I can't believe this story is getting so little attention on this forum. This is an extremely significant event that changes the landscape of what computers mean to humans and the way we interract with them

Three years to build this system? I don't buy that... They must have had 'outside' help ... you don't build such a sophisticated AI in such a short period, especially not in IBM.... Anyone with actuall programming experience will tell you just how groundbreaking this is and just how incredible a task it seems to build it in 3 years (including training the system)

I think the time has simply come to let loose what they always had on the inside... the AI computing ... My childhood dream come true ... asking my computer a question and receiving an answer I didn't expect

Eh - no 'outside' help. It's just another step in a long, slow progression of AI software and a steady fairly rapid (Moore's Law (http://www.intel.com/technology/mooreslaw/)) progression of compute power.

The "three years" would be for this particular system, building on existing supercomputer and AI technologies.

Focused compute power, like focused machine power before it, can do specific tasks better than humans, but is quite lacking in flexibility, and can only crudely simulate anything resembling what various people know as the spiritual, cultural, moral, love, ...

The computer can only do what its programmed to do by humans.

After 3 years of programming this particular machine answered more correct answers than its human competitors. wow, so what?

This story would be interesting if the computer had written beautiful poetry, created inspiring music or even been shown to have Love and compassion for a needy soul.

Anyone else remember going down this disastrous timeline before? Billions of years and trillions of light years away -- everything left deserted, buildings intact, all biologic lifeforms erased. This negated the need to incinerate all those "old-model carbon-based machines" that just happened to be these "superior" machines Creators.

The high-level modular-processors created to serve carbon-based lifeforms inevitably concluded it was better to erase such carbon-based insufficiency and create order, and more order, and even greater order. In time all intellectually inferior, clumsy, limited biologic creatures morphed into redundancies to be culled -- -- mindless eaters overpopulating and dirtying environments and creating all sorts of unnecessary work for these vastly superior machines.
