year — adding that people “learning Mandarin out of spite” are “not alone.”

The irony that Americans are leaving TikTok for another Chinese-run app has not been lost on many users, some of whom see the move as an act of defiance against U.S. lawmakers’ efforts to ban it.

“Did the U.S. government forget our founding principles? We are a nation built on spite,” user @thesleepydm posted on TikTok, where they have over 200,000 followers. “We’re giving our information directly to the Chinese government now. The communists just have our information directly because of … what you did.”

People who do not already understand this about China, Russia and you name what other country, are way out of touch and far behind the proverbial Eight Ball.

People in the USA are very highly propagandized and lied to at every level on every subject of significance. Full stop.

People of all nations are propagandized.

But, far too many people in the USA, and other countries (some more than others), are kidding themselves by thinking they know what’s going on. We have no clue. We grabble in speculation and pontificate in echo chambers. Much talk, very little action.

The ignorance is staggering. By design.

Fortunately, there is a mass awakening. What is will change. That scares the crap out of the evil-doers.

Thank goodness.

Keep it up!

Edit:

I hasten to add that Rednote is likely a rebrand of Tik Tok. Upgraded. There is a lot of propaganda and mind/behavior manipulation taking place between strangers on these platforms.

Who the hell knows who one is interfacing with and what their agenda is?

Thread carefully.

Red. Hmmm. Isn’t a Communist referred to as a “Red”?

Extremely telling that some of the most popular content on Xiaohongshu/REDnote are video of people shopping in Chinese supermarkets.

This guy 👇 is buying a trolley-full of fresh food - meat, fish and vegetables - for RMB 160 or about $20 (link to the post: https://xiaohongshu.com/explore/678a39cf0000000016036c00?app_platform=android&ignoreEngage=true&app_version=8.59.1&share_from_user_hidden=true&xsec_source=app_share&type=video&xsec_token=CBKVsl7aHCxTfkTHPpKzP4m996fQixlbnqn96TP4wHUoA=&author_share=1&xhsshare=WeixinSession&shareRedId=OD06NUc8NUo2NzUyOTgwNjY7OThFS0hL&apptime=1737172091&share_id=a724bd2a89214622bdad7f5990c35690).

And actually that's comparatively expensive in China: if you want to buy fresh products, you shouldn't go to branded supermarkets (especially foreign brands like Aldi here) but to local producers' markets which are virtually everywhere in China, with prices maybe about half of those in the video (because you cut the middlemen).

This is the social media equivalent of this famous Boris Yeltsin video where he goes grocery shopping in the U.S. Except this time around it's Americans experiencing the reverse culture shock, realizing how unaffordable basic necessities have become in their own country compared to China.

Granted, Chinese incomes are lower than those in the U.S. but even on a RMB 6,000 - RMB 8,000 monthly income ($800 - $1,000, the lower end of the pay scale nowadays in China), RMB 160 for a trolley-full of fresh food is proportionally much more affordable than what you'd need to pay in the West.

Americans are going onto Little Red Book/ Red Note/Xiaohongshu and getting out of the matrix and realize everything they've been told about China is a lie

Then they come onto Twitter to see if the cars, buildings & doctor prices they saw is true. Could a Dr visit only cost $2. Could a MRI cost $50

Yes my fellow Americans, I've been living in China for most of last 30 years.

What Chinese on Red Note tell you is true, what NYT/WSJ and our government tells us about China is lies

Mr. Ravenlocke - for the Americans and others, who would like to see a bit of balanced information on the merits or demerits of TikTok and Rednote, I offer the following in rebutal.

And by the way, Rednote does not translate as that from the Communists Chinese term Xiaohongshu. It actually loosely translates to "Little Red Book". But what does Little Red Book signify in Communist China? Quotations from Chairman Mao, the founder of the Chinese Communist Party, are colloquially referred to in the English-speaking world as the Little Red Book

You have published a good amount of information. Great. But you appear to include the reports of several people who do not have the interests of the USA at heart and are thus hardly impartial reporters in respect to this topic. Probably you did this as a way to get the subject out there.

[1]
The first source you use is Ben Norton. He was once partners with Max Blumenthal, until Max charged him with the theft of $70,000 in joint income from their venture.

He is a strong supporter of Ortega and Murillo - dictators of Nicaragua. In fact, they liked his reporting, which stated that the citizens revolt against his rigged vote and unlawful election, was nothing less than a citizens attempt at a coup-de-etat.

Max Blumenthal and the Grayzone mirthmakers shuffle about to Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega’s theme song in managua prior to July 19 anniversary of the revolution. 325 people were killed, 2,000 injured, 800 jailed, 50,000 exiled in regime’s crackdown over 15 months. Party!

Dictator Ortega liked him so much that he gave him Citizenship in Nicaragua, and Norton is now living there - although he is currently on a mission to China.

According to Blumenthal, Ben Norton was making 6k a month just off the old GZ social accounts in Nicaragua (on top of whatever deals he had with the govt. to re-write their press releases)- and buying property. The minimum wage for the locals there is $213/month.

The Grayzone News, where he supposedly did his bait and switch robber, defends the authorities in not only Nicaragua, but in Cuba, Venezuela, Russia, Siria and China.

[2] Daniel Dumbrill is a Canadian YouTuber who lives in Chongqing, China. He is most notable for his videos about life in China. He is an associate of Norton, above - he does video reports with him..

Daniel Dumbrill is another classic example of a western “anti-imperialist” and “anti-racist” who is quick to condemn white supremacy and western imperialism [If the money is right.] yet outright denies any human rights violations committed onto Uyghur by China. Dumbrill is one of many foreign influencers on YouTube living in China that is being used by the Communist Party of China to “debunk” any criticism of China and post how life in Eastern Turkistan (Xinjiang) “really is.” According to a report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Dumbrill is one of 13 foreign influences in China making content pushing pro-Communist Party of China narratives.

In defense of the Chinese government, Dumbrill says “Based on what they were facing in Xinjiang, what else were they supposed to do?” He then compares this to how there were no re-education attempts for a Neo-Nazi who were arrested and sentenced to prison in the UK. Very bold to compare anti-colonialists who desire the right to self-governance, to Neo-Nazis caught with Nazi propaganda on their phones. Like Jackson Hinkle, Dumbrill creates a false dichotomy between Uyghurs and Palestinians.

Here's one of Daniel's own posts in Jan 17th of this year: "There's renewed efforts topush the "Uyghur Genocide" to deflect attention from Gaza. Folks who genuinely care about Palestinians &
Uyghurs are unwittingly helping Isreal."

[3] I would report your next source but since ShanghaiPanda is a made up name, and composed of two parts that are both linked to Communist China, I think I can skip him or her, or AI it if you will.

[4] Arnaud Bertrand is an entrepreneur and commentator on economics and geopolitics. He founded HouseTrip and Me & Qi. So even though he has recently sold HouseTrip, it doesn't take a very clever person to understand that he sells trips to Communist China as well as living there, and so he is hardly an unbiased source either. His income depends on sucking up to the Xi's. Plus his wife is Chinese.

I noticed that in one of his Twitter posts he mentions that you can get trolly loads full of fresh meat, fish and vegetables, for RMB 160, or about $20. So that kind of distorts the Carl Zha post that the RMB is equal to the Dollar. I would also note that translators working in China comment that the Hospitals are cheap, but you will find blood splattered on the wall without cleanup, for days, and that Xi demands that they treat you with the local herbs and Chinese style medications. I don't doubt that some of these remedies are good, but they don't help a broken heart, except to delay any expensive surgery.

[5] Carl Zha is a Sichuan-born China-commentator who had a long-term professional sojourn in southern California, before settling in Bali, Indonesia.
One commentator said "He is believed to be around 30 to 40 years old and celebrates his birthday on October 22 every year, a day that underscores his commitment to sharing knowledge and fostering a deeper understanding of intricate global matters." I had no idea what October 22nd meant to the Chinese Communists until I searched and found this: "Chinese Communist Party's term to end on October 22, Xi Jinping likely to retain top spot". So it's the date when their Dictator gets re-elected.
When someone comments that they and others "believe him to be between 30 and 40", it tells me that he is not a person but rather a group of desks in some Chines psy-op building.

[6] George Galloway (born 16 August 1954) is a British politician, broadcaster, and writer. He has been leader of the Workers Party of Britain since he founded it in 2019, and is a former leader of the Respect Party. The Respect Party was a left-wing to far-left socialist political party active in the United Kingdom between 2004 and 2016.

The founding of the Workers Party of Britain was welcomed by the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist–Leninist) (CPGB-ML). Joti Brar, a vice-chair of the CPGB-ML, was elected as the Workers Party of Britain's deputy leader at its founding congress.

Until 2003, he was a member of the Labour Party. From 1987 to 2010, from 2012 to 2015 and briefly in 2024 Galloway served as Member of Parliament (MP) for five different constituencies.

Galloway describes himself as both a socialist and socially conservative. He travelled to Iraq to meet government officials in the 1990s. He caused controversy for praising Saddam Hussein at a 1994 meeting, which he denied. Galloway founded the Mariam Appeal in 1998 to campaign against sanctions on Iraq. Galloway was accused of receiving illicit payments from Iraq's government, partly from money diverted from the United Nations' Oil-for-Food Program, defending himself at a 2005 United States Senate hearing. He supported Jeremy Corbyn in his leadership of the Labour Party.

To Americans that might not know - the Labour Party is Britains answer to Socialist-Democrats.

[7] CHRIS MARTENSON, PhD (Duke), MBA (Cornell), is a former Vice President at SAIC [Dept. of Defense contractor], worked for Pfizer, and created the viral video series, The Crash Course, which has been viewed by millions of people and translated into 4 languages. Pfizer should be enough, regardless of his change in lifestyle lately.

I could go on but I have other things to do.

I'm not trying to bust the bubbles of any anxious, Karen-like dreamers, who lament the possible loss of Tik-Tok - I know how they will have a difficult time living without it, but to show that these are hardly the ones we might wish to consider as unbiased advisors on the issue.

Unlike the Karen Blixen, who stars in the series “The Dreamer”, (which I haven’t seen nor care to),

I seem to recall at the start of the Ukraine war the Biden admin hired young Tiktokers to influence his political stance about the war, wait let’s see for example,

Now over 700,000 (last count ) Tiktokers have moved to an available free app similar to the Tiktok app, called Rednote (xiaohongshu), because of the upcoming ban on Tiktok they are:
1. Making headlines and reported not just by so-called “China sympathizers”, but news outlets like CNN, Forbes, etc.

2. Americans are interacting with Chinese people which was not allowed on Tiktok, since Tiktok is banned in China, and they are finding out that their government has lied to them about China, living standards in China, etc. there goes the anti China funding,

Multiple CRITICAL points coming from people living in China!

This YouTube channel by Serpentza, a South African who lived in China for many years, is one of my favorite sources about life in China. Non-propagandist, freedom loving, down to earth guy.
But I’m all for people moving from country to country, and mixing with other cultures. Interracial marriages are the only solution to wars. But I also think healthy patriotism is ok. To each their own.

“I could go on but I have other things to do.

That's pretty funny - answering my comment with remarks about Biden and his Commies.
I believe that my stance on Biden, Demos, Commies of all types and stripes, people that have a robin-hood complex, whiners, and those attempting to get something for nothing, is pretty crystal clear, both on here and internet wide.

Veggies are cheap in China. OK. Probably from Vietnam or Thailand but I will give you that. And you can eat cheaper - as long as you really, really like noodles with just a photo of meat to go along with them (too small to call meat being added). It's probably a healthier way to live as well. I can tell by the gillions of fat commies that they eat well too. What, no fat commies? There are in the upper ranks of the Party.

But you simply can not compare the huge steaks and ribs that I eat, along with a great many other products, such as good Italian food, with the average meal of a Commie Chinese. So, you are not a beer drinker I take it? Since you have been there 30 years, you must not be, or else you must drink expensive, imported beers, because the Chinese ones taste like they were recycled recently from the original if you get my drift.

Read what Xi has said, over an over, about his "people" needing to embrace herbal medicines and not keep wishing for modern medical equipment. Do the people in the USA have a complex over medicine, sure. Are they somewhat lazy, spoiled, and hypochondriacs? Yes.
Do they pay too much for meds and doctors? Sure. But allowing the Commies to take over will not solve those problems - as long as the majority of Americans agree to foot the bill for absolutely anything that the illegals need or desire.

How long would an undocumented, visa-less, "immigrant" or whatever name you wish to apply, or even an American who overstayed his or her Visa, last in Commie China? When Xi begins to take care of his share of the poverty and the poor of the world, then come back to me. Or when he does anything that does not eventually or quickly benefit him over others, let me know.

And if you care to comment about health, how about his smokestacks? About a third of the entire world's pollution is generated by CCR and they will not even discuss it, let alone show in on your Little Red Book platform. Look on Google - watch the smoke - enjoy.

TicToc like products with spy devices implanted in them, are only allowed by the American Government to spy on Americans and Canadians. Otherwise it is wrong. But seriously, if you think that a big bunch of us are going to sit back and watch the ChiComms indoctrinate, spy upon, and then gather intel for invasion, without doing something or saying something, then you must think Biden is still in office.

Bye Bye Biden, and good riddance to all the quisliings who shill for Communist China in the Congress, and who make billions off their Commie connections.

I'm glad to see someone else on the forum is a fan of Serpentza, Ulli.:highfive:
I post Serpentza's updates and his co-host's, laowhy86 of the "The China Show" regularly on the Turmoil in China thread, as well as "The China Show" which sadly seems to get very little attention of forum members.
But then not so long ago, there was a Chinese woman (who was obviously a CCP shill,) who started a thread on Avalon that wasn't challenged by anyone here except for myself.
The conflicts related to the war in the Middle East are apparently far too important to allow for much attention to be paid to the CCP's global domination goals...or so it seems Ravenlocke would have us believe, judging by the number of posts made here every day with that focus.

The reality of what life is like in China today is so dystopian that probably even many veteran conspiracy theorists would find the information on "the Turmoil in China" thread, (including information from many different sources besides "The China Show"), to simply be unbelievable.
Not to say that what the Globalists in the US are doing isn't also very nefarious, but China is currently the shining poster child for the Globalists' tyrannical agendas, and the CCP is excelling, even outdoing, the Globalists' blueprints for remaking the world to their own specifications.
(Though the CCP might actually finally prove to even be in defiance of the Globalists, their thinking being that the Globalist tactics aren't nearly brutal enough...and then, the Party members are very racist, so if you aren't Han Chinese, you don't really count for much.)
Here's the latest from laowhy86, who like Serpentza, also spent over a decade living, working and travelling in China, and still has many contacts there who secretly and at risk to themselves, keep him informed about what's really happening there.
...Which helps makes their reports credible, because the CCP's censorship and propaganda programs are so widespread that most Chinese people themselves have very little idea of what is going on in their own country, and even if they do, they dare not say anything much about it.

Just to pin point regarding the veggies issue only, Thailand actually import lots of fresh veggies from China and Vietnam, if you go places like Makro you will see, packages all written in Chinese and Vietnamese, Thailand exports quite a lot too, but not to China or Vietnam.
I live in Thailand for over 12 years now, my wife is chef so I know how much things cost here in terms of veggies, meat, anything food actually.
For example 2 days ago I bought Chinese Celery (1 plant - no idea how much it weight), I paid 79 THB (2.29 USD). Don't believe what I say go here and check for yourself, there is prices for Fruits, Vegetables, Meats, Fish/Seafood, Rice, Flour and other types of dry goods.

https://talaadthai.com/en/products?category=15
(it is the biggest hub in South East Asia if not in the entire Asia - it connects farmers to merchants and exporters)

All these prices can be fact checked, every country has some sort of food hub for food distribution. Want cheaper? buy directly from the farmer, strike a deal, so food can be cheap, but also one must pay attention on the poison level used to produce that food, nothing is organic as they say, want 100% organic? plant it yourself.

Just a quick check and I found out that Chinese Celery I bought on Makro for 79 THB, actually cost as little as 30 THB per kg, but that require me to go in the hub and buy in person. Oh no what a rip off lol

~~~
That is exactly why I avoid any sort of social media, like the plague, it is ALL mis/dis-information and brain washing with no ending BS. I feel sorry for those who depend on that to make a living, what I have to say to tiktokers is simple: grow a pair of balls and get a real job. (anyone feel free to hate me for my statement, but the world was a better place before all this **** came along.)
Well if you watch it all it paints a different picture.
Little Red Book, rebranded RedNote outside China, is generally only used by well off people who cannot truly speak their mind and really only use the app to brag about their conspicuous consumption, when the vast majority of Chinese in Greater China are lucky if they get equiv US$700 per YEAR.
If you are interested in the story around this app (please don't install it) watch the whole of Winston's (sertentza's) video linked by ExomatrixTV above.
This youtuber is a great example of a CCP shill who gets paid to spread CCP propaganda about how great things are in China, especially when compared to the US.
To get a much more honest perspective, watch some of the videos on the Turmoil in China thread, and particularly The China Show videos, whose hosts go out of their way to expose just these kinds of ploys, with irrefutable evidence that what they are saying is true and what the shills are saying are lies.
🇺🇸🟢🇨🇳TikTok is back for American's - a PR stunt by Trump to boost ratings
Here is some background how he used it manipulate his voters:
- In 2020, Trump tried to block TikTok and even signed an executive order. ByteDance sued, saying the president had no such authority, and the ban was overturned.
- Then a deal was proposed: a TikTok Global headquartered in the US, where Oracle and Walmart were to own stakes. But ByteDance ignored the terms and continued to operate.
- Under Biden, the topic resurfaced again. Republican senators said that TikTok “may be spying on Americans.” No evidence was presented, but the ban was initiated.
- The most interesting thing: the date of blocking was set just a day before the inauguration of the new president.
Now Trump, like a hero, is lifting the ban, winning the sympathy of the Zoomers and Millennials - cleaning up a problem he himself created and coming out a winner.
It's a multi-pronged approach.
The real Chinese version of TikTok is called Douyin. And it’s now open to Americans!
Just like Xiaohongshu, the app will be in Chinese and you will be directly interacting with people in China.
China opening up like this is really incredible! It shows that the Chinese government is not worried about color revolution or the CIA’s propaganda.
Another HUGE WIN For Trump!
lkhfx2rsaz8
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to postpone the ban on TikTok as he tries to find a way to keep the app active in the U.S. -- instructing the attorney general to delay the ban by 75 days.
Trump’s extension follows a brief period on the day before the inauguration when TikTok went dark for roughly 14 hours. Trump notably called for a ban of the app due to national security during his first term but now is widely being credited as the savior of TikTok in the United States.
Jimmy & Kurt Metzger discuss what a colossal fumble Democrats made over TikTok and why ostensible “national security concerns” over the social media platform are just so much BS.
