SDO will perform the EVE cruciform maneuver tomorrow, April 13, 2011. Between 14:15 and 23:05 ET (4/13/2011, 18:15 UT and 4/14/2011, 03:05 UT) the satellite will trace out a plus sign with the Sun at the center. The satellite will pitch first and then yaw by 150 arcmin in each direction.

What does that mean? What is the significance of this? Is something specific being measured?
Just curious.
Anyone?

This special spacecraft maneuver is useful for tracking any changes in the edges of the different EVE channels. The whole spacecraft rotates up and down, then rotates left and right, forming a shape like "+".

Thank you for your reply.
Much learning to be done by me. ie. that "Cruciform" means shape of a cross and nothing else.
I wonder whether they will post images of this too. I hope so.
Looks like we are in STORM mode (as seen above.)
