I found this clip by Richard Dawkins fascinating and beautiful. It makes you think about life.............

What a touching celebration of LIFE. It's refreshing to step back from the nuclear dilemma and refocus on the true meaning of life here on earth. Thanks for sharing :)

Thank you Henners
A perfect reminder of what an amazing gift this life. It puts things into prospective!

Gosh, he is so eloquent. The backing track didn't take me out of my mind though and really I don't buy what he is saying. The missing ingredient to his proclaimed panacea is spiritual logic, if you like.

edit) thanks for the thread title!

I agree with Ice, what a title for a thread.....:eyebrows:

I see Dawkins and heckles rise.
Not because I am an anti-atheist (oh okay, just a little one), because he lacks humility!
In this clip he attempts to emulate the great Carl Sagan, and leaves me cold.

Most poeple are never going to die, because they are never going to be born... - ya think?!?!

I love Christopher Hitchins though. Humility with stage 4 cancer...... God speed, good man!

I agree too. great title. i felt dawkins was completely missing something and after a bit into it, it was clear that it was the hard sell of you are "what are the chances of that" "your existence is important..but only in a abstract way because this little planet is so big you never could understand it" type epiphets, surely.

If anything, I See this charming video as perfect exemplification of disinformation. Perhaps I am talking from a purely nonsensical point of view or one bound in ego by saying this but:

I can't take it seriously --- if his contention is that we are the random expansion of conditions and known phenomena and after we have "woken up" we quickly "go to sleep forever"..
Judging from how overwhelmed he is about us being here in terms of the sheer multitudes of sperm that were part of the race to our making, i would suggest that he is maybe a little bit behind the curve, to put it politely, in terms of intuition about the conditions of existence. i dunno. what he said sounded really lobotomised to me. but I can imagine hawkers can sound like that.

oops, sorry.. he is obviously a very intelligent man with quick firing neurons in abundance..i meant no disrespect -- i just meant his sales pitch of spiritual euthanasia sounds tawdry to me.

How ironic...
that this is in the spirituality section and that there is church music playing in the background.
Made me laugh. :D

"Compared with most planets, this is paradise."
I wonder how many he has visited to make this profound comparison?

But all in all...a nice fluffy pink unicorn video. ;)

I didn't watch the vid, but let me say this, you are NOT going to die, your body is.
You are not your body, that is merely a vehicle to move around in.

.

but dawkins is a staunch darwinist...darwin's theory is flawed and well surpassed by now, tho the elites like it very much because it helps them perpetuate social darwinism - the survivel of the fitttest (read : the meanest)....darwinism supported many a vicious" political" and other ideology in the past century..

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:6Q3PAQ6VlJYJ:www.mountainman.com.au/gaia_lyn.html+the+new+theory+of+evolution+result+of+cooperative+and+not+competetive+processes&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk

key to positive evolution is co-operation and not competition (as favourd by darwin)...do think about it before you buy into dawkin's catchy phraseology..

besides, i read in a separate article that even dawkins could not raise objections to prof margulis theory..

i wouldn't worry about dying..

At a very primitive level the body is afraid of its own mortality. If we identify with the body, we will be afraid also.

that's because life LOVES itself...in fact and if you ask me: life and love are the same..:)

the prospect of "separation" is not teken lightly by what we understand is our "physical" sense of existence - this is what i think you refer to as: fear..

i was given to see my eternal self and i was given to see myself as i shall leave this 3D...anndddd.. my eternal self does look and feels better...:yes4: l

p.s. maybe - don't let your thoughts interfere with your life..the life in you knows how to love...why not allow it...

I find Richard Dawkin's views intelligent - yet limited.

I think he may be as zealous in his own beliefs as the religious zealots he speaks out about.

Your karma is what got you here....no free rides for being dead...it costs a lot, time energy and money. Sometimes it is called dross. When you have paid off your dross you will be free not to return here and stay in the higher worlds, where there is no tax. The only payment in the higher worlds is love, pure love. ALso the payment for getting out of the lower world is also love. Maybe LOVE YOUR TAXES . If I were to pay your taxes I would be robbing your of your lesson.
Rest assured that before you are came here the arrangement of your livelihood was made. The pains and pleasures and the general run of life were then determined. The pains and pleasures of life are the result of our own actions.
Main events of the life are the results of our past actions and this is the debt that stands against us, and like a debtor we should be happy when the debt is being paid off. The debt has to be paid. We incurred it at one time as cheerfully as some people are doing now. It seems painful now to pay, but we were not cautious when we incurred it. The only course open now is to reconcile ourselves with what is happening, for happen it must, and undergo it we must, then why not do so without opposition?

It is inevitable that the body should die. Most do not realize this.

I am grateful to be aware of this fact. Like the operator of a sound vehicle, I shall endeavor to maintain the vehicle in which I operate to ensure that it and I shall complete that which is to be completed in the lifespan of my vehicle.

And as I continue on the road, I shall enjoy the scenery. ^_^
