Make the people pay for the floods themselves by imposing a food levy.

http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/floodrelief/tony-abbott-will-fight-flood-rebuild-levy/story-fn7ik2te-1225995164738

I'm sorry - but i just cant seem to close my jaw from shock currently.

We work over 150 days a year, with 100% of that salary earned going straight to government as tax. They slap us with fines for everything they can - heck they even have a google earth team in City council that's sole purpose is to find people who dont have "up to date pool fences" - and they keep changing the regultions every year or so so the average joe has to waste $$ changing the fence to comply.

When given the option to take the funds to help the Aussies devistated by the floods from other projects (lets give the NBN as an example - because it became fairly obvious a long time ago the government is going to screw it up completely either way - so why not put it on hold a bit and take funds to help people in need?) or heck, from their own bonus salary?? Nononono - They'd get a much bigger kick if they make every australian pay, including the ones who sufferd direcly from the floods.

Then i think of jobs in goverment - like the one i have. The positition isnt necessary. Heck, there's another one in my team who rocks up 9-5 every day and just surfs the web all day. There are SO many positions in government like this, that are there purely becuse the manager is butt buddies with others.

Commonly known as being "besides oneself" with anger.

This is in a country where in some shops milk is cheaper than bottled water.

Let's rebuild all the houses that are in a known flood plain with everyone else's money - great plan.

If the money was to relocate the people to houses higher up and then preventing the building or re-building of houses from known high-risk areas, that would make more sense and I might just be ok with it.

My X, lives in Hawthorne. Not right up against the river, but a 5min walk down the road away from the river.

When he bought the house, he specificly asked for flood insurance. He could not get it, from ANYONE. The only "flood" insurance they'd provide is if it was "rainfall flood water" only.

So you have the insurance company's screwing people over with the fine print, and them flat out not offering real flood insurance in areas that need it ontop of that.

ugh.

(edit - no he diddnt get flooded - no power for a week tho, very lucky!)

(For fellow Australians) As you probably know, the Queensland Premier Anna Bligh set up a Disaster Relief Appea (http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate.html)l. So far Prime Minister Julia Gillard has not made any mention of subtracting any donations to the appeal from the flood levy, which smacks of double-dipping to me.

Insurance companies specifically do not cover riverine flood. It is made plain to anybody who takes out a policy that riverine floods are not covered. It is the responsibility of the individual who, knowing full-well they already live in a floodplain, to make sure they read over their policies and make sure they know what they bought.

It is not the insurance companies' fault. These companies are closely regulated and must by law provide complete disclosure before purchase, which they do. It is a harsh thing to say, but it needs to be said - it is fault of the foolish people who built those houses in the first place. They knew what they were doing. They were warned repeatedly. They even had a rude wake-up call during the floods of the 1970's and 1990's. What did they do? They kept right on building.

The real guilty persons are the greedy little councils who authorised building on that land. THEY are the ones who should pay for the clean-up. Anything else just reinforces this country's slippery slide into a mentality of complete irresponsibility.

But to make all Australians, (rich and poor) pay for this madness is an act of total lunacy. So many Australians earn barely enough to exist within society, and a levy of around $250 - $500 per year will send even more people into hardship. Where's the logic in that? There should be massive protests in the streets over that, but Australians are too sedated to try anything so assertive these days.

P.S. Everyone who has an insurance policy is already going to pay more for their premiums next year. We're all paying more for basic food items already. This new levy is nothing more than a sinister attempt to steal more wealth away from the people by stirring up an emotional wound. And I'll bet that the masses will swallow it hook, line and sinker.

Very well said and agree.

I have been kicked a few time IRL for saying such things, but no one can argue the case - they just get cross with me :)

What is to stop this going the way of : "why pay for insurance at all - the government will pay for it"

Or will I get a discount off my levy because I have insurance? (Kind of the way I get a discount from my medicare levy because I have hospital insurance)

Happy Ausie day!!!

On January 26, 1788, a fleet of ships landed at what is now Sydney, Australia. These ships were under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip and had brought a load of prisoners from England. The prisoners on the ships were not all criminals as we would think of them today. Many of them were people who had been arrested because the government didn't like what they had to say. And some were poor people who had been jailed because they owed money...

I would have no problem paying a flood levy *IF* I knnew that, the moment *I* was hit by flood (and I'm told that's not altogether unrealistic in Bunbury), I could claim on aforementioned funds from said levy to help me rebuild/ buy new appliances. ie: The flood levy money is for flood recovery only, *NOTHING* else.....

But who bets that they'll use the funds elsewhere in the future after the qld/vic/nsw mess is cleaned up?

I loved my time in aus and then I had to come back to reality and the grind of Canada. In the past years we have been taking lots and lots of ideas from the gov. of australia and I'm not sure why since from reading this thread the australian gov. and the canadian gov. think alike from the beginning. Maybe it's because being both commonwealth countries the influences of each tended to rub off. After seeing the water flowing in australia it reminds me of a few floods of late here in Canada. The same thing happened where peoples insurances were void due to water. Should have been where the insurances kicked in and helped but as my dad always said: "Build on high ground where you can see things coming!" Too many people here built in the valley to get out of the wind and then occasionally get wet and I mean real wet when 5 feet of water of more passes through their homes.
After rambling for a paragraph here I have to tell the people of australia whom I grew to love and respect a heart felt good luck and know that you aren't alone in this time of need.
May all the best be passed along to each of you in this time of trials.

I Agree with ALL the comments so far...

BUT...

You forgot to mention that the Fabian Socialist Labor Govt. (Part of the Globalist NWO Cabal) are Bankrupting our Country on PURPOSE..!

Our Democrocy Has been "Hijacked"!

Ours is not a Govt. 'By the People by the People' it is 'For the Party by the Party'! To me that leans more towards Communism!

"Know Your Enemy"!

Unelected Joolya Gillard...Something Look familiar to you?

Think about it...Labor started out with $20 billion in the bank, NOW we are over $150 billion in the Red, with an interest bill of approx. $100 million per week.

http://ts3.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=395539908958&id=e2e2ae0fbbd049de737e7f7c2351813d&url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.abc.net.au%2freslib%2f200801%2fr218293_853641.jpg

and Labor are borrowing more than $100 million a day, every day.

As for the Surplus, WHAT Bloody Surplus! There was NEVER going to be one in the 1st place! It is mathematically impossible! These Scumbags would sell their souls to hide their Lies!

Where's all the $Money Gone? BER (School Hall Rippoffs), Global Warming SCAM (Windmills & Green Jobs - What Bloody Green Jobs!), 114 Pollies on the Gravy Train Junket Trip to Copenhagen (Where Kevin Rudd wanted to sign Australia's Sovereignty over to the Globalist UN and the World Bank), Open Borders, Insulation Disaster, Increased Charges and Taxes (Had a Look at your Electricity Bill Lately?), a Firesale of Public Assets, The Cost of Living has Gone through the Roof!, 1 Major F...Up after Another and the list goes On & On On & On On & On..! Forgot to mention the Overpiced 'White Elephant' the NBN!

THINK ABOUT THIS..! The Labor Parties backed by Unions across the entire Country have HIJACKED our DEMOCRACY never listening to the public who voted them in. Selling off Sate Assets, Destroying our Hospitals, Raising Taxes, Demeaning our Workforce i.e. More people are forced into Contract work & Decreasing Hours worked. When was the last time a Labor Politician LISTENED to any of us??? There will be NO DEMOCRACY left until the public stands up to the OLIGARCHY that runs our States & Country..! That means both Labor & Liberal.

There Was No effing Global Finacial Crisis in Australia, but thanks to Labor...There is Now just the way they had planned it! Nobody & I mean Nobody in their right minds would continue to Spend like Drunken sailors and rack up Debt after Debt after Debt when the rest of World is going Broke!

We have a Govt. who have declared Economic War on our own Country!
