No doubt congress critters will find a way around this but :clap2: CHEERS :clap2: for having enough people there to put up a fight.

From 2 sources (looked for 2nd as I found it hard to believe).

1st taken from James Gilliland's mailing list post and 2nd from Huffington:

The beast just got gutted but it is not over

Subject: BREAKING: House Blocks PATRIOT Act Extension!

Louise,

WHOA: The House just voted to block the extension of the USA PATRIOT Act. Nobody thought this was possible, but you and more than 55,000 other Demand Progress members have signed our petition urging members of Congress to vote against the extension.

Now, more than ever, we need people to keep the pressure on -- will you click here to ask your friends to sign on too?

The momentum is on our side, but the fight isn't over yet: The House leadership is almost certain to try again to pass the extension, and the Senate is likely to take the bill up next week.

We need to urge others to get involved right away. Will you click here to forward the petition to your friends?

Let's press forward and win this fight!

-- Aaron Swartz, David Segal, David Moon, and the Demand Progress team

Congress critters remember who paid them off after smoke n mirrors vote.

Oh the 2/3 vote didn't work ... let's lower the bar to 50% ... business as usual.

Nothing to see here folks ... move along

I was following this story yesterday and had to stand up and cheer about this myself. Several new congressmen interviewed talked about how they wanted time to go through this bill line by line instead of being forced to push it through as was done on the original bill. About time!

NPR is reporting that the House voted to extend portions of the Patriot Act.

The House on Monday agreed to a 10-month extension of three key law enforcement powers in the fight against terrorism that some privacy advocates from both the right and left regard as infringements on civil liberties.
