Native American Code of Ethics

1. Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often. The Great Spirit will listen, if you only speak.

2. Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path. Ignorance, conceit, anger, jealousy and greed stem from a lost soul. Pray that they will find guidance.

3. Search for yourself, by yourself. Do not allow others to make your path for you. It is your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.

4. Treat the guests in your home with much consideration. Serve them the best food, give them the best bed and treat them with respect and honor.

5. Do not take what is not yours whether from a person, a community, the wilderness or from a culture. It was not earned nor given. It is not yours.

6. Respect all things that are placed upon this earth - whether it be people or plant.

7. Honor other people's thoughts, wishes and words. Never interrupt another or mock or rudely mimic them. Allow Native American Code of Ethics each person the right to personal expression.

8. Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.

9. All persons make mistakes. And all mistakes can be forgiven.

10. Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind, body and spirit. Practice optimism.

11. Nature is not for us, it is a part of us. They are part of your worldly family.

12. Children are the seeds of our future. Plant love in their hearts and water them with wisdom and life's lessons. When they are grown, give them space to grow.

13. Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of your pain will return to you.

14. Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the test of ones will within this universe.

15. Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental self, Spiritual self, Emotional self, and Physical self, all need to be strong, pure and healthy. Work out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails.

16. Make conscious decisions as to who you will be and how you will react. Be responsible for your own actions.

17. Respect the privacy and personal space of others. Do not touch the personal property of others, especially sacred and religious objects. This is forbidden.

18. Be true to yourself first. You cannot nurture and help others if you cannot nurture and help yourself first.

19. Respect others religious beliefs. Do not force your belief on others.

20. Share your good fortune with others. Participate in charity.

I don't know what it is about the American Indians, but they seem to be the most beautiful tribe to ever grace our planet.
Thank you so much for your post

Just love this. I definitely feel like I was Native American in a few past lives, I really resonate with the ethics as they are certainly a model I would aspire to.

Here is the audio to Maria's prayer.

Black Elk was a famous Medicine Man of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux). He was Heyoka and a second cousin of Crazy Horse.

"The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit, and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us."

It is time to speak your truth. Create your community, Be good to each other. Do not look outside yourself for a leader. There is a river flowing now very fast, It is so great and swift.

Forget your gurus, I've said it before and few ears were listening. Stop looking for saviours and act....you have enough knowledge.

Icecold, I could not agree more. There's a term I've heard lately, truth rising, that I think about sums it up. The time for gurus is over, they will only impede your path. The great truths that have been hidden from mankind for so long are now being released, through the aether so to speak. If one desires access to their inner truth, they merely need to intend for it to be so, stay open, and create the path as they go. Not that we can't learn from other people, absolutely, but I don't think access to the rising truth can be taught.

A good example is my dad, he has been a steadfast practicing Buddhist for nearly 15 years now, but is dependent on the structure, dogma, and teachings of the 'higher ups', the robed ones. Though I think Buddhism is by far the most practical and useful of the world's religions, it is still a box, albeit a bigger box. Like the saying goes, "if you cross the Buddha on your path, kill him". Of course this is highly metaphorical, but that's it in a nutshell. Doubtful that many buddhists would appreciate this much though, even considering the Buddha never intended to create buddhists. Much as Christ never intended to create christians.

Well, to each their path.

Cheers,
Fred S.

amen :D

Thank you for the post Newlyn. I like the Lakota, especially White Buffalo Calf Woman.

Some time back, my mother said that praying was like meditation. I replied: Not really....... one is talking , the other listening. Both are required.

If I were to forced to pick a box, it would be the Buddhist-looking-kind, sans the robes. Elements of it appeal to me.

however,

I feel aswell a deep conection with native american culture and their down- to- earth (but head in the sky) spirituallity.

--

To bring back the natural harmony that humans once enjoyed.
To save the planet from present practices of destruction.
To find and re-employ real truth.
To promote true balance between both genders.
To share and be less materialistic.
To become rid of prejudice.
To learn to be related.

To be kind to animals and take no more than we need.
To play with one's children and love each equally and fairly.
To be brave and courageous, enough so,
to take a stand and make a commitment.
To understand what Generations Unborn really means.
To accept the Great Mystery
in order to end foolish argument over religion.

--

There is a difference between 'Great Spirit' and 'Great Mystery' in the native american beliefs. Great spirit is more of what we in the society would call "God", while the Mystery is the Source and energy of everything. It's a very humble and nice thing to call it Great Mystery, as to remember that we can never really grasp it's greatness, and to stop us from thinking that "our god" is the only and the right one. Everything is connected and a part of the Great Mystery.

I can definitely appreciate this being from Native American descent. Powhatan, Nanticoke and Lenape tribes. My Spirituality definitely comes from that side of the family.
