View Full Version : The great fire of Hong Kong

Four days ago a huge fire burnt seven buildings in a housing estate in Tai Po, Hong Kong. The number of deaths has already reached 146 as of today and the final death toll may be near 300 as there are more than 100 people missing. This is the worst disaster in contemporary history of Hong Kong and is one of the deadliest residential fires in recent decades.

There were immediate accusations of corruption. The owners of the eight buildings were forced to rejuvenate the outer layer of the buildings. Their resistance was to no avail as government departments did not intervene. Each owner paid some 160 thousands (20 thousand USD), but the result was loss of their homes and lives.

In my view there is the possibility of a conspiracy at a high level, akin to the Grenfell Tower fire or the Maui fire. The first building caught fire on 2nd floor and in less than 10 minutes it was a towering inferno of 31 floors. It then spread to six other buildings in about three hours. I suspect this was very unnatural. The buildings were in more or less a straight line and they were not close together. Weird still, fire engines were amassing in Shenzhen border, which is not far (about 20-30 minutes) ready to help and yet the fire department of HK or other authorities refused their entry.

I am unable to obtain much information such as eyewitness reports. True information is hard to obtain, a hallmark of conspiracy. I did not see video footage of how the fire jumped so easily, if any is publicly available.

If there is more revealing information I will post on this thread. One interesting figure that is very curious, why 7 buildings out of 8. The one left unscathed is just two buildings to the right.

56383iThe nearest building is where the fire started, the right-most is not affected while the 5 on the left got burnt.

I cant fathom the suffering and loss of this tragedy. I can only hope they were removed from their bodies before too much pain

Horrifying and devastating.

Not meaning to be flippant but the first thing I noticed was the buildings are still standing...

Winston and Matt give a pretty good argument for how, and give their opinions on why, this terrible fire happened.

Fire segment starts at 19:50/1:42:15, ends at 46:20.
About bamboo as material for scaffolding 21:30-22:48, and about its resistance to fire 31:20+.
The safety netting plastic first mention 22:48, further vid of burn tests 34:45.
Styrofoam used to protect windows 39:~00.

Somewhere in there, is discussion of corruption. Contractors using cheaper materials than planned/authorized and then pocketing the difference, like what causes tofu dreg construction. Regulatory authorities not upholding proper standards, likely taking bribes but also maybe acting on CCP orders to punish the envied HK.

"The deadly fire at Hong Kong shocked the world — but the tragedy wasn’t caused by fate. It was the result of a full-scale system failure. Substandard mainland-made materials, illegal safety nets, ignored complaints, failed inspections, and politically backed contractors all created the perfect storm. Officials blamed bamboo scaffolding, but residents point to the real culprit: collapsing oversight and declining standards under Beijing’s rule. This disaster exposed how Hong Kong’s governance has deteriorated and why such a fire could only happen today. In this episode, we unpack what truly caused the blaze — and what it reveals about Hong Kong’s future."

(From 11:52 into the video, a brief segment about what construction "short cuts" are commonly used in China, which provides a good leadin to the long segment about the Hong Kong fires, which starts at 14:45. The guys go into a lot more detail, both from their own personal experiences in Hong Kong and many other reports, ending at 46:25. )

(OOps--Johnnycomelately beat me to posting The China Show, but it's good to see another forum member paying attention to those two guys, who regularly give first hand accounts from personal experience as to what's really going on in China, and they also pay close attention to other credible sources on a subject that is difficult to fathom unless you pay very close attention. )

My timing was off, but the vision was clear. In this video, I predicted the fires in Hong Kong.

raskoinavov/ aside from the tragic reality, this is an important thing to note. the world does not get too many examples of these fires for comparison.
WTC Building 7 fell from a fire? really? And lucky low life Larry made a bundle on it. Not that i needed proof but this Hong Kong fire further proves what most of us already knew.

If the shells of the buildings are still standing, it is no doubt because they were built before the CCP took over Hong Kong, when standards were still in place.
Things have been going steadily downhill since that time, and the added on construction to the destroyed buildings was obviously of "tofu dreg" quality.
...Countless examples of which have been continually aired in videos and reports of shoddy, very dangerous construction practices all over mainland China, "the land of shortcuts", for years now.

Horrifying and devastating.

Thank you gini. The prediction is eeriely accurate. There was a report that the fire started from building 3 (count from the right in the OP map, the rightmost in the image here), then to 4 and then 6. This photo proved the report was right. How did the fire jump to the other face of building 6? Almost all reports are murky in description, even the main video from South China Morning Post in the first post does not give the timeline in detail.
