I absolutely agree leelah. I would really like to see a monthly or quarterly membership fee. I'm not talking about breaking the bank. I think that reasonable is in order here.

If certain people cause a storm over this then I would take a long hard look at the individuals and ask myself 'why'?. I see no problem here, we are all grown ups aren't we? Seriously whats the problem with donating to a non profit site, we all reap the benefits don't we?

Yes your very right, but there was a select group of people that did take offence to such an idea. i.e paid membership. I was making you aware of what happened, thats all.

The upset was over donating to a member who was in financial straights. We're talking about donating to support The Avalon Project using the Donation button on the Home page. There shouldn't be a problem with that!

Thank you for this. My donations are tiny. I am grateful that there are others for me to add to. I hope that the reason he hasn't acknowledged it is because of all the other donations. Maybe it has swamped him too much for thank-yous. That said, even though my donation is tiny, I am hoping to consistently do the same on a monthly basis. I hope those that are afraid to give too little, I ask the same of you. Skip a movie or ONE cocktail, once a month in a box for Bill. If he had a steady income of tiny donations, none of this would ever become an issue. (Or...drink 5 less sodas a month:)
PS, I don't see why joining Charles site would exclude us from this one...

I don't want to see a mandatory membership fee because alot of people including myself have very little extra money. I am borrowing money from friends and family to make it right now and would not be able to stay on a paid site. But I am all for a voluntary monthly subscription that can be automatically withdrawn from a members paypal account or credit card.

Hello Avalonians,

This is my humble philosophy on this topic............
Discussing how much to pay someone, or how much to donate is very sensitive to all but especially the reciever.
Mr. Ryan is working mega hours, and thousands of people if not more benefit from his work.
Mr. Ryan has a philosophy of not allowing advertisments on his site or charge for membership. That is good and ethical of him as money can color any project.

Unless he has some sort of trust fund, investments, is collecting a pension, is being supported by another, has some major product that produces ongoing income, imagine how he gets his everyday expenses and needs paid for?

It is none of our business what Mr. Ryan has or not has but he has already shared a few facts that indicates that working essentially for free is not allowing him to adquately meet his needs work wise or personaly.
So I humbly suggest to stop thinking the other guy or gal will do what most of us need to do. Quietly, just provide what you can on a regular basis. Donate to Avalon or send it directly to him if an address is available; and if you see him in person, hand him an envelope and say thanks. The important thing is to not make a big thing of it, just TAKE action the best way you can. I prefer anonymous donations and cash gifts, it just feels cleaner that way for all, but this is just how I do things. The only other thing I would suggest is a monthy reminder perhaps highlighting the donation button and asking..... have you made your contribuion to Avalon this month, to this dazzing ongoing project? or somethinng like that.

It is important to accept that some people can't afford not even five dollars a month. and that is okay; some peope can skip one dinner out or one movie out as one Avalonian suggested, and use those funds as a monthly donation; and then there are those who do have big budgets and big assets who can easily choose to donate to this onging project. As my daddy use to say........"sometimes talk can be cheap when simple action is all that is required."

But that is all just my perspective.

It would be nice to have more options to the Paypal payments, but, I've no idea if that comes with a cost when setting it up.

It occurs to me the one person who should be consulted about this, hasn't. I'm sure he'd be grateful for any help though.

Perhaps if Bill were to give us an idea (not the details obviously) of his endeavours we could rally more effectively. Certainly it would nurture an aspect of this community. As it will still be donation based, the freedom of choice is unharmed - it will merely add structure to the overall efforts.

I just wanted to pop in and say, once I get a job I will be sending my donation. At the moment my balance is zero. Lucky I have a wonderful girlfriend to support me. I have an interview for a job on Monday, so hopefully things will change for me..

Even if it was $10 / year, I think it would separate some of the wheat from the chaff.

For folks who seriously couldn't afford it, I bet we would be willing to help each other out when people are interested in keeping the signal / noise ratio in a good place.

I do think it being entirely free brings some noise that wouldn't be here if people had to pay to bring it.

Then again there is the potential to miss out on some important bits by charging.

I'm sorry but I would rather people give what and if they can. I'm certain beyond a doubt that this is the only way Bill would wish it. Believe me, there have been times in my life that $10 was a miracle. I have asked permission to post this and have been told I can.

Firstly tho, I would like to say:

Richard and Bill are both my friends in equal measure, ( they will both confirm this) I have worked closely with them longer than anyone here. Both are wonderful Men in ther own right. Both do an enormous amount of work and their energy is humbling to me. I love them Equally.

I was asked by Charles to help set up his site. I offered to do so for free and walk away once it is complete. I was then asked if I would stay on there if it was paid. I said I am always open to new ventures and my current paid job will be ending soon so I would consider that seriously once I got the details. That's the last I heared. As far as i know, being one of "the 18" means being part of the administration of that site.

I will let u all know how that plays out

Also: Richards site, http://nexus.2012info.ca/forum/forum.php has nothing to do with Charles. Richard has had this site for almost 3years, mostly ignored, due to the hours he has put into Avalon. When he left Avalon 2 days ago, he upgraded it to VB.

I sincerely hope this clears up any conjecture and confusion.
