China is tightening up its online censorship even more, the Times reports.
The story recounts an eye-opening anecdote: a Chinese entrepreneur was on the phone with his girlfriend, and quipped, quoting Shakespeare: "The lady doth protest too much." Upon the word "protest," the phonecall cut off. He was speaking in English, but this has also happened to people speaking in Mandarin, so it's not just a one-off.

Thanks a lot. The full article is well worth reading. Shows China is becoming a model nation - for the PTB. They have the numbers to enforce this kind of censorship in real time. I wonder how long it will be before this policy can be implemented worldwide?

......no different Down-Under
If You Say "Global Warming is Crap" in Australia, you are a Holocaust Denier!
Sorry Calz for my play on semantics but if you disagree with 'Any Govt' these days they will do anything they can to shut down 'Free Speech' and the right protest no matter what part of the world you live in!

I wonder if the people will fight back by ending all calls by saying "protest". I'm sure their firewall will appreciate the extra traffic generated.

What do you mean str8thinker? What numbers?
I assume this is done via software and not humans actually listening into cellphone conversations...

Agreed ... but I found it an interesting (although not surprising if you think about it) use of voice recognition technology.
What next?

To beat the system, people will just need to be clever. Protest can also be called: Demonstration, March, Sit-in, Rally, Meeting etc... People can beat this system by just using their brains. One day the Chinese Government will be surprised to find 1 million angry Chinese citizens banging on their front door, and they won't even see it coming.

That is a pathetic lie.
The OP types that your call will be dropped if you mention "protest" in a telephone conversation in China.
That is FALSE. A lie.
I conduct many conversations over the phone in China and can say anything as can my associates without any problem.
This is the truth.
