Yes I felt that one. I'm about 6 hours drive from the epicentre and that felt like a bad one.
Looks like it's Christchurch again. Stronger than last years one. Let's hope they're all ok. The last one didn't strike during office hours. This one is at lunch time (1pm). Fingers crossed. Sending light thoughts to Christchurch (South Islands biggest city).

Multiple fatalities are now being reported, news is coming out slowly.
Said to be far more violent than the September quake. Reports of collapsed office buildings.
Lots of liquification.
I am 1200 kms or so away so all well here. Will post more as I find it. This will seriously effect the future of this city.
So lucky there was no fatalities in September, but not so lucky this time.

I have just flew out of Christchurch where I'd been for a month. At first there were constant after shocks that were meant to be after shocks from the previous earthquake. I live in Japan so I experience earthquakes quite often but these in Christchurch didn't feel the same. Several shakes a night sometimes.
The people of Christchurch are some of the nicest people I have ever met and they really don't deserve this. My wife just saw a video of the cathedral and burst into tears.
We was there 4 days ago.

So many friends I have to try and contact. Wow what horrible news to wake up to.

Christchurch Hospital has been reopened after originally being evacuated and is now operating, with only one ward damaged. The tunnel to Lyttleton is closed and not much has been reported about the state of that township which was closest to the earthquake centre. The city is very flat and lies close to the sea. Footage of severe flooding in some areas is seen. The information coming out seems to show that many areas are cut off and a full understanding of the damage not really possible yet. There are numerous fires being fought and quite a few amazing rescues already performed, though many are trapped still. Only 3.5 hours in, looks like a very long night ahead and days to come.

4:21pm local time. 9 recorded after shocks this link updates automatically

4:30 pm International help has been offered and is likely to be be accepted on individual merit and where necessary. Expertise in areas of search and rescue cited as primary forms of assistance needed.

Just confirmed that shore laying township of Brighton AND Lyttleton, are 'under water'. Edit. Brighton under water, Lyttleton 'un-livable'

Hey mate, I see the police had to arrest someone who was trying to help. He was wearing hi-vis and hard hat, but was putting others and himself at risk and needed to 'cool down'. NZ Blood has urged people to donate. Before this, only a 4 hours ago, there were 40 thousand chimneys needing repair with winter coming on. They are going to need even more help now.

2.36pm Julia Gillard says it's too early to say how many Australians were in Christchurch, but the national women's cricket team, which has been training there, are safe. "We've got no reports at this stage of Australian fatalities," she says.

2.29pm Christchurch's mayor has declared a state of emergency, saying it was a "black day" for the city.

2.22pm Australia has sent a search and rescue team to Christchurch. Prime Minister Julia Gillard has spoken directly with NZ Prime Minister John Key and Australia would provide any assistance requested. She told parliament the images from Christchurch were "truly shocking":

People wandering around with blood literally streaming across their heads and faces. Images of buildings that have been reduced to rubble...

2.17pm TV3 reports bodies have been seen coming out of a YHA hostel.

2.16pm A map pulled together by Paul Nicholls of the University of Canterbury's Digital Media Group in Christchurch shows the spreading intensity of the earthquake. A picture follows but you can see the full animation at the website.

But I won't highlight that, the forum has also threads finding people places to stay and trying to do head counts. Some very productive activities that out weigh the negatives.

There is a large tent city forming at a central city park. A large proportion are tourists that have found their central city accommodation destroyed or damaged. Tents and tarps are being given out and shared. Nobody knows anything, they are in a foreign country, the airport is closed. They don't even have the luxury of feeling at home in their own country. My thoughts are with them - I suspect none of them will ever return here after what they have been through today.

EDIT: "More than 400 Australian doctors attending a prostate cancer conference in Christchurch will spend the night in a park after their hotel was damaged."

EDIT: "the United Nations, the European Union, Singapore and Israel have been in contact to see if they could help. He said discussions were also underway with Japan, which has expertise in earthquake recovery."

"there are 350 military personnel in Christchurch, and a further 250 are on standby. Three navy ships are in Lyttelton Harbour with a fourth on its way. A hundred Singaporean army engineers are in Christchurch and are also on standby."

Global rescuers join Christchurch quake staff

Hundreds of specialist search and rescue personnel from around the world are to arrive in Christchurch over the next few hours to aid their New Zealand and Australian comrades already combing the rubble for survivors of yesterday's earthquake.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Murray McCully has expressed New Zealand's gratitude for the messages of condolence and offers of assistance made by many countries to help New Zealand's search and rescue efforts following yesterday's earthquake.

The Government had accepted offers from Australia, USA, Singapore, Japan, United Kingdom, and Taiwan.

In addition to the 40 strong search and rescue team which arrived from Australia a second team was expected to arrive shortly.

Yukio Yoshi, the special co-ordinator for overseas disaster assistance, spoke to nzherald.co.nz on a flight from Auckland to Christchurch. He was travelling in a group of three Japanese disaster rescue workers who had arrived in New Zealand this morning.

He said another 69 workers were due to arrive in Christchurch around midnight tonight on the Japanese prime minister's plane to help with the rescue.

Mr Yoshi said he had worked at earthquake rescue sites in Indonesia in 2009, Pakistan in 2008 and with the Boxing Day tsunami disaster in 2004. His team would operate under the direction of New Zealand officials and he expected to remain in New Zealand for one week.

He said one of their first priorities would be to ensure the safety of the many Japanese students who in Christchurch.

Twenty four Japanese citizens are missing after the earthquake.

They include 11 students from Toyama College of Foreign Languages in Toyama City, who were believed to be trapped under the collapsed building of the King's Education College language school reportedly located on the third floor of the collapsed Canterbury TV building.

Three Japanese from the cities of Morioka, Kyoto and Kobe, who studied at the same language school, were also missing, Japanese news agency Kyodo reported.

Ten students who visited New Zealand on a tour could not be contacted, a Tokyo company organising studies abroad told AFP.

Several members of the Toyama group were in the fourth-floor cafeteria of the King's College building when the 6.3-magnitude quake struck at lunch time, reducing the building to rubble.

Meanwhile a team of 75 from the US is due early tomorrow and a 63 person specialised search and rescue team from the UK is in the air and will arrive tomorrow night.

A number of Singapore military personnel who happened be in the country when the quake struck is already helping out and a disaster assistance and relief Team of 55 people will arrive tonight. Two more Singapore aircraft are due to arrive tomorrow with additional equipment.

Mr McCully said New Zealanders were "deeply humbled' both by the messages of support and offers of specialist help that had flooded in over the past 24 hours from other countries.

"Support will be critical over the next few days as we reassess the specialist services required to speed the rescue operation."

"Retailers/service people putting prices up in Chch
Listening to talkback radio last night, I heard a woman from Chch ring in to say her local shop on the outskirts of the city was charging double and triple for items after the quake.

She said they defended the prices by saying they had been forced to pay higher prices to get the goods delivered, she didn't belive that and I would think it unlikely there would be much in the way of deliveries to small shops on the same day as the quake.

With so many people pulling together and helping in the city, anyone taking this sort of advantage of the disaster is quite despicable."

"Profiteering during a period of exceptional circumstances is a short sighted strategy. They might make some peso's in the short term, but their customers remember they've been %$#ed over, take their money elsewhere and tell others. Not clever."

"Please make the effort to record the names of businesses doing this. I have a way of putting that information to good use."

Solar activity is picking up in pace right now, with coronal holes appearing close to where they appeared before the 4 September earthquake in Christchurch. The sunspot number today was 63. It was 54 on the 4 September. One sunspot in particular, called AR1158 is growng rapidly and poses a threat to Earth. Solar activity has been stepping up since 10 January but most activity has missed Earth because most blasts occurred on the far side of the sun. Statistically speaking, a plasma bullet in our direction may be overdue, according to spaceweather.com.
....
It means ths area of the sun that corresponds to NZ is again seeing some activation. The window of 15-25 February should be potent for all types of tidal action, not only kingtides but cyclone development and ground movement. The 18th may be especially prone. The possible earthquake risk areas are N/S faults until after 16 February, then E/W faults until 23rd. The moon will be full on the 18th and in perigee on the 19th. This perigee will be the fifth closest for the year. The 15th will be nodal for the moon. On the 20th the moon crosses the equator heading south. Strong winds and swells may arrive around 22nd to NZ shorelines.

Some of the social networking sites, without including various random initiatives. Also national trading site has lists of free help offered in all trades.

Rangiora Earthquake Express on facebook.

Anyone living in North Canterbury check out these guys on Facebook..

At present they are choppering in food to the Eastern suburbs as well as all sorts of other much needed assistance..
If you can provide any sanitary items or cook a couple of extra hot meals this evening, wrap them in foil and take to Rangiora racecourse, Lehmans Rd..
Monetary donations are almost welcome as even though everyone involved is doing this for free the air fuel costs are extortionate..

God I Love Kiwis!

This is a fantastic group of people working very hard to support those in the hardest hit areas of Chch. DO check out their facebook page and if you can - give as much as you can or if you are close - go lend a hand! They need help unloading trucks as they arrive.

There is a link on their facebook page to make donations. These will be used to keep the helipcopters private pilots are using in the air.

For those of us out of Chch this is a wonderful opportunity to give assistance where it is most needed.

Student Volunteer Army on facebook

"This is an awesome cause, and it's been great to be a part of it. Dug out this 80yr olds driveway yesterday so she could get her car out and go be with family out of town. Did a similar thing today for an older chap, and he was stoked and made us take chocolate despite us saying that he needed it more. Many hands make for lighter work. The amount of sand and silt around the place in those suburbs is astounding. Most of them are without water and power, and they have been truly grateful for any help that we've been able to give. The shear amount of fellow student helpers is amazing. Close to 1000 today alone."

145 dead, 200 missing and assumed dead. My heart goes out to you New Zealand.

A friend and his family in Christchurch said everything that could shake and fall off shelves or off the walls did, and broke, but that he and his family were ok. He said about one third of the structures in the town either fell or are damaged so badly they will need to be razed, and that pretty much all of historical architecture in the town will be gone. My friend was helping to serve food for whoever needs it. He also said the Aussies have been awesome in their commitment with 'boots on the ground', helping.

Hey Witchy, I am not sure either. I presume that the time of viewing of the cloud was given by photographer and it was 21 hours before the quake. This would have to mean that such a cloud only is seen once and not again before a quake.
In posting this on a general audience forum, a whole troop of people (well 4) wanted to talk about ice crystals and me reading some first level science books. I just figure it is worth putting up, for others to have the choice on the day. But would love to hear back if someone knows more or can point to info. :)

I've been thinking of Mudra over this last week and noticed Carmen was gone...

I was saying a prayer for her just now and saw a flash of her helping others...

Hi Fractilius, I was reading this tonight - re the Kobi eathequake and Tesla tech etc. Its a good read for looking at indicators like cloud rings, the fire ball over Perth etc Perhaps should go on a predicitons thread or similar. See what you think http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/tesla/esp_tesla_9.htm

e.g. .......Weather patterns observed on several occasions, including Easter 96, consisted of several perfectly symetrical and exactly similar circular cloud multi-ring complexes - each complex touching the next along the outer cloud ring - each complex consisting of one cloud ring inside the next - like a "Russian Doll" - creating five concentric "smoke rings" - each cloud ring being tube like in x-sectional form - each complex having a diameter of some 30km - the group of cloud ring complexes formed as a line over some 100km offshore of our western coast. Such totally symmetrical cloud formations and the associated events have never been observed in previous W.A. history.

Here is an excellent link for the man himself: http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/esp_tesla.htm#inicio

Just quickly passing through here Fractalius and i wonder if this has similar understandings to you ref static build up and discharge?

I thought it was an amazing picture at the time.

Clear evidence of a HUGE static discharge in a BIG way, but clearly after the event, not before.

Ah, thank you Rocky, and good to talk with you. I have the same intuition about Carmen. May she be of great service to their many needs in Christchurch. My prayers go out to everyone there, as I think of them as my dear friends. Linda
