The Moon will be at its closest point to the Earth in 18 years on the 19th March 2011. This is called an extreme super moon. The moon will only be 221,567 miles away on this date. The increase in the moon's gravitational pull is thought, by some scientists, to increase the likelihood of geological disasters suchs as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Other scientists think that it will only increase the high tides and decrease the low tides.
I think that this theory holds some water especially as the Indonesian Tsunami was around the time of a Super moon as well.
What do you think?

I'd like to know what suddenly makes the moon move closer to the earth?

the moons orbit is elliptical so its distance from us always varies basically :)
it will be at its closest point at 6:10 pm ut/gmt according to this 21st Century SuperMoon Alignments (http://www.astropro.com/features/tables/cen21ce/suprmoon.html)
here's an article that was published by a sister site of space.com ARTICLE (http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20110310/sc_space/willmarch19supermoontriggernaturaldisasters) "Will March 19 'Supermoon' Trigger Natural Disasters?"
wouldn't it be a perfect cover for a haarp attack, found a lot of stuff online relating to it causing disasters
guess we'll find out soon enough :)

Well if this 'Super Moon' is getting closer to us (obviously) then it is possibly responsible for todays Japan 8.9 scale quake?
If so, God help us from now until the 19 march when it reaches its closest orbit.
If it can create a 8.9 now it doesn't bare thinking about how bad it could be on the 19th, a magnitude 9 or above perhaps? now thats scary!
And as already stated, what an opportune time for TPTW to settle some scores using HAARP with the perfect cover story of a 'Super Moon'

Thanks, Kesom.
I read that the last Super moon was 20 years ago.
I know the moon is baffling and breaks all the normal astronomical rules - yet up until recently you could predict it's cycles like clockwork. It doesn't seem to make any sense to me that it's something that occurs at such long intervals and for no apparent reason.
There must be something affecting the orbit to make it do something out of it's ordinary ecliptic.
And - I do think the moon is going to be framed.
Assuming it is the moon.

Maybe 'they're' going to try to pass Elenin (or Niburu) off as the moon.
Just brainstorming.
