Dear Avalon friends across the world.

Our democracy is at risk. Media-mogul Rupert Murdoch wants to extend his massive political influence by taking over BSkyB and controlling nearly half the British media! We have just 24 hours to press the government to stand up for British media and democracy and stop Rupert Murdoch

In 24 hours, nearly half our mass media could be owned by Rupert Murdoch.

For four decades he has interfered with our democracy -- determining election results, bolstering politicians in exchange for influence, and smearing others who refuse his orders. But he may have finally gone too far -- with just 24 hours left before the decision, the coalition is still deeply divided on Murdoch's bid for BSkyB.

The government is deciding right now whether Murdoch can gain control of one of Britain's largest news corporations. Let's tip the balance against Murdoch's attempt to tighten his grip on our media. Click to send an urgent message directly to key decision makers on the BSkyB bid and send this on to everyone -- let's flood our politicians with tens of thousands of messages telling them we want Murdoch’s hands off our democracy:

Murdoch has used his vast media empire to push war in Iraq, elect George W Bush, and block global action on climate change, and if he wins this week in Britain he will use his networks here to undermine all the issues that we care about. He has manipulated US, British and Australian democracy for years, but now he wants more complete control. In the US, most of the likely Republican presidential candidates are actually paid employees of Murdoch! When his Fox News Network was shunned by Barack Obama as a mere propaganda mouthpiece, it spawned the far right "tea party"and broadcast constant, often hate-filled attacks against Obama and his healthcare and peace agenda -- resulting in a huge win for Republicans in the 2010 congressional elections.

Murdoch media staff have trampled laws and standards when gathering news. Several News Corporation executives approved phone hacking and, when a formal investigation began, they had regular secret meetings with senior police officers who then failed to investigate the full extent of the scandal. Our government should punish such an organisation, not allow it monopoly powers over our media. But if Rupert Murdoch is allowed to buy all of BSkyB this week, he will soon own half of our newspapers and television. This should not be allowed in any democracy.

We can turn the tide on this powerful threat to our democracy. In the end the News of the World phone hacking scandal forced David Cameron’s communications director to resign. And a mass outcry from Canadian Avaaz members recently prevented a Murdoch-style TV network from getting taxpayer funding and stopped the Canadian government from removing the journalistic standards that would prevent this new network from spreading lies to the public. The fight against Murdoch has just begun, but already we've begun to win. Let's do the same in Britain!

Besides the fact that murdoch is a scumbag, the comment I wanted to make is this; democracy sucks and you are welcome to it.

Our democracy is at risk.

If I may share a part of my reply from another thread:

Dictatorship: the appearance of one - 'same as' - Communism: the government (the appearance of the few) control corporations - 'same as' - Democracy: the corporations (the non-appearance of the few) control the government = (in theory) 51% of the population can take away the rights of 49% = corporate policy rules the people as they have been made into 'law' (voluntary compliance) = Dictatorship (the CEO or president) controls. Which government is being forced around the world and by whom!?

Is democracy being at risk really a problem!?

[Post Edit]

In a true republic 99% of the population cannot take away the rights of 1%.

After experiencing this world for 50 + looking back into events of the past , and looking around me in the now , i see that mankind cannot govern mankind, even tho there has been good systems, ways of life, nations, traditions, that held integrity and proper law as a whole, there still are ,many of good intent that do not have rigid minds and hardened hearts ...there has been and is still now an infiltration of many who have forgotton who they truly are ,and even those who have never known ,it seems that they hold sway in the physical ,but the physical is only part of the whole.....all are gathered here now in form or without form , with many observing ,as the events are unfolding day by day for their own particular purpose that not any of us fully know about, until such time as it is given , and interpereted correctly in these very confusing times .....Stay well

I think it is important, howsoever an illusion. As Foucault says power always seeks to rebalance itself - from the illusion that is democracy comes many things in the name of democracy that are worth having - a small victory for the people and I for one think the British media is one of those (I'm not saying it is perfect, very very far from it).

I also think preserving the integrity and impartiality of the British media is greatly important and a worthwhile fight. There is also a wider picture also, other than democracy issues - just think of all those nasty subliminal messages old Murdock and his cronies can send out to their accumulating audience.

...i see that mankind cannot govern mankind...

Is not what has been (and is) seen a reflection of what is - and not of potential and ability!? Are not these times influenced by 'them' and not only by the doing of the few!? I say, humankind has the potential and ability; however, to understand why things are now is to know what the ancients knew.

Cant disagree with you , those who come from knowing themselves , kindness, and an open mind in the physical with an understanding of spiritual values ,it has always and is now still open for all who choose to do so,i feel that gate or window or opportunity has always been there, perhaps with varying degrees at diffrent times, it is certainly here now .One thing that comes to mind in saying this is ,if a person, or consciousness ,because we are one only of many consciousness upon this earth , is absolutley & truthfully in the dark and could not see or relate to, or understand basic moral values ,and respect for " all life " including their own,.. in times past ...... the opportunity at this time , is now here with tremendous support , as it has never been before.......im sure the human consciousness could live in harmony with itself and all others ....but it cannot be done alone with a singular connection to the physical...it must be a connection to both realms in unity .....we are al still finding our way day by day ....a work in progress to finding that connection and unity .... im looking forward to the breaking of this cycle completley ,im sure many are ...but it will be in Creators time in Earths way, we also are all here ,so we have our little part to play... in my understanding , the only time we can change this to a better future is in the present ....Blessings
