While walking back from an area where I spread my ashes from my fireplace, I found a small solitary feather lying on the snow at my feet. My Heart felt Light and I said, "Thank You!"
Who did I thank?

The way I see it, Roman, is that your 'thanking' something/someone out loud, was you giving voice and human expression to your spiritual experience of abundance, joy and gratitude in that moment.
I guess 'thank you' were the only words you could come close to finding within the human language to express the depth of that feeling which has no words in the English language.
Now, you are trying to literalise it :)

Gratitude needs no subject or object. Gratitude can just be gratitude.

I've had experiences like that Roman, whispers of wonder and murmurs of mystery just when my heart needed them. And funny, when I say thank you - my heart expands as if it could contain the entire universe, so I've taken to thanking the universe :)

I have done as you have describe.
When such things occur I am thanking the Universe as a whole, and everything that directly (through circumstance, etc.) and indirectly set in motion the chain of causality that resulted in (in your case) the feather lying in wait for you. Which is to say,... the Universe. ^_~
I also like Whiskey Mystic's point.

To be honest, I tend to struggle for a specific name. I will interchange the names I associate with those types of experiences, angels, god, the universe, higher self, the divine. When it comes down to it, the name isn't important, it's the way it feels in your heart when you experience it.

Gratitude is in the moment of being as a expression of Love for what is/has been experienced.
By the one experiencing in the grace of all.
