It sounds like the telephone sales scumbags - just in case they get a no-answer they call more than one at a time, the first to answer gets picked up the rest are eventually dumped. The numbers are hidden to avoid unnecessary blocks being put on to ruin their fun. Time is money as THEY say.

What time do you get these calls? If it is around 6-8pm... we've found our culprit.

Do you talk to them? I do! I always ask why they bother calling if they dont want to speak to me...jj

I get no reponse whatsover when i ask who it is.

Thats why i cant understand if it is telephone sales people why they dont just acknowledge you

Often it is computer driven, as soon as the pickup is heard the telemarketer is connected, the rest are dumped or transferred to others in the call centre. Many companies outsource their telephone marketing to the big boys as they like to get results for their clients... they don't actually care about the customer's life in any way... well, until they hear sound of wallets being opened.

In a genuine phone call the caller answers you back within less than a second, if they don't I disconnect, no sales, no games, no intimidation.

Funny that we are going on about this

In the last month i have had to get my computer fixed twice due to a virus wanting to steal my information. (maybe co-incidental) this has never happened before.

Yes, predictive dialers (a machine). The machine listen and detect if it is a human voice or a voice recording: 1-3 seconds, then, if a human voice is detected, they will transfer the call to a live agent. If no live agent is available, they make you wait until one agent is, if you are not aware enough and wait. Some dialers will be programmed to drop off the call when no live agents are available.

Useless to talk to them, it is a machine. Your phone number that they programmed on their computer to dial you was probably taken from a list sold to them, somewhere or someone (company or organisation) to whom you genuineluy did give your phone number has sold their list to marketing/sales agencies. Did you participate in any draw where you left your number? Anything, lists or others, that could have been stolen (from a bank, a govt agency, a phone company, employees do that sometimes, stealing lists to make money, have you made business with an organisation that services you from abroad such as Phillipines or India or other countries - you got it, when there, our info is up to the best payer's grab)

our family received many phone calls with no one answering on the other end.
so what we decided was to leave the phone off the hook ,when they did not respond.
so that they where paying for the call.

Hi jjl
A couple of things come to mind.

When did they start? What might this timeline correlate with?
Is it since your post about your self recently?
Who, if anyone, might be 'stalking' you in the jealous, axe to grind way?

A long time ago I had a ladies underwear shop, you can imagine the type of calls we got with regular monotony. There were some who would say straight out some interesting stuff, some would say nothing just breath. lol

By far the best technique to deal with them was to laugh at them and say something like, no thank you I don't smoke woodbines, and hang up. The silent ones we just hung up, give them no time or energy. They are looking for a 'rise' out of us, maybe fear, some kind of reaction, if they don't get what they want they give up.

Anyway I hope this helps in some small way. It is possible to isolate the time and number from phone service provider if they become a real nuisance, but I think the police have to acquire the data.
The bottom line is to change the number which is what the police advise.

g

PS added. Woodbines were very small and cheap cigarettes, emphasis on the small.

I never pick up the phone unless caller ID indicates a person I want to talk to. Solves a lot of problems. Any business of importance can be done by mail. Can't you silence the ringer for a while? If you don't answer, it will stop.

I think everyone gets the impression that these are sales calls. I am on a no call list. With my phone every call is time stamped and recorded as coming in. And if the return number is blocked that's recorded also. No record of the call at all. Except these. I dont felel threatened. But they are not sales calls.

All joking aside, I agree with Cottage Rose that an answering machine and caller ID is the best way to go if this becomes a nuisance.

I always said no, then one day I said yes and the calls stopped.

One of my favourites is to answer with this; ''Good afternoon, big balls, small balls, all balls bearing company''
People usually hang up.
Or, if I say hello and it is a telemarketer, I straight away ask, ''Die sprechen sie Deutsch?''
That gets em too.

LOL LOL, Lord Sidious, you are part of the reason I am on Avalon!

My name in English could be confounded with "Smart". One day an english speaking telemarketer calls me asking for "Mr or Ms Smart" to which I answered "Thank you". He hanged up.

Once I got a heavy breather who would NOT go away. Finally when he called again, I turned away from the phone as if someone else was in the room and said, "No its just the retard again." Never called back.

My husband loooooves playing with the telemarketers!!!!

He can do all sorts of voices....while I sit in the background LMAO!

A woman called one time trying to sell a vacation package...my hubby put on a real backwoods southern accent (if you ever watched the movie "Slingblade" with Billy Bob Thorton, that's what he sounds like)...told her to hold on a second and yelled.."hey, you go on down to da store and buy yer daddy some beer...go on girl..do what yer daddy says!"

Then he proceeds to ask the woman what's she's wearing...she tells him (unbelievably) and he says.."mmmmm, that sounds MIGHTY nice...I likes that..." He keeps her going for a while and then I hear him say..."I'd be itchin' to go on dat dere vacation, but I aint got no legs...lost 'em in da war....
That's when we both lost it and he hung up on her.

He does this stuff all the time....it's pretty funny...at least I think so. :D

Oh Gosh...there's so many......

Hubby has a very deep baritone voice (he's does tv and radio voiceovers for a living...if you're in Calif. you might hear him...he's the voice for the San Diego Padres baseball team) Anyways, he answered the phone and it was someone asking for me.( a telephone survey)...HE says, "Yes, speaking" in his deep voice...when the woman paused for a while he said.."I have a bit of a cold"....and he proceeded to do the whole survey as me. LOL !

Call you're phone company. Say you're being harassed and want the blocked number that keeps calling you're house barred from calling you.

They'll either block the number - and sometimes if they're with the same Telco as you - they will get a call from the tellco Rep telling them directly to cease calling you as they've had a harasment complaint.

Other than that...

I am happy to say that i have no home phone. Problem solved :)

Tigahawk, where do you live? What you are saying about your telco rep calling the harrasser directly. Wow, good telco. Our telco here would never put money into this, you are on you own unless the police gets involved, which is not far from - well - having disclosure. the only thing we get here is a law forcing companies to take you out of their calling list, but the next company can keep calling unless you ask them too.

If you have a reliable high speed internet, then consider switching from a traditional land line telephone to a Voice-Over-IP (VOIP) phone.

I use Callcentric myself, but there are others also good at this.

My old regular phones still work, just now they are plugged into an adaptor that sits on my Ethernet, instead of into a jack in the wall.

Some major advantages:

Costs less - fixed cost $20 to $30 gets me a full range of features and most calls free (low cost per minute international.)
Easy to add and remove phone lines. I added a line when I had a long term guest visiting. I have added and removed fax lines a couple of times, as my needs varied.
Web control of what happens to your calls, such as which line to direct them to, when to hang up on them or give them an error message, when to send them to the answering "machine" (not really a machine in my home.)
When I notice repeated calls I don't want, I can quickly glance to see what number they are calling from and give that number "special treatment" (like never ring through to me again, thank-you.)

Fax service and voice mail (answering "machine") are all on-line web services, as part of this. So I end up sending and receiving faxes by email, not by actual machine (without the person on the other end ever noticing.)

If you're geeky, you can even program the adapter box for whatever dialing plan you like. For example, my long term guest was visiting from another part of the country, so I programmed their phone (but not mine) so that local calls (no area code entered) were assumed to be in the guests home area code, not my local North Texas area code.

I cannot tell any difference in voice quality between VOIP and regular land lines, though I'm half deaf, so I am not a good witness on that detail.

Hi jjl -- i wasn't going to post this, but just watched Bill & Kerry's recent interview together, & decided not to be so hesitant [maybe fearful is another term] , following their example of openness -- i have the same connection between seeing a ship [UFO] & a phone call -- as soon as i read your post, i thought of my own

i posted the following on Agape's thread:

last week i was feeling very very alone on this dark & demented planet -- i went to the window & silently pleaded, looking up at the sky, to know that i had not been forgotten -- then was sitting reading when my lamp blinked on & off three times -- went to the window again, & immediately saw a ship , far off, shining w/light, rise rapidly up in the sky & disappear

& this, an attempt to cheer Agape up as well as the message i felt i was receiving by seeing the ship:

you are not alone -- your people are aware of you & watching over you -- when you are finally w/them again, this lifetime here & now will just be a bad dream -- & you'll be honored , & will be bringing knowledge & wisdom home that you would not have gained w/o being in a human body at this time

two nights after the day i saw the ship, i began to feel very ill -- background: i have been diagnosed w/chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia -- severe all-over body pain & severe fatigue -- many women abductees suffer this, connected to our implants, imo -

- i have recently discovered a wonderful alternative healing modality & have been feeling very good -- but this night, 2 nights after seeing the ship, i suddenly began to feel all the pain hit me --i'll spare you the details

i was sitting there praying ['Please take it away!'] when the phone rang -- i have been having these silent calls also the last month or so-- they are not telemarketer calls , nor are they psycho breathers -- i answered it, & heard 2 bars/strains of a lovely lovely melody -- kind of New Agey, but it also sounded like water to me -- the music stopped, there was a quiet silence on the other end, i hung up -- & my body was FLOODED w/healing energy -- all the pain left, has not returned, & other sorts of healing are continuing -- i am very grateful, & have thanked them , whoever is doing this

maybe you'll feel a sync with this, jjl? anyway, that's my contribution

Thank you Wynderer , i may but hope that the depth of your prophecy , and my prophecy can cover the cost of the pain .
Me too I'm paining from this world daily . The news and the people and I live among that like a shadow .
Like light among shadows ..
I'm sure somewhere, they are friends ..might be on the other side of the planet ..but I'm ready to go to join them ...

at the end of the world we shall meet ..

may the ending pass in no time ..

What is my fate ? Child lost among stars,
crying to the night
as many have cried

Where is my home
do they search for me
I fear they do as much as I search
for them

Where is the path among humans ..

There's no One to follow

I leave no trails ..

My husband hates telephone sales people and survey takers. One night after having answered 3 unwanted calls already he answered with a simple "hello" and let the caller introduce himself. Then he responded that the caller had reached an inhouse line within the Whitehouse and that he (my husband) was Agent*****. The unwanted caller hung up without a word.

All sorts of odd calls, silent, computer voices, computer recordings and telemarketers.
The telemarketers take up to 10 seconds to respond, which is 9 seconds to long a wait for me .( leave the telemarketers number on caller ID)
The computer recordings are usually just a messageing service, they'll leave the message on your answering machine if it picks up.( leave the number of the company trying to get money from me on caller ID)
The computer voices are usually miss texts, meaning some one ment to call me but tried to send my land line a text message instead, they're kinda amusing cause A computer can not tell the difference between a word and abreviations like LOL or LMAO but it gives it's best attempt to read them off!.( leave the number of the person whom texted me on the caller ID)
The Silent calls are..odd.. sometimes I'll hear someone breathing and no number is left on the caller ID, sometimes I'll hear machine like noises and the numbers 123 456 7890 are left on the caller ID..
.
I've asked for a lift off this planet a few times, I've never seen a UFO sober, seeing one while intoxicated doesn't count, I get phone calls like the ones mentioned daily..6-10 of them a day so I wouldn't expect a sighting to be tied to my phone.
I usually let them go to the machine, but once and a while I'll answer with something silly and quirky. Thats probably when they've called expecting some one serious and endup hanging up on me becuase they didn't mean to call Pete's fish and chips! they ment to call the guy asking for lift off this prison rock.. hehe :)
