Tsunami warning issued for Hawaii, Pacific
Watch issued for California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska

HONOLULU — A tsunami warning issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii after a large earthquake in Japan was widened beyond East Asia late Thursday to include Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Central and South America and the rest of the Pacific Ocean.

The warning was issued Thursday at 9:31 local time. Sirens were sounded about 30 minutes later in Honolulu alerting people in coastal areas to evacuate, and the first waves were expected to arrive at 2:55 a.m. local time (7:55 a.m. ET) Friday.

About 70 percent of Hawaii's population resides in Honolulu, and as many as 100,000 tourists are in the city on any given day.

"A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along the coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's bulletin said. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

Victor Sardina, a geophysisist for the center, told the Honolulu Star-Adviser that 12- to 14-foot waves could hit the town of Hilo on the island of Hawaii and the town of Haleiwa on Oahu.

Residents in Oahu were lining up to get gas, the Star-Adviser reported.

A tsunami watch was issued for California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the California-Mexico border to Chignik Bay, Alaska.

The Oregonian newspaper said any wave which reached the coast could hit just before 7:30 a.m. local time (3:30 p.m. ET) Friday.

Southeast Asia braces
In the Philippines, officials ordered an evacuation of coastal communities along the country's eastern seaboard in expectation of a tsunami following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan.

Disaster management officials in Albay province southeast of Manila say they ordered residents to move to designated evacuation sites that are at least 15 feet above sea level.

In Guam, authorities advised people to evacuate low areas of the U.S. territory and seek ground higher than 50 feet above sea level and 100 feet inland.

The Northern Mariana Islands, another U.S. territory, was also under the warning, and the Hyatt Regency in Saipan has moved guests to three highest floors of the seven-story hotel.

Hotel spokesman Luis Villagomez said the hotel had received about three tsunami warnings in the last year but no serious damage.

Tsunami warnings are issued due to the imminent threat of a tsunami. The coast of North America is not included in the warning.

This is a breaking news story. Please check back for updates.

NOAA issues list of estimated tsunami arrival times for locations along the North American Pacific coast

http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/2011/03/11/lhvpd9/01/webetalhvpd9-01.txt

The following list gives estimated times of arrival for
locations along the North American Pacific coast from a
tsunami generated at the given source location. The
list is ordered by arrival time starting with the earliest.
Since tsunami speed is directly related to
water depth, tsunami ETAs can be computed independent of
tsunami amplitude. THE LISTING OF A TSUNAMI ARRIVAL TIME
BELOW DOES NOT INDICATE A WAVE IS IMMINENT. The listed arrival
time is the initial wave arrival. Tsunamis can be dangerous
for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not
necessarily the largest.

Taiwan, Philippines, Russia on tsunami alert

TAIPEI: Taiwan, Philippines and Russia authorities have issued a tsunami warning after a powerful quake struck off Japan on Friday.

Taiwan's central weather bureau on Friday warned people living on the island's east and northeast coasts to be on guard for tsunamis set off by a major quake off Japan.

Waves are expected to reach Hualien and Taitung on the island's east coast around 0930 GMT and the northeastern port of Keelung half an hour later, the bureau said.

"We urge residents in coastal areas to be on their guard and take precaution while we continue to monitor the development of tsunamis," it said in a statement.

The Philippines warned people living on its east coast to be on alert for the possibility of tsunamis after a major quake off Japan, the government's eismology agency said.

"There is no evacuation order but people living along the entire length of the country's east coast should be on alert and await further instructions," the agency's chief Renato Solidum said in a nationwide radio broadcast.

Russia's emergency ministry issued a tsunami warning for the Kuril Island chain after a powerful quake struck off Japan, officials said.

"A potential tsunami warning is declared for the Kuril chain that includes four islands claimed by Japan," a spokeswoman for regional emergencies ministry told AFP.

"People are being evacuated," spokeswoman Yekaterina Potvorova said. She added that the tsunami warning did not include the nearby Sakhalin Island.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has put the territories of Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Micronesia and Hawaii under a lower tsunami watch.

Philippines orders tsunami evacuation

Philippine officials are ordering an evacuation of coastal communities along the country's eastern seaboard in expectation of a tsunami following an 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan.

Philippine Volcanology and Seismology Institute director Renato Solidum says the first 1-metre high waves are expected to hit the northernmost Batanes islands by 5pm local time (2000 AEDT) on Friday.

Disaster management officials in Albay province southeast of Manila say they have ordered residents to move to designated evacuation sites that are at least 5 metres above sea level.

Tsunami alert issued in Russia's Far East following Japan earthquake

2011-03-11 16:45:41 FeedbackPrintRSS

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A tsunami alert was issued in the Sakhalin region in Russia's Far East shortly after a massive earthquake measuring 8.8 magnitude hit northeastern Japan Friday.

According to Russia's state news agency, RIA Novosti, the regional Tsunami Research Center, Sakhalin AHEM, declared the warning for coastal communities of three districts of the Sakhalin region: Yuzhno-Kuril, Kuril and Northern Kuril.

People in these areas were being evacuated to safe places. Possible consequences of the passage of tsunami waves were being calculated.

Rescuers have called on local residents in the threatened areas to leave the coast immediately and take shelter in nearby hills, 30-40 meters above the sea level.

Emergency services were on alert to respond to the consequences of the tsunami.

Finally found this (someone was asking on the Japan EQ thread):

Civil Defence issues NZ tsunami warning after Japan quake

10:52 PM Friday Mar 11, 2011

Civil Defence has issued a marine tsunami warning for New Zealand after a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck Japan early tonight, NZ time, but says it does not expect it to pose a threat for people on land.

A wave of up to 1 metre may reach the coasts of the central and northern North Island from about 6.30am tomorrow, but the first arrival was expected to coincide with a low tide.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said in an 8.30pm (NZ time) bulletin a tsunami warning was in place for New Zealand, Australia and most countries bordering the Pacific Ocean.

"The New Zealand Tsunami Expert Panel assessment is that this is a marine threat only for New Zealand," Civil Defence said just after 10pm.

"A Marine Threat means strong and unusual currents are possible in the sea, rivers and estuaries. No land threat is expected at this time."

Past experience and tsunami models indicated that the largest impact would be a wave of up to 1m reaching East Cape northwards and from Kaipara northwards.

Waves would continue for several hours, and the first one may not be the largest, Civil Defence warned.

The last place expected to be hit would be Nelson, about 11.15am.

The Ministry of Civil Defence Emergency Management and scientific advisors were closely monitoring the situation to determine the severity of the threat to New Zealand.

People in New Zealand coastal areas were warned to stay off beaches and out of the water.

A 4-metre tsunami washed away cars and tore away buildings along Japan's eastern coast near the epicentre after the massive earthquake hit at 2.46pm (6.46pm NZT).

The death toll had reached 19, press reports said tonight, and officials were trying to assess damage, injuries and deaths from the quake but had no immediate details.

There are an estimated 100 New Zealanders in the northeastern part of Japan worst-affected by the quake and tsunami, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman said.

The number was an estimate because not all travellers registered with the embassy.

There were 3500 New Zealand registered as travelling or living in the whole of Japan and about 1600 of those were known to be in Tokyo.

The New Zealand embassy in Tokyo had reported no casualties among its staff, but the spokeswoman said there had not yet been any contact with Bunzo Kamei, a businessman who is consul in Sendai, one of the worst-affected cities. That city has a population of 1 million, and is about 360km north of Tokyo.

The quake struck at a depth of 24km, about 125km off the eastern coast, the agency said. The area is 380km northeast of Tokyo.

That was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later.

The meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coast of Japan. NHK was warning those near the coast to get to safer ground.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety, and TV footage showed fires across the city in buildings and at an oil refinery.

A New Zealander who is co-director of the Australian Tsunami Research Centre and Natural Hazards Research Lab at NSW University, Professor James Goff, said that though Japan had a rigorous earthquake building code and excellent tsunami warning system and evacuation plans the powerful and relatively shallow quake would likely provide a severe test.

An Australian seismologist based in Canberra, Kevin McCue, said the quake was the largest recorded in Japan.

There had been seven earthquakes in Japan over magnitude 8 since 1891.

In 1923 the 7.9 magnitude Kanto earthquake killed 147,000 people, and Mr McCue said it was likely that many people had been killed in the latest quake, even though it was further north of Tokyo than the Kanto earthquake.

This was within less than a day of that X-Class Flare (it was about two hours after sunrise in Japan when the Flare popped) - I'm gonna go ahead and guess that's not a coincidence.

Has the water begun to recede in Hawaii, California, Oregon, etc... yet ? Anyone of you near those areas ? Any links ?

I am on Coast in Northern California, 100' above sea level and safe, however, 7 miles south the town has a mandatory evacuation for 8-9 hours. Businesses are closed down, the bay water has receded, portions of Hwy 101 are closed along Bay, and everyone advised to go to higher ground.

Friends is Coos Bay, OR area along coast are also evacuated.

Extensive damage reported at Brookings harbor

SEASIDE — Authorities in Southern Oregon say tsunami surges have done extensive damage in the harbor at Brookings, near the California border.

Curry County Sheriff John Bishop says several vessels were sunk, half a dozen others were swept to sea, and much of the commercial part of the basin was destroyed. He says damages will run in the millions of dollars.

He says one man with a history of heart problems was found dead aboard a commercial vessel.

Four people at a beach north of Brookings were swept into the sea, but all survived. Bishop says one went to the hospital.

Tsunami: Docks ripped out in Fort Bragg fishing community

Surges of water hit the tiny town of Fort Bragg, 200 miles south of Crescent City, witnesses say, ripping out docks and filling the water with debris, and closing off exits and entrances to the port.

Fort Bragg is an epicenter of California's fishing community, and dozens of boats leave from there to fish crab, black cod and salmon.

"It's pretty brutal," said Charles D. Smith, a fisherman who owns a boat called the Miss Smith. "The ends of the docks are floating around all over the place."

Smith got down to the harbor early in the morning and battened down his hatches. Other fishermen sailed to sea earlier Friday to escape damage in port. There won't be anywhere for them to dock when they return, he said.

"They lucked out in a sense -– they're not going to have to run around cleaning stuff up," he said.

The harbor commission will have to replace the docks and clear away the debris, which could slow down fishing in and out of the harbor, a sleepy place where sea lions often sun themselves. It's currently black cod season.

"It's a nuisance," Smith said.

John Gebers, who owns Noyo Fishing Center, in the harbor at Fort Bragg, said that four-foot surges are still rolling in and up the river that winds out of Noyo Bay.

"It's strange, it makes it look like the river reverses direction," he said by phone from the riverbank, where 50 people were standing to watch from land. "It's still surging."

Fort Bragg and Crescent City were the two cities hit hardest by the tsunami caused by a 1964 earthquake.

FEMA held a news conference Friday morning to update damage reports after an 8.9 earthquake in Japan generated a tsunami that hit the California coast.

The entire California coast remained under a tsunami warning effect until 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. local time, but FEMA said the waves were starting to die down as of 11 a.m.

Santa Cruz harbor and Crescent City harbor suffered the most damage. There were no damage reports from Southern California.

In Crescent City the Coast Guard was called in to search for a 25-year-old man who was swept out to sea by a powerful wave generated by the tsunami. Officials say the man was taking photos with two friends near the mouth of the Klamath River in Del Norte County. The two friends were able to get back to shore, but the man coudl not make it back. At 1:45 p.m. the Del Norte County Sheriff's office said the Coast Guard recovered his body. Four other people were rescued across the state line in Oregon. They were also taking photos of the waves.

FEMA said Crescent City suffered the worst damage from the tsunami. A wave at 8:44 a.m. was measured at 8.1-feet, destroying piers, docks and several boats. In 2006, the area suffered $10 million in damage from a tsunami and locals said Friday's damage was much worse.

FEMA said most of the damage was to private property, which should not impact California's dire fiscal situation. A representative said insurance companies would be responsible for repairing damage to private boats and docks.

Crescent City was one of the first tsunami ready communities in the United States and federal officials said that paid off Friday. Crescent City, which is close to the Oregon state line, was the scene of a deadly tsunami back in 1964 that killed 11 people and destroyed 289 homes and businesses.

The tidal flows from the tsunami surges literally drained the harbor of water for a time, according to a city official.

The preliminary damage estimate was $2 million in Santa Cruz, where a proclamation of a local emergency has been declared by the Director of Emergency Services.

Due to the nature of the tsunami, subsequent waves are likely to occur which may be higher than the initial wave and can cause serious damage and flooding, official warned....

just curious, my fellow starship explorers the council of starship avalon is now in session, what does everyone think about the japan quake, what does your third eye, tell you.. to me this feels man made, my heart drops for everyone in japan dealing with this....peace be upon you...

yes i happened to catch it live on tv.. as it happened.. just like 9/11..
the helicopters just happened to be down the coast as the first wave hit.. and you could see people getting wiped off bridges infront of your eyes in real time..
My first thought was holy **** wasn't there supposed to be a harrp attack on japan that was written in a thread here somewhere.
how does it economically help the desperate ptb? how much farmland and food was destroyed that is exported to other countries? will japan turn into a third world country from this? is this so japan will definitely consider the new world currency to get itself out of the debt it will ensue?
they are the first questions in my mind..
Ok whistelblowers your turn to the table now..

First thoughts, I wouldn't bet against this being a man made catastrophe, possibly in full knowledge and understanding of the recent solar and lunar activity to use it as a very viable decoy as to how this actually happened.
